The forecast is that more than 3,000 people will be helped by the project. The first phase of the project offers a free-of-charge qualifying course for infant teachers Gerdau AZA receives recognition in Chile The Adding Value to Scrap Project, operated by the Chilean steel mill Gerdau AZA, received recognition as the best social responsibility program by the Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham). The body highlights annually those companies which develop social projects with a differentiated impact on society. For the first time, Gerdau AZA competed for this award and won first place in the industrial category. The objective of the presented project is to encourage the recycling of scrap iron, the principal raw material for steel production. The incentive also offers technological support for 17,000 people who work directly in the collection and processing of scrap. The Gerdau Group is the second largest scrap recycler in the American Continent. Michael Grasty Cousiño, Chilean Amcham President, Hermann von Mühlenbrock, Gerdau AZA Director and Hernán Somerville, President of the Production and Commerce Confederation, were present at the award giving ceremony Gerdau promotes professional qualification project in São José dos Campos (in the state of Sâo Paulo) The Gerdau Group launched an unprecedented project for the training and qualification of solderers and welders, in São José dos Campos (in the state of São Paulo). Solder Town is a shared social responsibility program to meet the needs of specialized work forces of large investments taking place throughout the country in the petroleum and gas, steel, mining, paper and cellulose sectors. Andrea Boldrini Carlucci, Gerdau Group representative, signed the partnership agreement The qualification covers technical training in management, quality and environmental preservation. Solder Town is promoted by the Gerdau Group in partnership with Petrobras and White Martins, among other companies. Senai and the São José dos Campos Municipal Council (in the state of São Paulo) also support the program. Gallatin Steel modernizes environmental system Gallatin Steel, a joint venture between the Gerdau Group and Dofasco located in Kentucky (USA), has begun operating a new dust removal system. The equipment is capable of the highly efficient filtration of solid particles generated in steel production and represents an investment of US$15 million. As well as the new equipment, modifications were carried out of the ventilation system to further increase collection efficiency. Gerdau Pro-Library encourages reading in public schools in São Paulo Encouraging reading and the reduction of functional illiteracy are the challenges of the Gerdau ProLibrary project, supported by the Gerdau Institute. As well as making available both national and universal literary classics in public schools, the Gerdau Group is qualifying 25 workers to work among the public schools in the state of São Paulo. They will develop activities in the schools to stimulate students and teachers. One of the project's objectives is to increase reading among children Project using Gerdau steel delivers drinking water to four thousand people in the Northeast of Brazil The Gerdau Group is involved in one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the Northeast of Brazil: the Integration Canal. The project is a complex of pumping stations that will transfer water from the Castanhão Dam, in the Rio Jaguaribe valley (in the state of Ceará), to bolster supply to the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza (capital of the state of Ceará). The work, totaling 200 kilometers, is divided into three phases and, as a whole, will be using more than 5,000 tons of Gerdau steel in its structure. The Integration Canal uses Gerdau Cut and Folded Rebar The main product used in the enterprise is Cut and Folded GG 50 Rebar, which arrives at the site ready-to-use. This reduces costs and increases productivity. The material can be found in Gerdau's Cutting and Folding Center, in Maracanaú (in the state of Ceará). In February 2007, when the canal is completed, more than 4 million people will receive drinking water in their homes. As well as this, around 10,500 hectares of fertile and agriculturally favorable soil will be irrigated. The first part of the project, from the Castanhão Dam to Morada Nova, in the Baixo Jaguaribe area, has already been completed. Part two, up to Fortaleza and part three, with ducts up to the Port of Pecém, in the region of São Gonçalo do Amarante, are currently underway. The work is promoted by the Ceará Government and forms part of the actions of the State's Management and Integration of Hydro Resources Project. Gerdau teaches management practices at public schools in the state of Rio Grande do Sul The Gerdau Group is carrying out the 5S methodology application program in public schools in the town of Charqueadas (in the state of Rio Grande do Sul). Through this initiative, around 920 students between the ages of 10 and 14 will benefit. The projects objective is to create a quality environment in the schools, improving both the physical installations and the students' school performance. To make the project possible, kits were distributed including a CD and textbook introducing the 5S concepts. On the CD, students can follow, through an animated cartoon, the 5S methodology application by means of a competition. The aim is to implement the project in other locations close to Gerdau Group units in Brazil. The textbook will be distributed to more than 920 students in the schools of Charqueadas (in the state of Rio Grande to Sul)
