Dear Parents:
Finally “real” spring is here! I hope you are as happy as I am,
full of energy, and enjoying this beautiful weather!
I’m writing to let you know about our Portuguese as a World Language lessons. I am very
proud of the students’ progress and enthusiasm.
In grades k-2, we have played games, learned names of animals and new songs. One of
the songs, about elephants, helps to learn not only vocabulary, but also reviews counting from 1
to 10, forward and backward. Another new song, “Meu Pintinho Amarelinho”, besides helping to
learn new vocabulary, reviews words related to body parts and actions, such as “comer” (eat)
and “faz” (does). In addition to learning the songs, the students also had a chance to make an
elephant’s, and a chick’s mask. We just started a new unit on toys and plays. Our lessons have
involved lots of artistic and body-kinesthetic activities. New vocabulary: máscara, pular corda,
amarelinha, peteca, aviãozinho, asas, dobrar, papel, dentro-fora, jogar, bola, dominó, minha vez.
In grades 3-5, we have learned about the history of Portuguese language, the countries
where Portuguese is the official language (by the way, eight countries spread around four
continents, besides all the communities of Portuguese speakers, in countries such as Canada,
Italy, Spain, Australia, Switzerland, England, and many others). The students were surprised
when they got to know that Portuguese is one of the languages most spoken in the world, much
more than French, and Russian.
Our current lessons are being based on the observation and comparison between works
of important artists, and we started with a picture by Cândido Portinari (see websites listed
below). Besides learning vocabulary and sentences structures, the students are also practicing
important thinking skills such as compare/contrast, and making inferences.
Below you will find some websites that you can access with your children so he/she could
practice some Portuguese at home. Please, make sure you look at the videos and websites with
you child, since the use of internet by kids requires us to be extra vigilant.

Prezados Pais:
Finalmente a primavera chegou! Eu espero que vocês estejam tão
felizes quanto eu, cheios de energia e aproveitando este tempo maravilhoso!
Escrevo-lhes para informá-los sobre o andamento de nossas aulas de Português como
Língua Mundial. Estou muito orgulhosa do progresso e do entusiasmo dos alunos.
Nas séries k-2, temos brincado de jogos, aprendido nomes de animais e novas músicas.
Uma delas, que fala de elefantes, ajuda a aprender não apenas vocabulário novo, mas também a
rever a contagem progressiva e regressiva de números de 1 a 10. Uma outra canção, “Meu
Pintinho Amarelinho”, além de ajudar a aprender vocabulário, também revê palavras relacionadas
a partes do corpo e alguns verbos, como comer e fazer. Além de aprender as músicas, os alunos
também tiveram a chance de fazer uma máscara de elefante e uma de pintinho. Nós também já
começamos uma nova unidade sobre brinquedos e brincadeiras. As lições tem envolvido muitas
atividades artísticas e físicas.
Nas séries 3-5, estudamos sobre a história da língua portuguesa no mundo, sobre os
países onde o português é língua oficial (oito países espalhados por 04 continentes, sem contar
as grandes comunidades de falantes em países como Canadá, Itália, Espanha, Austrália, Suíça,
Inglaterra e muitos outros). Os alunos ficaram muito surpresos ao descobrir que o Português é
uma das línguas mais faladas do mundo, mais que o francês e mais que o russo, por exemplo.
Nossas aulas atuais estão sendo baseadas na observação e comparação de trabalhos de
artistas importantes, e nós começamos com uma pintura feita por Cândido Portinari. Além de
aprender vocabulário novo e novas estruturas linguísticas, os estudantes também estão
praticando habilidades de pensamento muito importantes, como comparar, contrastar e fazer
inferências.
Abaixo vocês encontrarão alguns websites e vídeos para que você e seus filhos possam se
divertir enquanto eles aprendem Português. Por favor, tenham a certeza de acompanhar suas
crianças enquanto elas usam a Internet para acessar os vídeos e páginas em Português.
