RULES AND REGULATION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM

The President of Fundação Clóvis Salgado - FCS and JA.CA – Center of Art and
Technology (in this document represented by VFBH Produções Ltda. and its Legal
representative established on the Cultural Cooperation number 209/2013 signed by both
parties) turn public the following selection process for participating in one of the residency
cycles as follow:
The Residency Program Coordination Committee will be formed by one representative
of Fundação Clóvis Salgado and another from JA.CA – Center of Art and Technology.
1. OBJECTIVE
1.1.
The present document’s objective is to establish the rules and regulations for
the selection process of projects to be developed during the three residency
cycles, to be held over the year 2014 in the Center for Contemporary Art and
Photography/FCS in downtown Belo Horizonte .
1.2.
For each of the three cycles, 03 (three) original artistic projects and one (01)
research project will be selected. Projects can be proposed by Brazilian or
international artists. In total, 09 artistic projects and 03 research proposals
will be selected.
1.2.1 - Artistic Projects will be considered those which imply the application
and/or experimentation with contemporary artistic mediums for the
development of the art pieces, interventions, technical researches, process
related to the artistic trajectory, works in the frontier of art and other
disciplines, among others.
1.2.2 - Research proposals will be considered those which imply theoretical,
critical or curatorial questions, and have as their objective the development
of projects related with artistic reflections and the interface with other
disciplines, and should result in articles, essays, texts, interviews, analysis
and dialogues between pieces, among others.
1.3.
Each residency cycle will last for 60 days during the following periods: April
15th to June 15th 2014; July 15th to September 15th 2014 and September 22nd
to November 22nd 2014.
2. THE CANDIDATES
2.1.
Artists and researchers from any nationality can apply as International
Candidate. Brazilians artists and researchers from any region of Brazil
can apply as Brazilian Candidate.
2.2.
The candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
2.3.
The members (as well as interns) of the Coordination Committee and the
Selection Committee, employees of FundaçãoClóvis Salgado - FCS and of
JA.CA cannot apply for the selection process, as well as their first degree
relatives.
3. THE APPLICATION:
3.1.
The candidates can apply during the following period:
January 7nd to February 28th 2014.
3.2.
The application should be sent to the e-mail: [email protected] in
a PDF document containing the following info listed bellow:
3.2.1. Personal information (full name, date and place of birth, complete address,
link to website and e-mail);
3.2.2. Brief letter of intent (limited to one page) stating why this residency will be
important for the development of your work;
3.2.3. Brief description of the project to be developed during the residency (limited
to two pages);
3.2.4. short form CV (limited to one page);
3.2.5. Portfolio (maximum of 10 images);
3.2.6. Scan of the application form, completed and signed by the candidate.
3.3.
Incomplete applications will not be accepted;
3.4.
The Residency Program Coordination Committee will not be responsible for
corrupted files, please check your PDF file before submitting.
4. THE SELECTION PROCESS
4.1.
Candidates who send incomplete application documents will be excluded
from the selection process;
4.2.
Candidates who send applications past the deadline will also be excluded
from the selection process;
4.3.
The Selection Committee will be comprised by: 01 of JA.CA’s coordinators,
01 professional from FCS and 03 guests who are active representatives of
the local art community (to be indicated by the FCS’ presidency).
4.4.
The selection process will take in consideration the following criteria:
originality and coherence of the proposal; artistic trajectory of the candidate;
interaction with the urban territory and local community.
5. THE RESULTS
5.1.
The name of the selected artists and researchers will be announced in the
Diário Oficial of Minas Gerais and on the FCS:www.fcs.mg.gov.bron the
following date: March 18th , 2014.
6. COMPLAINTS
6.1. The list of selected proposals will be posted on the website of FCS
www.fcs.mg.gov.br, in the Official Gazette of the State of Minas Gerais and
www.jacarte.org;
6.2. Candidates not selected will have a limit of two (2) working days after the
publication of the list of selected to file an official complaint to the Selection
Committee;
6.3.
Complaints
should
be
sent
to
the
following
e-mail
address:
[email protected]. The committee will not accept documents that
were not sent in the original application;
6.4. The complaints will be evaluated by the Selection Committee within five (5)
working days.
7. FUNDING AWARDED
7.1.
The Residency program will award the selected artists and researchers the
following:
7.1.1. The Brazilian artists and researchers will receive a stipend of
R$2.600,00 (two thousand and six hundreds Brazilian Reais) payable in
two installments. All taxes and fees shall be paid by the artist or
researcher.
7.1.2. The International artists and researchers will receive the total amount of
R$2,600.00(two thousand and six hundreds Brazilian Reais) converted
to food tickets and transportation to be used during their participation in
the residence. All taxes and fees shall be paid by the artist or researcher.
7.1.3. Brazilian and International artists could use the amount of up to
R$4,000.00 (Four thousand Brazilian Reais) for the development of their
projects, used in consumables and services to be hired directly by the
project and paid through the presentation of official invoices. All
expenses must be approved by the Coordination Committee.
7.1.4. Payments of fellowships and other expenses shall be made directly by
the Program Coordination company VFBH Productions, through
approved State Funding for the Culture Project.
7.1.5. The Program will cover the transportation costs of the artists and
researchers (Brazilian and International) who are not residents of Belo
Horizonte. The Coordination Committee, observing the best price for the
acquisition, will buy a two-way airplane ticket from the home city of the
artist/researcher to Belo Horizonte. The selected artist/researcher will
stay in an individual room, in a shared apartment, in the city of Belo
Horizonte.
7.1.6. The artists and researchers who reside in Belo Horizonte prior to the
term of the residency will not be granted transportation or
accommodation, all living and displacement costs are the responsibility
of the artist.
7.1.7. All artists and researchers will have access to the studios located on the
third floor of the Center for Contemporary Art and Photography building,
and are required to participatein all of the program’s events – curatorial
visits, talks, debates and workshops.
7.1.8. Artists and researchers will also participate in a closing event to be
performed at the end of each cycle of residence, as well as have their
projects documented in a printed or electronic annual publication.
8. PARTICIPANTS RESPONSABILITIES
8.1.
Credits for any project realized while in residency:
8.1.1. JA.CA and Fundação Clóvis Salgado should be credited in all
documentation produced during residency, as well as afterwards, whenever
the project is exhibited or announced.
8.1.2. JA.CA, Fundação Clóvis Salgado and its sponsors ‘Logos’ should appear
on the credits of all produced pieces.
8.2.
The artists commit to communicate to JA.CA and FCS on the future
exhibitions and publications in which the produced project appears, even after
the completion of the residency.
8.3.
All participants should send to the Program’s coordination a report/memorial
of the residency’s production – process and results – after the end of the
residency. This report should be sent together with selected documentation
– visual, text etc - of the produced projects.
8.4.
All participants authorize, automatically, the institutional (non-commercial)
use of his or her image and/or image of the work developed in residency.
Rights in all media –texts, websites, video, photo etc… - for usage will be
reserved to JACA, FCS and its sponsors.
8.5.
Active participation in the Residency Program:
8.5.1. All participants must make use of their studio a minimum of 20 hours per
week. Absences should be communicated with antecedence and approved
by the Center’s administration. Absences cannot exceed 10 days
throughout the total period of the residency.
8.5.2. Artists must participate in all Program’s events, which includes (but not
limited to): round-tables, studio visits and lectures, etc. If the artist is unable
to do so, the Program’s administration must be notified in advance.
8.5.3. In the case of necessary departure and subsequent termination of the
residency, the artist must inform the Residency Program’s administration
two weeks in advance, and understand that any remained financial stipend
will no longer be granted.
8.6.
Travel and Visa:
8.6.1. The Coordination Committee will not be responsible for health of the
participants. International and Brazilian artists and researchers should
acquire insurance and medical coverage valid in Brazil (and the state of
Minas Gerais) for the entirety of the residency period and during travel.
8.6.2. International artists and researchers are responsible for obtaining a
Brazilian visa, as well as all necessary documentation for travel to Brazil.
The Program’s administration will offer assistance with this process. The
purchase of the airline ticket is subsequent to the presentation of the
participant’s visa and any other document required for the trip.
8.7.
Studio and Living area:
8.7.1. The Center for Contemporary Art and Photography’s working hours should
be respected and followed throughout the residency:
MONDAY from 9am to 6pm; TUESDAY to SATURDAY from 9am to 9pm;
and SUNDAY from 4pm to 9pm. For special events, the Program’s
Coordination Committee will schedule exceptional hours.
8.7.2. The participant residents are not allowed and have no rights of occupying
the area after the stipulated period, and should respect the Brazilian Civil
Code.
8.7.3. Objects may not be stored in the studio common area.
8.7.4. The Studio has allocated workspaces and tables for individual artists; the
working area should be left tidy when the artist is not at work. The
Program’s Coordination has no responsibility for objects left in the studio.
8.7.5. All studio visitors should register at, and be approved by the Program’s
office.
8.7.6. All participants are responsible for the actions of their companion, or any
other invited visitor.
8.7.7. At the beginning of the residency, all participants should sign an
inventory/condition report of all objects and furniture available at the
studio/apartment. In the case of any discrepancy at the end of the
residency, the value of damaged or lost objects will be charged to the artist
or researcher.
8.7.8. The Art Center’s insurance does not cover any personal effects or works of
the artist. The resident is responsible for all his belongings.
8.7.9. The Centre for Contemporary Art and Photography has an electrical load
limit 6 KVA's distributed in all of its dependencies. If the resident needs to
use extra electronic equipment such as projectors, sound systems and
lighting, it will be necessary to require prior authorization with the Program’s
Coordination.
8.7.10. In case of developing works that are overweight or hanging pieces or
equipment from the ceiling, prior consultation with coordination is required.
8.7.11. Any physical intervention in the property, such as holes or paintings on
the walls, ceiling, floor, doors and windows must be approved by the
coordination.
9. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
9.1.
Admission to the Residency Program is contingent on the acceptance and
signature of the contract, in which the participant complies to returning the
studio and room in the same conditions as it was received at the stipulated
date.
9.2.
Violation of any of the rules put forward in this document, or any behavior
which disrupts the residency or its participants will subject the artist to
penalties decided by the Center’s Administration, which may include
compulsory compensation for damaged property or goods, and expulsion
from the residency.
9.3.
Omissions herein shall be resolved by the Coordination Committee or by
legislation that is applicable to each case.
9.4.
By submitting the signed application form, the artist/researcher automatically
accepts these rules and regulations.
