PRESS RELEASE
The first edition of Est Art Fair – International Contemporary Art Fair will
take place in Estoril, Portugal, from the July 10th to July 13th, 2014.
Announced in May 2013, the Est Art project, was created with the purpose of launching an international contemporary art fair in Portugal—
happening every year at the end of the Art Fairs’ season.
Est Art Fair 2014 venue of choice is the Estoril Congress Center.
On the July 10th will be the Preview (by invitation only) the two following
days, Friday 11th, and Saturday 12th, Est Art Fair will be open between
3:30 and 9 pm. On Sunday the closing time will be at 8 pm.
For its first edition, our Fair will count with the participation of over 35 Galleries coming from up to 9 different countries (Brazil, Colombia, France,
Germany, México, Portugal, Spain, the UK, and USA). These galleries will
be present as exhibitors, or presenting Solo Projects. Additionally, the Fair
will have an extensive Curatorial Program, which includes the exhibition
“Drawing the World”, presenting 19 artworks by essential artists, coming
from 10 countries, in an international and comprehensive perspective.
Focusing on “Drawing”, in its widest sense, as the primary theme of Est
Art Fair 2014, we will emphasize it as a practice crossing over multiple art
mediums, and constituting some of the most flexible artistic practices.
The theme will also be developed by our curatorial projects and proposed
to all Galleries participating in this year’s edition.
Drawing will have a strong presence at Est Art Fair first edition, and will
be showcased in the multiple and diverse formats in which it is present
in current artistic practices. As a practice, Drawing is common to both
the conceptual domain and more day-to-day, long-established practices,
proving to be a transcultural field. Finally, in times as complex as our own,

drawing is used almost as a form of resistance by the artists, being simultaneously close to modes of thinking and easily spread.
Est Art Fair 2014 will also give particular emphasis to its large Curatorial
and Conference Program, which will constitute a different approach on
how to build an art fair/show with an attractive profile and content.
The International Gallery Selection Committee members for our 2014
edition are Barbara Thumm (Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin, Germany),
Eduardo Brandão (Galeria Vermelho, São Paulo, Brazil), Pedro Maisterra
(Galeria MaisterraValbuena, Madrid, Spain), Pedro Oliveira (Galeria
Pedro Oliveira, Porto, Portugal) and Vera Cortês (Vera Cortês Art Agency,
Lisboa, Portugal).
Delfim Sardo (Portugal), Moacir dos Anjos (Brazil), and Filipa Oliveira
(Portugal) constitute Est Art Fair’s Group of Curators.

3. CURATORIAL PROGRAM
This emphasis on Drawing, in its widest sense, is the organizing concept
of Est Art Fair curatorial area, and also a challenge presented to all participating galleries.
“Drawing”, in its widest sense, is a practice that crosses over multiple art
mediums, and constitutes some of the most flexible artistic practices. As
such, it will be showcased in the multiple and diverse formats in which it
is present in current artistic practices.
As a practice, Drawing is common to both the conceptual field and more

day-to-day, long-established practices, proving to be a transcultural field.
Finally, in times as complex as our own, drawing is used almost as a form
of resistance by the artists, being simultaneously close to modes of thinking and easily spread.
These are the reasons why Est Art Fair decided this discipline as the underlying theme proposed to the galleries, and to be developed within the
context of the curatorial projects.
3.1. CURATORIAL AREAS
Drawing the World
The exhibition “Drawing the World” (Desenhar o Mundo) showcases
pieces that explore several uses of drawing—used as index or archive, as
a device to establish boundaries, interpersonal experiences, to transform
space, used as a political or poetic action, or even as sound. The various
artists and artworks presented are proof of this multiplicity of uses, procedures and aesthetical choices, and will offer the viewer the possibility
to directly experience the work of essential artists such as Gordon Matta-Clark, Dennis Oppenheim, Helena Almeida, or Álvaro Lapa.
The exhibition Drawing the World (Desenhar o Mundo) will showcase
works by the following artists:
Jorge Macchi (1963, Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Álvaro Lapa (1939, Évora – 2006, Porto, Portugal)
Dennis Oppenheim (1938, Electric City, Washington – 2011, New York, US)
Franz Erhard Walther (1939, Fulda, Germany)
Nicolás Paris (1977, Bogotá, Colombia)
Nicolás Robbio (1975, Mar del Plata, Argentina)
Kader Attia (1970, Dugny, France)
Gordon Matta-Clark (1943, New York – 1978, New York, US)
Fernando Bryce (1965, Lima, Peru)
Silvia Bächli (1956, Baden, Switzerland)
Oscar Muñoz (1971, Popayán, Colombia)
Francis Alÿs (1959, Antwerp, Belgium)
Helena Almeida (1934, Lisbon, Portugal)

Rosa Barba (1972, Agrigento, Italy)
Bruno Cidra (1983, Lisbon, Portugal)
Lawrence Weiner (1942, New York, US)
Solo Projects
The same concept of the Exhibition “Drawing the World” is extended to
“Solo Projects”, inviting art galleries to present a project by a specific artist. The space for each project has a rigorous correspondence to a significant historical moment—the Prouneraum (Proun Space) installation by
Lazar Lissitzky, as it was presented at the Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung, in 1923—in which, within the limits of a small room (346x346x320cm)
the artist conducted a major operation on the position of the viewer, their
immersion in the projectual space, and the spatialization of Malevitch’s
legacy.
The Solo Projects participating artists and galleries are:
Franziska Furten (Schleicher/ Lange - Berlin)
Leonor Antunes (Air de Paris - Paris)
Daniel Guzmán (Kurimanzutto – Ciudad de México)
Attila Csörgő (Galerija Gregor Podnar - Berlin)
Pedro Sousa Vieira (Galeria Belo-Galsterer - Lisbon)
Diango Hernández (Marlborough Contemporary - London)
Nara Amelia (Galeria Jaqueline Martins – São Paulo)
Brígida Baltar (Galeria Nara Roesler – São Paulo)
Johanna Calle (Galeria Casas Riegner – Bogotá)
The curatorial sections of the Est Art Fair 2014 will also have the ‘Art
Talks’, dedicated to the themes:
. “Drawing”
. “Collecting Drawing”
. “Curating Drawing”
. “Artists’ Books”
