Vinhos do Algarve
Há numerosas referências relativas à tradição e importância da vinha
no Algarve. Pensa-se que foram vários os povos que introduziram a
produção de vinho na região: Fenícios, Gregos e os Celtas. Existem ainda referências importantes sobre o vinho, como as descritas no “Foral
de Tavira” (1266) por D. Afonso III, ou no “Foral de Porches” (1286)
por D. Dinis. Os “Vinhos do Algarve” são produzidos neste precioso
“terroir”, através da vinificação das suas mais tradicionais castas: Síria,
Moscatel, Arinto, Negra-Mole, Trincadeira, Aragonês ou Castelão, obtendo-se néctares elegantes, equilibrados e fáceis de beber.
A produção de vinhos brancos e rosados está numa fase de grande
expansão, sendo estes praticamente consumidos durante o Verão em
linha com o fluxo turístico da região. O vinho constitui ainda, em termos
de oferta turística, um produto complementar com forte poder de atração, aliando a história à cultura e à gastronomia regional, potenciando
também o turismo em espaço rural e o turismo de natureza. Queremos
desta forma incluir os “Vinhos do Algarve” na rota dos que procuram a
região, proporcionando-lhes experiências inesquecíveis.
A Região Vitivinícola do Algarve
A Região Demarcada do Algarve data de 1980, está localizada no extremo Sul de Portugal e coincide geograficamente com o distrito de Faro.
Toda a sua área corresponde à zona produtora de Vinho Regional Algarve e vinho Licoroso de Indicação Geográfica “Algarve”. Na zona litoral,
marginando a costa Atlântica/Mediterrânea, localizam-se as quatro regiões produtoras de vinhos de “Denominação de Origem”: DOP Lagos,
DOP Lagoa, DOP Portimão e DOP Tavira. A região pretende afirmar-se,
não pela quantidade, mas pela qualidade e especificidade das suas produções que, aliando a sua localização única, de influência Mediterrânea
e Atlântica, confere características especiais aos vinhos aqui produzidos,
determinadas essencialmente pelo “terroir” e competência do vitivinicultor
e enólogo, os quais se poderiam classificar de “vinhos de autor”. A região
vitivinícola do Algarve encontra-se numa fase de crescente notoriedade,
despertando o interesse de críticos e peritos nacionais e internacionais.
Quanto à qualidade dos “Vinhos do Algarve”, esta também tem vindo
a ser reconhecida de onde se salientam as várias distinções obtidas em
prestigiados concursos nacionais e internacionais.

Algarve Wines
There are numerous accounts of the tradition and importance of
wine-making in the Algarve. Several different peoples are said to have
brought this art to the region: Phoenicians, Greeks and Celts. There are
also detailed historical references to wine, in such documents as the
“Foral de Tavira” (1266), issued by Portugal’s then king, Dom Afonso III,
and the “Foral de Porches” (1286) of his successor, Dom Dinis.
The Algarve Wines are produced in this precious terroir by working with
its most traditional grape varieties: Síria, Moscatel, Arinto, Negra-Mole,
Trincadeira, Aragonês and Castelão, from which are obtained elegant,
balanced, easy-drinking wines.
Production of white and rosé wine in the region is currently expanding
fast, with most of it consumed in summer, when the influx of tourists is at
its height. In terms of tourism, wine complements well what the region
has to offer, thanks to its links with its history, culture and food; it also
makes for a good fit with rural accommodation and nature tourism. That
is why we want to put the Algarve Wines on the map for visitors to the
region, so as to give them access to unforgettable experiences.
The Algarve Wine-Making Region
Dating back to 1980, the demarcated Algarve wine region is located at
the southernmost end of Portugal and coincides geographically with the
administrative district of Faro. Across its whole area, regional Algarve
wine and liqueur wine with the Algarve geographical label are produced.
Within this larger area, dotted along the length of the coast, are four
smaller “Denominação de Origem” wine-producing regions: DOP Lagos,
DOP Lagoa, DOP Portimão and DOP Tavira. The Algarve aims to stake its
claim, not through quantity, but through the quality and uniqueness of its output. Its singular location, with both Mediterranean and Atlantic influences,
confers special characteristics on its wines that are essentially determined by
the terroir and by the skills of the grape grower and oenologist, with many
justly classed as auteur wines.
The Algarve wine region is raising its profile, with Portuguese and international critics and experts showing ever more interest in its output. The
quality of the Algarve Wines is gaining increasing recognition, with their
having won prizes in a number of prestigious national and international
competitions of late.

Gil Eanes, natural de Lagos, foi o primeiro navegador português a dobrar
o Cabo Bojador. Na sua cidade-natal sugerimos um passeio pelo centro
histórico com uma visita à Igreja de

talha dourada e é considerada das
mais belas do País. Uma caminhada

militar remonta aos séculos XIV a XVII.

1690, um ex-líbris das fortificações
marítimas da antiga Praça de Guerra,
em Lagos. E faça uma breve pausa

Gil Eanes, a native of Lagos, was the
first Portuguese mariner to sail past
Cape Bojador, on the northern coast
of Western Sahara. In his home town
we suggest a walk around the old centre starting with a visit to the Igreja de
Santo António 1 (GPS: 37º 5’ 58.57” N /
-8º 40’ 16.98“ W) church. Built in 1707,
its interior boasts a giltwood decoration
that is considered one of the loveliest
in the country. A three-minute stroll
away is the Castelo dos Governadores (Governors’ Castle) 2 (GPS: 37º
5’ 59.74” N / -8º 40’ 9.015“ W), whose
military architecture dates back to the
14th and 17th centuries. Continue on
to the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira 3
(GPS: 37º 5’ 56.42” N / -8º 40’ 6.761“
W), a fortress built between 1680 and
1690 and a key element of the maritime
defences of Lagos’s old Praça de Guerra (war square). Take a short break to
sample a Dom Rodrigo, a famed local
sweet, before heading for the Monte da

Atlântico, o rio Arade tem em Portimão o seu grande porto.

sul de Portugal Continental.
Na descida da serra, pare para provar o típico Bolo do Tacho e continue
até às Caldas de Monchique 2 (GPS:

estância termal, cujas águas têm propriedades terapêuticas.
Faça-se à estrada até à Quinta do

The River Arade flows from the Serra
do Caldeirão range to the Atlantic
Ocean, with its major port being Portimão. Start the route at Fóia 1 (GPS:

the highest point of the Serra de Monchique range and, indeed, of all southern Portugal. On your way downhill,
stop to try a traditional Bolo do Tacho
cake and then continue on to the Caldas de Monchique thermal spa 2

W), whose waters have therapeutic

Stay on the road to the Quinta do

A Quinta do Morgado da Torre foi a
primeira adega no Algarve a produzir
vinhos de quinta, com denominação
de origem protegida. Vinhos esses
nascidos em ligeiras encostas viradas
a sul, que recebem a influência amena
das brisas marítimas e que revelam
uma identidade própria.
The Morgado da Torre was the first
Algarve winery to produce labelled estate wines with protected designation
of origin DOP/DOC – Portimão. The
wines have a strong identity, made as
they are from grapes grown on gentle
south-facing slopes caressed by sea
breezes.

uma mesquita após a reconquista da
cidade aos mouros, pelo rei D. Dinis.
É tempo de passear na Quinta Mata-Mouros 7 (T. (+351) 289 510 460 - GPS: 37º
10’ 53” N / -8º 26’ 59“ W), em Silves, e
de fazer a prova de vinhos na adega.
Moorish traditions live on today in the
region, from the ceramics of Lagoa to
the imposing castle at Silves.
Start your route near Lagoa, in the
village of Ferragudo, with a visit to
the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição 1 (GPS: 37º 7’ 24.08” N / -8º 31’
18.65“ W) church and the Forte de São
João do Arade fortress 2 (GPS: 37º 7’
21.85” N / -8º 31’ 18.76“ W). Continue

watchtower. On the way, make sure
to try the local almond and fig sweets,
including queijo do figo (literally ‘fig

8’ 59.01” N / -8º 28’ 35.83“ W), with its
lovely vines and the chance to try the
estate’s wines.
In the lunch break try local dishes at
one of the restaurants listed.
Hit the road again as far as the Castelo
de Silves 5 (GPS: 37º 11’ 26.10” N /
-8º 26’ 16.40“ W), the Algarve’s largest
castle and Portugal’s finest example of
Moorish military architecture. Do visit
the Sé de Silves catheral 6 (GPS: 37º
11’ 24.11” N / -8º 26’ 19.66“ W), too,
which is thought to have been built on
the site of a mosque after Silves was
retaken from the Moors in the reign of
Dom Dinis (1279 to 1325).
Now you are ready to head for the
nearby Quinta Mata-Mouros 7 (T.

This route takes you to the cliff-framed
beaches in the Albufeira area that are
much featured on tourist postcards.
Start by taking a look at the city’s most
famous monument, the Torre do Relógio
(Clock-tower) 1 (GPS: 37º 5’ 13.46” N /
-8º 15’ 8.794“ W). Move on to the Igreja
Matriz 2 (GPS: 37º 5’ 14.95” N / -8º 15’
16.39“ W), the parish church built in the
18th century in Neoclassical style, which
harbours the Cruz de Avis, the cross that
is the symbol of the monastic military order to which Albufeira once belonged.
Carry on as far as the Praia dos Pescadores 3 (GPS: 37º 5’ 12.65” N / -8º
14’ 59.10“ W), a Blue Flag beach, via the
Arco da Travessa da Igreja Velha 4

– an arch that is all that remains of a
much larger Moorish structure. Take the
chance to try a farrobito – a local sweet
made with carob. Then we suggest you
head for the vines of Adega do Cantor 5

over the Atlantic, and a chance to try its
wines.

Quinta da Vinha
A tradição do vinho Cabrita já remonta a 1977. Foi nesse ano que José André, adquiriu a quinta e produziu uvas
tradicionais algarvias, dando origem
ao seu vinho “caseiro”.
Em 2007 nasce o vinho Cabrita tinto e
rosé, com uma produção de 11 300 e
3000 garrafas, respetivamente.

back to 1977. It was then that José
André, bought the estate and began
growing traditional Algarve grapes,
giving rise to is “home-made” wine.
In 2007, Cabrita red and rosé wines
were produced, with a production of
