A Fundação Bial foi criada em Maio de 1994 pelo
Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas e
pelos Laboratórios Bial, com o alto patrocínio de Sua
Excelência o Presidente da República, tendo como objectivo promover a investigação da mente e do comportamento humanos, tanto sob o ponto de vista físico como
espiritual.

Passou, desde então, a administrar o Prémio BIAL - um
dos maiores prémios europeus na área da Saúde - e
instituiu um sistema de Bolsas de Investigação Científica
privilegiando as áreas da Psicofisiologia e da Parapsicologia. Patrocinou até agora duzentos e sessenta e um
grupos de bolseiros, envolvendo oitocentos e quarenta
e três investigadores de vinte e dois países diferentes.
The Bial Foundation, established in May 1994 by the
Council of Rectors of the Portuguese Universities and
by the Bial Laboratories, with the sponsorship of the
President of the Portuguese Republic, aims at encouraging the scientific study of the human being's mind and
behaviour, both physical and spiritual.
The Foundation manages the Bial Award - one of the
most distinguished awards for Health in Europe - and
the Bial Fellowship Programme - being Psychophysiology
and Parapsychology the privileged areas. The Bial
Foundation has been supporting, until now, two hundred
and sixty-one Fellow groups, of a total of eight hundred
and forty-three researchers from twenty-two different
countries.

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
O 7° Simpósio “Aquém e Além do Cérebro” é dedicado
ao tema “Emoções” tendo em consideração as suas várias
dimensões, as quais serão tratadas por especialistas de
áreas diversas. Desta forma é possível analisar uma
multiplicidade de facetas do tema, encarando-o sob
diversas perspectivas, mas mantendo sempre presente a
noção que todos os aspectos do comportamento humano
são influenciados pelas Emoções.
The 7th Symposium “Behind and Beyond the Brain” is
dedicated to the theme “Emotions” in its diverse
dimensions, which will be considered by experts from
different research fields. In this way it is possible to
analyze multiple features of the theme, approached from
different perspectives, but always considering how all
aspects of human behavior are affected by Emotions.
O Simpósio de 2008 segue o mesmo esquema geral dos
Simpósios anteriores. Na sessão de abertura terá lugar
uma conferência magistral do Professor Nico Frijda da
Universidade de Amesterdão com o título “How emotions
work”. Nas manhãs dos 3 dias seguintes terão lugar 3
simpósios, sendo o primeiro dedicado à “Neurobiologia
das Emoções”, o segundo às “Emoções e Psi” e o terceiro
às “Emoções e Comportamentos Sociais”.
The 2008 Symposium follows the same general plan of
previous symposia. In the opening session a general keynote lecture will be given by Professor Nico Frijda of
the University of Amsterdam with the title "How emotions
work". In the morning of the following three days 3
symposia will take place, the first of which is dedicated
to “Neurobiology of Emotions”, the second one to
“Emotions and Psi” and the third to “Emotions and
Social Behaviors”.
A primeira sessão (Neurobiologia das Emoções) será
introduzida por Fernando Lopes da Silva (Amesterdão)
e terá contribuições dos conferencistas Marta Moita
(Lisboa), Ray Dolan (Londres), Tania Singer (Zurique),
e terminará com a conferência magistral de Ralph Adolphs
(Pasadena, Califórnia).
The first session (Neurobiology of Emotions) will be
introduced by Fernando Lopes da Silva (Amsterdam)
and will have contributions by the invited lecturers Marta
Moita (Lisbon), Ray Dolan (London), Tania Singer

Keysers (Groningen), Etzel Cardeña (Lund), Sophia
Frangou (London), and will end with the key-note lecture
of Paul Ekman (San Francisco).
O Simpósio oferece também múltiplas oportunidades
para trocas de ideias entre os conferencistas convidados,
os bolseiros da Fundação BIAL e o público em geral,
por meio de comunicações orais dos bolseiros, que
terminaram recentemente os seus projectos, sessões de
posters, e ainda por ocasião de um Encontro à noite, em
que o público é convidado a debater o tema “Emoções”
com os conferencistas.
The Symposium also offers multiple opportunities for
exchanges of ideas among the invited lecturers, the BIAL
Foundation Fellows and the public in general, by way
of oral communications from the Fellows who finished
their projects recently, poster sessions and also an evening
Open Encounter where the public may debate the theme
“Emotions” with the lecturers.
