It basically follows two paths: lyrical or informal abstraction, which featured the artist’s gesture as a unique and intense expressive act, and the geometric abstraction, mainly agglutinated in the concretist groups of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (and at the end of the 1950’s the disseverance of the cariocas and the paulistas would occur, resulting in the articulation of Neoconcretism). Charoux is one of the participants of the paulista group. Like his colleagues, he employed geometry as a means to obtain focus and maximum communicability of form. His colors are industrial, his use of abstract rhythms intends to generate direct visual information, and it is a stimulus that is immediately converted into content, without appealing to narratives to achieve this. Rationality offers a model of objectivity, clarity and efficiency for the industry in development. In a way, this “prototype” character of art was intended to be transferred to the design, to urbanism, to promote a sensitization of daily life. It even indicates the hypothesis of a new statute for the artist who abandons the fine arts to assume the role of image producer in modern society. The concrete artist is not more fragile, feverish or condemned to repartition – he is a professional that visually synthesizes the communicative relationships in the world. His interest in precise forms, in the psychology of colors, and in an almost mathematical approximation of art is believed to promote a revolution in the spectator’s visual language and thought, who would not only begin to see it in another manner, but in a better manner. Why then would he appeal to geometry and a simple palette? The concrete artist who recognizes that he lives in a society of multitudes is interested in universal instruments of communication, among which those elements that have historically proven their value. Concrete art is more than the experience of what is seen, it is the privilege of how one sees, which mechanisms we use for conceiving a form before any other reference. It is a visual laboratory that aims, at the last moment, to reformulate the rationale of the space, whose results would then be applied in the world. He initially enrolled at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios (São Paulo School of Arts and Crafts), under the tutorship of the painter Waldemar da Costa. His early works bore an expressionist character, but by the late 1940s they already demonstrated his interest in geometric abstraction, which would lead him to constructive art. In 1952, the artist joined the Ruptura group (together with Waldemar Cordeiro, Anatol Wladyslaw, Geraldo de Barros, Leopold Haar, Kazmer Féjer and Luiz Sacilotto) and signed the homonymous manifesto that had been published at the exhibition that the artists held that year at the São Paulo Modern Art Museum and had set the foundations for concrete art in Brazil. Even after the formal dissolution of the group, Charoux’s paintings remained faithful to the language adopted in the 1950s, maintaining his interest in the psychology of the shape and approaching Op Art. In 1963, in conjunction with Hermelindo Fiaminghi and Sacilotto, he created the Associação de Artes Visuais NT – Novas Tendências (Association of Visual Arts NT – New Trends). As well as having participated in editions I, II, III, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XII and XIII of the São Paulo Art Biennial, he was also present at some of the main concrete art shows held in the 1950s, such as the I National Exhibition of Concrete Art (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, 1956-1957). In the 1960s and 1970s he had individual shows at the Novas Tendências gallery (1965) and a retrospective exhibition at the São Paulo Modern Art Museum (1975), and another at the same place in 1978, five years after being awarded by the Association of Art Critics as São Paulo’s best draftsman. The main collective exhibitions in which he featured in- cluded the 1970, 1971, 1974, 1977 and 1979 editions of the Panorama Atual da Arte Brasileira (Panorama of Brazilian Art), the Salões Nacionais de Arte Moderna (National Modern Art Shows) of 1970 to 1973, the 1st Santos Biennial (1971, where he won first prize) and the Projeto Construtivo na Arte Brasileira (Constructive Project in Brazilian Art) (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, 1977). Since his death, the numerous exhibitions in which his work has been displayed include Grupo Rupture: revisit of the original exhibition, at the Centro Universitária Maria Antonia (São Paulo) and Concreta 56: the root of the shape (São Paulo Modern Art Museum, 2006). In 2005 the art historia, Maria Alice Milliet, published a book about the artist. vanguardists of the first half of the century with their industrial and democratic commitment. The desired transformation is complete – giving rise to the interchange between the concrete artists and the concrete poets: there is a reinvention of word, color, and form. And there is also a new rhythm and diction gained in speech, as well as for vision (one only need note the changes occurring in advertising and in visual design after this point). With good reason, the idea of the object emerges in that context, since it escapes traditional methods of experience and perception. The painting of Shiró would correspond to the opposite of that program. Informal abstraction did not cause the organization of a group, nor did it write manifestos. It would be impossible, given that its centrality lies in what is unique to the individual. It is materialized in dirty colors, with varying, irregular thickness and brush strokes, in a swamp of material – it is a painting without a design, born of the experience and the moment, born with each gesture. Evidently it is not an “uncontrolled” painting, but it refuses clarity of form. Its dialogue with the spectator occurs before the intimate sharing of profound states that would express the restlessness of emotion in the world oscillating between being rationalized and proclaiming post-war horror. Informalism is the insistence of the lyrical ego without concessions. Such a belief accentuates its dissention from the concretist groups. However, it is curious to note that between the two extremes, the problem of abstraction gives rise to another perspective in relationship to artistic work in the Brazilian scenario. In this search for first forms, beyond the figure, resides the interest for a new visuality attentive to the search for a creative, original and essential energy, whose force is not wasted illustrating stories, but making art communicate for itself, even by following the example once credited to music as the pure language. em última instância, reformular o ra- num pântano de matéria – é uma ciocínio do espaço, cujos resultados pintura sem projeto, que nasce da seriam, assim, aplicados no mundo. vivência e do instante, nascida a cada Sua origem reside nas vanguardas gesto. He moved to São Paulo in 1940, establishing contact with the Santa Helena Group, the influence of which can be observed in some of his paintings from that period. In 1947 Shiró participated in the Seibi group, which gathered artists of Japanese origina and, in the course of its existence, had members such as Yoshiya Takaoka, Manabu Mabe, Tikashi Fukushima and Tomie Ohtake. In the 1950s Shiró’s painting displayed the characteristics of informal abstraction, progressing until the next decade, when he started once again to insinuate figurative elements, which were definitively incorporated into his work in the 1970s. In 1953 he moved to Paris, where he would study at the École Supérieure de Beaux-Arts with Gino Severini and Johnny Friedlander. Since 1984 he has lived between the French capital and Rio de Janeiro, where he had already lived from 1948 until his departure. During this interval he has traveled extensively in Brazil and abroad (as well as returning to São Paulo in 1951, and living in Salvador in 1959), which led his participation in the Austral group (Phases Movement) in the 1960s and his making contact with Marcel Duchamp in 1965. In the course of his artistic career, he has taken part in collective exhibitions such as 19 Pintores (1949, São Paulo), editions I, IV, VI, VII. VIII. IX, XVIII and XX of the São Paulo Art Biennial (between 1951 and 1989), the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes (National Fine Art Show) in 1949 and the 1952 and 1959 editions of the Salão Nacional de Arte Moderna (National Modern Art Show). The numerous foreign exhibitions he has taken part in since the late 1950s include the Salon Réalités Nouvelles (Paris, 1958, 1961, 1967), the First Collective Exhibition of Brazilian Artists in Europe (Hamburg, Leverkusen and Munique, Germany; Vienna, Austria; Lisbon, Portugal; Madrid, Spain; Utrecht, Holland and 26 o m u s e u d e a r t e c o n t e m p o r â n e a d e n i t e r ó i : a s c o l e ç õ e s Paris, 1959-1960), the II Paris Biennial (1961), Art Latin American – Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark, 1969), L’Amérique Latine à Paris (1982-83) and, more recently in Brazil, the Bienal Brasil 20th Century (1994) and the Mostra do Redescobrimento (Rediscovery Exhibition) (2000). Having been awarded in 1960 by the Guggenheim Museum in Nova York, the artist has accumulated over 30 solo exhibitions, including three at the Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro (1959, 1965 and 1993), others at the Modern Art Museum of Bahia (1960), the Contemporary Art Museum of São Paulo (1965), the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute (Washington, USA, 1975), Espace Latino-Américain With preserved experimental volition, the universalism of abstract art is transformed into a clash with the vulgarization of the cultural industry. A year after finishing O inquietante rival (The Disconcerting Rival), Antonio Dias declares his disbelief in the salvationist power of art in a film by Antônio Carlos Fontoura (Ver-Ouvir [See-Listen]). It is not about conformism, but about questioning the place of art in those times. The work is symptomatic: it seems inevitable to compare its austerity of colors and its character as an object (it is neither precisely painting, nor sculpture, nor relief, meaning, it does not maintain the characteristics of the traditional categories) with the chromatic and spatial structure of Concretism and Neoconcretism. Nevertheless, those colors are no longer the equation of pure form, but they originate in the culture of half of the decade they were able to find strength Se a conclusão dos projetos constru- ma pura, mas provêm da cultura de tivos brasileiros encontra seu desen- massas – revistas em quadrinhos, fo- lace no impasse de seu ponto culmi- focas, etc. O artista declararia ainda nante corresponder a sua dissolução o quanto havia de vivência pessoal e – consideremos que em cinco anos, imaginativa ali. More than just breaking the supposed bond between subjectivity and the cliché of an expressive gesture, the question is: how does the subject formulate his images, considering the avalanche of references coming from cinema, TV, and various media that invent our memory? It is in this sense, for example, that we can deepen the eventual similarity of his drawing with that of comics without falling into the schematic or anecdotal: it is about another narrative time of the image and its phantasmagoric tracks, besides the disenchantment with the nature of the sensitive experience, when appropriated and disseminated by the cultural industry: the profile of a baby in the negative doesn’t exist, but a graphic “design” repeatedly linked in various places and situations; the drawing is almost a memorabile, a “remembrance” born of that “depreciated” visuality – it is the image of the image. Perhaps this has been one of the keenest signs of our problematic relationship with North-American Pop. It was not only about emphasizing the incongruence of waiting for a pop style to be born in the peripheral capitalism of more than incomplete or interrupted modernity, but also about accentuating how much this collateral imaginary would obligatorily be born of the actual impasse of living based on a culture of indirect images, of remnants, of memories not only of that which cannot yet be lived, but also the prelude to the long nightmare that would come in the following years. mento da censura e da opressão cada vez mais agudas. rém de acentuar o quanto esse imaginário colateral nascia obrigatoriamente do próprio impasse de viver a base de uma cultura de imagens indiretas, de vestígios, de lembranças não só do que ainda não se poderia A n to n i o D i a s [19 4 4 ] O i n q u i e ta n t e r i va l , 19 59 T é c n i c a m i s ta : ó l e o s o b r e a g l o m e r a d o ( e u c at e x ) , t e c i d o , m e ta l e p o l i é s t e r 131 x 14 5 c m T h e D i s co n c e r t i n g R i va l , 1959 viver, como do prenúncio do longo m i x e d T e c h n i q u e : o i l o n c h i p b oa r d, pesadelo que viria nos anos a seguir. 131 x 14 5 c m fa b r i c , m e ta l a n d p o ly e s t e r inARTS.com its pact with democracy. He attended the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, where he studied under the engraver Oswaldo Goeldi. His works began to attract interest early on, when it stood out amongst the new wave of artists who participated in the Opinião 65, Opinião 66 and Nova Objetividade Brasileira exhibitions. Having already been dealing with the interlacement of languages, in the early 1960s the artist developed a critical relationship with Pop art and the French Nouveu Réalisme and, later in that decade, especially after his moves to Paris (in 1966) and Milan (1968), he intensified the experimental perspective and the investigation into different media, such as installations, records, films, and others, carried through up to recent works. In 1972 he received a fellowship at the Simon Guggenheim Foundation, New York, where he worked throughout that year (in 1988 he would become a fellow at the DAAD – Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst, in Berlin). In 1977 he traveled to India and Nepal, studying paper production techniques, which resulted in the production of the album of Trama wood engravings. Throughout his career spanning over 40 years, he has participated in the 1981, 1994 and 1998 editions of the São Paulo Art Biennial, the 1965 Paris Biennial, the Venice Biennial (1980), the 6th International Exhibition (Guggenheim Museum, New York, 1971), Prospect 86 (Frankfurt, Germany, 1986) and other collective exhibitions dedicated to 20 th century art, such as Global Conceptualism (Queens Museum of Art, New York) and Heterotopias: medio siglo sin lugar (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, 2000). While following his career as an ar tist, he simultaneously studied at the School of Psychology at the former Universidade do Brasil, now Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ). In the 1960s he took part in the Opinião 66 and Nova Objetividade Brasileira exhibitions, both at the Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro and in the 9th São Paulo Art Biennial, all of which would be of decisive importance for the emergance of a new generation of Brazilian artists. Between the late 1960s and early 1970s he focused on resistance activities against the militar y dictatorship, practically interrupting his career, which he would resume in 1973. The works that Zilio produced between the 1960s and 1970s have very strong political, social and cultural content, which led the artist to experiment with different artistic languages and, subsequently, develop parallel actions in the field of art, such as his participation in the creation of the magazines Malasartes (1975-1976) and Gávea (1984), the publication of the book A Querela do Brasil (1982) and his academic teaching. From the 1980s onwards, his production has been directed mainly at painting, as a result of a series of exhibitions seen in Paris in the late 1970s (where he lived and studied between 1976 and 1980, completing a master’s degree and doctorate). The principal collective exhibitions he has taken part in include Prospectiva (Museum of Contemporary Art of USP, 1974), 10 th Paris Biennial (1977), Do Moderno ao Contemporâneo – Coleção Gilber to Chateaubriand (Fundação Calouste Goulbenkian, Lisbon, 1982), Biennial 20 th Century (São Paulo, 1994), Panorama da Arte Brasileira (Panorama of Brazilian Art) (editions 1997 and 1999), Situações Limite – arte brasileira: anos 1970 (Limit Situations – Brazilian Art: the 1970s) (Casa França-Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, 2000), Arte como questão (Art as an Issue) (São Paulo, Insituto Tomie Ohtake, 2007), the 6th Mercosul Biennial (2007) and ARCO (Madri, Espanha, 2008). In 1969 he made his Condutores de Percepção (Perception Conductors), indicating the field explored by the artist and in 1971 he took part in his first collective exhibition. Waltercio’s work always addresses the tension between the visual present of the object and the frustrated attempt by the spectator to apply meanings to it. However, this investigation is performed with highly refined visual rigour, as can be perceived in the artist’s installations, objects, sculptures and drawings. The principal solo exhibitions presented by the artist include: Waltercio Caldas: objetos e desenhos (Waltercio Caldas: objects and drawings) (Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro, 1973. Awarded by the Brazilian Art Critics’ Association as the best exhibition in the city that year), A Natureza dos Jogos (The Nature of Games) (São Paulo Art Museum, 1975), Waltercio Caldas Jr.: Objetos e desenhos (Objects and Drawings) (Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro, 1976), Aparelhos (Apparatus) (Luisa Strina Gallery, São Paulo, 1979), Ping Ping (Saramenha Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, 1980), Zero é um (Zero is one) (Espaço ABC-Funarte, Rio de Janeiro, 1980), Waltercio Caldas: esculturas (Waltercio Caldas: Sculptures) (Funarte, Rio de Janeiro, 1988), Pulitzer Art Gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1990), Waltercio Caldas: Esculturas e desenhos (Sculptures and Drawings) (Kanaal Art Foundation, Kortrijk, Belgium, Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, Netherlands, 19911992), Esculturas (Sculptures) (Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, 1993 – awarded by the Brazilian Art Critics’ Association as exhibition of the year), Anotações 1969/1996 (Notes 1969/1996) (Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, 1996), Mar Nunca Nome (Sea Never Name) (Centro Cultural Light, Rio de Janeiro, 1998), Sculptures (Lelong Gallery, New York, 58 o m u s e u d e a r t e c o n t e m p o r â n e a d e n i t e r ó i : a s c o l e ç õ e s 1998), Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva, Switzerland, 1995), Livros (Books) (Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro, 1999; Rio Grande do Sul Art Museum and São Paulo State Pinacoteca, 2002) and Waltercio Caldas 1985/2000 (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Brasília and Rio de Janeiro, 2001). He was also the coeditor of the magazine Malasartes (1975-1976) and published the books Manual da Ciência Popular (1982) and Aparelhos (1979). In 2003 a book dedicated to his oeuvre was published by Cosac Naify publishing house. resented the alienating patronization of our oscillating industrialization (that had seemed to only absorb the afflictions of the modern world). But to denounce false certainty does not mean one believes that returning to the “good old times” is the solution. It is only one more detouring modality of the problem. And this becomes the way to resist and survive the barbarity. If Artur Barrio’s Trouxas (Parcels) exposed the horror of the anonymity of official extermination, if years before Antonio Manuel with his Eis o saldo (Here the Outcome) also reveals the technology of the horror, the work of Zilio perturbs through its suffocating neutrality. Everything can be calculated, classified, catalogued. The rupture of form, however, is the calculated liberty of the system. It is more than the simple dismantlement of the space or the pictorial form, it is the disseverance for clarity and for demystification of the emotive spectator – the content is visible and unavoidable, and to interpret it without deviation is a question of political clarity. The tension of the visible – to not only inquire about what is seen, but to ask one’s self what is or is not intended to be decoded from something would follow a good part of the experimental production from the 1970’s (can we really believe in what we see? And what do we suppose to understand from what we see?). We can perceive this in the work of Waltercio Caldas. Our perplexity resides in our having all the elements within sight and despite this, we feel incapable of asserting the narrative to which they are a part. What clarity would this be that the more evident it is, the more obscure it is? The enigma, however, is in the habit that we secularly deposit in the vision as the last witness of the truth. If the arts, practice by excellence that we credit the authority to what we evaluate visually, can no longer be guaranteed by these classic presuppositions, what would make us trust in its other parts; in conclusion, in its system of values and culture? Such questioning, which in Brazil began in the 1960’s, in the following decade purposely reaches its point of exasperation, also stimulating a study of other languages that might escape the usual and consecrated practices – painting, sculpture, printing, etc. – by which society would attribute its locations and objects of recognition of art and reproduction of its social mechanisms of existence. wa lt e rc i o c a l da s [19 4 6 ] A I l u s ã o , 19 6 9 C ai x a d e c o u r o e v e l u d o , c o r o a e m m e ta l e s t r a s s 26 , 5 x 12 x 2 8 , 5 c m T h e I l l u s i o n , 19 6 9 l e at h e r a n d v e lv e t b o x , m e ta l a n d s t r a s s 26 . 5 x 12 x 2 8 . 5 c m do espaço ou da forma pictórica, é obscura? Even among the young artists of that period there were internal differences in the similarity with painting. It is a fact that predominates a gestural quality and evidence of manual labor, the making of the artist interested in the German Neo-Expressionism and the Italian Transavantgarde movements. Meanwhile, the involvement with history at times preferred the accumulation of citations of art history, frequently mixing it with images from the media of mass communication, and at times seeking a dialogue with the formalization of that space in its material constitution and its processes, meaning, how the painting is born of the experience of its conquests and inquiries. Rodrigo Andrade belonged to the paulista group, Casa 7, which made the second of the above options. Casa 7 was unique in relation to the predominating practices of the 1980’s: instead of the emphasis on the individual figure as a type of star, the presence of the studio’s collective work is favored, not in the sense of a joint work, but as the exchange of ideas, experiences and simultaneous debates about artistic practice. Its dialogue passes through the effective construction of painting. In other words, it discusses how its space and its images are born from its occupation – the reaction of the paint on the support, its resistance capacity, the manner in which the gesture is made through this game of forces between the brush, paint and support as evidences of artistic work and the tensions of its comings and goings: then the viscosity of industrial paint, which does not allow for manipulation with the same cadence as oil, and the reactions of the paper used as support. On the other hand, when oil paint is used, the accumulation and exasperated superimposition of layers and materials generated a movement between the surface and the more than optic, physical thickness of the painting. The resulting space there has a strange perspective, which does not mean there is a receding of the frontal planes towards the background, nor an advance of these off the support. The following decade he studied with Carlos Fajardo and attended the École de Beaux-Arts, in Paris. From 1982 to 1985, already back in São Paulo, he joins Fabio Miguez, Nuno Ramos, Paulo Monteiro and Carlito Carvalhosa to form the Casa 7 group, which would play an important role in the 1980s scenario of artistic painting. Rodrigo Andrade’s paintings, which at that time bore a strong neo-expressionist aspect, would become increasingly denser in the following years, dealing with allusions to the urban environment. The collective exhibitions he has featured in include the 1981, 82, 83, 85 and 89 editions of the Salão Nacional de Artes Plásticas (National Plastic Arts Show), the Casa 7 exhibitions at the USP Museum of Contemporary Art and the Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro (1985), the 18th São Paulo Art Biennial (1985), the Panorama da Arte Brasileira at the Modern Art Museum of São Paulo (1995, 2005), Espelho Cego: seleções de uma coleção contemporânea (Blind Mirror: selections of a contemporary collection) (Modern Art Museum of São Paulo and Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, 2001), Caminhos do Contemporâneo (Contemporary Paths) (Paço Imperial, 2002), 2080 (Modern Art Museum of São Paulo, 2003), Onde está você, geração 80 (Where are you, 80s generation) (Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, 2004), ARCO (Madrid, Spain, 2008) and Panorama dos Panoramas (Panorama of Pano ramas) (Modern Art Museum of São Paulo, 2008). Meanwhile, in Catunda’s case, the “coincidence” between the image and support “randomly” chosen guards subtleties; there is a certain feminine irony there – the blanket that protects from the cold receives the image of the fur coats, which fulfills the same function, but bringing symbolic and social values (luxury, consumption, simultaneous protection and seduction). Suspended on the wall, the blanket not only announces those fetishes, but the space of the painting is transformed into a display window. The praise of the pleasure of the 1980’s does not cease to guard a certain cynicism – one could say a certain dissolution – before its own spontaneous enthusiasm that would negotiate the process of redemocratization of the country (to be free is to be a consumer). vínculo inextrincável em que a pintu- protege do frio recebe a imagem dos ra e a imagem assumem outro tipo de casacos de pele, que cumpre a mesma consistência física, ao deixarem de ser função, mas traz outros valores sim- planos virtuais, e da imagem coinci- bólicos e sociais (o luxo, o consumo, dir corporalmente com o lugar onde a proteção e sedução simultâneas). se deposita, uma “osmose” criadora Suspenso na parede, o cobertor não de outro plano. apenas anuncia aqueles fetiches, mas É interessante observar que o tra- o espaço d a pintura se transmuta em balho de Leda Catunda, que se apro- vitrine. Modular geometric vocabulary instigated the conception of games through the idea of Jogos de Fluência Criativa (Creative Fluency Games) offering the aesthetic-creative experimentation to the public from the actual formal repertoire of the work of art and the artistic procedure used by the artists. Artistic experimentations promoted the passage of the artistic representation from the place to the space, enabling the participation of the spectator, who by manipulating the work articulates and experiments the stages of explorations and leaps to new solutions in the bi-dimensional and tridimensional space. New Figuration emerges in the mid1960’s with a theme based on political and social issues. The “resuming of painting” occurs twenty years later through the “80’s Generation,” also characterized by the liberty of experimentations and the presence of the artist’s personal universe and mass culture (although in a different manner than in the 1960’s). These two sets inspire the proposal of “Cada olhar uma história (Each View One Story)”. The pieces of the game reproduce the forms used in the works of art enabling the formation of differentiated compositions that dialogue with the artists’ proposals. The marble sculpture by the artist Sergio Camargo – Untitled (1968) –, formed by cylindrical pieces, enabled the construction of a modular game in the form of solids. Removal and appropriation of objects and materials of the daily world for the universe of art. The use of different materials such as metals, papers, fabrics, and wood taken from the daily world and the study of their materiality through the artists’ construction of their works enabled experimentations with the natural properties of the raw material and the establishment of the state of observation and analysis of its potentialities, its symbolic value and its use in the Deslocamento e apropriação de objetos e materiais do mundo cotidiano para o universo da arte. The removal, appropriation of daily objects and their incorporation into the universe of art in the achievement of the work instigate the reflection and discussion about the integration or the limits between art and life. The social commitment as imagined by Niemeyer is constituted with the impulses of engagements between art and society. With this consciousness, we extend the practices and functions of MAC with the Environmental Action Art Project. The project began in 1999 with the community of Morro do Palácio, in partnership with the Family Doctor Program. The art education actions with the youth of the Palace Hill community resulted in the need to create the Module of Community Action. The building with architectonic design created by Oscar Niemeyer and constructed within the community is located in an area near the museum, interconnecting and expanding the field of group action for the creation of programs in which artists and educators work directly with the realities of the populations marginalized from the instruments of cultural citizenship. The Module of Community Action’s basic nucleus is based on artistic and environmental workshops that seek to offer mechanisms for a better quality of community life, the opportunity of professional education, and insertion into the universe of art and culture to the inhabitants of Palace Hill. O compromisso social vislumbrado por área próxima ao Museu, interligando Niemeyer se conjuga com os impulsos e ampliando o campo de ação conjun- de engajamentos entre arte e socie- ta para a criação de programas em dade.
