Why Environmental Education?…
The use of natural resources by man has been rising.
This leads to a growing environmental impact.

What is Eco-Schools?
Eco-Schools is an international programme of the
Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), that
aims to empower students to be the change that our
sustainable world needs, engaging them in fun and
action-orientated learning.

and support framework to the work done by the
school.

What is Eco-Schools?
It is a democratic and participatory programme that
provides an excellent opportunity for students to
experience active citizenship in their school.
Destined preferably to primary and secondary
schools, although it may be implemented in any
degree of teaching.

Green Campus Programme
Eco-University Programme (Green Campus), such as
Eco-Schools, encourages practical environmental
education and the empowerment of campus to
become exemplar in environmental stewardship.
Throughout the pilot research and subsequent work,
it was found that the environmental impact of the
higher education sector is significant, but rates of
campus uptake of traditional environmental
management systems are low.

Increased Environmental Awareness… Students (as well
as professors and other staff) are encouraged to use their
new environmental knowledge in the everyday life of the
university. This helps students to see the relevance of
what they learn in the classroom.
Students Empowerment… Through a democratic process
students can take control of their own environment,
learning and making decisions about how to improve both
their home and their university environment.

Why become an Green Campus?
Financial Savings… Actions taken through the programme
may lead to savings in the university's energy bills and
water consumption, for example. Reducing waste and
collecting materials for recycling, for example, can help
raise money for the university.
International Connections… University can link with other
Universities in their own country and other countries.
These links not only provide an opportunity for
universities to share environmental information but can
also be used as a means for cultural exchange and
improving language skills.

Green Campus Programme Structure
Green Campus methodology encompasses Seven
Steps that any university can adopt. The process
involves a wide range of stakeholders, but students
play the central role.
After a period of participation, an evaluation of the
success of these initiatives and the methodology is
undertaken, and the whole Green Campus
Programme, for each University is assessed.

Step 2: Environmental Review/Audit
Work begins with a review or assessment of the
environmental impact of the university.
The results of your Environmental Review will inform your
Action Plan; assisting your university to decide whether
change is necessary, urgent, or not required at all. It will also
help you to set realistic targets and measure your success.
The Environmental Review is crucial to understanding the
current environmental situation in a university and provides
the basis of the Action Plan (Step 3 of the Methodology).

Step 3: Action Plan
The action plan is the core of your Green Campus work
and should be developed using the results of your
environmental review/audit.
This information is used to identify priority areas and create
an action plan, setting achievable and realistic targets and
deadlines to improve environmental performance on specific
issues by listing a number of agreed environmental
objectives, along with deadlines and clearly allocated
responsibilities for each step. Where possible, it should also
be linked to the curriculum, show any cost implications, and
specify arrangements for monitoring and evaluation.

To find out whether or not you are successfully
achieving the targets laid out in your Action Plan, you
must monitor and measure your progress.

Step 5: Curriculum Work
Besides increasing the status of the programme, linking
Green Campus activities to the curriculum ensures that
Green Campus is truly integrated within the university
community.
The general strategy suggested is that of infusing
environmental education concepts into the already existing
subjects and not that of presenting a new subject. In
addition to increasing an awareness of the environment, the
weaving of an environmental education dimension in a
particular subject enriches the subject concerned and thus
makes it more relevant and interesting.

Step 7: Eco-Code
Eco-Code is a mission statement. It should demonstrate,
in a clear and imaginative way, your university's
commitment to improving its environmental
performance.
Eco-Code should list the main objectives of your Action Plan,
covering real actions that pupils and staff intend to carry out.
It is crucial that students play a key role in the development
of the Eco-Code, as this will give them a greater sense of
responsibility towards the values the Eco-Code represents.
