I Course on Electron Microscopy date: 26-28 May Introduction and objectives place: at Instituto nstituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge, IP (Av Padre Cruz, 1649-016, 016, Lisbon) Microscopy techniques are used both for diagnostic and research proposes. During the last decades new microscopic techniques have been developed. Among these we highlight confocal microscopy (1957) and more recently super-resolution super tion microscopy (e.g.: PALM, STORM). Nevertheless, none of these techniques accomplished the resolution achieved by electron microscopy (EM). For this reason EM is used in diagnostic (e.g. virus identification) and research to elucidate cellular processes. The first electron microscopy course held at INSA will be focused on scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) fundaments and applications. The participants will wil be introduced to S/TEM sample preparation and observation. It is given to the th participants the possibility of bringing and processing their own samples. At the end of the course, all participants will have acquired and / or updated their knowledge about different electron microscopy techniques and respective applications. Coordination: Programme Luísa Jordão, Paulo Pereira Day 1 09:00 | Opening pening and brief introduction to the course thematic. 09:15 | Microscopy observation of biomaterials.
