In this issue of Azorean Spirit, which comes at the same time as
spring and days becoming bigger and brighter, we invite you to
embark with us to two cosmopolitan and charming
destinations, in which will you’ll be able to spend some relaxing
and unforgettable vacations which no doubt you are looking
forward to and deserve.
The first is Boston, a city with a very rich history, the birthplace
of personalities such as Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy,
Malcolm X and Edgar Allan Poe, where two of the most
important universities in the world can be found: Harvard and
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Have a drink at one of the cozy pubs you can find around the
corners of the city.
If you prefer Europe, we suggest the involving city of Munich,
the capital of Bavaria and where the Oktoberfest takes place,
the most famous beer festival in the world. With an atmosphere
where you can breathe modernity, art, creativity and culture,

destinations at your disposal in all of SATA’s sales channels. We
have, therefore, established in these past months twelve new

For the third year in a row, the “Flying 2 Save” project
has gathered dozens of SATA employees in a collective
action of giving blood.
The initiative had the valuable collaboration of the
Direção dos Recursos Humanos in divulging and
giving credibility to the project and it took place in a
SATA room, dully equipped for the purpose, where a
team of professionals gathered 41 samples of blood.
The Divino Espírito Santo Hospital thanked the spirit
of sharing of this generous donation brigade.

operated by SATA Internacional between the Azores
and the Portuguese mainland, at a price of € 88,50
all taxes included.
The fare is available as from 48 and 24 hours prior

Azores, in selected flights and with a limit of
available seats.
This fare, which you can purchase in all of SATA’s sale

World Series está de volta aos
Açores em junho próximo! Isto
depois de uma estreia em 2012 que
deixou uma forte marca. Esta
impressão positiva pesou
certamente na balança no
momento de decidir o ano de 2013, permitindo que
a ação regresse ao Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo situado ao largo da ilha de São Miguel - no último
fim-de-semana de junho (dias 28 e 29). Portugal
continua assim a ter a terceira etapa do circuito
mundial, numa época recheada de novidades.
O circuito contará com oito etapas na Europa,
América e Ásia. França tem as honras da abertura
(25 de maio), seguindo-se a Dinamarca (22 de
junho), Portugal (29 de junho), Itália (14 de julho),
Estados Unidos da América (24 de agosto), Reino
Unido (14 de setembro), Brasil (28 de setembro) e
Tailândia (26 de outubro).
RED BULL CLIFF DIVING RETURNS
TO THE AZORES IN JUNE It’s official, the
Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series will be back
in the Azores next June! This happens after the
first edition in 2012 which was very impressive.
This positive impression was for sure very
irrelevant when making the decision for 2013,
thus making it possible for the action to return
to the Vila Franca do Campo islet – situated off
the coast of São Miguel – in the last weekend in
June (28th and 29th). Portugal will go on being
the third leg of the world circuit at a newsy time.
The circuit will have four legs in Europe,
America and Asia. France will have the honor
of the opening (May 25th), followed by
Denmark (June 22nd), Portugal (June 29th),
Italy (July 14th), United States of America
(August 24th), United Kingdom (September
14th), Brazil (September 28th) and Thailand
(October 26th)

Portuguese Festival’s eighth
edition will take place this year in
the months of May and June.
This initiative’s aim is to
disseminate the expressive
Portuguese heritage in New
England, gathering several
events and activities which are
representative of the Portuguese
language and culture in the
areas of literature, music, arts,
history and heritage,
entrepreneurship, science and
technology. This festival has as
its main aim to celebrate
Portuguese culture sharing it wit
the public of the greater Boston
area, including the important
academic community and
American students, Portuguese
descendants or foreigners,
attending schools and
universities in this area.
The festival is organized by the
Portuguese-American community
with the support of the Consulate
General of Portugal in Boston

The FIA Rally Europe Competition has gained a new

Os consumidores residentes no continente e na
Madeira puderam participar no concurso, enviando
para a PROFRUTOS um cupão disponível na
compra de um Ananás dos Açores, juntamente
como o talão de compra e o selo de certificação
DOP. Foram recebidas 814 participações, de entre as
quais serão sorteados os dois vencedores, no dia 25
de Fevereiro, durante o SISAB.

story going back to the 17th century, but also the

Consumers living in the Continent and in Madeira
could participate in the competition by sending

purchasing an Azores Pineapple, together with the proof
of purchase and the DOP certification stamp. There
were 814 participations, among which two winners will
be chosen on February 25th during SISAB.

International Film Festival
em Ponta Delgada
Promovido pela AIPA, Associação dos Imigrantes
nos Açores, e com o apoio do Governo Regional
dos Açores, realiza-se em Ponta Delgada
a II edição do Panazorean International Film Festival,
que decorrerá de 11 a 20 de abril de 2013.

Tal como na 1ª edição haverá lugar para a exibição de
filmes de realizadores de culto, consagrados ou em
ascensão, dando ainda o festival uma particular atenção

2ND EDITION OF THE PANAZOREAN FILM FESTIVAL IN
PONTA DELGADA Promoted by AIPA
(Association for Azorean Immigrants and
sponsored by the Regional Government of the
Azores, the 2nd edition of the Panazorean
Film Festival of the Azores will take place in
Ponta Delgada from the 11th to the 20th of
April 2013. After the success of the first edition and
after having shown a sample of the festival in Buenos Aires,
the 2nd edition of the Panazorean will have new sections,
new awards and the same passion in reflecting on migrations, dialog and cultural diversity.
Fiction, documentaries and animation movies for the
general public and all ages is what this unique festival
in the country is divulging.
As what happened in the 1st edition there will be films
by cult directors, renowned ones or still getting to be
known; the festival also gives special attention to new
talents at a regional level.

do realizador Rúben Alves e, ainda, de Pedro Pauleta.
Também fora de competição será apresentada uma
seleção dos prémios LUX de 2012, do Parlamento
Europeu, entre eles o vencedor, “Yo Sono Li and The
poet”, de Andrea Segre, e o outro finalista, “Tabu”, do
realizador português Miguel Gomes, longa metragem que
aparece invariavelmente no top ten das principais listas
mundiais para melhores filmes de 2012. A exibição dos
filmes desta secção surge com o apoio da deputada ao
Parlamento Europeu, Maria do Céu Patrão Neves.
Quanto aos filmes da secção competitiva serão anunciados com o restante programa de atividades, na terceira semana de março.
O festival, que é o único a nível nacional e um dos
poucos a nível mundial sobre a temática, terá este ano
mais um local de exibição: para além do Teatro
Micaelense e da Galeria Arco 8, será no Cineclube de
Ponta Delgada, no Cine Solmar. Do programa também farão parte exposições, debates, masterclasses e
concertos.

Parliament awards will also be presented extra competition, among which the winner “Yo sono Li and The Poet”

is always appears on the top ten world lists for best 2012
films. The films will be shown has the support of the
European Parliament member Maria do Céu Patrão Neves.
The films entering the competition will be announced together with the remaining activities on the 3rd week in March.
The festival is the only one, at a national level and a bit
at world level on the theme migrations, and will have this
year one more theater where it will take place beside the
Teatro Micaelense and the Galeria Arco 8, it will be at
Ponta Delgada Cineclube, at Cine Solmar. The program
will also have reruns, debates, master classes and concerts.

o princípio, era o mar.
Nuno Lopes, na infância, via o seu futuro
submergido. Literalmente. Queria ser documentarista subaquático, à semelhança do
ídolo Jacques Cousteau. Algo incomum para quem
crescia em Lisboa. “É um fascínio que tenho pelas
grandes criaturas marítimas, tubarões, baleias…”. O
que ainda permanece. Quando em férias, pratica snorkelling. ”Perco completamente a noção do tempo e
fico horas dentro de água”. E, para o verão, já tem
marcado o cumprimento de uma vontade antiga:
mergulhar nas águas dos Açores.
Depois, veio a indefinição. Tentou a pintura, a música. “Senti que me tinha de expressar artisticamente”.
Até que um curso de representação com o mestre
António Feio o fez descobrir o caminho. “Ao representar expressava tanto ideias como emoções.” E com a
VITAL ART Actor Nuno Lopes is always
looking for new creative boundaries. He has
got theater, movies and TV on his resumé. He
performs drama and comedy. He is one of
the most versatile Portuguese actors. In the
beginning there was the sea. During his childhood, Nuno
Lopes imagined his future underwater. Literally. He wanted to be an underwater documentary filmmaker, just like
his idol Jacques Cousteau. Something quite uncommon for
someone raised in Lisbon. “It’s a fascination I have for big
sea creature, sharks, whales…”. And it’s still much so.
During his vacations he practices snorkeling. “I completely lose track of time and I remain hours on end in the
water”. And for this summer he already has decided to fulfill an old wish: to dive in the waters of the Azores.
Then came the uncertainty. He tried painting, music. “ I
felt I had to express myself artistically”, until an acting
course with António Feio showed him the way. “ When
acting I could express my ideas as well as my emotions.”
This is an advantage for the shy young man. “ When you

A partir daí veio a representação dos grandes dramaturgos, sob a tutela de Luís Miguel Cintra. “Além de
representar, aprendi uma ética de trabalho”.
Tornou-se conhecido na comédia televisiva, com Maria
Rueff e Herman José. Progrediu para o cinema, quis
versatilidade. Sempre com uma qualquer vontade de
intervenção (ou evolução) nas escolhas que fez. “Tenho
de me desafiar. Não me interessa fazer coisas que já
sei fazer ou que não tenham nenhuma ideia por detrás.
Representar deve ser um ato vital”. Daí a opção, no
grande ecrã, por papéis fortes. “Estar em cena é um
ato político. Estás a afirmar qualquer coisa”.
Nuno integra o próximo filme de Fanny Ardant, com
Gerard Depardieu e Ásia Argento. Internacionalização
nos horizontes? Talvez, mas o seu palco preferencial
é a língua portuguesa. “Prefiro mil vezes representar
na minha língua materna”. Entretanto, vai regressar
ao teatro, com o seu grupo, os Arena Ensemble, em
abril. E continuar a procurar novos registos criativos.

in view? Maybe, but he prefers to act in Portuguese. “ I
much prefer to act in my mother tongue”. Meanwhile, he’ll
be back on stage with his group, the Arena Ensemble, in
April. And he’ll go on looking for other creative registers.

no cenário, e uma sugestão de variedade prazenteira

als an American city, but with an unusual
inclination for the arts, history, science and
gastronomy, this in itself defines a city’s
lifestyle. On his first day on a short visit to Boston, Mark
Twain was amazed with every detail of the streets of this
‘new Athens’. Impossible to focus your attention, wrote
one of the most famous American writers, because a new
discovery comes up at every moment. “Every step reveals
some portion of a building which you could not see before, some change in our vista, and some suggestion of pleasant variety yet to come, which not only keeps your interest alive but heightens it and persuades you to go on.”

At first sight, the scenery is that of a big American city,
with its skyline sketched with glazed buildings. Then,

used for ice skating.

We’ll end quoting mark Twain once again on his impressions on his short visit which delighted him: “I could not
see much of Boston (…), but what I did see of it has been
very pleasant to remember”.

visita aos parques e jardins de Munique, o centro da Marienplatz será o
mais popular. Ao som das
doze badaladas do meio-dia, centenas de pessoas erguem os olhos para
a torre gótica da catedral
de Munique para assistirem ao Glockenspiel, um conjunto rotativo e musicado de figuras animadas que contam lendas populares
do século XVI.
WINTER GARDENS The numerous
parks and gardens reflect the quality of life
in Munich. Vast and noble they allow you
to wander in the nature, culture and history of the city. Among the many starting points for
a visit to Munich’s parks and gardens, the Marienplatz
center is the most popular. At the strike of noon, hundreds
of people raise their eyes toward Munich’s Gothic tower
to watch the Glockenspiel, a rotating carillon of animated figures which recount popular 16th-century tales.
Once the show over, all you need is a short walk along

Terminado o espetáculo, basta um curto passeio ao
longo da Theatinerstrasse para alcançar a entrada em arco
do nobre Hofgarten – jardim de estilo renascentista,
contíguo à sumptuosa residência-museu dos antigos
príncipes regentes bávaros, com um templo central dedicado à deusa romana Diana. E que é citado num dos
mais conhecidos poemas de T.S. Eliot: “O verão surpreendeu-nos, caindo sobre o Starnbergersee/Com aguaceiros; esperamos sob a colunata/ Depois seguimos, à luz
do Sol, para o Hofgarten.”
Num dos extremos do jardim, no final de uma passagem subterrânea, vislumbra-se o amplo cenário do
Englischer garten. Maior parque de Munique, com 3,7
km2, é equiparado pelos locais ao Central Park, de Nova
Iorque. E, de facto, é o centro de lazer ao ar livre da capital da Baviera. Pelos seus caminhos sinuosos entre canais
e lagos passeia-se, corre-se, pedala-se, convive-se ou,
simplesmente, desfruta-se da envolvente. Com o bom
tempo, um popular templo chinês transforma-se em
biergarten, esplanada onde se saboreia a tradicional
weissbier (cerveja de trigo). A casa de chá japonesa e o
templo grego adicionam ao cenário um aspeto multicivilizacional.

On one of the edges of the garden, at the end of an
underground passage, you can have a glimpse of the
vast scenery of the Englisher garten, Munich’s largest
park, with 3,7 square meters, compared by its inhabitants to New York’s Central park. And, in fact, it’s the
outdoor leisure spot of Bavaria’s capital. Through its
winding paths among canals and lakes, you can go for
a walk, eat, cycle, socialize, or simply enjoy the surroundings. In good weather, a popular Chinese temple becomes a biergarten, an esplanade where you can drink the
traditional weissbier (rye beer). The Japanese tearoom
and the Greek temple add a multi-civilization aspect to
the scenery.
A bit distant from the center, there are two places you must
visit: the botanical garden Botanischer Garten and the
Nymphenburg Palace. The botanical garden, in spring, is

prato de autor a que chamou Rebentação. Com pinças,
posiciona os coloridos frutos do mar, rodeados por
espuma de água salgada e areia de algas, num pequeno cenário azulado: uma peça de cerâmica portuguesa com a forma de uma concha.
Gastronomia irreverente e inovadora, mas com uma
base distintivamente portuguesa. “Não posso chegar

José Avillez combines in his restaurant the
irreverence of his gastronomic creations
with the respect for the basic Portuguese
cuisine. On the central counter of his kitchen in restaurant Belcanto, in Chiado, Lisbon, chef José Avillez, with
the swiftness and precision of a painter, composes the
elements of his signature dish that he named Rebentação.
(Surf). With tongs, he puts the seafood into place, surrounded by foamy seawater and sand made with algae in a
small bluish scenario: an item of Portuguese ceramic shaped as a shell.
An irreverent and innovative cuisine, but with a definitively Portuguese basis. “I can’t get hold of Fernando Pessoa’s
poems and say I’m going to change a word” , he explains.
Speaking of Fernando Pessoa, the restaurant in a Classical
style situated in the square of the São Carlos theater, which
opened in 1958 and under Avillez’s supervision since 2012,

Teatro São Carlos, inaugurado em 1958 e sob a batuta de Avillez desde 2012, localiza-se muito próximo
da casa onde o grande poeta nasceu.
Tal como nos poemas pessoanos, Avillez inspira-se na
lusitanidade. Um reflexo dos seus antecedentes e
como são transpostos na gastronomia. “Tem muito
a ver com ter nascido em Cascais e ter vivido sempre em contacto com o mar.” Outras características
que denota nas suas confeções: o inconformismo,
como se verifica no prato A Horta da Galinha dos
Ovos de Ouro, com folha dourada comestível; e a
inovação – “o que faço agora é diferente do que vou
fazer daqui a dois anos”.
Foi uma conversa com Maria de Lurdes Modesto, a
matriarca da cozinha portuguesa, que o fez perceber
que a opção de ser chef era viável. “Lembro-me dos
olhos dela brilharem”. A formação da identidade culinária também passou pelas cozinhas de Alain Ducasse,
Eric Frechon e do guru da gastronomia molecular
Ferran Adrià. “Foi transformador. Mudou a minha
maneira de ver a cozinha”.

As in Pessoa’s poems, Avillez gets his inspiration from
Portuguese things. A reflection of his background and how
it is transposed into his cuisine. “It has a lot to do with having
been born in Cascais and always having lived in contact
with the sea.” Other characteristics of his dishes are: inconformity, as we can see in his dish A Horta da Galinha dos
Ovos de Ouro (The Orchard of the Hen that laid Gold Eggs),
with edible gold leaf: and innovation – “what I do now is
different from what I’ll do in two years’ time”.
It was after a conversation with Maria de Lurdes Modesto,

Autónoma dos Açores e para o desenvolvimento das

O sucesso do nosso povo é de tal forma notório que o
Governo dos Açores, através da Direção Regional das
Manuel Lima nasceu na cidade de Ponta
Delgada, ilha de São Miguel. Com formação
em Arquitetura de Design, o seu trabalho já

of 2009". Manuel Lima is also a frequent speaker in conferences and

Mandarin and French.
Joaquim Rafael Rost Ávila Martins nasceu na cidade
do Porto. O seu pai é natural da ilha do Pico. É professor no
Departamento de Engenharia Aeroespacial da Universidade de
Michigan, EUA, e responsável pelo Laboratório MDO
(Multidisciplinary Design Optimization), cujas investigações
incidem sobre o desenvolvimento e aplicação de metodologias
MDO para projetos de aeronaves. Entre os prémios recebidos,
destaca-se o Best Paper Award, atribuído na Multidisciplinary
Analysis and Optimization Conference, do
American Institute of Aeronautics and

Joaquim Rafael Rost Ávila Martins was
born in Porto. His father was born on Pico Island. He
is an Associate Professor at the Department of
Aerospace Engineering of the University of
Michigan, USA, where he heads the
Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Laboratory.
His research involves the development and application
of MDO methodologies to the design of aircraft configurations. From the
prizes he has been awarded, we highlight the Best Paper Award, at the
Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization Conference of the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

competitions. Representing Canada, she took part in the Beijing 2008
Olympic Games and in the London 2012 Olympic Games, achieving the
bronze medal in the category of synchronized platform diving. Her
young career is already shining with bronze, silver and gold medals from
several world competitions.
Marcelo dos Santos Lages nasceu no Brasil.
Os bisavós, lado materno, eram oriundos da
ilha de São Jorge. Tenente do Exército, trocou
a carreira militar para se dedicar
exclusivamente à dança. Atualmente,
incorpora o corpo de bailarinos do Teatro
Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. Do seu
reportório fazem parte os grandes bailados
clássicos e as tournées por países como
Alemanha, Áustria, Suíça e Itália. Entre os prémios recebidos,
distinguem-se o Festival de Dança de Joinville, o Porto Alegre
em Dança, o Festival Tapias RJ, o Festival de Dança de
Montevideo, e o Dance Festival Munchen.
Marcelo dos Santos Lages was born in Brazil. His greatgrandparents were from São Jorge Island. He was a lieutenant, but
decided to abandon military career to become a dancer. Currently, he is a
dancer at Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. His repertoire includes all
the great ballet classics, as well as tours to several European countries,
namely Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Regarding prizes,
those awarded at the following festivals stand out: Dance Festival of
Joinville, Porto Alegre em Dança, Tapias RJ Festival, Dance Festival of
Montevideo, and Dance Festival München.

he has served as the Official White House Photographer for President

Joe Melo was born on São Miguel Island. This
renowned Portuguese-Canadian businessman of the
construction and quarry industry is known as one of the
best as regards stone artwork. He is the author of one of the
most symbolic pieces of Ontario – “Inukshuk” – a
monument composed of overlapped stones, used by the Inuit
people as navigation or directional aid, that is now in the
Guinness Book of Records. In addition to this activity, Joe
Melo writes for several trade magazines and provides training to young
generations.

Victor Castro nasceu e estudou na ilha
Terceira. Reside em São Luís do Maranhão,
Brasil. É guitarrista, arranjador, compositor e um
dos membros do grupo “Victor Castro Trio”. Ao
longo da sua carreira tem realizado concertos a
solo em Portugal, Alemanha, Estados Unidos da
América, Argentina e em vários estados do
Brasil. Foi premiado duas vezes no Brasil como
2º melhor violonista no Festival Internacional de Interpretação
Violonística e, em 2010, foi distinguido, em Lisboa, pela
Secretaria de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas com o
“Prémio Talento 2009”.

It opened in 1855, when entrepreneur Harvey
D. Parker decided that Boston deserved a
first-class hotel. Situated on the corner of
Tremont and School streets, at the epicenter
of the political and literary activity of the city,
it started almost immediately to draw people’s attention for the quality of its space and
service. Throughout the decades it had
famous guests as writer Charles Dickens,
actress Sarah Bernhardt and late USA president John F. Kennedy. The hotel, which is the
longest continuously operating hotel in
America, has evolved throughout the times.
The last renovation, in 2008, refurbished the
hotel with modern comfort. But the initial
charm remains in the oak-paneled surfaces,
in the crystal candelabra and in the golden
ornaments, which recreate in the living rooms
the atmosphere of the old private clubs in
British style. It has 530 rooms and 21luxury
suites and it continues receiving guests with
the distinction it has always had.

estado nos Açores?
Foi uma viagem fantástica.
Uma das minhas coisas preferidas é viajar. Descobrimos
novos sabores, novas técnicas
e novas pessoas. A Europa tem
algum charme. Aquele ritmo
de colocar a refeição como uma prioridade encontrase em toda a parte na Europa, Açores incluído. Ainda
por cima encontram-se, e isto é a cereja no topo do
bolo, a apenas quatro horas de voo de Boston.
O que o surpreendeu mais?
A maneira como todas aquelas ilhas estavam alinhadas e a total beleza natural era imponente e fantástica. É como se o continente se tivesse fragmentado e
dividido em ilhas. Fiquei surpreendido com a quantidade de vacas. Ou seja, carne deliciosa e lacticínios. Os
queijos eram maravilhosos. Depois fui ao Pico. Marisco
e vinhos fantásticos. O verdelho é estupendo.

TV host, a tireless traveler, an interpreter of
the culinary fusion between the east and the
west, visited the Azores because of shooting
sessions and he tells us about the experience.
How was the experience of being in the Azores?
It was an amazing trip. One of my favourite things is travelling. You get to discover new flavours, new techniques
and new people. There is some charm about Europe. That
pace, putting the meal as a priority, translates to everywhere in Europe, including the Azores. They just happen
to be, and this is like the cream on the sundae, some four
hours direct flight from Boston.
What surprised you the most?
The way that all those islands were lined up and the
shear natural beauty was dramatic and outstanding. It’s
like the continent got broken up into islands. I was surprised about the amount of cows. That meant delicious
beef and dairy. The cheeses were stupendous. Then I go
to Pico. So, fantastic seafood, and fantastic wine. The verdelho is stupendous.

Usado em culinária ou em cima de queijo, é fantástico. A coisa mais divertida que experimentei foi nas
Furnas. Cozinhar na terra. Foi o espaço de cozinha
mais divertido que jamais vi.
É gratificante fazer programas de televisão pelo
mundo fora?
É essa a alegria de abrirmos os olhos e absorvermos
como uma esponja. O estilo de cada chef depende do
sítio onde nascemos; onde vivemos; para onde viajamos. Tem tudo com a ver com a maneira de trazer
essas técnicas e sabores e chamar-lhes seus. O mesmo
sucedeu nos Açores.

You reinterpreted some of the typical Azorean dishes.
Was it interesting?
My favourite discovery was pimenta da terra. It had that
good spice to it, but it tasted like seawater salt. Used for cooking or on top of cheese, it was stupendous. The coolest thing
I saw was Furnas. Cooking in the earth. It was one of the
coolest cooking arenas I’ve ever seen.
How fulfilling is it to do TV shows all around the
world?
That’s the joy of opening your eyes and absorbing like a sponge. Every chef’s style is based on where you were born; where
you live; and where you travel. It’s all about bringing those
techniques and flavours and calling it your own. The same
happened in the Azores.

feito oficialmente. Foi talvez a coisa mais importante que fiz enquanto chef.

You became a sort of an ambassador. Is it a way to
bring the east and the west together?
Absolutely. I’ve cooked for the president of China. He was
visiting madam secretary Clinton and vice president Biden.
Because of that lunch, they started this chef corps. The
Azores was the first official time it was done. It was probably the most honourable thing I’ve done as a chef.

Considera-se agora um chef global?
Todos os chefs inspiram-se no mundo. Encontramos
qualquer ingrediente que queiramos. Tenho sorte em
ter visitado muitas partes do globo. Tudo isto me
influenciou, mas mantive-me sempre focado. Quando
dizemos que fazemos cozinha ocidental/oriental, significa que fazemos toda e qualquer cozinha do
mundo.
Disse que o que faz tem tudo a ver com as pessoas. O que quis dizer?
Quando as pessoas nos recebem de braços abertos,
mostrando-nos os mercados, orgulhosos dos seus países e da sua cozinha, levando-nos a jogar golfe… O
facto dos açorianos nos terem recebido tão bem… Isso
vale a viagem.

Corps, a group of chefs who takes part in gastronomic and diplomatic initiatives created
by the American department of State.
Do you consider yourself as a global chef now?
All chefs grab from the world. We can get every ingredient
now. I’m fortunate that I did get to see a lot of the world.
I’m influenced by all of that, but focused. When you say
you do east west cuisine, you do every cuisine in the world.
You said that what you do is all about the people.
What did you mean?
When people welcomes you with their arms open, showing
us the markets, proud of their country and their food, taking
me golfing… The fact the Azoreans so welcomed us… That
makes the trip.

centenários, um palácio que poderia figurar como cenário de qualquer
conto que começasse com “era uma vez...”. E que ainda
mantém uma aura majestática, apesar dos protagonistas aristocráticos da história terem partido há muito.
Ficou concluído em 1907 – o rei D. Carlos, amante de
caça e botânica, só lhe sobreviveu um ano. E a monarquia outros dois. Contudo, o palácio é uma homenagem aos feitos épicos da real história portuguesa: o
estilo neo-manuelino, evocativo do mosteiro dos
Jerónimos, com a fachada trabalhada em pedra de
Ançã; o vitral e frescos evocativos dos Descobrimentos,

the Buçaco Wood might be the scenery for
any fairy tale.
At the decline of the Portuguese monarch y, at the top
of a hill involved in mystical mist and century-old
cedars, a palace was built which might be the scenery
of any tale starting by “once upon a time…” It still
maintains its majestic aura, despite the aristocratic
protagonists of this story having left a long time ago.
Its construction was finished in 1907 – King Carlos, who
loved hunting and botanic, only survived one year after
its conclusion, and the monarchy survived two.
Nevertheless, the palace is a homage to the epic feats of
the Portuguese royal history: the Neo–Manueline style, inspired in the Jerónimos Monastery, with its façade made
of Ançã stone; the glass-stained window representing the
Discoveries in the imposing staircase; the ballroom decorated with paintings and excerpts from the Lusiads.

STONES WHICH ARE JEWELS
In his hands, volcanic rock becomes a
jewel, an art which has led him to
national recognition. His name is Paulo
do Vale and ever since he was a child
he has been in contact with Azorean
black basalt. Very early on he understood
basalt’s great potential, a black rocky
material which is a volcanic substrate of
his homeland. The stone the artist uses,
and which is already a trademark of his
work, is gathered at a “secret” place and
laboriously cut and molded following his

O uso das pedras preciosas neste contexto gramático é recorrente no seu
trabalho, sendo muito frequente o
recurso a diamantes, outro material
que chega à superfície do planeta por
meio vulcânico. Esmeraldas, rubis, turmalinas, quartzo e pérolas de cultura
são igualmente escolhas preferenciais
para integrar as jóias e objetos que têm
o “ouro negro” como protagonista.
A veia criativa e a excelência da execução artesanal de Paulo do Vale, associadas à expressão identitária das suas
peças, têm sido premiadas e reconhecidas nas mais diversas instâncias,
designadamente em concursos nacionais e internacionais. Não há muito
tempo, arrecadou o primeiro prémio
no concurso de design de joalharia que
associou a Presidência da República à
prestigiada revista VIP-Jóias.
Não obstante existir um denominador
comum – o basalto – em grande parte
do seu trabalho, desde há anos a esta
parte, a contínua conquista de prémios
e encomendas (como a que constituiu
presente de Estado à rainha da Jordânia, em 2008), demonstra que o artista insiste em inovar nas suas propostas criativas de matriz açoriana.

UNIQUE PIECES are on
aesthetic and creative style. The dignity
Paulo Vale confers to his jewels make
them as worthy as noble metals such as
gold and silver, and make them a symbol of the Azores.
The use of precious tones in this context
is recurrent in his work, with him frequently using diamonds, yet another
material which arrives to the surface of
the planet by volcanic means. Emeralds,
rubies, tourmalines, quartz and cultured
pearls are also among his choices to be
part of the jewels and objects which have
the “black gold” as their protagonist.
Paulo Vale’s creative vein and the excellence of his work, associated to the identity expressiveness of his items, have
been awarded and recognized in the most
varied circumstances, namely in national and international competitions. Not
log ago he was awarded the first prize in
a jewelry design competition which associated the Presidency of the Republic to
the prestigious VIP-Jóias magazine.

mais de uma década.
Outra faceta que distingue Paulo do
Vale é a sua particular devoção ao
Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, imagem sagrada de fortíssimo valor espiritual junto dos açorianos, tanto localmente como na diáspora. O artista
tem sido, a título gracioso, responsável pela manutenção das ricas alfaias
deste centenário e valioso tesouro que
ainda está ao serviço do culto. Foi
neste contexto que, juntamente com
a mãe, elaborou a Capa do Ano Jubilar
em que se encontram mais de 150
aplicações de jóias, das mais valiosas
às mais modestas, espelho da transversalidade sócio-económica do povo,
tendo igualmente concebido e executado um cálice em ouro maciço procedente de mais de 400 alianças oferecidas ao Senhor Santo Cristo.
É ainda de “ouro negro” açoriano o
rosário que foi oferecido a Sua Santidade o Papa Bento XVI, por ocasião
da sua visita a Portugal, em 2010, deste
modo dotando o basalto de um valor
simbólico nunca antes alcançado pela
pedra vulcânica dos Açores.

Beside his inventive side, and being an
experienced bench jeweler, Paulo Vale is
an official appraiser for Casa da Moeda
(the Portuguese Mint), a position he has
held for over a decade. Another characteristic of Paulo Vale is his particular
devotion for Senhor Santo Cristo dos
Milagres, a sacred image with a very
strong spiritual meaning for the
Azoreans., locally as well as in the diaspora. The artist has been responsible, free
of charge, for the maintenance of this rich
century-old religious garments and the
valuable treasure which is still used in
this cult. It was in this context that,
together with his mother he made the
Capa do Ano Jubilar in which over 150
jewels can be found, from the most valuable to the more modest ones, a reflection
of the people’s socio-economic transversality. He also created and executed a chalice in solid gold with the gold of over 400
wedding rings which had been offered to
the Image.
The rosary offered to Pope Benedict XVI
when he visited Portugal in 2010, is also
made of Azorean “black gold”. Thus basalt
took on a symbolic value never before
reached by this Azorean volcanic stone

músculo-esqueléticas e cãibras musculares, e
irão ajudá-lo a relaxar o corpo e a mente,

Os dez exercícios recomendados podem ser
executados em sequência ou alternadamente:
SATA recommends passengers, especially on
medium-haul flights and long-haul flights, to
exercise their legs, torso and arms.
The exercises, which are recommended, are
simple and practical, but they might help you
to avoid muscular-and skeletal pains and also
muscular cramps. Also, the exercises will help
you relax your body and mind, making your
trip even more enjoyable, comfortable and
relaxed, especially when you have been sitting
in a confined space for a long time. The ten
exercises we recommend may be done in
sequence or alternatively, according to the skill
and physical capacity of each passenger.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT’S VISIT
TO THE AZORES IN 1909 Theodore
heodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), vigésimo sexto presidente dos Estados
Unidos da América, no termo do seu
segundo mandato na Casa Branca, em
fevereiro de 1909, teve a oportunidade de concretizar um sonho que há
muito acalentava: realizar um safari
em África. Esta expedição, bastante
publicitada pelos jornais da época,
envolvia também naturalistas do Smithsonian Museum
e culminaria depois com uma visita às principais capitais europeias – Berlim, Paris e Londres – onde o ex-presidente americano foi recebido com honras de Estado.
A sua passagem pelas ilhas dos Açores deu-se no início
da travessia transatlântica entre Nova Iorque e Nápoles,
quando o paquete alemão da Hamburg-American Line
escalou os portos da Horta (29 de Março) e Ponta Delgada
(30 de Março) para largar a mala do correio, tendo
Theodore Roosevelt aproveitado a ocasião para desembarcar por algumas horas na qualidade de simples turista. O facto de Portugal ser ainda uma monarquia, que
não mantinha com o regime republicano americano
grandes afinidades políticas, bem como a circunstância
da viagem não ter qualquer enquadramento oficial,
explica a ausência de autoridades distritais e municipais
na receção a Roosevelt, mas a sua presença em terras aço-

Roosevelt (1858-1919), the twenty sixth President of the
United States of America, at the end of his second term
at the White House, in February 1909, had the opportunity to fulfill a dream he had had for a long time: to go
on a safari to Africa. This expedition, widely publicized
in newspapers of the time, also involved naturalists of the
Smithsonian Museum and would end with a visit to the
main European capital cities – Berlin, Paris and London
–where the ex-American President was received with
honors of a Head of State.
His visit to the Azorean Islands happened at the beginning
of the transatlantic voyage between new York and Naples,
when the German steamship belonging to the HamburgAmerican Line anchored at the Horta (March 29th) and
Ponta Delgada (March 30th) docks to deliver the mail,
Theodore Roosevelt took the opportunity to go ashore for a
few hours as a simple tourist. The fact that Portugal was
still a monarchy and, therefore, did not maintain with the
American Republican regime great political affinities, as well
as the circumstance that the voyage did not have an official nature, explains the absence of the district and municipal authorities at Roosevelt’s reception, but his presence
in the Azores did not go by unnoticed to the local press,

na viragem para o século XX, onde o jornal O Telegrapho
noticiou com grande destaque a breve visita nos seguintes termos: “O ex-presidente da América do Norte (...)
manifestou o desejo de desembarcar no Fayal por ser,
disse ele, a ilha dos Açores que mais se prende à história dos Estados Unidos”. Num postal ilustrado com uma
vista da estrada para a Praia do Norte, endereçado à
filha Ethel, Roosevelt descreve em poucas linhas a beleza da paisagem retratada na fotografia – “Essas são
vedações de hortênsias em flor alinhadas ao longo da
berma da estrada por vários quilómetros. Quem me
dera que tu e a tua mãe aqui estivessem!”.
Durante a escala em Ponta Delgada, Theodore Roosevelt
deu uma rápida volta de carro na companhia do cônsul norte-americano, subindo ao Alto da Mãe de Deus
para apreciar uma panorâmica do porto e da cidade. Em
contraste com a frieza e distanciamento das autoridades, os estudantes do Liceu de Ponta Delgada, cujas
inclinações políticas eram manifestamente republica-

mainly in Faial, the most pro-American Azorean island at
the turn of the 19th century, where the newspaper O
Telegrapho, reported with great emphasis the short visit as
follows: “The ex-president of the United States of America
(…) showed interest in disembarking in Fayal because,
according to him, it’s the Azorean island which is the most
connected to the history of the United States”. In an illustrated postcard he sent his daughter Ethel, Roosevelt describes in a few lines the beauty of the landscape shown on
the illustration – “Those are hydrangea hedges lined along
the side of the road for several kilometers. How I wish you
and your mother were here!”
During his stop in Ponta Delgada; Theodore Roosevelt briefly
went for a car drive around the island with the American consul, going up to the Alto da Mãe de Deus to appreciate the
view of the harbor and the city. In contrast with the coldness
and detachment of the authorities, students from the Ponta
Delgada high school, whose political inclinations were openly

sem o povo a saudá-lo.
nas, fizeram questão de saudar a visita do ex-presidente acompanhando-o até ao cais da Alfândega no meio
de entusiásticos vivas à República dos Estados Unidos
da América, “uma das mais democráticas e a mais rica
do mundo”, como escrevia o jornal dos estudantes do
Liceu, A Mocidade, que na sua edição de abril de 1909
denunciava a indiferença com que tinha sido recebido
tão ilustre visitante – “Mr. Roosevelt, um dos maiores
estadistas do mundo (...) esteve entre nós na última
terça-feira, 30 de Março. Desembarcou como o mais
insignificante emigrado, sem uma autoridade o receber, sem o povo o saudar (...) A Academia desta cidade,
ainda que tardia e sem grande brilho, tentou remediar
a falta que não era sua, mas de alguém que não a deveria ter.”.
Numa espécie de ato de contrição coletivo, pouco depois
da implantação da República em Portugal (5 de Outubro
de 1910), a primeira vereação republicana da Câmara
de Ponta Delgada, por proposta de um dos seus membros, Evaristo Ferreira Travassos, tomava a decisão de atribuir “o nome de Passeio Público Theodore Roosevelt ao
Passeio Público da Mãe de Deus, como homenagem
prestada pela cidade de Ponta Delgada àquele grande
cidadão americano pela sua visita em Março de 1909”.
Esta marca toponímica, hoje caída no esquecimento
oficial, é a única que celebra em terras açorianas a figura de um presidente dos Estados Unidos da América, por
sinal um dos poucos – conjuntamente com Washington,
Jefferson e Lincoln – cuja efígie está gravada em pedra
nas paredes de granito de Mount Rushmore, um dos
mais estimados monumentos nacionais da memória
coletiva norte-americana.

Republican, insisted on greeting the ex-President’s visit accompanying him to the Customs dock amidst enthusiastic cries
of ‘Long live the Republic of the United States, one of the most
democratic and richest in the world’, as wrote the students’
newspaper, A Mocidade, which in its April 1909 issue mentioned the indifference with which such a notable guest had
been received. – “Mr. Roosevelt, one of the greatest heads of
state in the world (...) was among us last Tuesday, March 30th.
He disembarked as the most insignificant emigrant, no one
representing the authority was there to welcome him, the people did not come to greet him (…) of This city ‘s academy,
tried to remedy the fault which had nothing to do with them
but with someone else, even if late.”
In a kind of collective contrition, soon after the deployment
of the Republic in Portugal (October 5th 1910), the first
Republican administration of Ponta Delgada’s Town Hall,
by proposal of one of its members, Evaristo Ferreira Travassos,
decided to give ‘the name of Passeio Público Theodore
Roosevelt to the former Passeio Público da Mãe de Deus, as
a homage the city of Ponta Delgada paid to that great
American citizen for his visit in March 1909”. This locative landmark, today forgotten, is the only one in Azorean land
celebrating the figure of a President of the United States of
America, incidentally one of the few – together with
Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln – to have his effigy carved out in stone on the granite slopes of Mount Rushmore,
one of the most cherished national monuments of NorthAmerican collective memory.

numa manhã de bruma,
ajudei a devolver ao

Luís na Fajãzinha das Flores). 1 Escrevi para o primeiro semanário distribuído em todas as ilhas, bebi
tantos gin-tonics no Peter do Faial que já me convenci de que fui eu que os inventei (e estou disposto a defender a tese em tribunal), fui júri de um concurso de jovens talentos literários, apresentei livros
meus e de outros, argui mestrados, comi na cantina da faculdade de ciências, atrasei-me para o avião
no aeroporto da Terceira, fui de traineira ao Corvo,
ouvi histórias mirabolantes de piratas e noivas afogadas a um senhor com, graças a Deus, mais imaginação que juízo.
Não, para continental não está mal. Já levei o meu
filho mais velho a Santa Maria e o mais novo ao
Faial. Li em pequeno O Enigma da Atlântida, episódio terceiro das aventuras de Blake & Mortimer,

Continental, it’s not bad at all. I’ve visited the nine
Azorean islands, I saw whales, I ate a cozido in Furnas,
I visited the Sete Cidades Lagoon on a misty morning, I
helped translate into Portuguese a book by Alfred Lewis
(born Alfredo Luís in Fajãzinha das Flores). 1 I have written for the first weekly newspaper distributed in all the
islands, I have drunk so many gin tonics at Peter’s in Faial
that I have convinced myself that I was the one to have
invented them (and I am willing to defend this in court
if need be), I was a member of a jury in a contest of
young literary talents, I have presented books, mine and
others, I have been on Master’s committees, I had lunch
at the Faculty of Sciences canteen, I was late at catching
the plane at Terceira airport, I went to Corvo aboard a
trawler, I heard extraordinary stories of pirates and drowned brides told by a man with , thank God, more imagination than wits.
No, not bad indeed for a Continental. I have taken my
eldest son to Santa Maria and the youngest to Faial. I read,
as a child, Atlantis Mystery, the third episode of the adventures of Blake & Mortimer, with my favorite comics
characters encountering that lost civilization precisely in
the volcanic Azorean lands. At the end of the adventure,
space ships set off toward the future leaving from Sete

viu. E que não há sítio mais lógico para a Atlântida,
a ter existido, ter existido. Não subi ainda ao Pico
mas fiz algo quase tão bom: sobrevoei o Pico. Comi
queijo de S. Jorge em S. Jorge, desci as ruas íngremes da Graciosa, mergulhei nas piscinas naturais das
Flores. Senti-me no centro do universo e na periferia do mundo. Vi cascatas deslumbrantes, ravinas
mágicas, vi nas furnas a terra a lançar sinais de
fumo. Escrevi um livro sobre a caça à baleia.2
Estive também na América, essa outra paisagem
natural dos Açores. Quase vi as festas do Espírito
Santo em Fall River. Ri com os vídeos no Youtube

meu amigo Frank Sousa, o padre mais levado da
breca que me foi dado ver, e que quase fez de mim
um bom cristão no lugar onde as amizades se devem
fazer: à mesa.
Conheço as nove ilhas como a palma da minha
mão. (Em abono da verdade, diga-se que conheço
mal a palma da minha mão.)
E agora colaboro na revista da SATA. Já posso morrer
feliz. Tenho 51 anos. Nasci quando Portugal ainda
era a preto e branco. Mas, pensando bem, como
bom açoriano honorário, posso fazer algo melhor.
Posso viver feliz. Posso namorar: o mundo, uma
mulher, uma viagem, um livro. Posso ver as estrelas no céu como só na ilha elas sabem ser estrelas.
Ou seja, posso ver o mundo Açores.

I ate São Jorge cheese
in São Jorge, I went
down Graciosa’s steep
streets, I dived in
Flores’ natural pools.
I felt as if I were in
the center of the
Universe and in the
outskirts of the world.

world. I saw stunning waterfalls, magical ravines; I saw
earth billowing smoke signals at the furnas. I wrote a book
on whale hunting.2
I have also been to America, that other natural landscape of the Azores. I almost attended the Espírito Santo festivities in Fall River. I laughed with the Youtube videos
of the Portuguese Kids. 3I got to know, with my friend Frank
Sousa, the most amusing priest I’ve ever met, and who
almost turned me into a good Christian in the place where
friendships should start: at table.
I know the nine islands as the back of my hand. (In truth,
I must say I don’t admit I don’t know the back of my hand
that well.)
And now I write for SATA. I can die happily now. I am
51. I was born when Portugal was still in black and
white. But, on a second thought, as a good honorary
Azorean, I can do better. I can live happily. I can court:
the world, a woman, a trip, and a book. I can see the stars
in the sky as they can only be seen in the islands, truly
as stars. That is, I can see the world Azores.4
