3.1 Summary
3.1.a Executive Summary (in Portuguese)
O projeto estratégico da Unidade de Investigação para o Desenvolvimento Interior (UDI) do Instituto Politécnico da Guarda (IPG) baseia
posicionamento estratégico em ser um centro de pesquisa com o objetivo de contribuir para o desenvolvimento regional do
insere. Consciente da importância da sua existência no desenvolvimento e crescimento regional, a UDI desempenha o seu papel com dinam
coordenando os diferentes grupos de pesquisa de modo a que eles produzam trabalhos de forma complementar e com aplicações de intere
sinergias criadas na investigação, em várias áreas da ciência, são muito importantes assim como a sua contribuição para a sociedade de fo
melhorar o desenvolvimento económico e tecnológico e a criação de novos conhecimentos. Neste sentido, a inovação, tecnologia,
ambiente, saúde e gestão são desenvolvidas numa perspectiva teórica e interesse prático, aplicadas pelos agentes regionais. Diferentes
de colaboração e cooperação foram realizados de modo a intensificar as relações entre a educação e a realidade e, por conseguinte, facilita
aplicação do novo conhecimento criado.
3.1.b Executive Summary (in English)
The strategic project of the Research Unit for the Inland Development (UDI) of Polytechnic Institute of Guarda (IPG) is built
positioning of a research center with the main goal of contributing to the regional development of the context is in. Conscientious of the
importance of its existence in the regional growth and development, UDI takes its part with dynamic coordinating different research group
they can produce works of apply interest in a complementary way. The synergies created in the research, in several areas of science, are v
important as well theirs contribution for society to improve economic and technologic development and creating new knowledge. In
innovation, technology, education, environment, health and management are worked in a theoretical perspective and have a practical inte
when they can be applied to the regional agents. Different protocols of collaboration and cooperation were made to increase the links betw
education and reality and therefore facilitate the application of the new knowledge created.

3.2.2. Plan and Methods
Beside the primary objective of UDI of promoting knowledge and science in the institution, the research unit pretends to create conditions
theoretical and applied development, not only for the preparation of faculty and students, but as well as to the dissemination of
this way contribute to maximize the economic and social development of the region. As several authors states (Dzisah and Etzkowitz, 2009
Lundvall, 1992; Edquist, 1997) the Institutions of High Education have a determinant role in a society based on knowledge and innovation
development. Also Arik and Nsiah (2004), Pereira and Schneider (2002), Johnson et al. (2005) and O’HARE (2002) say that in most cases
a positive relation between the existence of Institutions of High Education and regional development, considering that these institutions af
beneficiate the regional they are in, being, sometimes, vital to their sustainable and integrated development. In this sense UDI/IPG takes
of economic and social dynamic (Chaminade et al., 2007) beside the research and education part, being, in this way, an institution of rese
university as well as of entrepreneurial university. Even the final Report of Science in Portugal (Commission of Science and Education
Republic Assembly, 2010) states that the high education in polytechnics should be oriented to the production and application of new know
originate in theoretical research. So, through research and training provision will improve the skills and competences of all economic and s
agents and will provide integration to entire population. The overall objective of UDI is to promote and assemble the research conducted in

regional growth and development. One example of this work is the creation of a Research and Observation Center of Health and Environm

Scientific activity spreading actions
As emphasized in planning and methods section UDI will organize different events to promote the results of the scientific projects impleme
and to show their synergies and complemented areas. The research unit will also to collaborate in several scientific events of the
groups always with the aim of giving relevance to the performance of the research group and its practical virtues. Another way of promotin
communicating the research results it’s to publish conference proceedings and thematic books and to have an intensive public relations
performance, as the research unit pretends to have.
