São Paulo 2011 also at Rietveld Academie . Amsterdam 2009 Lines of argument: * the banana as an index of global periphery (nature as periphery) * penetration, indoctrination, domestication - the banana psychologised * slippery potential - the banana as a resource of primitivity * State, work, race and banana republics * exaltation of the good savage or the bananero hero – towards a tropical social realism ARCHIVO BANANA From early drawings of the New World to until very recently, the banana caused both laughter and uneasiness in the rational body. Conversely, it composed a tropical vocabulary that enabled strategies of cultural specificity and autonomy. The Archivo Banana is a collection of artefacts that perform this history of symbolic and actual power. video screen shots: top right: René Descartes presents newly arrived tropical fruits to one incredulous French messenger in The Netherlands, around 1630. bottom right: an allegorical encounter between an African king and the Brazilian modernist Tarsila do Amaral in her Paris studio, 1920’s. bottom left: video collage on a banana production line in Guatemala. Workshop with support of the residency program Impakt Foundation and Setup Utrecht 2012 in collaboration with Caetano Carvalho Appropriating the cave allegory as an environment filled with flickering images - unrealistic and faulty representations of the real and creating an immersive environment with projections, screens, objects and decor, we incorporated the ‘nature’ of animated GIFs in a performative and even ritualistic dimension in which conceptions of nature, culture, and technology are in play. Installation and workshop in progress . partial view UMBELINA’S CAVE My legs bite, I found our cave! There’s a gypsum fossil in there and an animated gif that has been looping for 7,000,000,000 years. Even though no carbon 14 determination was possible. Contrary to what people think, humans evolved in the steppe and its caves while the ape evolved in the forest. Every prophet in their own cave: Plato, Zarathustra, Umbelina Valeria, Mike Kelley… and us. Mankind developed its constructivist impetus in the cave. The cave is not only a classical philosophical trope but also the human cradle. It is there that we find the most ancient inscriptions. London 2010 also at Museo Reina Sofia . Madrid 2010 in collaboration with Greg Vamvakas, Andrew Vernede and Nicolas Nestoret The work consists of a series of formal translations of a historical text to narrative, music composition, scenic painting, video, printed material and performance. The classical grammar has had a central role in formulating ideas of enlightened revolutionary democracy in America between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The sublime Roman ruins were an ideal backdrop for the apparition of a historical leader with messianic vocation. The romantic rebel S.R. - Simon Rodriguez- tells the tale of The Oath of Monte Sacro, in which El Libertador enters the stage of world history. São Paulo 2010-2011 It concerns the formal invention of a dramatic space - monumental and recurrent - which is crucial for the officialoid representation of a ‘Spirit of State’ as opposed to ‘the body of the people’. The exhibits have the double function of works and props for a series of talks on site - above the Cultural Centre’s library. Silver plaque 3x5cm “[...] toying with elements of historical memory, Leandro creates a series of situations that seem to test the capacity of a political text to monumentalise speech. Preying on the official cellebrations of the Bicentennial of Latin America’s independence, this exhibition comes across as a critique of those very notions of identity and history that are being commemorated elsewhere.” . made in collaboration with the artisan Gemio Flores in Oruro, Bolivia JURAMENTO NO ARAXÁ SAGRADO, queria incendiar Roma mas o fósforo tava molhado CIVIC AND PUBLIC SCULPTURES (built or planned) Monument to Public Domain . c-print . variable size . 2012 CIVIC AND PUBLIC SCULPTURES (built or planned) Lectern on 24” sleek wheels all terrain PA system optional (after Wodiczko) . 210x85x75cm . 2010 in colaboration with Thales de Azevedo This series of built or planned sculptures work either as actual structures (built or planned) or images of found structures that have specific formal sculptural quality. ICA . London 2009 in collaboration with Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre The workshop is rooted in Chilean politics of the 1970s, and invites its participants to engage with the context through their sound qualitiy. In 1970, Salvador Allende was the first Marxist on the American continent to become an elected national leader, and before his socialist government was prematurely ended, Chile saw a flowering of the culture of street politics, including political speeches, chants, mural, radio, 16mm film. São Paulo in colaboration with Luvier Casali, Valeria Anzuate and Martin Barea Report on the War of Paraguay (1863-1870) following a group expedition from Ñeembucu to Cerro Corá in four weeks only, searching for residues of history. Thesis: the desire for one’s own sea motivates the war, following a historical flow towards East (Atlantic), as registered in folk tales and the old cartographies. And there is counter-flow towards West, conquest of the West (guarany land), which is terra nullius anyways.
