We position ourselves as a partner for development –
committed to the economic, social and environmental
sustainability of each community where we are present,
with the ultimate goal of helping make everyone’s lives more

7
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
MARCELO
Among the excellent results achieved, the most outstanding
highlights and indicators of the Odebrecht Group’s
performance in 2011 presented here include the diversity
and the socioeconomic impact of the projects in which we
were involved, progress on our commitments to sustainable
development, the innovative character of the businesses
in which we invested, the advances made in our social,
environmental and cultural programs, synergy between our
companies, and the confidence of our Shareholders, Clients,
Members, Investors and Society in general.
Alongside the major projects that are getting Brazil ready to
host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympics,
we are participating in ventures that are essential to
reducing the housing deficit, supporting economic activity
and expanding basic industry in this country. In 2011 we
delivered 3,500 low-income homes, participated in 11
hydroelectric projects with a total capacity of 9,523 MW,
launched two self-elevating platforms (jack-up rigs) and
carried out construction projects for industrial units in the
steel, chemical and petrochemical industries, among many
other projects.
Attuned to the requirements of sustainable growth in
Brazil, we continually strive to innovate, developing
new technologies and markets and forming strategic
partnerships. Last year, we consolidated the activities of
the Odebrecht Defesa e Tecnologia (Defense & Technology)
to meet the demands of pre-salt oil exploration, and
finalized plans for the Estaleiro Enseada do Paraguaçu
shipyard, while Odebrecht Óleo e Gás (OOG) became the first
Brazilian company to provide subsea engineering services.
Our investments in green chemicals through Braskem, in
bioenergy through ETH Bioenergia – the Brazilian company
that invested most in that segment in 2011, having planted
over 100,000 hectares of sugarcane – and in wind and
hydroelectric power through Odebrecht Energia (Energy),
reflect our commitment to environmental preservation and
our alignment with society’s new values.
In all the countries where we operate, this attitude
toward sustainable development is the essence of our
relationship with local communities and cultures. In 13
other Latin American countries besides Brazil, we are

using our expertise, technology and capability to structure
investments in sanitation (water and sewer), transportation,
housing, power generation and transmission, industrial
structures and agricultural hubs. We have established
ourselves as the leading construction company in Argentina,
and in Mexico we are responsible for the largest Brazilian
private-sector investment in that country, the construction
of Braskem’s industrial plant at the Ethylene XXI Complex,
under the responsibility of Odebrecht Engenharia Industrial
(Industrial Engineering). In Peru, we started building the
Chaglla Hydroelectric Plant, made possible by Odebrecht
Energia (Energy), its future operator, adding about 2,500
GWh/year to that nation’s power grid. In the US, we
are the leading producer of polypropylene, having also
acquired two plants in Germany. In Africa, we are playing
a leading role as partners in vital projects for development,
especially in Angola, where we have delivered over 800 km
of transmission lines and are involved in 29 ventures in
a wide range of sectors. In Mozambique, we are building
the infrastructure for mining coal, a commodity of great
importance to the local economy. We have 11,193 Members
active in Angola and 1,638 in Mozambique.
Taking part in major projects has always placed us at the
service of large swathes of humanity. In recent years, for
example, our operations of public services have multiplied
the number of people directly impacted by our operations
and made our relationship with them even closer, more vital
and ongoing. At the end of 2011, the health and well-being
of 8.3 million Brazilians and the transportation of thousands
of people and tons of cargo in Brazil, Colombia, Panama
and Peru benefited from the quality of the public services
our concession companies provided in the sanitation and
transport sectors.
In order to handle these responsibilities, we are now
made up of almost 160,000 Members in 27 countries:
about 111,000 Brazilians, 32,000 citizens of other Latin
American countries, 14,000 Africans and 1,700 Members
from Asia, the USA and Europe. On average, every month in
2011 we hired 3,000 new Members and, that year, we also
took onboard 1,500 young partners and 2,000 interns – a
growth rate that few business organizations in the world
could match.
ODEBRECHT 2012
“In 2011, we invested USD 5.86 billion
and undertook a commitment to invest
USD 25.5 billion in the next three years.”
Maintaining this accelerated and diversified growth requires
three basic conditions to which we pay special attention:
grooming and integrating people into the organization;
operational efficiency, which involves increasing innovation
and productivity; and confidence in our brand.
Educating knowledgeable people, honing their expertise
and integrating them into our teams is a challenge that
matches the dynamism of our businesses. The basis for
our Members’ growth and development is education for
and through work, particularly through the disciplined
application of planned delegation by Educational Leaders
who are committed to our Culture and the challenges that
are also opportunities for their team members to achieve
personal and professional fulfillment.
By combining the forces of the organization’s people
and companies to energize knowledge, create and seize
opportunities and optimize our performance, we are
carrying out our strategy for generating more and more
tangible and intangible results. Today, our Knowledge
Communities – groups of experts from different Odebrecht
businesses – we are putting the technical and market
knowledge that are essential to our operations at the
disposal of everyone in the Group. At the same time, our
companies are working together in a coordinated fashion to
capture synergies. One example is the recent joint venture
between PDVSA and Odebrecht Óleo e Gás (Oil & Gas) in
Venezuela to explore mature oil fields in that country,
formed with the support of Odebrecht Venezuela. In 2011,
8% of our earnings resulted from ventures generated
by synergies between our businesses, and 52% of our
investments were in initiatives involving two or more of
our companies.
In 2011, we invested USD 5.86 billion and undertook a
commitment to invest USD 25.5 billion in the next three
years. However, we also continued making disciplined
efforts to reduce costs, manage risks and prioritize
liquidity, so we ended the year with a consolidated cash
balance of USD 7.1 million.
Effectiveness, efficiency and financial health are vital to
winning the trust of Clients, Partners and Communities,
but they are not enough. It also takes a commitment to
sustainability in our operations, in all its aspects: economic,
social and environmental. The positive impact of our work
on the lives of the communities and nations where we are
present must be a decisive factor when selecting projects,
investments, products and services, and the adoption of
sustainable social/environmental practices in our day-today operations has become a non-negotiable requirement.
Based on this outlook, Odebrecht not only includes
professional education, environmental protection and social
inclusion programs in its operations but also invests in
projects that go even further to bolster civic spirit, foster
the education of children and youth, boost work and income
opportunities, preserve natural resources and promote
and value local cultures. In 2011, these social investments
totaled over USD 53 million for the benefit of 600,000
people in Brazil and 200,000 in other countries.
In view of the progress we have made in our commitment to
sustainable development, our Clients, Partners, Investors,
Members and Shareholders have shown their trust with new
contracts, increased acquisition of our products, more credit
under the best terms, more partners and new and bigger
investments.
Last year, international credit-rating agencies gave Braskem
and CNO an investment grade rating. Other unmistakable
signs of the market’s confidence were the USD 3.83 billion
our companies raised in 2011 (USD 1.07 billion in the
international capital market), and the total value of our bond
coverage (USD 9.28 billion at the end of 2011), but it is also
worth noting the message sent by the young Brazilians who
ranked Odebrecht among the top 10 organizations where
they would prefer to start their professional lives.
Their trust fuels our optimism – an indispensable attribute
for any entrepreneur – and this vote of confidence inspires
us to go even further, offering new and bigger development
opportunities to even more people. We are grateful to all our
Members, Clients, Shareholders and Partners for their trust;
on that basis, we will stay on the path of those whose main
commitment is service.

Acreditar Program
All Odebrecht companies organize technical and
operational education programs.
In 2008, Odebrecht created the Acreditar
(“Believe”) Program to facilitate the priority hiring
of local workers in areas where skilled professionals
were in short supply. This collaboration with the
Brazilian Ministry
of Social Development allows men and women
to acquire job skills necessary to meet
the demands of the Group’s business operations,
while prioritizing candidates who participate in
Brazil’s Family Grant Program.
In 2011, the Group’s main programs reported a
total of 480,724 enrolments.
Strategic programs
Focused on improving the key skills of strategic
Members and broadening their multidisciplinary
expertise, these programs had 11,139 enrolments
in 2011.
