PAMPILHOSA DA SERRA
Janeiro de Baixo
The Zêzere already went through Barroca and Janeiro de
Cima when it discovers Janeiro de Baixo. A mill, sculpted
in rock, salutes its arrival. Further on, we can enjoy it at
the camping park or at the recreational area.
The centre of the village, its churches and chapels feel
the caress of the river and calm it with its schist rock
whispers that he will receive again in Álvaro and Pedrógão Pequeno. This is the relationships between the
river and the villages.

Janeiro de Baixo
Walking around the village
Parochial church
This small temple, of simple design,
shows a curved wicker door in its
main front, dominated by a window
made of the same material. On the
side, there exists another door with
an inscription from 1878, date in
which Janeiro de Baixo joined the
Apostolado da Oração.
Later an addorsed tower was built,
on the right side, finished in a pyramid that contains two bells. In the
interior of the temple the main and
side altar pieces stand out, dressed
in vine shoots, dated from the 17th
and 18th centuries.
Capela do Senhor Santo Cristo
Situated at the entrance of the settlement, this was the oldest chapel
in the parish and it is believed that it
was the “Cathedral” of the Benefice
of São Domingos. Two or three steps
gave access to a small uncovered
atrium. The floor was artistically
covered with small stones, brought
from the river, making thus appear a
Star of David. In the center reigned,
on a simple altar, a Crucifix of Saint
Christ, flanked by oil paintings on
chestnut wood tablets. On one of
these tablets was painted the bed
of a sick person, cured by the Lord
Saint Christ and, over that painting,
there were tablets that exist even
today, with an inscription alluding to
the cure of an inhabitant of Janeiro
de Baixo.
Rock-sculpted mill
Planted on one of the shores of the
river Zêzere next to Janeiro de Baixo
there exists an old watermill that
moved with the force of the waters.
What makes it unique is the way
it was carved on the slope, taking
advantage of the rock to cover the
traditional instruments of milling,
once in working order.
Boulders of Janeiro de Baixo
Near the village the Boulders of Foz
de Bogas, the Boulder of Hortas and
the Boulder Mosqueiro erect, making
a tight “Mouth of the Boulders of
Foz de Bogas”, from where pass the
waters of the river Zêzere.
Camping park
On one of the shores of the river
Zêzere and inside the settlement
of Janeiro de Baixo, there is a rural
camping park, recently built and offering excellent infrastructure.
