Researcher at the Laboratory of Communication and Telematics of the Centre of Information and
Systems of the University of Coimbra since July 2008.
Ph.D. in Sciences and Information Technology at the University of Coimbra since October 2008
– Granted by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) – POPH – QREN - SFRH / BD /
60342 / 2009
Three years partnership with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, University of
Murcia, Spain and Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic, including several research
activities developed in conjunction and invited lessons given in all those Universities.
Co-Supervisor of several MSc thesis. Several talks and tutorials presented all over the world.
Team Leader in the LCT-Sensors group at CISUC. Invited to give several lessons at the
University of Coimbra, mainly regarding communication networks and mobility.
Main research activity developed in the scope of the ICT FP7 GINSENG Project – “Performance
Control in Wireless Sensor Networks”, http://www.ict-ginseng.eu/, with GALP Energia Portugal, SAP-Germany, SICS-Sweden, Technical University Braunschweig - Germany,
University of Cyprus - Cyprus, Cork University – Ireland and University of Lancaster – UK.
GINSENG was designed for critical scenarios and deployed in the Petrogal’s oil refinery in
Sines. Although I was responsible for the local radio spectrum analysis and for developing
related software modules, my main task in this project was to do the entire software integration,
the on field deployment and the initial assessment.
Related with one scenario of the GINSENG Project, the personnel safety scenario, the main
contribution of the Ph.D thesis was the development of an end-to-end solution to support reliable
mobility of wireless sensor networks when assisted by proxy devices (e.g. ARM) with selforganization. This solution was mainly developed in C with a Java-based middleware and a
PostgreSQL database. The embedded software used in the sensor nodes was developed in
ContikiOS-2.4. In this solution, proxy devices were capable to create independent networks and
support the heavier tasks on behalf of the constrained and tiny sensor nodes. The entire
communication was based on IPv6 via 6lowPAN, MIPv6 and specific MIPv6-based protocols
developed for this proxy-based solution.
Although not related with GINSENG, other projects in the same area were developed during this
period. For instance, the development of a low-cost embedded solution, based on wireless sensor
networks, for use in medical applications, namely: the patient’s weight measurement in Intensive
Care Units. This project comprised the development of specific low-cost hardware to attach on
micaZ motes and the respective drivers developed in TinyOS-2.x. Data gathered from the sensor
nodes was then passed to a Java middleware, stored in a MySQL database and presented in real
time through a website developed using open source technologies, such as, PHP, HTML and
Javascript. A webservice TOMCAT/APACHE with SOAP was used to allow direct access from
the website to the middleware methods, which in turn allow direct access to the sensor network
using UDP over 6lowPAN sockets.

Along with the projects summarized above I have collaborated with IETF in the definition of a
MIPv6 version to apply in low power networks. The biggest contribution was the proposal of an
Internet Draft with a complete solution to reduce the complexity and weight of the original
MIPv6. This micro-compressed version of MIPv6 was implemented in ContikiOS and compared
with the original MIPv6, which I also implemented in ContikiOS-2.4.

Development of an RFID based solution to monitor elders in their own homes. End-to-end
application developed in C# with SQL Server database. In this solution the objective was to
develop not only a high level application but also the software drivers for a Texas RFID reader
and to define the entire communication protocol. The final solution was capable to show in real
time peoples’ location at a specific moment, defining patterns and triggering alarms when
anomalies occurred.

Doctoral Program in Sciences and Information Technology – Development and assessment of
new models to support reliability in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks.
This PhD involved several years of research work on mobility management in Wireless Sensor
Networks, targeting critical scenarios running in real time. As a result, a new concept of network
assistance was created, bringing IEEE802.11 mesh networks to support the resource constrained
IEEE802.15.4, originating thus the Network of Proxies (NoP). Several papers have been
published and talks, tutorial and lessons have been given. This work was supported by FCT
POPH – QREN - SFRH / BD / 60342 / 2009 and applied to the GINSENG Project IST FP7

Development and maintenance of a standalone freeware Java application for ornithology
management, named ORNIWARE (www.orniware.com). Currently in the version 2.6 this
software was released in four different languages, namely, Portuguese, English, French and
Spanish, and it is nowadays used by hundreds of bird breeders all around the world. A new
version, named ORNIWARE 3.0 PRO, is currently under debugging and the objective will be to
release it before Christmas. The new version will also be released in Dutch and German, maybe
the two most spoken languages in the ornithology world. ORNIWARE is thus a personal
contribution to a very restrict community. It represents an innovation in the area because it is the
only multi-platform freeware application existent for this purpose in the web. Usually,
ORNIWARE is distributed in three different installers, for MACOSX, Windows and Linux,
respectively.
Development and maintenance of several websites for associations of ornithology (eg.
www.aocoimbra.com ). Development of a Java based management software for an
environmental association named “Associação Rio da Fonte”.
