ITINERÁRIO I “Lendas e memórias de Santiago”
Palmela - Castelo de Palmela
O Castelo foi alvo de múltiplas intervenções arquitectónicas ao longo de séculos, destacando-se o período medieval
e o moderno (muralhas abaluartadas).
A ocupação islâmica, entre os sécs. VIII-XII, está confirmada pelas intervenções arqueológicas realizadas. Dos sécs. XV ao XIX, o Castelo
foi Sede da Ordem Militar de Santiago da Espada. Admitida em Portugal por D. Afonso Henriques, a Ordem tornou o ramo português
independente do castelhano no reinado de D. Dinis e, por ordem de D. João I, fixou-se o Convento Mestral e a Sede da Ordem neste
Castelo. Os cavaleiros de Santiago ficaram conhecidos, desde então, como “Freires de Palmela”.
A Ordem de Santiago tem como símbolo uma cruz em forma de espada, um dos elementos heráldicos do município.
ITINERARY I “Legends and memories of Santiago”
Palmela – The Castle of Palmela
The Castle was the target of multiple architectural interventions throughout the centuries, particularly during the medieval and
modern periods (fortified bulwark walls). These archaeological interventions confirm the Islamic occupation between the 8th
and the 12th centuries. From the 15th to the 19th centuries, the Castle was the Headquarters of the Military Order of Santiago
da Espada. Allowed in Portugal by D. Afonso Henriques, the Order made its Portuguese branch independent from the Castilian
during the reing of D. Dinis and, by order of D. João I, the Convent Mestral and the Headquarters of this Order were settle here in
this Castle. From that moment on, the knights of Santiago became known as the “Monks of Palmela”.
The Order of Santiago has a cross in the shape of a sword as its symbol, which is one of the heraldic elements of the municipality.
