Príncipe, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the
book release.

APRESENTAÇÃO
“Era uma vez um principezinho que habitava um planeta pouco maior que ele,
e que precisava de um amigo”. O aviador diz que gostaria de ter começado o
livro dessa maneira, como nos contos de fadas.
Atendemos seu pedido 70 anos após o lançamento do livro, iniciando dessa
forma todas as oficinas do Projeto Criando Laços com as crianças e adolescentes
atendidos pelo Hospital Pequeno Príncipe.
O Hospital Pequeno Príncipe se sentiu honrado em apresentar – ou reapresentar –
o livro O Pequeno Príncipe a essas crianças e adolescentes, que foram convidados
a mergulhar nas suas páginas para conhecer mais o universo do Príncipe, seus
amigos, aventuras e valores, tão universais e essenciais ontem e sempre.
Foram esses valores e atitudes de cuidado que inspiraram o nome do Hospital
Pequeno Príncipe, batizado pela amada voluntária Ety – artista, mulher, cidadã
e minha mãe –, que ajudou a transformar um hospital de comunidade no
maior hospital pediátrico do Brasil, fazendo da frase “tu te tornas eternamente
responsável por tudo aquilo que cativas” uma realidade de equidade e respeito
aos meninos e meninas atendidos pelo hospital.
O projeto foi dividido em duas etapas: “Os Planetas e os Valores” e “Os
Segredos dos Bichos do Pequeno Príncipe”, inspiradas nos temas propostos
pela Succession Saint-Exupéry-d’Agay para as comemorações dos 70 anos do
lançamento do livro O Pequeno Príncipe. Cada etapa está registrada de uma
maneira diferente e única, assim como é a interpretação e o olhar de cada
criança ou adulto.
Para extrapolar os resultados para além dos muros da instituição, chamamos
o artista plástico André Mendes para registrar nas fachadas do prédio da
emergência do Hospital um grafite supercolorido, inspirado no olhar e nas
pinturas das crianças, e promover o encontro das crianças, adultos e toda
comunidade com a arte urbana e o imaginário infantil.
Este catálogo da exposição de pinturas é apenas uma parte do resultado do
Projeto Criando Laços. A outra parte, como nos ensinou a raposa, é invisível
aos olhos e precisa ser vista com o coração.
É este convite que faço agora: deixe seu coração ser conduzido pelas crianças
do Hospital Pequeno Príncipe que participaram das oficinas. Deixe que a voz,
a sensibilidade e a sabedoria dessas crianças possam guiá-lo por esta jornada,
inspirada na jornada do Pequeno Príncipe em busca de um amigo.

INTRODUCTION
“Once upon a time there was a prince who lived on a planet, a little bigger than him,
and who needed a friend.” The aviator says that he would like to have started the
book in this way, as in fairy tales.
We make good his request, 70 years after the book’s release, thus initiating all the
workshops of the Project Creating Bonds with children and adolescents treated at the
Hospital Pequeno Príncipe.
It was an honor for the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe to introduce - or reintroduce - the
book ‘The Little Prince’ to these children and adolescents, who were invited to dive
into its pages to learn more about the universe of the Prince, his friends, adventures
and values as universal and essential as yesterday and always.
It was these values and attitudes of care that inspired the name of the Hospital
Pequeno Príncipe baptized by the beloved voluntary Ety - artist, woman, citizen and
my mother - who helped transform a community hospital into the largest pediatric
hospital in Brazil, making the phrase “you become responsible forever for what you
have tamed” a reality of equality and respect for boys and girls treated by the hospital.
The project was divided into two stages - “The Planets and Values” and “The Secrets
of the animals of the Little Prince”, inspired by the themes proposed by the Succession
Saint-Exupéry-d’Agay for the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the launch of
the book The Little Prince. Recording each step in a different and unique way, as is
the interpretation and the viewpoint of each child or adult.
To project the results beyond the walls of the institution, we called upon the visual
artist André Mendes to register on the facades of the hospital emergency building,
one super-colorful graffiti, inspired by the viewpoints and paintings of the children,
and to promote the meeting of children, adults and the entire community with urban
art and childhood imagination.
This catalogue of the exhibition of paintings is only one part of the results of the
Project Creating Bonds. The other part, as the fox taught us is, ‘the essential is
invisible to the eye, one can only see clearly with the heart.’
This is the invitation I now make: let the children of the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe
who participated in the workshops drive your heart. Let the voice, sensibility and
wisdom of these children guide you through this journey, inspired by the journey of
the Little Prince in search of a friend.

Eis o nosso segredo...
Saint-Exupéry, ao dedicar o livro O Pequeno Príncipe a um adulto, pede desculpas às crianças e
justifica: ele é o melhor amigo que possuo no mundo. Então, resolve a questão dedicando o livro
à criança que essa pessoa grande já foi um dia, completando com uma sábia observação: todo
adulto foi criança um dia, pena que nem todos se lembrem disso.
Saint-Exupéry, dedicating the book The Little Prince to an adult, apologizes to children and justifies it,
he is the best friend I have in the world. So, he solves the matter by dedicating the book to the child that
this great person was once, ending with a wise observation: Every adult was once a child, a pity that not
everybody remembers that.
– Tia, o que eu escrevo aqui?
– O que você quiser. Pode começar contando de qual parte da história você gostou mais.
Luciano ficou quieto por um tempo. Parecia pensativo quando disse:
– Às vezes, adulto não entende o que criança fala.
– E se você tentar explicar?
– Nem sempre a gente sabe explicar.
– E se você desenhar, Lu?
– Boa ideia, tia.
“Miss, what should I write here?”
“Whatever you want. You can start by telling which part of the story you liked best.”
Luciano was quiet for a while, he looked thoughtful, then said:
“Sometimes, adults don’t understand what the child is saying.”
“And what if you try to explain?”
“We can’t always explain.”
“And what if you draw, Lu?”
“Good idea, Miss.”
E como uma ideia puxa a outra, tivemos a ideia de fazer uma exposição e um catálogo diferentes.
E eis aqui nosso segredo: foi necessário usar dois pequenos, porém simbólicos, truques. Observe
a altura das obras. Viu? Cada sequência, uma mais alta, outra mais baixa, conta uma história
diferente. Uma história é contada às crianças, outra aos adultos. E em um momento muito
especial, as duas histórias se encontram.
Assim também é este catálogo: duas capas, duas histórias e um único final. Acreditamos que,
dessa forma, tanto as crianças como os adultos poderão nos acompanhar nessa viagem.
E durante a viagem, com desenhos, fotos, pinturas e textos, respondemos, de maneira poética,
lúdica e verdadeira ao questionamento proposto pela Succession Saint-Exupéry-d’Agay. Serão
os valores do Pequeno Príncipe valores universais até hoje?

Here is our secret...
And as one idea led to another, we had the idea of doing a different exhibition and catalogue. And here is
our secret... It was necessary to use two small but symbolic tricks. Look at the words above. Can you see?
Each sequence, one higher, another lower, tells a different story. Telling one story to children, another to
adults. And in a very special moment, the two stories merge.
So is this catalogue, two covers, two stories and one only ending? We believe it to be this way, both
children and adults may accompany us on this journey.
It is during the journey, with drawings, photos, paintings and texts, we answer in a poetic, playful and
true way the question posed by the Succession Saint-Exupéry-d’Agay. Are the values of the Little Prince,
universal values today?

Mas, infelizmente, não sei ver carneiro através de caixa.
Sou um pouco como as pessoas grandes.
Acho que envelheci.
Unfortunately, I can’t see a lamb through a box.
I am a bit like big people.
I think I have aged.
– Como o príncipe fez para enxergar o carneiro olhando pelos buraquinhos da caixa que o
aviador desenhou?
– Ah, Vitor, acho que ele imaginou.
– Tia, não é que a imaginação é mais forte que a inteligência?
“How did the prince see the lamb looking through the holes in the box the aviator drew?”
“Ah, Vitor, I think he imagined it.”
“Miss, is it true that imagination is stronger than intelligence?”
Enquanto desenhavam e pintavam as telas, as crianças e adolescentes faziam perguntas e
recontavam a história do livro com suas próprias palavras, relacionando acontecimentos e
despertando desejos, como o de voar com os pássaros para ver o Hospital lá de cima.
Ouvi frases soltas ao acaso, fragmentos de conversas ou histórias repletas de detalhes contadas
por essas crianças, adolescentes e seus acompanhantes, histórias de amizade, superação e
cooperação. Valores presentes na obra e, ao mesmo tempo, tão atuais, mesmo após 70 anos.
De repente, por receio de esquecer, me vi tomando nota, rabiscando frases, observações, histórias
inteiras que aconteceram durante as oficinas. Mais do que uma exposição de pinturas inspiradas
pelo livro O Pequeno Príncipe, gostaríamos de compartilhar também um pouco da magia e da
atmosfera em que essas oficinas e a confecção das obras nos proporcionaram.

As they sketched and painted the canvases, the children and adolescents were asking questions and
retelling the story of the book in their own words, relating events and awakening desires, like flying with
the birds to see the hospital from up in the sky.
I heard loose sentences at random, fragments of conversations or full details of stories told by these
children, adolescents and their companions, stories of friendship, resilience and cooperation. Values
present in the work and at the same time as current now, even after 70 years.
On the spur of the moment, for fear of forgetting, I found myself taking notes, scribbling sentences,
observations, whole stories that happened during the workshops. More than an exhibition of paintings
inspired by the book The Little Prince, we would also like to share some of the magic and atmosphere
present in those workshops.

Só se vê bem com o coração.

We can only see well with the heart.
What is essential is invisible to the eye.
Crianças são curiosas, gostam de desvendar segredos. Gostam ainda mais de ouvir, contar e
recontar as histórias. Ao apresentar o livro O Pequeno Príncipe a elas, na primeira etapa do
Projeto Criando Laços, lançamos o desafio: vamos juntos imaginar os segredos dos bichos do
livro O Pequeno Príncipe? Todas, sem exceção, disseram SIM.
Children are curious, they like to unravel secrets. They enjoy even more, listening, telling and retelling
stories. In presenting the book The Little Prince to them, in the first stage of the Project Creating Bonds,
we launched the challenge, shall we together imagine the secrets of the animals in the book The Little
Prince? All, without exception, said YES.
Inspirados no segredo da raposa que diz que “só se vê bem com o coração, pois o essencial é
invisível aos olhos”, estimulamos as crianças a soltar a imaginação e refizemos a jornada do
Principezinho desde que ele deixou seu planeta, destacando os animais que ele encontrou pelo
caminho.
Inspired by the secret of the fox who says “the essential is invisible to the eye, one can only see clearly
with the heart”, we encouraged the children to unleash their imagination, and retraced the journey of the
Little Prince since he left his planet, highlighting the animals he met along the way.
Ao mesmo tempo em que as crianças desenhavam, ideias iam surgindo, e os segredos que cada
desenho trazia eram, então, revelados por elas. Foram as palavras e observações dessas crianças
e adolescentes que forneceram o fio condutor dessa nova história, contada pelas crianças do
Hospital Pequeno Príncipe às crianças do mundo todo.
Diferentes vozes, de diferentes culturas, cidades, idades, cor e credo se misturam e se fundem,
dando origem a uma singela e verdadeira viagem. Você pode dar uma espiadinha do outro lado,
mas antes tem que prometer que vai se esforçar para ver com seu coração.
While the children were drawing, ideas were emerging, revealing the secrets that each drawing brought.
It was the words and observations of these children and adolescents that provided the thread for this new
story, told by the children of the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe to children worldwide.
Different voices, different cultures, cities, age, color and creed mingle and merge, yielding a simple and
real journey. You can take a peek at the other side, but before you do, one has to promise to make an
effort to see with your heart.

As oficinas do Projeto Criando Laços foram realizadas no Hospital Pequeno Príncipe, em Curitiba,
com as crianças e adolescentes atendidos pela instituição. Algumas oficinas foram realizadas no
Setor de Educação e Cultura, onde vários grupos de crianças se reuniram para ouvir a história do
Príncipe e depois pintar a parte ou o personagem de que mais gostaram do livro.
The workshops of the Project Creating Bonds took place in the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe, in Curitiba,
with children and adolescents treated by the institution. The Department of Education and Culture held
several workshops, where several groups of children gathered to hear the story of the Prince and then
paint the part or the character they liked in the book.
O setor de Educação e Cultura do Hospital Pequeno Príncipe é um espaço muito especial, onde o
aprendizado, brincadeiras, educação formal e inclusão cultural acontecem diariamente de uma
maneira inovadora. As ações de educação e cultura foram implantadas no Hospital Pequeno
Príncipe em 1987, como um programa continuado. Devido ao sucesso e grande aceitação das
crianças, acompanhantes e rede pública de educação, no ano de 2000 foram formalizadas e
sistematizadas. E a partir daí a atuação do setor tem se ampliado ano a ano.
The Department of Education and Culture of the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe is a very special place
where learning, playing, formal education and cultural inclusion happen daily in an innovative way.
The Hospital Pequeno Príncipe implemented the actions of education and cultural inclusion in 1987
as a continued program. Due to the success and wide acceptance of the children, caregivers and public
education network, the formalization and structure of the program was set in 2000. From there, the
performance of the department has increased year by year.
O setor realiza acompanhamento educacional formal para pacientes em idade escolar, seminários
livres, as mais variadas oficinas de arte e apresentações artísticas, sessões de leitura individuais
e coletivas, empréstimos de livros, pesquisas de assuntos de interesse de pacientes e familiares, e
práticas de jogos de todo o mundo.
100 oficinas de artes, pinturas, colagens, gravuras, música, esculturas, fotografia, cinema e
culinária.
250 apresentações de grupos musicais, teatro, coral e contação de histórias.
13 mil crianças, familiares e colaboradores foram beneficiados.
20 produtos culturais resultantes – peças de teatro, documentário em DVD, shows e CD de
músicas, livros infantis, exposição de artes etc.

The department conducts formal educational support for school-age children, free seminars, various art
workshops and artistic performances, individual and group reading sessions, book loans, researches of
topics of interest to patients and families and game-playing from all over the world.
100 workshops of arts, painting, collage, printing, music, sculpture, photography, film and cooking.
250 performances of musical groups, theatre, choir and storytelling.
13,000 children, families and employees benefited.
20 resulting cultural products - plays, DVD documentary, shows and music CDs, children’s books, art
exhibition, etc.

Quer saber como costuma ser uma oficina do Projeto Criando Laços no Hospital Pequeno Príncipe?
Do you want to know what a workshop of the Project Creating Bonds is like at the Hospital Pequeno
Príncipe?
Colaboradores do Setor de Educação e Cultura passam pelos quartos do Hospital, convidando
as crianças e os adolescentes que estão internados e que podem sair dos seus leitos para as
atividades que serão realizadas em seguida na sala do 6º andar.
Enquanto isso, no 6º andar, arrumamos a sala para receber essas crianças. Em uma mesa grande,
no centro da sala, colocamos as telas, pincéis de vários tamanhos e formatos, tintas e lápis. Aos
poucos, as crianças e seus acompanhantes vão chegando.
Algumas crianças necessitam de um lugar especial para ligar o aparelho de monitoramento de sinais
vitais, outras precisam de espaço para cadeira de rodas, a maioria está com acesso endovenoso
na mão ou no braço para ministrar medicamentos e soro, algumas chegam empurrando o suporte
de soro. Mas nada disso parece ser um empecilho para elas.
As crianças, ao redor da mesa já arrumada, ouvem com atenção as instruções. Queremos que
cada uma escreva o nome, a idade e a cidade onde mora na aba da tela que está a sua frente. Isso
é muito importante para conseguirmos identificar depois quem fez cada pintura.
Lógico que isso é um pedido das pessoas grandes, que se preocupam com números. Para as
crianças, não tem importância. Elas só querem começar logo a pintura. Mas, como disse SaintExupéry, é bom ter paciência com as pessoas grandes e não lhes querer mal por causa disso.

Workers of the Department of Education and Culture visit the rooms of the hospital, inviting hospitalized
children and adolescents who can leave their beds for the activities that will happen next, to attend on
the room on the 6th floor.
Meanwhile, on the 6th floor, we prepare the room to receive these children. In a large table in the center
of the room, we place the canvases, brushes of various sizes and shapes, paints and pencils. Gradually,
children and their escorts begin to arrive.
Some children need a special place to connect the medical equipment monitoring vital signs, others need
space for a wheelchair, most are with an intravenous drip in their hand or arm to administer medications
and solutions, some children even push their IV pole. Yet, none of this seems to be a hindrance to them.
The children, around the already set table, listen carefully to the instructions. We want each one to write
their name, age and city of residence on the edge of the canvas that is in front of them. This is very
important for us to later identify who made each painting.
Of course this is a request for big people, who care about numbers, for children, it doesn’t matter. They
just want to start painting. But as Saint-Exupéry said, it is good to have patience with big people and not
wish them harm because they lack it.

Após todas as explicações sobre o Projeto Criando Laços, os 70 anos do livro O Pequeno Príncipe,
o porquê do nome do Hospital ser o mesmo do livro, a exposição em Nova Iorque, a exposição
no Hospital, nome, foto e desenho no catálogo, uma mãozinha se ergue.
After all the explanations about the Creating Bonds project, the 70 years of the book The Little Prince,
the reason why the name of the hospital is the same as the book, the exhibition in New York, and the
exhibitions in the hospital, name photo and drawing in the catalogue, a little hand rises.
– E se eu não quiser deixar minha pintura para exposição? Posso levar comigo?
– Lógico que pode, a pintura é sua. Mas que tal emprestar a pintura pra gente e depois nós
devolvemos?
– E se eu também não quiser emprestar, pode?
– Pode. Mas olha que legal: sua pintura vai viajar para Nova Iorque, sua foto vai aparecer no
catálogo com seu nome em um livro como este.
Mostro o catálogo de outro projeto, achando que posso impressionar a criança.
Ela sorri, acho que estou conseguindo convencê-la.
– Não, tia, vou querer levar minha pintura agora.
“What if I don’t want to leave my painting for the exhibition? Can I take it with me?”
“Of course you can, the painting is yours. But what about lending us the painting and then we return
it?”
“What if I also don’t want to lend it, can I keep it?”
“You can. But look how cool, your painting will travel to New York, your photo will appear in the catalogue, with your name on a book like this.” I show the catalogue of the other project, thinking I might
impress the child.
She smiles, I think I’m managing to convince her.
“No, Miss, I want to take my painting now.”
Acho que pensei como uma pessoa grande, que dá importância a esse tipo de coisa. Nenhuma
oferta que eu fiz seduziu a criança. Ela só queria mesmo ficar com a pintura e pronto.
Os adultos da sala se olharam constrangidos e não tiveram outra saída a não ser concordar. Por
um segundo refleti sobre o que é realmente importante. Naquele momento, importante era contar
a história do Pequeno Príncipe.
Com o livro em mãos, começo a falar: “Era uma vez um principezinho que habitava um planeta
pouco maior que ele e que tinha necessidade de um amigo”.
Sigo contando a história e mostrando as aquarelas. As crianças começam a se agitar, movem as
mãos, remexem-se nas cadeiras. Percebo várias olhando para as telas brancas bem na sua frente.
Tinta e pincel esperando.
Paro de falar e, enfim, faço a tão esperada proposta:
– Vamos pintar?
Não preciso falar duas vezes. Isso sim é importante para elas.

I guess I thought as a big person, who gives importance to this kind of thing. I made no offer that enticed
the child. She just wanted to keep the painting and that was all.
The adults in the room looked at each other embarrassed and didn’t have any other choice but to agree.
For a second I thought about what is really important. At that time, it was important to tell the story of
the Little Prince.
With the book in hand, I start talking: “Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet
scarcely bigger than himself and who had need of a friend”.
I go on telling the story and showing the watercolors. The children begin to stir, move their hands, fidget
on their chairs, I notice several of them are looking at the white canvases right in front of them. Paint
and brush waiting.
I stop talking and, finally, make the long-awaited proposal:
Shall we paint?
I don’t have say it twice. This is important to them.
