These lots are deposited in the Oceanography Museum of the institution. Specimens were obtained from shallow and deep waters during 26 oceanographic expeditions performed since 1960. Other samples were recently collected from the Potiguar Basin in the state of Rio Grande do Norte as well as recent studies. Taxonomy, Systematics, Anatomy, Morphology, Biogeography and Ecology studies have been carried out based on this collection. These studies lend support to new studies and activities carried out mainly in northern and northeastern Brazil. The aim of one of these studies is to review the Taxonomy and Systematics of species of the family Arcidae occurring on the continental shelf off Brazil. The family Arcidae unites a group of marine bivalves that inhabit rocky substrates and are distributed in warm tropical waters from the midlittoral zone to great depths. The specimens of Arcidae in the collection of the Oceanography Museum (Museu de Oceanografia) of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in cataloged lots were compared with descriptions in the literature to reconfirm the genus and species identifications and were also quantified and cataloged based on their respective collection sites. All information produced in this review is being digitized for the creation of a future electronic database. Besides material deposited in the Museu de Oceanografia of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (MOUFPE), the review is also based on lots from other institutions: Museu de Malacologia, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (MMUFRPE), Pernmabuco, Brazil; Museu Oceanográfico Prof. Eliezér de Carvalho Rios (MORG), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), São Paulo, Brazil; Museum National D’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France; and Musée Genève, Geneva, Switzerland. In this study, the family Arcidae is represented by 947 lots with 7970 specimens distributed among 12 genera in a total of 21 species. Thus, the study of the family Arcidae has ample representativity, with samples from different regions along the coast of Brazil as well as other locations of the Atlantic Ocean.
