Jorge Sampaio galardoado com o Prémio Nelson Mandela das Nações Unidas atribuído pela primeira vez
Jorge Sampaio é a personalidade masculina escolhida para receber o Prémio Nelson R. Mandela, que é
atribuído este ano pela primeira vez na história das Nações Unidas. Helena Ndume, da Namíbia, é a
laureada feminina.
Este Prémio honorífico visa reconhecer a contribuição excepcional de Jorge Sampaio e de Helen Ndume,
que têm dedicado as suas vidas e acção em prol da humanidade, pautando-se pelos objectivos e princípios
subjacentes às Nações Unidas, na esteira da notável figura de Nelson Mandela, nomeadamente do seu
legado em matéria de reconciliação, transição política e transformação social.
O Prémio Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela foi criado pela Resolução 68/275 das Nações Unidas de 6 de Junho de
2014, cujo Regulamento foi aprovado pela mesma Assembleia-Geral (Resolução 69/269 de 2 de Abril de
2015) e será atribuído de cinco em cinco anos, como uma homenagem a duas personalidades – uma
mulher e um homem- provenientes de áreas geográfica diferentes, em reconhecimento do seu contributo
excepcional.
Os laureados são seleccionados por um Comité das Nações Unidas, composto por representantes de seis
Estados Membros, oriundos dos cinco grupos regionais e um representante de África do Sul e presidido
pelo Presidente da Assembleia-Geral.
A cerimónia de entrega do Galardão decorrerá no próximo dia 24 de Julho na sede das Nações Unidas em
Nova Iorque por ocasião das comemorações anuais do Dia Internacional Nelson Mandela.
Ao tomar conhecimento da notícia, o Dr. Jorge Sampaio disse: “Sinto-me muito honrado e feliz também.
Quero agradecer a todos os que, pelo mundo fora, apoiaram a minha nomeação. É, sem dúvida, um
enorme estímulo e uma grande responsabilidade”.

PRESS RELEASE
JORGE SAMPAIO is awarded with the first Nelson R. Mandlea UN Prize
Jorge Sampaio is announced today as the male laureate for the Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize that is
awarded this year for the very first time in the United Nations’ history. The female Laureate is Helena
Ndume from Namibia.
This Honorary Award is a tribute to the outstanding achievements and contributions of Jorge Sampaio and
Helen Ndume They both have dedicated their lives to the service of humanity, by promoting the purposes
and principals of the United Nations while honouring and paying homage to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s
extraordinary life and legacy of reconciliation, political transition and social transformation.
The Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize was originally established by General Assembly resolution 68/275 of 6
June 2014 and its Statute was approved by General Assembly resolution 69/269 of 2 April 2015. This
Honorary award will be presented once every five years as a tribute to the outstanding achievements and
contributions of two individuals - one female and one male – selected from different geographic regions.
Jorge Sampaio and Helena Ndume selected by a UN Committee made up of seven members who are: the
President of the General Assembly (Chair); a representative of the Permanent Mission of South Africa to
the United Nations; and five representatives of Member States of the United Nations, selected from each
of the five regional groups.
The award ceremony will take place on 24 July at UN Headquarters in New York during the
commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day.
President Sampaio said: “I feel very honored and happy. I should like to thank to all people around the
world who have supported my nomination. It’s a tremendous encouragement and a great responsibility”
