TELE NORTE LESTE ANNOUNCES
THREE NEW VICE-PRESIDENTS
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – June 27, 2001 – TELE NORTE LESTE
PARTICIPAÇÕES S.A. (NYSE: TNE), the holding company of providers of fixed line
public telecommunications services in the North, Northeastern and Eastern regions of
Brazil, announces that three new vice-presidents were formally appointed in the Board
of Directors Meeting that took place today. These new executives bring market
expertise that will add value to the Company during this period of rapid expansion,
which is focused on the fulfilment of expansion targets and the structuring of new
businesses, in order to prepare the Company for successful entry into new markets.
Alvaro A. C. dos Santos, 47 years old, was elected Vice-President of Finance
(CFO). Prior to this, he worked at Citibank for 25 years, most recently serving as
Senior Vice-President in New York, responsible for investment activities. In 1999, he
joined Safra, where he served as Vice-President of international banking activities until
2000. He holds a degree in Accounting and Business Administration from the
University Osvaldo Cruz in São Paulo, as well as a post-graduate degree in marketing
and finance from Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo.
Mauro Szwarcwald, 50 years old, was elected Vice-President of Corporate
Marketing. He joined Xerox do Brasil in 1975. In 2000, after holding several other
positions within Xerox, he was named Commercial Operations Executive Officer. He
holds a degree in Mathematics and a Master Degree in Systems Engineering from the
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, as well as a joint Master Degree in Mathematics
and Statistics from the University of Rochester in New York.
Mauro Multedo, 46 years old, was elected Vice-President of Consumer
Marketing. He served as Marketing Executive Officer of Ponto Frio and as National
Executive Officer of Operations of Coca-Cola. He was twice named Advertising
Executive of the Year, once while with Ponto Frio, and once while with Coca-Cola. He
holds a degree in marketing and advertisement from the Escola Superior de
Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM), and he attended the Executive Program for
International Management at Columbia University in New York.
