Today’s engineering offers attractive sales potential for tomorrow
The clutch transmits the force, the release bearing provides the
functionality. The concentric slave cylinder combines the clutch
slave cylinder and the conventional release bearing in a single
component. Compact and designed as a coherent package, these
assemblies are now installed in every second new vehicle with a
clutch – and result in sales potentials for the aftermarket of the
future.
LuK release bearings or concentric slave cylinders
More and more clutches are actuated by means of the hydraulic
concentric slave cylinder. Here the slave cylinder is arranged at the
center of the clutch and lies within the clutch bell housing.

More drive for the business, more comfort on the road
Developments from LuK are innovations based on many years of
experience in the drive train field. The dual mass flywheel (DMF),
the damped flywheel clutch (DFC) and the self-adjusting clutch
(SAC) are just a few examples. They have all been successful on
the market and are supplied directly to numerous vehicle
manufacturers – the best recommendation for replacement in OE
quality!
Dual mass flywheel (DMF)
When LuK launched the dual mass flywheel back in the 1980s, it
was as an absolute technological innovation on the market. Today
one in four passenger cars in Europe has one: LuK supplies it to
more than 20 automakers. The DMF performs two functions: first,
it holds the ring gear for starting the engine, and second, it dampens
vibration throughout the drive train. To do so the vibration disc
comprises two masses, which can be rotated via a bearing up to
170° against each other. The two decoupled masses are connected
by means of a spring damper system with a very strong damping
coefficient. This not only prevents noise: the dual mass flywheel
also facilitates driving at low RPM, and that saves fuel.
LuK special DMF tool
Inspecting the dual mass flywheel during clutch replacement is
usually a very complicated matter. The special DMF tool developed
by LuK makes it possible to carry out the most important
measurements under workshop conditions – and without having
to remove the dual mass flywheel.
Damped flywheel clutch (DFC)
The DFC is a further development of the dual mass flywheel, whereby
the clutch disc, pressure plate and crankshaft bolts are already
integrated. It forms a single, highly compact module that simplifies
replacement and makes installation virtually foolproof.
Self-adjusting clutch (SAC)
The introduction of ever more powerful engines also created demand
for clutches with higher transmission torques. This in turn raises
the force required to actuate the clutch pedal. The more the clutch
is worn during operation, the higher that required force becomes.
The self-adjusting clutch compensates for this wear. This is
accomplished by means of wedges that automatically adjust the
assembly. As a result, the relatively low release forces and diaphragm
spring geometry are maintained over the entire service life of the
clutch. The continuous adjustment of the release forces also
decreases wear extending the service life.

Innovations for the market of the future
Leading passenger car manufacturers report an increasing share
of automobiles equipped with automatic transmissions. LuK
responds to this trend with innovations for the market of the future:
parallel shift gearboxes (PSG), auto shift gearboxes (ASG) and
continuously variable transmissions (CVT) are designed to enhance
driving comfort and dynamics – and not only for large sedans.
PSG
Also known as the double clutch transmission, the parallel shift
transmission consists of two partial transmissions separated into
even and odd gears as well as a double clutch. When changing
gears, torque is continuously transferred from one clutch to the
other. The resulting transition between gears is exceptionally
smooth, and comparable to that of an automatic transmission.
Moreover, the PSG features extremely low fuel consumption.
ASG
The auto shift transmission consists of three electric motors that
perform the movements that the driver normally actuates via the
clutch pedal and the gearshift directly on the transmission. The
transmission itself is unchanged and the design is compact. With
a good level of comfort the gears can be changed manually or
automatically on a transmission with ASG components from LuK.
An electric servomotor releases the clutch at the touch of the
gearshift lever. A sensor then recognizes the gear selected and
another electric servomotor engages that gear. The result is an
automatic that nonetheless offers considerable advantages over
fully automatic transmissions with converters. Eliminating the

converter, for example, significantly reduces weight, prevents
sluggishness and saves costs. That’s why the ASG is also suited for
use in smaller vehicles.
CVT
Continuously variable transmissions can be based on various
operating principles. The chain-driven variable transmission has
proven suitable for use in passenger cars, whereby it has been
restricted mainly to the low end of the power range in the past.
With LuK CVT components (pulley sets, link-plate chain and
hydraulics), the first high-performance CVT operating on the chain
drive principle is now available for use with powerful engines with
torques ranging up to 380 Nm. The transmission ratio between the
engine and the drive wheels changes continuously with the width
of the wedge-shaped pulley. Conventional gear changes disappear
entirely, mechanically fixed transmission ratios and discontinuities
between gears become a thing of the past: an infinite number of
drive ratios permits the engine to always run under optimum
operating conditions.

The torque converter from LuK for a changing market
LuK was quick to position itself as an engineering partner to
manufacturers of vehicles with automatic transmissions. With the
development and production of its own torque converter, LuK also
accommodates the growing automatic market.
Torque converters
Hydraulic torque converters are primarily used in conventional
(stepwise) automatic transmissions and infinitely variable (stepless)
CVT transmissions. The converter is mounted between the engine
and the transmission and transmits the torque from the engine to
the transmission input shaft. The torque is transmitted hydrodynamically during acceleration and via an integrated slip clutch
to lower fuel consumption during driving operation. When
accelerating the converter also raises the torque to the transmission
input shaft by as much as a factor of three. LuK optimizes the
converter characteristics depending on the required performance
data and the available installation space supplying a component
ideally matched to the automobile.

Power steering pumps from LuK combine performance
and long service life
The power steering pump first appeared in its current form in 1925.
The basic principle of the vane pump has been the subject of
continuous further development ever since. The use of special LuK
energy saving pumps as original equipment makes it possible, for
instance, to reduce energy consumption by up to 50% – another
example of efficiency through innovation.
Power steering pumps from LuK
95% of all power steering pumps used in power steering systems
today use double-stroke vanes as well as an integrated flow
regulation valve and a pressure limiting valve. They offer excellent
efficiency, even at extreme temperatures and at high operating
pressures of up to 180 bar.
The LuK power steering pumps are quiet and lightweight and their
low bearing loads ensure long service life.
> TIP:
LuK power steering pumps are subject to very low wear. For
perfect function, however, it is important to monitor and
maintain proper oil levels. Along with leak-tightness of the
connections, correct operation should always be checked
during inspection. In case of problems or defects, this part
must be completely replaced. When replacing the power
steering pump, it is also absolutely essential to clean the
oil circulation system.

As a KIT, SET or single pulley
Belt drive systems consist of belts, tensioner and idler pulleys. As
pulleys and belts should always be replaced together, Schaeffler
Group Automotive Aftermarket’s product range also includes
complete belt drive KITs consisting of pulleys and belts. There are
currently more than 410 different KITs available for passenger cars.
Alternatively, there are also belt drive SETs that contain only the
pulleys. The product range also includes individual pulleys, of
course. In order to help keep track of this huge variety extensive
catalogs have been published.
Overrunning alternator pulley
The overrunning alternator pulley decouples the alternator from
rotational irregularities of the crankshaft. It dampens belt vibrations,
shortens the tensioner paths and extends the service life of the
belt. In addition, it reduces the force level around the ribbed belt
drive and improves the noise characteristics of the belt drive
system.
It is mainly used in vehicles with a diesel engine and dual mass
flywheel, in automatic transmissions with high shifting impulse and
in alternators with a high mass moment of inertia. The required
special tool is also supplied by Schaeffler Group Automotive
Aftermarket.
> TIP:
Overrunning alternator pulleys should always be replaced
when replacing belt drive components. When each separate
component is right, then the result is right too!

The ideal technology for certain applications
Chain drives have been used in internal combustion engines from
the earliest days of motoring – especially because of their positive
force transmission and long service life. Above all, chain drives
provide high reliability, economy and maintenance-free
operation – it’s no wonder therefore that so many modern engines
today are equipped with chain drives by INA.
Primary drives
Depending on the application, timing chains of various pitches and
types are used to drive camshafts. Chain tensioning elements,
which generally have hydraulic damping, compensate for wear and
ensure that the chain runs in a smooth and controlled manner
despite irregular crankshaft rotation and varying drive torque from
the camshaft(s).
Balance shaft drives
Modern engines are subject to continually increasing demands for
comfort that can often only be met by means of balance shafts.
The balance shaft drive connects the crankshafts with the balance
shafts. Depending on the engine concept, these rotate at the
crankshaft speed or twice this speed and thus compensate the
inertial force and mass moments of the crankshaft drive.
Accessory drives
The torque used to drive most injection pumps, water pumps and
oil pumps is provided by accessory drives. These components can
either be integrated into existing drive systems or driven by a
separate chain.

Valve lash is caused by thermally induced change in length and
wear. Regardless of the type of engine, it is extremely important to
eliminate any possibility of excess valve lash. This is the only way
to ensure that key performance parameters remain stable
throughout the life of the engine. For the replacement parts market
INA offers the full range of mechanical and hydraulic valve tappets
as well as rocker arm and finger follower sets.
Valve tappets
Valve lash can be held in check with mechanical or hydraulic valve
tappets fabricated with the highest possible precision in terms of
shape, dimensions and surface quality. They reduce valve lash to
a clearly defined limit. This results in engines that deliver quiet,
economical and environmentally sound operation over the course
of a long service life. Hydraulic valve tappets require no maintenance
whatsoever: their use completely eliminates the need for adjustment
over the lifetime of the engine. Such valve tappets are developed
and manufactured by INA, the market leader in this product group.

Rocker arms and finger followers
When required for design reasons rocker arms or finger followers
can be used to control valves. The roller bearing-mounted sheet
metal finger followers that INA introduced a few years ago are
increasingly taking the place of conventional designs. Extremely
narrow and with less moving mass, the new generation finger
follower has lower friction thanks to its roller bearing support.
Moreover, extra-large protrusion ensures precise guidance along
the valve stem, and the setup of an integrated cam roller lubrication
system eliminates the need for external lubrication.
> TIP:
To ensure high-quality engine maintenance, only new valve
tappets and rocker arms or finger followers should be used.
Hydraulic valve tappets or support elements and rocker
arms or finger followers may be installed only in engines
specifically designed to accommodate them. Finger followers
must always be replaced as complete units together with
their support elements!

The original equipment flywheel made of solid grey cast iron ensures
smooth operation in IVECO, MAN, Mercedes-Benz and Renault
vehicles. When replacing the clutch in vehicles from these
manufacturers, it is extremely important also to inspect the flywheel
and its pilot bearing at the same time. Defective flywheels cause
the clutch disc to wear prematurely. The LuK installation kit for

SAC – innovative, comfortable, durable
The self-adjusting clutch (SAC) is one of the outstanding LuK innovations in the clutch
area. As its first manufacturer, LuK introduced this clutch type as original equipment
and also supplies it to the aftermarket for use in light commercial vehicles.
Self-adjusting clutch
The introduction of ever more powerful engines created demand for clutches with
higher transmission torques. This raises, in turn, the force required to actuate the
clutch pedal. The more the clutch wears during operation, the higher the force
becomes.
The SAC type clutch continuously measures the increasing release load and specifically
compensates for the diminishing thickness of the facing material. This is accomplished
by means of wedges that use centrifugal force to automatically adjust the assembly.
As a result, relatively low release forces remain constant over the entire service life
of the clutch. The continuous adjustment of the release forces also decreases wear
extending the service life.

Dual Mass Flywheels in OE quality
The dual mass flywheel – or DMF for short – was introduced to the
market as an absolute innovation in the 1980s. Today in Europe it
is installed in one out of every four passenger cars or commercial
vehicles up to 7.5 tons. Successful in serial production, promising
in the aftermarket!
The DMF from LuK
The vibrations that inevitably occur in the drive train of a vehicle
are perceived as rattling, humming or clattering. The lower the
engine RPM, the stronger they become. To combat this problem,
LuK developed the dual mass flywheel: the DMF comprises two
masses, which can be rotated via a deep groove ball bearing up to
170° against each other. The two decoupled masses are connected
by means of a spring damper system with a very strong damping
coefficient. This minimizes unpleasant noises and provides a
comfortable ride at low RPM – which in turn allows for lower fuel
consumption.

Tractor clutches from Schaeffler Group Automotive Aftermarket are
tailored to meet the special requirements of the user: these clutches
must not only ensure driving operation, but also often have to
power a virtually unlimited variety of machinery via the take-off
shaft. The LuK range offers the right tractor clutch for every
application – high quality and ease of operation included.
Single, double and dual-disc clutches
LuK manufactures around 250,000 tractor clutches each year for
its complete product range, making it the leading manufacturer in
the sector: it includes single and double clutches. They can be
actuated together or independently from one another and range
from 225 to 380 mm in diameter.
There are two systems: two single clutches are installed in the
tractor at different locations. One is situated between the engine
and the transmission, and the other – for the power take-off – takes
the form of an oil-filled multiple-disc clutch in the transmission.
The alternative system comprises two dry single-disc clutches
housed together in an enclosure located in between the engine
and the transmission. They use a common diaphragm spring, which
saves space, weight and cost. Regardless of whether they are
operated separately or together it always involves two clutches.

Torsion damper
Without effective damping tractor operation is extremely loud and
driving comfort is severely reduced, especially during extended
operation. Damper units reduce wear on the transmission and the
front PTO caused by constant vibration of the rotating parts.
Depending on the working load of the tractor, the damper is – like
all rotating components – also subject to wear. A worn damper not
only causes the tractor to make loud driving noises and handle
poorly, it can also permanently damage the transmission and the
front PTO.

With more and more tractor manufacturers converting to powershift
transmissions over the past ten years, the use of a damper between
the engine and the transmission is becoming increasingly important.
LuK has always been a pioneer in this development and today offers
a broad product range specifically designed for tractor applications.
This includes axial spring dampers, wide-angle dampers and
dampers for the PTO flywheel and the front PTO. All of these
applications neutralize the torque spikes of the engine, thereby
ensuring smooth, uniform and low-noise transmission of force from
the engine to the front PTO gearbox.

80 years. Over the ensuing period the basic principle of the doublestroke vane pump has been continuously further developed. In
Europe, LuK is one of the leading brands of power steering pumps
for commercial vehicles – as original equipment and in the
independent aftermarket.
The design of power steering pumps for commercial vehicles must
ensure optimal loading of the intake chamber at high flow rates.
Made of coated material, the side plates ensure outstanding
efficiency, even at high operating pressures of up to 180 bar and
at extreme temperatures ranging as low as –40 °C and as high as
+135 °C.

today use double-stroke vanes as well as an integrated flow
regulation and a pressure limiting valve.

LuK power steering pumps are subject to very low wear. For

it is also absolutely essential to clean the oil circulation

The belt drive system of a commercial vehicle must withstand extremely high and
long-term stress caused by, among other things, heat and dirt. This can only be
achieved through the precise interaction of high-quality and professionally installed
tensioner and idler pulleys.
The function of the tension belt is essentially determined by the auxiliaries installed.
Defective auxiliaries will always cause the tension belt to wear.
INA offers various belt tensioning units. A special catalog is available to help precisely

High noise levels, vibrations, belt flutter and wear – these are only a few of the
detrimental effects that rotational irregularities of the crankshaft can have on auxiliary
system drive belts. Patented by the market leader INA in 1995, the overrunning
alternator pulley is designed to help eliminate these problems: It extends the life of
the belt ensuring the INA mobility advantage during operation.

The constant acceleration and deceleration from ignition and compression causes
rotational irregularities in the crankshaft which the belt drive system transmits to all
auxiliary equipment.
As the component with the highest mass moment of inertia the alternator has the
greatest effect on the accessory drive. In order to decouple the alternator from the
rotational irregularities of the crankshaft INA has developed an overrunning clutch
belt pulley. It is integrated into the belt drive system and fitted to the alternator shaft.
Installed by all of the major alternator manufacturers, more than 12 million overrunning
alternator pulleys are now produced and sold each year under the INA brand.
Special tool
The overrunning alternator pulley must not be installed without the appropriate special
tool (serrated or Torx profile). The required special tool is supplied by Schaeffler
Group Automotive Aftermarket.

Valve lash is caused by a thermally induced change in length and
wear. Regardless of the type of engine, it is extremely important to
eliminate any possibility of excess valve lash. This is the only way
to ensure that key performance parameters remain stable
throughout the life of the engine. For the replacement parts market
INA offers the full range of mechanical and hydraulic valve tappets
as well as rocker arm and finger follower sets for engine maintenance
in light commercial vehicles.
Valve tappets
Valve lash can be held in check with mechanical or hydraulic valve
tappets fabricated with the highest possible precision in terms of
shape, dimensions and surface quality. They reduce valve lash to
a clearly defined limit. This results in engines that deliver quiet,
economical and environmentally sound operation over the course
of a long service life. Hydraulic valve tappets require no maintenance
whatsoever: their use completely eliminates the need for adjustment
over the lifetime of the engine. Such valve tappets are developed
and manufactured by INA, the market leader in this product group.
Rocker arms and finger followers
When required for design reasons, rocker arms or finger followers
can be used to control valves. The roller bearing-mounted sheet
metal finger followers that INA introduced a few years ago are
increasingly taking the place of conventional designs. Extremely
narrow and with less moving mass, the new generation finger
follower has lower friction thanks to its roller bearing support.
Moreover, extra large protrusion ensures precise guidance along
the valve stem, and the setup of an integrated cam roller lubrication
system eliminates the need for external lubrication.
> TIP:
To ensure high quality engine maintenance in light
commercial vehicles only new valve tappets and rocker
arms or finger followers should be used. Hydraulic valve
tappets or support elements and rocker arms / finger
followers may be installed only in engines designed
accordingly.
Finger followers must always be replaced as complete
units together with their support elements!
