This paper presents the history of the Centro de Memória of the Universidade Estadual de
Campinas - UNICAMP. The main objective is to promote research about the west paulista
region. The Centro de Memória has documents dating from the XVIIIth century.

The present work comprises two main parts. The first part considers university archives withim
the context of archival science. It presents an historical background, their concept, mission,
function an objectives, as well as other aspects related to their performance. The report is based
exclusively on the author's study of the literature published on the subject. The second part refers
to the development of archives specifically in Brazil. It presents data on institutions of the Study
group on University Archives. The information was obtained from interviews, questionnaires
and site visits. In the final analysis the author calls for a closer integration of the university
archives within the information system of the university.
