Debris and Friction of Self-Ligating and Conventional Orthodontic Brackets After Clinical Use Objective: to compare the degree of debris and friction of conventional and self-ligating orthodontic brackets before and after clinical use. Methods: two sets of three conventional ligated (n=16) and selfligating brackets (n=16) were bonded from the first molar to the first premolar, on 8 individuals, after a passive segment of 0.019’ x 0.025’ – inch stainless steel archwire was inserted into each group of brackets. Frictional force and debris level (via magnifying lens) was evaluated as-received and after 8 weeks of intraoral exposure. Two-way Anova, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and Spearman correlation were applied to statistical analysis at 0.05 level of significance. Results: friction level in conventional brackets was significantly higher when compared to self-ligating brackets before clinical use (p<0.001). Clinical exposure for 8 weeks provided a significant increase of friction (p<0.001) and the debris score ( p< 0.05) on both systems. To self-ligating brackets, friction raised in average 0.21 N (191%) while for conventional ones, this values was 0.52 N (47.2%). Micorscopic analisys showed a 50% gain in slots dirtiness from self-ligating brackets compared to conventionals. Conclusion: Self-ligating and conventional brackets when exposed to the oral environment for 8 weeks showed a significant increase of friction during the sliding mechanics and in superficial slots debris. Quests about the effect of this on orthodontic treatment time should be investigated. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 3 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC2 AVALIAÇÃO DO NÍVEL DA CRISTA ÓSSEA ALVEOLAR VESTIBULAR E LINGUAL DE MOLARES INFERIORES PRÉ E POS TRATAMENTO ORTODONTICO POR MEIO DA TOMOGRAFIA COMPUTADORIZADA DE FEIXE CÔNICO: RESULTADOS PRELIMINARES Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru – Universidade de São Paulo Autores: Santos PBD*, Herrera FS, Ferreira MC, Garib DG. Evaluation of buccal and lingual alveolar bone crest level of mandibular second molars pre and posttreatment by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: Preliminary results Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and to compare, by means of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography, the buccal and lingual bony dehiscences of mandibular second molars before and after molar uprighting and also to compare the alveolar bone morphology between groups. Methodology: Nine CBCT exams were taken of patients without first molar with voxel dimensions of 0.2 mm and field of view of 6cm using the i-CAT Cone-Beam 3-D Dental Imaging System. Images of CBCT were divided into two groups: Group 1 (9 uprighting second molars) and Group 2 (7 non-uprighting molars). Linear measurements were performed using the i-CAT vision on crossectional sections between cement-enamel junction of second molar and upper area of the alveolar bone crest. Dependent t tests were used to evaluate the alveolar bone crest level pre and posttreatment within group. T tests were used to evaluate intergroup differences regarding the periodontal morphology. Results: There was no significant difference between alveolar bone height pre and posttreatment in both groups, however bone dehiscences were significantly higher in Group 1. Conclusions: Although, uprighting second molars have bone crest level reduced, it is possible to control the dehiscences during the orthodontic treatment. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 4 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC3 DEGRADAÇÃO DE FORÇA ENTRE ELÁSTICOS INTERMAXILARES COM E SEM LÁTEX: ESTUDO IN SITU Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia – UESB Autores: Sant’Anna LIDA*, Andrade CSS, Mendes J, Anselmo C, Coqueiro RS, Santos R, Pithon MM. Force decay between intermaxillary elastics with and without Latex: in situ study Objective: To evaluate force decay between intermaxillary orthodontic elastics with and without latex, in the oral medium in different time intervals. Materials and Methods: Intermaxillary orthodontic elastics with and without latex, of 1/8, 1/4 and 5/16 in diameter were evaluated in an in situ study. For this purpose, 26 patients served as hosts for the elastics during the evaluation period. Initially, on the molds of these patients, 52 thermoplasticized plates 1 mm thick were made, onto which the orthodontic accessories were bonded, and these served to maintain the elastics distended (30 mm) throughout the experimentation period. The force released by the elastics at this distance was evaluated in the time intervals of0, 12 and 24 hours. Statistical analysis of the results obtained was performed using the Friedman, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests, adopting a 5% level of significance. Results: elastics with and without latex presented permanent deformation and increase in internal diameter throughout the entire period. Elastics with latex, 1/8 in diameter maintained higher levels of force than those without latex. Elastics measuring 1/4 and 5/16 without latex presented a higher level of force in time intervals of 0 and 12h compared with those with latex, but at the end of the experiment (24h) no significant difference was observed between them (p>0.05). Conclusion: Intermaxillary elastics with latex presented a higher level of force and underwent less degradation than those without latex. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 5 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC4 DESGASTE DENTÁRIO COMO ESTIMADOR DA IDADE CRONOLÓGICA EM POPULAÇÕES INDÍGENAS Universidade Federal do Pará Autores: Vieira EP*, Barbosa MS, Normando D. Tooth wear as an estimator of chronological age in amazon indigenous The age in indigenous populations is estimated based on family structure and physical examination performed by a medical and dental staff, as well as anthropologists. However, the accuracy of existing methods is questionable because the main criteria used to limit its precision in children. The aim of this study is to evaluate the occlusal tooth wear, as an estimator of age in indigenous populations of the Xingu. We examined 263 individuals on permanent dentition. Forty individuals living in an urban area, Belém – PA (Brazil), were used as control group, and 223 were Indigenous from the Middle Valley of Xingu. In the indigenous population 126 belonged to ethnic Arara, 62 Xicrin-Kayapó and 46 Assurini. A modifief ooth wear index was used according to Mockers, Mafart and Aubry (2004). Data were statistically examined by linear regression analysis at 95% confidence. We observed a strong association between tooth wear and chronological age in indigenous populations. The wear was able to explain 86% of the variation in age at Arara ethnicity, 69% among Xicrin-Kaiapó and 64% in group Assurini. In the urban population only 10% of age could have determined by tooth wear. Tooth wear can be used as a helpful reliable index to determine chronological age in indigenous populations from Xingu River. Effectiveness of varnish with CPP-ACP in Prevention of Caries Lesions around Orthodontic Brackets: An OCT Evaluation Objective: To evaluate the in vitro efficiency of applying varnish containing Casein Phosphopeptide (CPP) and Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) in prevention of caries lesions around orthodontic brackets. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, brackets were bonded to the vestibular surface of bovine incisors, and eight groups were formed (n=15) according to exposure of oral hygiene substances and enamel varnish: 1 (control) brushing only performed, 2 (control) brushing + use of mouth wash with fluoride, 3 Duraphat varnish application only (Colgate-Palmolive Ind. E Com. Ltda, São Paulo, SP, Brazil), 4 Duraphat + brushing, 5 Duraphat + brushing + mouth wash, 6 MI varnish application (GC America, United States, USA), 7 MI + brushing and 8 MI+ brushing + mouth wash. The experimental groups alternated between pH cycling and the procedures described, and were kept in an oven at temperature of 37°C. Both brushing and immersion in solutions was performed in a time interval of 1 minute, followed by washing in deionized water three times a day for 28 days of experimentation. Afterwards evaluation by Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of the special type (Ganymede OCT/Thorlabs, Newton, USA) was performed. In each group a scanning exam of the white spot lesion area (around the region where brackets were bonded) and depth measurement of caries lesions were performed. Results: Groups 1 and 3 were shown to differ statistically from Groups 5, 6, 7, and 8 (p=.000). MI varnish was shown to be more effective in diminishing caries lesion depth, when compared with Duraphat, irrespective of being associated with brushing and mouth wash, or not. Conclusion: Application CPP-ACP-containing varnish irrespective of being associated with brushing and mouthwash, or not, reduced depth of caries lesions around orthodontic brackets. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 7 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC6 IMPACTO DA PALATOPLASTIA NA RELAÇÃO SAGITAL MAXILO-MANDIBULAR DE PACIENTES COM FISSURA LÁBIO-PALATINA UNILATERAL Universidade Federal do Pará Autores: Bichara LM*, Araújo RC, Normando D. Primary palatoplasty impact on maxillomandibular sagittal relationship of UCLP patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Objective: To evaluate through a meta-analysis isolated effects of lip and palate primary surgery on sagittal maxillary and mandibular relationship among unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients. Methods: This meta-analysis was registered at PROSPERO. A search on electronic databases was done using the terms “cleft lip palate”, “growth”, “surgery” and “repair”. Hand search and “grey literature” was also performed. Only controlled clinical trials, retrospective or prospective, with nonsyndromic unilateral UCLP, published between 1960 and 2012 were included. Selected papers were assessed by two researchers and must include one group of UCLP operated on lip and palate compared to operated only on the lip. Data heterogeneity was tested and then individual means, SD and sample size were collected and summarized using a random effects model meta-analysis. Results: Six articles were selected for the systematic review, but just 4 were included in the meta-analysis. Although all studies performed lateral cephalometric analysis, just SNA, SNB and ANB were common between them. Statistical analysis didn’t show significant differences for SNA and SNB between patients operated only on lip from lip and palate surgery. ANB evaluation showed a small, but statistical difference. Conclusions: Impaired sagittal growth of the maxilla observed in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate, is a basic consequence of lip surgical repair. Changes produced by palatal repair on maxilla and mandible are insignificant. Palatoplasty seems to cause a minor, but statistically significant, change on intermaxillary relationship. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 8 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC7 ÍNDICE DA PERCEPÇÃO DA SEVERIDADE DA MÁ OCLUSÃO NA DENTIÇÃO DECÍDUA (IPSM): DESENVOLVIMENTO E VALIDAÇÃO. Perception of severity of malocclusion index in the primary dentition (PSMI): development and validation Aim: To develop and validate a perception of severity of malocclusion index (PSMI) for the primary dentition. Methods: The sample consisted of 294 children 3-5 years of age. A calibrated professional examined children for the presence and severity of malocclusion. The severity was indicated by a visual scale of 10 points (less severe 1 - 10 most severe). Descriptive analysis, linear regression uni / multivariate and post hoc Mann-Whitney tests were used. Results: The types of malocclusion independently associated with perception of the severity of malocclusion were: lip coverage (p˂0.001), crowding (p˂0.001), diastema in millimeters (p=0.002), open bite in millimeters (p˂0.001), overbite in millimeters (p=0.010) and anterior crossbite in millimeters (p ˂ 0001). The linear regression equation allowed the construction of the index as follows: IPSM = (lip coverage X 3) + (crowding X 2) + (diastema X 0.5) + (overbite X 0.5) + (anterior open bite X 1) + (anterior crossbite X 2) + 3. The sum of the PSMI scores will indicate whether the child has malocclusion absent (3.0 to 4.0), mild (4.1 to 5.4), moderate (5.5 to 8.9) and severe (≥ 9). Conclusion: The classification of malocclusion severity (absent, mild, moderate and severe) according to the IPSM demonstrates the applicability of the instrument in epidemiological surveys and clinical. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 9 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC8 O ENSINO DA ORTODONTIA NA GRADUAÇÃO E NA FORMAÇÃO DO CLÍNICO-GERAL SOB A PERCEPÇÃO DO ALUNO Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Autores: Barroso MCF*, Lages EMB, Vale MP, Ferreira EF. The undergraduate orthodontics teaching and general practice under the student perception The purpose of this paper is to identify if the undergraduate orthodontics contributes to form general practice besides the national curricular guidelines (NCG) established by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) from Brazil. This is a transversal, investigative and quantitative study with 225 senior undergraduate students of five different dentistry schools from Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was applied a questionnaire of 37 questions, 36 closed questions and one open question. All questions were related to personal data, content taught, teaching methodology, orthodontics skills (measured by diagnoses and treatment decision) and the intention of to realize preventive and interceptive procedures, nominated in this paper as autonomy. From all 232 undergraduate students, only 225 questionnaires were able to the study, with a 3,02% of non-response questionnaires. Just 37,5% of undergraduate students answered that would do orthodontics procedures after college. The orthodontics skills showed up association with to do orthodontics procedures option in their professional career as well to discuss clinical events with the professors as teaching methodology (p≤0,05). This paper concludes, inspire of the NCG demands, that undergraduate orthodontics of researched dentistry school didn’t contribute on all the way on the general practice formation until now. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 10 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-FC9 OS EFEITOS DA QUIMIOCINA CCL3 E DO RECEPTOR CCR1 NA REMODELAÇÃO ÓSSEA INDUZIDA POR FORÇA ORTODÔNTICA EM CAMUNDONGOS Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC Minas) Autores: Andrade Jr. I*,Taddei SRA, Queiroz-Junior CM, Moura AP, Garlet GP, Proudfoot AEI, Teixeira MM, Silva TA. The effect of CCL3 and CCR1 in bone remodeling induced by mechanical loading during orthodontic tooth movement in mice Objective: Bone remodeling (BR) is affected by mechanical loading and inflammatory mediators, including chemokines. The chemokine CCL3 is involved in BR by binding to chemokine receptors CCR1 and CCR5 expressed on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Our group has previously demonstrated that CCR5 down-regulates mechanical loading-induced bone resorption. In this study we investigated the role of CCR1 and CCL3 in BR induced by mechanical loading during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in mice. Methods: A coil spring was placed in C57BL6/J, CCL3-/-, CCR1-/, vehicle and Met-RANTES (an antagonist of CCR5 and CCR1) treated mice. Histopathologic analysis revealed the amount of OTM and osteoclasts. The expression of mediators involved in BR was evaluated by RT-PCR. Results: BR was significantly decreased in CCL3-/- and CCR1-/- mice and in animals treated with Met-RANTES. mRNA levels of RANK, its ligand RANKL, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and RANKL/osteoprotegerin (OPG) ratio were diminished in the periodontium of CCL3-/- and Met-RANTES-treated mice. Met-RANTES treatment also reduced the levels of cathepsin K and metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13). The expression of the osteoblast markers RUNX2 and periostin was decreased, while osteocalcin (OCN) was augmented in CCL3-/- and Met-RANTES-treated mice. Conclusion: Altogether, these findings show that CCR1 is pivotal for BR induced by mechanical loading during OTM and these actions depend, at least in part, on CCL3. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 11 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria Modalidade Pôster ORTO-P1 A INFLUÊNCIA DE COMPONENTES DO ÍNDICE PAR NA SATISFAÇÃO DO PACIENTE ADULTO PÓS TRATAMENTO ORTODÔNTICO Associação Brasileira de Odontologia – Pará Autores: Cecim RL*; Paixão DBP; Medeiros RS; Maia NG Maia, AF Normando D; Mendes SMA. The influence of components of the PAR Index on patient satisfaction after adult orthodontic treatment. Objective: To evaluate if any single factor of the PAR Index influences on the degree of adult patient satisfaction after orthodontic treatment in the long term. Methods: Were analyzed, through the PAR index, occlusal changes occurring after the orthodontic treatment in the long term (5 to 25 years - an average of 8.5 years) using plaster models of 208 adult patients treated with straight-wire orthodontic fixed appliance. The index questionnaire of Dental Impact Daily Living (DI DL) was used to assess patient satisfaction with the outcome of orthodontic treatment in the long term and see which components of the PAR Index were more relevant to the patient. Multiple linear regression analysis and step by step were used to evaluate the influence of the dependent variables, satisfaction and appearance, with the independent variable, PAR Index components. Results: The components of the PAR Index show a determination in 17.2% (p <0.0001) on the total satisfaction of the patient regarding their dental occlusion in at least 5 years after treatment (p <0.0001). The DIDL shows the appearance as the most relevant category to the patient, being influenced by the PAR index in 31.8% (p <0.0001). The PAR Index measures that had more determination on satisfaction were the anterior superior 17.79% (p <0.0001), anterior inferior 12.07% (p <0.0001) and overjet 1.99% (p = 0.0148). Conclusions: The factors of the PAR index had weak association with satisfaction and moderate association with appearance of adult patients after orthodontic treatment in the long term. The PAR Index measures that had more significance were those related to the esthetic area. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 12 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P2 ALTERAÇÕES DIMENSIONAIS ESPONTÂNEAS DO ARCO DENTÁRIO INFERIOR EM ADULTOS JOVENS SEM TRATAMENTO ORTODÔNTICO Universidade Federal do Pará – UFPA Autores: Castro MLSS*, Pontes LF, Normando D. Spontaneous dimensional changes of the lower arch for young adults with orthodontic treatment. This study evaluates the changes of spontaneous alignment of the lower dental arch and its dimensions, using a longitudinal study in young adults without orthodontic treatment. Twenty pairs of plaster’s models of the lower arch were obtained in two stages. In the first test, subjects had an average age of 20.25 years, while in the second test, the average age was 31.2 years. The results indicate a significant reduction of the dimensions of the arc, in the inter-canine width (P = 0.0089), in the length of the right (P = 0.001) and left arch (P <0.001), in the inter-molars width (P = 0.022), which resulted in an increase Little irregularity index (P <0.0010). Changes in the Little Index showed no statistically significant association with changes in arch dimensions, and cannot be predicted from the severity by the end of the second life decade (P = 0.5051). The results suggest that the post-growth maturation process of the lower arch leads to a reduction of the dimensions of the arch and a mild significant increase of the crowding, even in individuals without orthodontic treatment. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 13 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P3 A HABILIDADE DE ORTODONTISTAS E CIRURGIÕES BUCO-MAXILO-FACIAIS EM PREDIZER A ERUPÇÃO DOS TERCEIROS MOLARES INFERIORES Associação Brasileira de Odontologia- Seção PA Autores: Oliveira JFCB*, Bastos AC, Mello KFR, Leão PB. The ability of maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists to predict the eruption of mandibular third molars. Aim: The aim of this paper was to evaluate the ability of maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists to predict the eruption of mandibular third molars. Materials and methods: seventeen panoramic radiographs of orthodontically treated patients, nonextraction cases, ranging from 11 to 17 years old. The radiographs were digitalized and presented along with a questionnaire to 56 professionals, who were 28 orthodontists and 28 oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Then they were requested to express their opinions on how to proceed toward the right and left mandibular third molars. In a follow up clinic and radiographic evaluation, when the patients were over 18, the total eruption of all third molars (n=34) included in the sample was attested. A radiograph was doubled in order to evaluate the error of the method. Findings: An excellent reliability was observed between maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists (Kappa= 0.76; p<0.0001). The intra-group reliability was also excellent to orthodontists (Kappa= 0.96) and surgeons (Kappa= 0.83). Extraction was the decision for 49,6% of the surgeons and 61,6% for orthodontists (p<0.0001). Nevertheless, both experts suggested a considerable number of extractions, proving to be unable to predict the eruption of the mandibular third molar. Conclusion: Orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons are not able to predict the eruption of mandibular third molars. Consequently, they tend to indicate unnecessary extractions. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 14 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P4 ANÁLISE DA MORFOLOGIA FACIAL DE POPULAÇÕES INDÍGENAS DO VALE MÉDIO DO XINGU Universidade Federal do Pará Autores: Almeida SC*, Barbosa MS, Quintão C, Normando ADC. Facial morphology analysis of indigenous people from middle xingu valley Objective: To evaluate comparatively the characteristics of indigenous face morphology from the Middle Xingu Valley. Methods: The sample was composed of 106 indigenous, in permanent dentition, belonging to villages Arara-Laranjal (n=35), Arara-Iriri (n=20), Xicrin-Kaiapó (n=24) and Assurini (n=27). We analyzed 14 facial measurements obtained from standardized frontal and profile photographs. The comparison between groups was performed using ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test and the sexual dimorphism for each village was analyzed by Student´s t test or Mann-Whitney at p<0.05. The homogeneity within and between groups was examined throug the discriminan analysis. Results: Significant diferences were found among the males and females indigenous in all villages. Through the discriminant analysis was observed a large intertribal heterogeneity of face features, at the same time that na intratribal homogeneity was found, mainly for females individuals. Some morphological characteristics of the face are specific to certain groups, regardless the ethnicity. Conclusion: Indigenous populations have morphological characteristics of the face that allow to discriminate each investigated group. Cephalometric Evaluation of Naso and Oropharyngeal Space in Patients with Different Types of Atypical Swallowing Knowing the importance of the upper airway for a normal breath and hence for the skull and face growth development, it’s important to know how and how much the pharyngeal space grows. Thus, this study was developed to evaluate the growth of the upper airways through radiographs. This study aimed to evaluate the growth of the upper airways through radiographs as to verify whether changes would occur in the pharyngeal space in patients with different atypical swallowing patterns, which is defined by the position of the tongue in the oral cavity, which may be high, medium or low. This study involved lateral cranial radiography (45 images: 15 for each type of atypical deglutition) taken from patients aged 6 to 10 years, both genders. Cephalometrically was measured in four linear measurements: Pa-Pp and Su-In, order to evaluate the nasopharyngeal space, and Oa-Op and Ma-Mp, to the oropharynx. After collecting the data, they were statistically evaluated by means of average values in order to verify possible differences between different atypical swallowing patterns. Occlusal and Facial Features in Amerindians: Revisiting the role of genetics and environment. Objective: To analyze facial and occlusal characteristics of three villages from the middle valley of the Xingu River and compare them with two other villages previously published. The hypothesis of genetic versus dietary influence on dentition and facial features was tested, through the analysis of these populations. Methodology: The sample examined was composed of 351 individuals from villages Arara-Iriri (n=46), Arara-Laranjal (n=130), Assurini (n=87), Pat-krô (n=57) e Pikayaká (n=31). Prevalence and descriptive differences in the outcomes frequency were compared using the chi-square test or Fisher’s exact statistic. All the statistics were performed using two-tailed distribution at p≤ 0.05. Results: We found a striking difference in occlusal patterns and face morphology between the villages. The prevalence of malocclusion ranged from 66.7% to 33.8%. The malocclusion was more prevalent in villages Pat-Kro (66.7%), Arara-Iriri (63%) and Assurini (60.9%), while the normal occlusion was more prevalent in villages Arara-Laranjal (66.2%, p <0.001). Conclusion: Ameridindias do not present a unique dentofacial pattern, since the intergroups variability seems to be the rule, even in groups from the same ethnicity. Our findings, supported in studies in the field of genetics, tooth wear and feeding habits of these populations, refute the role of the environment as the primary etiological factor of dental malocclusion and facial morphology discrepancies. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 24 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P14 CORTICOTOMIA ALVEOLAR SELETIVA NO MECANISMO DE INTRUSÃO DE MOLARES: ANÁLISE DE PARÂMETROS CLÍNICOS PERIODONTAIS Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia - UESB Autores: Pithon MM*, Souza MLH, Soares RV, Zenóbio EG, Oliveira DD. Selective Alveolar Corticotomy In Intrusion Of Molars: Analysis Of Periodontal Clinical Parameters Objective: To evaluate the impact of selective alveolar corticotomy associated with orthodontic intrusion on periodontal clinical parameters of extruded maxillary first molars. Materials and Methods: 14 individuals with extruded maxillary molars were randomly selected to undergo corticotomy as coadjuvant therapy for intrusion. Before and after intrusion the following periodontal clinical parameters were evaluated: Probing depth, periodontal recession, clinical attachment level, keratinized mucosa strip and gingival margin thickness. In addition, the quantity of intrusion obtained was measured. The data obtained were statistically analyzed (Wilcoxon or Student’s-t test for paired samples). Results: after intrusion, a significant increase was observed in palatine periodontal recession (p = 0.034), significant reduction in vestibular periodontal recession (p = 0.016), and in gain of attachment in the vestibular region (p = 0.041) of the intruded molars. The remaining clinical parameters evaluated underwent no statistically significant changes (p>0.05). In addition, intrusion of all the teeth was obtained (mean 2.26 ± 0.52 mm). Conclusions: In the present study the absence of clinical compromise of the periodontal parameters could be observed, bearing in mind that the increase in palatine periodontal recession does not lead to loss of attachment in this region; in addition to reduction in vestibular periodontal recession for gain of attachment in this region, and obtainment of adequate intrusion in a short period of time. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 25 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P15 EFEITO DA TERAPIA MIOFUNCIONAL NAS FUNÇÕES OROFACIAIS APÓS CIRURGIA ORTOGNÁTICA Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba – Universidade Estadual de Campinas (FOP-UNICAMP) Autores: Prado DGA*, Migliorucci RR, Nary Filho H, Gavião MBD, Berretin-Felix G Effect of myofunctional therapy in the oral functions after orthognathic surgery Objective: To investigate the effect of miofuncional therapy (MT) in orofacial functions of subjects undergoing Orthognathic Surgery (OS). Factors related to orthodontic treatment time in adult patients Orthodontic treatment of adult patients has a great variability in the time required for its completion. Objective and methods: In order to evaluate factors influencing the duration of treatment in adults, were examined 70 clinical cases with class I or II malocclusion, obtained from the initial examination of 4700 records, collected in three experienced orthodontists clinics. The influence of the variables collected in the documentation of patients on treatment time - dependent variable, was assessed by multiple linear regression analysis, followed by the stepwise method at p <0.05. Results: The number of months without being accompanied by faults (R2 = 14.4%, P = 0.0037) and the number of appliance breakages (R2 29.71%, p = 0.0001) had a significant influence on the variation of treatment time. Other factors, such as initial canine relationship, the use of metal or ceramic brackets, orthodontic extractions included in the planning, age at start of treatment, the PAR index at the beginning of treatment, the patient’s sex and facial pattern had no significant influence on treatment time (p> 0.05). The analysis of all factors allowed the prediction of only 54.33% of the variation in treatment time. Conclusion: We conclude, therefore, that the duration of orthodontic treatment in adults, when performed by experienced orthodontists, is mainly influenced by factors associated with the patient’s collaboration. Lingual Orthodontics: Case report Objective: To describe a case of lingual orthodontics and compare results of the final leveling phase with those planned at setup model before the beginning of the treatment. Description of clinical case: The patient characteristics were: permanent dentition, mesofacial biotype, Class I malocclusion, moderate crowding, tooth # 12 crossbite, mandibular incisors mildly tipped buccally and soft tissue harmony. The treatment plan included interproximal reduction to align teeth and avoid buccal tipping, so as to prevent any possible negative effect on soft tissue harmony. Plaster models were obtained, and the setup was built manually to evaluate whether planning was adequate. After plan confirmation, indirect bonding and customization of the brackets were prepared on the setup model. The first phase of the treatment comprised interproximal teeth reduction and leveling with individualized arch wires, both according to planned setup model. When the leveling phase was completed, dental results were compared with the ideal setup model by intermolar and intercanine distances, overbite, overjet, arch depth and occlusion analysis. Conclusions: Teeth position and occlusion at the end of leveling phase were similar to those planned at setup model, which suggests that this may be a useful tool for planning, indirect bonding and customization of both brackets and leveling arch wire in cases of lingual orthodontics. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 36 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P26 PERCEPÇÃO ESTÉTICA DE ESPAÇOS NEGROS ENTRE INCISIVOS SUPERIORES POR INDIVÍDUOS DE DIFERENTES FAIXAS ETÁRIAS Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia – UESB Autores: Andrade CSS*, Sant’Anna LIDA, Barretto JR, Rocha JO, Brasil RVG,Weberling LB, Paixão JVB, Coqueiro RS, Pithon MM. To evaluate the degree of esthetics, a scale of attractiveness was used, in which a score of 0 would represent ‘’hardly attractive’’, 5 ‘’attractive’’ and 10 ‘’very attractive’’. Results: Results showed that the photographs without black space and with black space of 2.5 mm were scored as the most and least attractive, respectively, by all the age groups. The degree of perception of black spaces between maxillary incisors gradually diminished as the age of the groups increased (p<0.05). Conclusions: Black spaces have a negative repercussion on smile esthetics. The larger the black space, the less attractive the smile. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 37 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ORTO-P27 PERFIL ATUAL DO ENSINO DA DISCIPLINA DE ORTODONTIA NA CLINICA ODONTOLOGICA INFANTIL DA UFPA Universidade Federal Do Pará Autores: Brandão AMM*, Brandão GAM, Blagitz MN, Sinimbú CMB, Flório FM. Orthodontic traction of Impacted Upper Central Incisors: Case Report. The impaction of permanent teeth is highly prevalent in our population. Its etiology is associated with general and local factors. The eruption of these teeth there are consequences when occlusion and involves anterior teeth also causes great disfigurement, which end up being related to psychological problems such as low self-esteem. Among the etiologic factors include: changes embryological development of the tooth germ; pathologies such as supernumerary teeth and odontoma; mechanical factors, such as lack of space and alkalosis, chewing less intense and traumas. In these cases, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important for better resolution of the problem from the point of view of functional and aesthetic. Orthodontics associated with surgical procedures has achieved satisfactory results in the treatment of impacted teeth. The purpose of this study is to report the case of a nine year old with two incisors withheld because of odontoma in the anterior -superior maxilla. Assessment of Oral Health Care in Children with Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 Objective: This study evaluated the oral health care offered to children with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) in the primary dentition. For that, it was selected at the Ambulatory of Diabetes from IPPMG/ UFRJ children with DM1 who were in the primary dentition. The guardians were interviewed about oral hygiene, diet habits and dental treatment offered to the children. Oral examination was performed to determine the dfm-t index. A total of 23 children aging between 2 and 6 (3.83±1.11) years old composed the sample. In spite of 87% of the guardians have affirmed that the children’s oral hygiene is performed and 61% have been oriented by the doctor to search for dental care, 40% of the children has never been to dentist. From those who have visited the dentist, tooth pain and presence of dental cavities were the most common reasons to look for treatment. The restorative treatment was the dental procedure performed in the major of the children, reflecting on the dmf-t which varied from 3 to 20 (11±5.8). Even with the possibility of free dental treatment next to place the children have appointments regularly to the DM1 treatment, 40% of the guardians did not accept the dental treatment offered. The oral health influences positively the general health of children with DM1 but little attention has been given to promotion of oral health. It is necessary greater elucidation to the guardians about the importance of oral care to promote oral health and improve the quality of life of these children. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 45 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-FC3 DESEMPENHO DE MÉTODOS PARA DETECÇÃO DE LESÕES DE CÁRIES PROXIMAIS EM MOLARES DECÍDUOS - ESTUDO IN VIVO. Forty-five children aged between 5 and 9 years who had primary molars with signs suggestive of the presence of caries or sound. The surfaces (n=59) were evaluated clinically and coded according to Nyvad criteria, and DDPen. The radiographic examination was performed only in those teeth scored with Nyvad criteria 2, 3, 5 or 6. Caries active and/or discontinued surface were restored, and the lesions’s depth after cavity preparation was used for validation. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and area under the ROC curve were calculated for each method, considering lesions in enamel and dentin ( D1 ) and only dentin lesions ( D2 ). Visual examination with the Nyvad criteria showed the highest specificity (0.95 in D1 and D2 in 0.93 ), accuracy ( 0.94 in D1 and D2 ), and area under the ROC curve ( 0.90 and 0.95 in D1 to D2 ), while DDPen showed the highest sensitivity ( 0.97 and 0.96 in D1 to D2). Although the performance of radiographic examination and DDpen have been good, the use of visual examination with NYVAD criteria was sufficient for the diagnosis of interproximal caries lesions in primary molars. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 46 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-FC4 EFEITO DO TRIMETAFOSFATO DE SÓDIO NANOPARTICULADO ADICIONADO A DENTIFRÍCIOS COM CONCENTRAÇÃO REDUZIDA DE FLUORETO SOBRE A DESMINERALIZAÇÃO DO ESMALTE DENTAL IN VITRO Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba – UNESP Autores: Pessan JP*, Cruz NVS, de Souza MDB, Nagata ME, Delbem ACB. Effect of nanosized sodium trimetaphosphate added to low-fluoride dentifrices on enamel demineralization in vitro Objective: To assess the effect of the concentration and particle size of sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) on enamel demineralization when associated to low-fluoride dentifrices in vitro. Methodology: Bovine enamel blocks (4x4 mm) were analyzed by surface hardness (SH) and randomly divided into 12 groups (n=12/group) according to the dentifrices tested: Placebo (P), 500 µg F/g (500), 500 µg F/g associated to TMP at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5 and 3.0% with particles of conventional size (TMPc), or crushed in a ball mill for 24h (TMP24) or 48h (TMP48), besides a positive control (1,100 µg F/g). Blocks were submitted to 5 pH cycles (37 ºC) and treated twice/day (1 min) with slurries of the above-mentioned dentifrices. After the determination of final SH, the percentage of SH loss (%SHL) was calculated and data were submitted to ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls’ test (p<0.05). Results: A dose-response relationship was observed between %SHL and fluoride concentration in the dentifrices without TMP. However, the lowest values of %SHL were observed for 500/TMPc 3.0%, 500/TMP24 0.5% and 500/TMP 48 0.25%, without significant differences among them. Conclusions: The supplementation of dentifrices containing 500 µg F/g with TMP leads to a more effective reduction of %SHL when compared with a 1,100 µg F/g dentifrice. In situ effect of Recaldent® containing chewing gum at different stages of human enamel erosion Objective: This study evaluated the in situ effect of an chewing gum containing Recaldent® in different stages of dental erosion. Methods: Studied groups: GWR Trident Total® (with Recaldent®) GNR Trident Fresh® (no Recaldent®) and GC control (no gum). In the 1st step 72 human enamel blocks were selected by the hardness and were eroded in vitro (Coke®, 3 min - hardness evaluation). Twelve volunteers wore intraoral palatal devices for 24h in 3 crossover phases. In GWR and GNR volunteers chewed the gum for 30 minutes, 4 times in 24h. The hardness was assessed after 2 and 24h to calculate the percentage of surface hardness recovery. In the 2nd step (3 crossover phases of 7 days) 48 healthy blocks were randomized between groups and eight volunteers wore palatal devices which were immersed in 150ml of Coke® for 5 min, followed by a chewing gum for 30 min in GWR and GNR, 4x/day. Enamel alterations were measured by profilometry and analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey. Results: In the 1st step GWR (2h/50.0%; 24h/95.9%) showed higher hardness recovery compared to GNR (2h/30.0%; 24h/71.1%) and GC (2h/15.7%; 24h/40.9%) (p<0.05). In the 2nd step GWR (5.2 ± 2.8 µm) and CNR (3.8 ± 1.5 µm) significantly reduced tooth wear compared to GC (6.8 ± 3.5 µm), with no differences between the chewing gums (p>0.05). Conclusions: Recaldent® chewing gum increases remineralization of erosive lesions, but it is not able to enhance enamel protection against the erosive challenge. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 48 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-FC6 INTEGRAÇÃO DAS DISCIPLINAS ODONTOPEDIATRIA E ORTODONTIA NO ENSINO DE GRADUAÇÃO EM ODONTOLOGIA NO BRASIL São Leopoldo Mandic Campinas Autores: Reis JB*, Pordeus IA, Raggio DP, Imparato JCP, Bonini GC. Crescer Sorrindo/UERJ Project: integrating teaching, research and extension for 12 years Abstract: Children can be affected by various dental problems such as dental caries, malocclusion and dental trauma. These dental problems can have a negative impact on children’s lives and on their families’. For that reason, it is important to prevent them. Nevertheless, when they occur, they need to be promptly addressed in order to limit impairment on children´s quality of life. “Crescer Sorrindo” project is an excellent opportunity for integrating theory and practice within pediatric dentistry. Due to its multidisciplinary focus, the project enables students and teachers to obtain a holistic view of the pediatric patient. “Crescer Sorrindo” has been developed by the School of Dentistry/UERJ, at Piquet Carneiro Polyclinic, since 2001. The aim of the project is to promote the oral health of children up to 11 years of age through educational, preventive and restorative activities and to emphasize dental care for preschoolers. In 12 years, approximately 530 preschoolers have received dental care and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate pediatric dentistry students have been involved. In addition, the project carries out scientific research in the field of children’s oral health. Thus, the “Crescer Sorrindo” project has been promoting children´s oral health, for the last 12 years, by integrating teaching, research and extension. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 50 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-FC8 PROMOÇÃO DA SAÚDE ORAL NA PRIMEIRA INFÂNCIA: IDADE DE INGRESSO EM PROGRAMAS PREVENTIVOS E ASPECTOS COMPORTAMENTAIS Faculdade de Odontologia de Araraquara - Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - FOAr - UNESP Autores: Lemos LVFM*, Myaki SI, Walter LRF, Zuanon ACC. Apoio: CAPES Promoting oral health in early childhood: age of joining the preventive program and behavioral aspects Objective: This cross-sectional study was to analyze the level of interference of age when joining a dental care program in children from 0 to 48 months, who attended a dental care preventive government program in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, named ‘Dentistry for babies’ and the behavioral aspects about the children dental caries experience. A sample of 465 children were assigned into three groups: Babies whose mothers joined the program when still pregnant (n=50); Babies that joined the program during the first year of life (n=230); and Children that joined the program between 13 and 18 months (n=185). The Chi-Square and Kruskal-Walis tests (IC95%) assessed the relationship between the variables. It was observed that there was an association between group and dental caries (p<0.001), being the smaller prevalence for G0 and G1. Similarly, it was found association between the children’s age when joining the program with assiduity, cariogenic diet, oral night hygiene, duration of night feeding and parents’ educational level, children’s behavior through out the treatment, at home or at the office (p<0.001). Low socio-economic background (p>0.05) and day oral hygiene (p=0.214) were common variables in the groups with 99% of occurrence. Assiduity, night oral hygiene presence and parents’ level of education variables were protection factors for dental caries. Cariogenic diet and night feeding were determinant factors for dental caries. It was concluded that in order to promote children’s oral health it is essential that children join the program earlier in life, assiduity and the children and parents’ positive behavior. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 51 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-FC9 RESPOSTA PULPAR APÓS O USO DO LASER DE BAIXA INTENSIDADE EM PULPOTOMIAS DE DENTES DECÍDUOS HUMANOS Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru - Universidade de São Paulo (FOB-USP) Autores: Marques NCT*, Mello BZF, Fernandes AP, Lourenço Neto N, Machado MAAM, Oliveira TM. Pulpal response after using the low-level laser therapy on pulpotomy of human primary teeth Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate through clinical, radiographic and histological analyses the effects ofLow-Level Laser therapy (LLLT)on pulpal response of human primary teeth after pulpotomy. Twenty mandibular primary molars of children aged between 6 and 9 years were selected. The teeth were randomly divided into the following groups: Buckley’s Formocresol (diluted 1: 5) (GI), Calcium Hydroxide (GII), LLLT + Zinc Oxide and (GIII), and LLLT + Calcium Hydroxide (GIV), and treated by the pulpotomy technique. The clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed at 3 and 6 post-operative months. The teeth in the normal exfoliation period were extracted and processed for histological analysis and assessed through a score system. The clinical and radiographic results did not show statistically significant difference among groups (p>0.05). The statistical analysis of the histological assessment revealed statistically significant difference for pulpal inflammation, with the least degree of pulpal inflammation for group GIV. The group GII showed a higher rate of formation of mineralized tissue barrier, odontoblastic layer and dense collagen fibers. The group GI showed higher incidence of internal resorption. The results obtained indicated that the group GIV showed more satisfactory effects compared to other groups. Therefore, it is suggested that Low-Level Laser therapy with Calcium Hydroxide can be considered as an alternative technique for the pulpotomy of human primary teeth. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 52 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-FC10 USO DA MAMADEIRA E MÁ OCLUSÃO NA DENTIÇÃO PERMANENTE: REVISÃO SISTEMÁTICA E META-ANÁLISE Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Autores: Martins CC*; Zina LG, Paiva SM, Pordeus IA. Bottle feeding and malocclusion in permanent dentition: systematic review and meta-analysis Objective: To search for scientific evidence on the association between a history of breastfeeding compared to bottle feeding and risk of malocclusion in the permanent dentition. Methods: An electronic search was performed in seven databases with no restrictions regarding language or year of publication. Data were extracted on type of feeding habits (breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding) and duration of breastfeeding (< 6 months vs. ≥ 6 months). Relative risk measures and confidence intervals were described. Results: The systematic review included four studies (3 cross-sectional and 1 casecontrol). When malocclusion was evaluated using clinical data, bottle feeding was associated to increased mean protrusion of the maxillary and mandibular incisors as well as mean inclination of the maxillary incisors (OR: 1.464; 95% CI: 1.091-1.965). However, facial profile was not associated with the duration of breast feeding (OR: 0.885; 95% CI: 0.462-1.695). However, there were few studies and substantial heterogeneity among them. Conclusions: The scientific evidence suggests a weak association between bottle feeding and malocclusion in the permanent dentition. More prospective cohort studies are needed to confirm the evidence. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 53 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria Modalidade Poster ODTP-P1 ADAPTAÇÃO MARGINAL DA INTERFACE ADESIVA ENTRE PINOS DE FIBRA DE VIDRO E DENTINA RADICULAR DE DENTES DECÍDUOS APÓS 6 MESES DE DEGRADAÇÃO Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba - Universidade Estadual de Campinas Autores: Iwamoto AS*, Hosoya Y, Puppin-Rontani RM, PasconFM Marginal adaptation between glass fiber post and primary root dentin after 6 month degradation Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of filling materials andcleaning agents in marginal adaptation between glass fiber post and root canaldentin after 6 month degradation. Roots of primary bovine teeth wereendodontically treated and assigned into groups: Control (no material - C);Calen® + Zinc Oxide (CZO); Vitapex® (V); Calcipex II® (CP). After 7 days, fillingmaterials were removed and the roots were subdivided according the groups(n=10): No cleaning (NC); 70% Ethanol (E); Tergenform® (T). Glass fiber posts were luted using resin cement RelyXTMARC after acid etching, rinsing and application of adhesive system. Specimens were sectioned (±1 mm) and water storage for 6 month. After this period, they were polished and replicas were made. Images obtained by scanning electron microscopy were measured usingthe software Image J 1.45 to calculate the gap formation percentage (%G). Thedata were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α=5%). Interaction was not observed between the studied factors (p<0.05). Significant difference was observed for filling materials (p<0.01) and cleaning agents (p<0.05). COZ showed the lowest %G (41.90±21.45), significantly different from C(62.23±19.59). Objective: This study evaluated the long-term influence of the addition of chlorhexidinediacetate (CHX) at different concentrations to a high-viscosity GIC on its adhesion to sound and cariesaffected dentin. Sixty third molars were divided into 6 groups (n = 10) according to the condition of the substrate (sound and caries-affected dentine) and concentration of CHX added to the GIC (GIC + CHX 1% and 2% CHX), and GIC without CHX was used as control. Dentin flat surfaces were produced and half of them was subjected to artificial induction of caries. In each dentin surface of two specimens of the same material (1 mm in diameter and 1 mm in height) was made. They were kept at 37 °C with 100% humidity for 24 hours or immersed in distilled water for 6 months and tested for microshear. Bond strength data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α= 0.05). In sound dentin, GIC and GIC + CHX 1 % bond strength was statistically similar and higher than the GIC + CHX 2 % and there was no significant difference between immediate and six months analysis. In caries-affected dentin, GIC and GIC + CHX 1% showed bond strength statistically superior to GIC + CHX 2% in the immediate analysis. At six months analysis there was no difference between the groups, and GIC + CHX 2% was the only group in which bond strength didn’t reduce. The high pH of the saliva would be required to maintain the appropriate medium for the multiplicity of enzymes that are present, playing a remarkable role in protecting teeth against tooth decay. This literature review aimed to discuss the mechanisms by which the CA VI in saliva and biofilm acts in the buffering of acids present in the oral environment as well as the scientific evidence on the relationship between the expression/activity of CA VI in saliva or plaque and caries experience. The buffer effect of isoenzyme derives from the fact that CA VI catalyze the reversible reaction of carbon dioxide in the reaction CO2 + H2O ↔ H + + HCO3-. Furthermore, the CA VI is adsorbed on the tooth surface remaining enzymatically active. The analysis of the literature shows conflicting results between the concentration of CA VI in saliva/plaque and caries experience. Furthermore, there is evidence that a high concentration of CA VI saliva/biofilm may not necessarily mean that all isoenzyme is active and thus capable of neutralizing the acid after a cariogenic challenge. There are no reports on the possible relationship between the concentration and activity of AC VI in saliva and dental plaque. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 57 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P5 APARELHO MANTENEDOR DE ESPAÇO COLADO: UMA ALTERNATIVA PARA PERDA PRECOCE DE DENTES DECÍDUOS - RELATO DE CASO CLÍNICO Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic Autores: Lamarão MCM*, Vilhena DHM, Almeida JT, Vasconcelos AA, Girão DC, Moura BF, Bonini GC Appliance space maintainer glued: an alternative to early loss of deciduous teeth - Clinical Case Report Abstract: The early loss of primary teeth can cause a lot of harm, leaving sequelae that unbalance physiology of the oral cavity. The space maintainers are devices that can be used when a primary tooth is lost prematurely in order to preserve the integrity of the occlusion, keep teeth involved in their respective positions, to preserve space resulting from the premature loss of deciduous teeth and allow the permanent tooth erupcione in normal position. The following work aims to present the case of a 7 year old, male white, convex profile, mixed dentition, Class I molar relationship, whose chief complaint was “stuck tooth” (according to information gathered). On clinical examination, there was an open cavity in the second lower right deciduous molar (85) and fistula. The element has undergone endodontic treatment, having unsatisfactory biological response. We opted for the element extraction and subsequent installation of a space maintainer appliance glued (AMEC), to wait for the eruption of permanent fixture. The maintainer of this selection was made on the basis of their properties, because it has advantages such as low cost, ease of preparation, good resistance, easy to clean and does not require laboratory phase and is indicated in cases of early loss of a single element dental later. According to the established schedule for the case in question, was performed prior to extraction molding for obtaining model and fabrication of orthodontic wire loop with 0.7. To install the maintainer etching was done with 37% phosphoric acid in the vestibular region 46 of the element 84 and, after 15 seconds acid was removed by washing with water while application of the product, then application was made Single Bond and curing light for 20 seconds, then by inserting the composite Filtek Z250 buccal teeth mentioned above, and subsequently positioning the bent wire on the resin and curing for 40 seconds. The unit should be kept until the eruption of the tooth successor. Thus, it can be concluded that the AMEC can be a viable option for cases of early loss of deciduous molars and can obtain satisfactory results and success. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 58 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P6 APLICAÇÃO DE MATERIAIS RESINOSOS COMO MEDIDA PREVENTIVA EM ESMALTE INICIALMENTE ERODIDO, SUBMETIDO A DESAFIO EROSIVO – ESTUDO IN VITRO Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru - Universidade de São Paulo (USP) Autores: Oliveira GC*, Boteon AP, Ferrairo BM, Gonçalves PSP, Alencar CRB, Honório HM, Rios D. Conclusion: After degradation in CF, Z350 showed higher Δbrightness when polished by SL; Vitlescence hasn’t presented Δbrightness. Therefore, in this study the brightness of the composite was dependent on the solution, the material and the polishing system. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 69 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P17 AVALIAÇÃO IN VITRO DA LIBERAÇÃO DE ÍONS FLUORETO DE VERNIZES EM DIFERENTES SOLUÇÕES Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba - FOP/Unicamp Autores: Varanda T*, Joaquim NM, Puppin-Rontani RM, PasconFM In vitro fluoride release analysis of fluoride varnishes in different solutions Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the fluoride ions (F) release in vitro of 3 fluoride varnishes submitted to demineralization (DES) and remineralization (RE) solutions, as a function of time. For this, it was used polyester strips that received a standardized thin layer of varnishes. The procedure was performed by a trained and calibrated researcher. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups (n=5): Va (Vanish™-NaF varnish with 5% Tri-Calcium Phosphate), DR (Duraflur -varnish 5% NaF) and DP (Duraphat®-varnish 5% NaF) and 2 solutions: DES and RE. The specimens were individually immersed in 10 mL of each solution for 1, 3, 7, 24, 48, 72 and 120 hours, and changed in pre-established times. The determination of F release in the solutions was performed in duplicate, using a potentiometer (Orion Expandable Ion Analyzer 940 EA), which was expressed in mV and converted into ppm F. Data were submitted to ANOVA factorial and Tukey tests (α=0.05). It was not observed significant interaction among the studied factors: material, time and solutions (p>0.05). VA (0.693) released more F when compared to DR (0.624) and DP (0.565) (p<0.05). The highest concentration of F was observed in 72 (0.955) hours, with a significant difference for all times (p<0.05). Regarding solutions, the highest fluoride release it was observed for DES compared to RE. It could be concluded that the fluoride varnishes showed different fluoride release patterns, with highest release in 72 hours and for demineralization solution. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 70 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P18 A CÁRIE PRECOCE DA INFÂNCIA E SEUS REFLEXOS NA SAÚDE SISTÊMICA Universidade Federal do Maranhão Autores: Ribeiro CCC*, Silva MCB, Nunes AMM, Lula ECO Early Childhood Caries and Systemic Health Objective: To discuss about early childhood caries (ECC) and systemic health, presenting data analysis from two studies in children under 71 months that showed association of markers of nutritional deficits and markers of chronic diseases with ECC. The first study was a retrospective cohort study with 625 children in Sao Luis, which showed through a hierarchical approach that low height/age ( p = 0.019 ), and lower levels of hemoglobin ( p < 0.000 ), albumin ( p = 0.016 ) and zinc (p =.052 ) were associated with ECC. In the second study, using data from NHANES III (1988-1994), through Poisson regression analysis adjusting for confounders (ethnicity, gender, body mass index and Health Eating Index ), it was showed that a greater number of caries in children seems associated with markers of chronic diseases such as elevated C-reactive protein levels (PR 2: 09 IC 1.3, 3.2) and insulin resistance (PR 1.7 CI 1.1, 3.1), which are markers of cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes, respectively. The results of these studies suggest that caries severity in childhood may be a predictor of the presence of more serious systemic conditions. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 71 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P19 BULLYING, ODONTOPEDIATRIA E ORTODONTIA: RELATO DE CASO Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul Autores: Modesto KBS*, D’Angelo V, Almeida ER Bullying, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics: case report Objective: The term bullying can be defined by the act of assaulting, stalking, or exclude someone for a time and began to be researched in the 1990s, because the intensity of events related. This study aims to report the clinical case of a patient 6 years old, male, reporting episode of bullying in school, attributed to the positioning of the anterior teeth. The diagnosis and treatment plan were developed by professional pediatric dentistry and orthodontics together. After the clinical pediatric dentistry, began orthodontic treatment, with monitoring conducted by booth professionals. After the first results, the patient reported changes in the behavior of classmates without the involvement of “mocking “ regarding their appearance and smile. Parents emphasized the positive change in school and daily life of the child. After these initial changes, the patient began to smile more often and express himself more naturally. Observing the positive reactions, we conclude that a child’s behavior may be related to the appearance of their teeth and their personal relationships, especially in the school environment. This case draws attention to the importance of pediatric dentistry and orthodontists, acting together, to provide a broader treatment to the child, allowing a better quality of life. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 72 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P20 COMPARAÇÃO DA MICRODUREZA DO ESMALTE DE DENTES DECÍDUOS DE CRIANÇAS NORMORREATIVAS E COM PARALISIA CEREBRAL Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul - UNICSUL Autores: Campos PH*, Andrade RSL, Rojas PL, Ferreira MCD, Santos MTBR, Guaré RO, Diniz MB Comparison of enamel microhardness of primary teeth of cerebral palsy and normorreactive children Objective: To compare in vitro the enamel microhardness of anterior and posterior primary teeth of normorreactive children (NR) and children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methodology: The sample was consisted of 58 exfoliated/extracted primary teeth of NR and CP children, aged between 5 and 12 years, which were distributed into 4 groups: (A) anterior teeth of CP (n= 14), (B) anterior teeth of NR (n=16),(C) posterior teeth of CP (n=14) and (D) posterior teeth of NR (n=14). The objective was to evaluate the association between overweight/obesity and masticatory performance (MP) and salivary amylase and total protein (TP) concentrations in 81 children, 6-10 years, divided into two groups: overweight/obese (n=35) and normal-weight (n=46). On clinical examination, the absence of dental caries and the need for orthodontic treatment were verified. MP was evaluated by the individual’s ability to comminute a chewable test material for determining the median particle size (X50) and distribution of particles in the different sieves (“b”). Salivary samples were collected over two days, 4 times/day, for the determination of amylase and TP area under the curve (AUC). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and “t” test/ Mann-Whitney test. A multiple logistic regression model was used to verify the association between overweight/obesity and the studied variables, controlling for confounders. X50, amylase-ASC and TP-ASC did not differ between groups. An association between overweight/obesity with highest “b” was observed, that is, their particles were retained in the larger aperture sieves (OR=2.59, CI=1.036.51, p=0.027). Overweight/obesesubjects were more likely to present chewed particles retained in the larger aperture sieves, consequently requiring more chewing cycles to break down the test material in smaller particles. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 74 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P22 CORPO ESTRANHO EM MADEIRA NA ÓRBITA DE CRIANÇAS: RELATO DE DOIS CASOS COM DIFERENTES PADRÕES DE IMAGENS TOMOGRÁFICAS. The aim of this study was to report two cases of foreign bodies in the orbit of wood two male children, that because of the trauma conditions, showed different patterns of tomographic image. In the first case, a 11 year old suffered a fall tree and presented an injury infra -orbital on the right side. When performing CT scan was been a hypodensity in the region. In the second case, the patient 3 years fell from a wooden bridge over a mangrove area, and injured the medial left orbit. The computed tomography (CT ) performed hyperdense, which may be due to contamination with other materials such as sand, mangrove, which were on the wooden splinter that hit the child. Both patients were treated surgically with removal of foreign body. There were no injuries to bone structures and both had postoperative infection, treated with antibiotics. The postoperative course was satisfactory and without visual deficits. Abstract: Green teeth are an uncommon condition. This anomaly usually represents systemic disorders in pediatric patients. Objective: Presentto the pediatric dentist the systemic disorder that lies behind the green teeth.Case report: we describe a form of tooth pigmentation caused by serum bilirubin deposition during dental calcification and present the levels of bilirubin during the three months after birth when the crown of the deciduous teeth are still forming. Such anomaly does not have symptoms, but it causes a displeasing aspect and great anxiety within the family. Conclusions: The case here reported reassure the relevance of the past medical history and of the exams of prolonged conjugated hyperbilirubinemia to confirm the diagnosis. For this case, no aesthetic treatment had been undertaken because the child was still too young and not yet conditioned. Ninety-four occlusal surfaces presenting ICDAS scores ranging from 0 to 3 were selected. For the NIR-TI examination, images were captured using the NIR-TI prototype, which consists of a laser beam (808 nm) and an infrared CCD camera. One occlusal site on each tooth was assessed twice by two examiners. The teeth were histologically prepared and assessed for early caries presence. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and Az were calculated and McNemar test was applied to compare the values among the methods. Intra and inter examiners repeatability was analyzed using Cohen’s Kappa coefficient. The NIR-TI showed values of sensitivity (0.68), specificity (0.85), accuracy (0.73) and area under ROC curve (0.76), similar those achieved by the fluorescence methods (p>0.05). A high intra examiner repeatability was obtained for the three tested devices. For inter examiners repeatability, the highest values were obtained by DDPen and QLF (0.81 and 0.73 respectively) whereas the NIR-TI system obtained 0.58. The results showed that the performance of the NIR-TI system was similar to DDPen and QLF, and can be a viable technology to aid in early occlusal caries detection. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 77 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P25 DETERMINANTES GENÉTICOS DA HIPOMINERALIZAÇÃO DE MOLAR E INCISIVO Faculdade de Odontologia de Araraquara-UNESP Autores: Jeremias F*, Scarel-Caminaga RM, Pierri RA, Fragelli CM, Souza JF, Restrepo M, Paschoal MA, Küchler EC, Deeley K, Cordeiro RCL, Zuanon ACC, Vieira AR, Santos-Pinto L. Patient, 4 years and 5 months old, male, sought to UFSC Dentistry Clinic reporting difficulty in speech and eating because of injury to the tongue. Clinically there was a presence of an exophytic lesion, located on the right side of the tongue, with lobulated surface, a sessile base with well-defined limits. The parents reported that the child had the habit of nibbling and suck his tongue. The child was submitted to surgical removal of the lesion, and guidance on removing the habit. After the removal of the lesion, the collected material was sent for pathology analysis, where it was confirmed the diagnosis of Pyogenic Granuloma. Due to habit persistence, the lesion recurred after a month and the patient underwent a new surgery with the same histopathological diagnosis. After 12 months follow-up no recurrence of the lesion was found. It was concluded that success of the treatment depends on the surgical removal of Pyogenic granuloma associated with psychological support and cooperation of the patient to remove the habit. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 86 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P34 HIPOPLASIA MOLAR-DECÍDUO ASSOCIADA A HIPOPLASIA MOLAR-INCISIVO: ESTUDO CLINICO EM CRIANÇAS Universidade de São Paulo (USP) - Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru Autores: Barbério GS*, Zingra ACG, Calderan MF, Silva TC, Rios D, Oliveira TM, Santos PSS, Machado MAAM Molar-incisor hypomineralization associated to deciduous molar-hipomineralization: clinic study in children Objective: This study investigated the presence and relationship between molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and deciduous molar hypomineralization (DMH). Material and Methods: One single trained and calibrated examiner examined 379 children with ages ranging from 6 to 10 years old. Full mouth inspection was conducted following the EAPD 2003 criteria for MIH and DMH diagnosis, including canines’ tips in the investigation. Statistical analysis was performed by the use of the Mann-Whitney Rank Sum Test, chi-square test and odds ratio. Results and Discussion: The prevalence was 24.2% for MIH and 12.4% for DMH. The most commonly permanent teeth affected by hypomineralized enamel had been, in descending order: 36, 46, 16 and 26; the least affected had been, also in descending order: 11, 21, 22 and 12. The 4 index deciduous teeth were statistically equally affected. All permanent first molars were affected in 18.4% of the 92 MIH cases, three first molars in 11.9%, two first molars in 28.2% and only one first molar in 15.2% of cases. No teeth had been extracted due to MIH or DMH. Children with DMH had an odds ratio of 4.18 for MIH in comparison to children without DMH. Impact of traumatic dental injuries and malocclusions on quality of life of preschool children Objective: Assess the impact of traumatic dental injuries (LDT) and malocclusions on quality of life related to oral health (OHRQoL) in preschool children in Diadema, Brazil. Methods: 1215 children 1-4 years of both genders were systematically selected during the National Day of Children’s Vaccination in Diadema, SP in 2012. Parents or guardians answered the Brazilian version of the questionnaire ECOHIS (B-ECOHIS) to assess the impact of OHRQoL. Clinical assessments were performed by 19 dentists trained and calibrated by adopting the criteria Glendor (2008) for the diagnosis of LDT and to malocclusion was considered the presence of anterior open bite, anterior crossbite, increased overjet (> 3mm) and posterior crossbite. Poisson regression models adjusted for dental caries (CI 95%) were used to assess the association between LDT, malocclusion, socioeconomic factors considering each domains and the total score of the B-ECOHIS. Results: The multivariate adjusted model of Poisson regression showed an association between some domains of the B-ECOHIS and clinical conditions (p <.05). No association was observed with the presence of LDT and malocclusion in the total score. Only the severity of the LDT (Complicated LDT) showed a negative impact on OHRQoL (RR = 2.10; p = 0.048). Conclusion: The presence of LDT and Malocclusion no showed impact on OHRQoL, but the complicated LDT has a negative impact on OHRQoL in this population. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 88 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P36 IMPACTO NA QUALIDADE DE VIDA E RECUPERAÇÃO DA ESTÉTICA APÓS TRAUMATISMO DENTÁRIO Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Autores: Oliveira LRP*, Soares TRC, Bezerra TM, Queiroz BM, Risso PA, Maia LC Impact on the quality of life and esthetic recovery after dental traumatic injury Objective: The aim of this study was to relate the clinical management in two cases of pediatric patients who suffered dental traumatic injuries and the influence of the dental procedureon the quality of life related to oral health of the patients and their families. After the trauma, the patients were referred to the Dental Traumatology SurveillanceCenter- UFRJ with esthetic complaint and difficulty in socializing due to coronal fracture in the upper central incisors. In the first case, a 12-year-old boy was already 6 month without treatment and it was performed pulpectomy and bonding of the fragment. In the second case, a 8-year-old searched treatment 2 days later the trauma and it was performed pulpotomy with MTA and bonding of the fragment. The assessment on the quality of life was done trough questionnaires (CPQ, P-CPQ and FIS) before and one week later the treatment. The indexes varied in the first case from 32 to 9 in the CPQ (11-14), 42 to 12 in the P-CPQ and 24 to 4 in the FIS, before and after the treatment, respectively. In the second case, from 38 to 20 in the CPQ(0810), 94 to 28 in the P-CPQ and 39 to 10 in the FIS. We concluded that the esthetic recovery through fragment bonding is a rapid and practical solution, especially in children. Beyond that, dental trauma causes impact in the quality of life of the child and the family and the reduction of this impact is already observed one week after the treatment improving welfare of the children. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 89 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P37 IMPLANTES E PRÓTESES EM CRIANÇA COM DISPLASIA ECTODÉRMICA Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina - UFSC Ximenes M*, Triches TC, Souza JGO, Pereira-Neto ARL, Cardoso AC, Bolan M Implant and prosthesis in child with ectodermal dysplasia Objective: The objective of this study is to report a case of oral rehabilitation in a child with Ectodermal Dysplasia. Patient VPS, female, 8 years, sought treatment at the Clinic of Pediatric Dentistry, UFSC, with the chief complaint of “multiple dental absences”. On physical examination, there were observe changes in the development of hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, dry skin, lips were prominent, and the child had a senile appearance. The clinical and radiographic examination showed congenital absence of several primary and permanent teeth. The teeth in the oral cavity had microdontia with high mobility, incomplete root development, and wide pulp chamber. The upper labial frenulum was hypertrophic and showed up with low insertion. The child was with phonetic changes and difficulty of chewing. The oral rehabilitation was accomplished through the installation of an upper dentures and a mandibular implant-supported denture. It can be concluded that the installation of dental implants and dentures in children with Ectodermal dysplasia is a viable alternative for rehabilitative treatment because it is able to improve the masticatory and phonetic functions, rescues self - esteem and enables a better social contacts for the patient. It is worth mentioning the importance of performance monitoring and multidisciplinary professional in order to preserve and restore maximum functional balance and aesthetic before oral conditions imposed by the syndrome. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 90 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P38 INCORPORAÇÃO DE GLUCONATO OU DIACETATO DE CLOREXIDINA A UM CIMENTO DE IONÔMERO DE VIDRO: POROSIDADE E RUGOSIDADE SUPERFICIAL Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP - Faculdade de Odontologia de Araraquara Autores: Marti LM*, Becci ACO, Giro EMA, Brighenti FL, ZuanonACC Incorporation of gluconate or chlorhexidinediacetate to a Glass Ionomer Cement: porosity and surface roughness. Abstract: Among the antibacterial chlorhexidine (CHX) is considered one of the most effective substances and safe. The objective was to evaluate the porosity and surface roughness of a GIC after addition of gluconate or diacetate CHX. Were prepared 10 specimens (n = 10) and randomly assigned into two groups: control C: CIV; G1: GIC and CHX gluconate 0.5%, G2: GIC and CHX gluconate 1.0%, G3: GIC and CHX gluconate 2.0 % D1: GIC and 0.5% CHX diacetate, D2: GIC and 1.0% CHX diacetate and D3: GIC and 2.0% CHX diacetate. The surface roughness was obtained by the arithmetic mean of three readings taken on each specimen and the surface porosity by analysis of photomicrographs in the Image J program Analyses of variance of two factors and Tukey’s test, with significance level of 5%. We observed a significant effect only the square CHX diacetate at all concentrations (p <0.001) on the percentage of area occupied by the pores, increasing it. For the number of pores, a significant decrease was observed in the same CHX diacetate and 1% CHX gluconate 0.5%. There was no significant effect on any of the concentrations for the surface roughness (p> 0,05). It can be concluded that to associate the CHX to the GIC, the best option is to CHX gluconate 1% or 2% because no effect on surface roughness and presented number of pores and the area occupied by them similar GIC in its original form. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 91 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P39 INFLUÊNCIA DAS FUNÇÕES EXECUTIVAS E ATENCIONAIS NO DESENVOLVIMENTO DE CÁRIE EM INDIVÍDUOS COM PARALISIA CEREBRAL Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri Autores: Fernandes IB*, Dourado MR, Oliveira-Ferreira F, Andrade PM, Moreira RN, Ramos-Jorge ML Apoio financeiro: Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de Minas Gerais (Fapemig) Influence of attentional and executive functions in the development of caries in individuals with cerebral palsy Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the existence of an association between attention/executive functions and the development of dental caries in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Seventy-six children with CP were selected from a physical rehabilitation center and a school serving children with disabilities. This paper aimed to report a 02 years follow-up of one patient, 8-year-old with class II malocclusion, that suffered traumatic intrusion type I of her central incisor. The patient was assisted at emergency room Mário Pinotti, Belém, few hours after trauma in 2011. The patient had fallen and hit her permanent upper central incisor on the ground. Her face and upper lip were injured. Upon clinical examination, swelling could be detected and intrusion of tooth 11, and a small incisal fracture of tooth 12 could also be observed. No alterations were observed in the radiographic exam, but immature radicular development was detected. The treatment chosen was to watch and wait for spontaneous re-eruption. After 1 year and 4 months, complete eruption of the tooth was detected. Radiographic examination showed typical radicular formation and almost completely pulp canal and crown obliteration, without apical lesion. In tooth with immature root development, no active treatment appears to result in fewer complications and conserve vital pulp. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 95 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P43 ODONTODISPLASIA REGIONAL: RELATO DE CASO CLÍNICO Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba FOP - UNICAMP Autores: Pacheco LF*, Leme MS, Puppin-Rontani RM, Gavião MBD, Pascon FM Regional odontodysplasia: case report Abstract: This case report describes a longitudinal evaluation and rehabilitation of a pediatric patient with regional odontodysplasia. The dental education of the mother occurs before the baby’s first appointment. The treatment protocol is characterized by three stages: educational lecture for pregnant between the 6th and the 8th gestational month, the first dental appointment of the baby between the 4th and 6th month of life; dental appointment (return every 4 months) until the child reaches 48 months of age. What is the preventive effect of dentifrices on non-cavitated caries lesions?A systematic review Background: Although dental caries have been declining, initials caries lesions may be underestimated and it is not known whether the use of dentifrices in different concentrations is effective in preventing the progression of these lesions. Aim: To determine the efficacy of fluoride dentifrices with different concentrations in the prevention of initial caries lesions in children and adolescents. Methods: Two independent reviewers searched PubMed until 06/2013 to identify papers published in English. The eligibility criteria were: (1) to be a randomised controlled trial or a cluster-randomised trial; (2) to compare standard fluoride toothpaste with placebo or fluoride toothpaste of a lower concentration with regard of caries prevention (3) in subjects until 16 years old (4) a follow up of at least 1 year (5) data about non-cavitated or initial caries lesions. Descriptive and qualitative analysis of the included studies were performed and also the evaluation of individual risk of bias. Results: Only one study was included from the 268 articles initially searched. This study showed results of initial or non-cavitated caries lesions threshold and compared low F and standard F dentifrices. However, it did not show allocation concealment and random sequence generation. Conclusion: There is still no evidence that toothpastes with different fluoride concentrations have the same efficacy in preventing progression of non-cavitated lesions. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 102 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P50 REABILITAÇÃO DENTÁRIA PELA TÉCNICA DA RÉPLICA OCLUSAL EM ODONTOPEDIATRIA Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul - UNICSUL Autores: Campos PH*,Guaré RO, Diniz MB Dental rehabilitation with occlusal replica technique in Pediatric Dentistry Objective: The objective of this clinical case was to demonstrate the occlusal replica technique with acrylic resin in a first permanent molar, aiming to preserve the occlusal aesthetic and the original anatomic characteristics of the dental element. Clinical Case Description: Patient, female, 8 years old, presented clinically caries lesion on tooth 46, pigmentation and microcavitation, with the occlusal anatomic characteristics preserved. Radiographically, the caries lesion was extended into deep dentin. After regional anesthesia, under absolute isolation, the matrix was made using a translucid acrylic resin. The cavity preparation was performed with a dental round diamond drillon a high-speed rotating instrument, and then the carious tissue was removed with dental round drillon low-speed rotating instrument and dental excavators. Glass ionomer cement provided pulp complex protection, and then the adhesive technique was performed with incremental resin restoration. After being internally covered with glycerin, the matrix was repositioned on the last layer of the composite resin and then it was light-cured. After the procedure, the need of occlusal adjustment was checked. Conclusion: The occlusal replica technique optimized the clinical time, simplifying the sculpture, occlusal adjustment, finishing and polishing procedures and allowing a better aesthetic restoration. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 103 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P51 REABILITAÇÃO ESTÉTICO-FUNCIONAL DE UMA CRIANÇA DE 5 ANOS COM CÁRIE PRECOCE DA INFÂNCIA: RELATO DE CASO CLÍNICO Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba - Universidade Estadual de Campinas Autores: Barbosa-Martins LF*, Cardoso M, Inagaki, LT, Pascon FM, Gavião MBD, Puppin-Rontani, RM A esthetic and functional rehabilitation of a child 5 years with early childhood caries: a case report Abstract: Despite the decline in caries, economically disadvantaged families have difficult access to guidance on oral health, as well as preventive and restorative dental treatments. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical case of oral rehabilitation of a patient with early childhood caries. On clinical examination, there was extensive caries lesions with no clinical crown of upper deciduous teeth and caries in teeth 73, 74, 75, 83, 84 and 85. After clinical and radiographic examination was indicated for extraction of upper teeth and pulpectomy teeth 75, 84 and 85. The treatment plan was prepared following the criterion of urgency: adequacy of the oral cavity, removal of foci of infection with dental extractions, endodontic and restorative treatments. Were made of fluoride varnish applications in direct restorations and lower teeth with composite resin teeth 73, 75, 83 and 85. After completion of the pulpectomy, the teeth 74 and 84 receiving steel crowns. Orientation educationalpreventive oral care was given to the child and the person responsible for the treatment. Following the procedures described above was made dentures. The patient received speech therapy speech to readjust to the new oral condition. It can be concluded that the treatment was successful, as with oral rehabilitation was the restoration of masticatory function and aesthetics, promoting better quality of life for the patient. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 104 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P52 REIMPLANTE DE DENTES DECÍDUOS AVULSIONADOS: UMA REVISÃO SISTEMÁTICA Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri Autores: Prado RNS*, Martins-Júnior PA, Franco FAS, Barcelos RV, Marques LS, Ramos-Jorge ML Replantation of avulsed primary teeth: a systematic review Background: There is little evidence regarding the risks and benefits of replantation of avulsed primary teeth. Aim: To perform a systematic review of the literature about the replantation of avulsed primary teeth, analysing the risks and benefits to help guide dentists regarding the best clinical decision making in such cases. Methods: Medline/Pubmed, LILACS and SciELO databases were surveyed for articles on the replantation of avulsed primary teeth published in English, Portuguese or Spanish in dental journals dating from the inceptions of the databases until May, 2013. Results: Of the 882 studies identified in the search, seventeen fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All 17 studies were case reports involving a total of 31 replanted primary teeth. In 11 cases there were no negative consequences in either the primary teeth and the permanent successors. Among the other 20 cases, there were negative consequences to: only the replanted primary teeth in 10 cases, only the permanent successor in 3 cases; both replanted primary teeth and the permanent successors in 7 cases. Conclusion: There is a lack of high-quality studies that can help guide clinicians regarding the best approach in cases of primary tooth avulsion. However, if performed only in optimal conditions, reimplantation may be a feasible and effective treatment. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 105 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P53 RELAÇÃO ENTRE POLISSACARÍDEOS INSOLÚVEIS, EXPOSIÇÃO AO AÇÚCAR, MICRORGANISMOS CARIOGÊNICOS E CÁRIE PRECOCE NA INFÂNCIA - UM ESTUDO LONGITUDINAL Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba - Unicamp Autores: Souza TR*, Parizotto TM, Duque C, Rodrigues LKA., Nobre-dos-Santos M. Relationship among insoluble polysaccharide, sugar exposure, cariogenic microorganisms and early childhood caries - A longitudinal study Objective: We aimed to assess the relationship between early childhood caries(ECC) and extracellular insoluble polysaccharides (IP) in dental plaque, sugar exposure and cariogenic microorganisms. We also performed a screening of the ability of S. mutans strains to synthesize glucan in vitro. Methods: Clinically visible plaque on maxillary incisors was recorded, followed by caries diagnosis in sixty-five 3-4 year-old children at baseline and after one year. Plaque was collected for mutans streptococci (MS), total microorganism (TM) and lactobacilli (LB) enumerations in selective media, as well as for IP analysis which was later assessed by colorimetry. In vitro glucan synthesis was assessed by a zymographic assay and sugar/sucrose exposure by a diet chart respectively. Results: Positive correlations were found among caries prevalence and MS, TM, LB, solid sucrose and dental plaque. Children with IP concentrations in dental plaque higher than 2.36 μg/mg, with visible plaque on maxillary incisors, harboring LB and exposed to solid sugar more than twice/day showed higher risk of developing caries. (p<0.05). We found no correlation between IP concentrations in dental plaque and the ability of S. mutans strains to synthesize glucan. Conclusion: Extracellular IP, solid sugar/sucrose, visible dental plaque and cariogenic microorganisms predicted ECC. The ability of S. mutans strains to synthesize glucan in vitro did not reflect the IP level in dental plaque of children with ECC. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 106 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P54 SAÚDE BUCAL DO PACIENTE INFANTIL COM FIBROSE CÍSTICA Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul (UNICSUL) Autores: Modesto KBS*, Duarte DA, Damaceno N, Almeida ER. Oral Health of Children with Cystic Fibrosis Patient Abstract: Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disease that brings complications for the respiratory and digestive systems, and can compromise the quality of life of patients and their families. This study aimed to investigate the impact of dental caries and periodontal changes on the quality of life of parents responsible for CF patients, 5-12 years of age ( mean = 8.8) and both genres (33.3 % boys), in the Ambulatory Child ISCMSP, São Paulo - SP. A cross sectional study was planned analytical methodology followed the WHO (1997): indicesdmft and DMFT (tooth decay); IPCNT index (periodontal changes) and WHOQOL (quality of life). Data were analyzed by SPSS version 14.0 using the Spearman test and Mann - Whitney (CI = 95 %, p =.05). Observed mean dmft= 1.3 and mean DMFT = 0.37; IPCNT = 2, with the presence of dental calculus yellowish predominant in the inferior incisors, and WHOQOL average = 13.45. There was no statistically significant difference in the distribution of dental caries and periodontal changes on the quality of life of those responsible (p > 0.5). Conclusion: Despite not having been observed the impact of oral health on the quality of life of those responsible for CF patients, it is noteworthy that the average quality of life was found below the parameters recommended by the WHOQOL group, indicating the need for greater attention to this particular group. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 107 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P55 SAÚDE BUCAL NA ESCOLA DE APLICAÇÃO DA UFPA: PROJETO ESCOLA SORRIDENTE Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) Alexandrino LD*, Castro MLSS Oral health in the School of application of UFPA: Smiling School Project Dental caries is a infectocontagious disease dependent on several factors for its origin and development which may even lead to teeth loss. Methodology: S. mutans biofilms were formed on saliva-coated hydroxyapatite discs in batch culture containing sucrose and changed daily for 5 days. The biofilms were submitted to PACT (2.5 mM of curcumin and 48J.cm2 of blue LED – 3 min 33 sec) and CHX (1 min). Biofilms were assessed by environmental scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and microbial viability (CFU/mg of biofilm dry weight). Planktonic suspensions of S. mutans were standardized and submitted to PACT treatment at low concentrations of curcumin (0.75 uM) exposed to a high power intensity of a white light for an extra short exposure time (12.2 sec). Results: Significant differences were found to PACT groups in comparison to controls and CHX to both studies (< 0.05). The morphology of biofilms demonstrated a high rate of dead cells to PACT group, even though without expressive results regarding biofilm topography. Conclusions: PACT mediated by curcumin presented antimicrobial effect against S. mutans biofilms and superior performance when comparison to chlorhexidine. The new source of light presented a lethal photoinactivation at an extra short exposure time. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 109 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P57 TRATAMENTO DE MORDIDA CRUZADA ANTERIOR NA DENTIÇÃO DECÍDUA E IMPACTO NA QUALIDADE DE VIDA DA CRIANÇA E DA FAMÍLIA Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru/Universidade de São Paulo (USP) Autores: Valente MT*,Oliveira TM, Silva TC, Silva SMB, Rios D, Barbério GS, Zingra ACG, Calderan MF, Lourenço Neto N,Machado MAAM Anterior cross-bite treatment in the primary dentition and impact on the quality of life of the child and family Abstract: The malocclusions may show up during the first teeth eruption. The anterior cross-bite directly affects the facial aesthetics and chewing. The anterior cross-bite in the primary dentition does not necessarily means a class III malocclusion. This alteration may be due to functional deviations occurred during the deciduous incisors eruption, if this is not corrected in this phase, it may have a negative impact on the stages of the dentition development: a functional deviation may become a bone deviation. This case presents a 5 years and 8-months old girl that went to the Pediatric Dentistry clinic of the FOB/USP with her mother complaining that the anterior cross-bite compromised the child’s socialization and chewing. The case was solved through the maxilla expansion using the Haas expansion device followed by facial mask to the anterior bite correction. The result was satisfactory, anterior cross-bite stabilization was reached allowing the permanent incisors to erupt non-crossed. The mother related positive changes on the child’s behavior and feeding after de malocclusion correction. The child became more sociable and better integrated to the family’s and school’s activities and started to eat better. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 110 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P58 TRATAMENTO ORTODÔNTICO PREVENTIVO EM BEBÊS Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru / Universidade de São Paulo (USP) Autores: Calderan MF*, Silva TC, Oliveira TM, Silva SMB, Rios D, Barbério GS, Zingra ACG, Valente MT, Volpato LER, Machado MAAM Preventive orthodontic treatmentin child Abstract: Anterior crossbite in the primary dentition does not necessarily mean that the child has a Class III malocclusion. This change may be due to functional deviations occurred during the early phase of the primary incisors eruption. If not corrected at this stage, it may have a negative impact on the later stages of the dentition development: going from functional deviation to skeletal deviation. Case Report : Two babies, an 1 year and 8 months old girl and a 2 years and 3 months old boy, went to the Baby Clinic at the FOB / USP. The main complaint of both parents was about their children’s aesthetics. Additionally the boy’s parents were bothered by the fact that he did not pronounce some words correctly. Machado & Amaral, based on the Planas principles, developed a treatment protocol for these cases through occlusal adjustments. By using matrix celluloid crowns for primary teeth, reanatomizations were made on the crowns of deciduous incisors, this intervention corrected he anterior cross-bite. The result was quite satisfactory. Besides the aesthetic aspect, it was possible to restore function and reduce chances of future orthodontic interventions. Parents were also pleased with the results. The importance of clinical and radiographic follow-up in the later stages of dental development is highlighted. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 111 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement Anais GRUPO 2013 44º Encontro do Grupo Brasileiro de Professores de Ortodontia e Odontopediatria ODTP-P59 USO DE DENTIFRÍCIO E PRÁTICAS DE ESCOVAÇÃO POR PRÉ-ESCOLARES Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Autores: Barja-Fidalgo F*,Santos APP, Luz PSR, SilvaTV, Rodrigues-Júnior JL, Oliveira BH. The use of toothpaste and tooth brushing practices by preschoolers Abstract: Several children’s toothpaste formulations are available in Brazil. There is evidence that only those containing at least 1,000 ppm fluoride (F) have anti-caries effect. Objectives: to estimate the prevalence of toothpaste use, according to F concentration, in preschoolers attending a health care center in Rio de Janeiro, and to assess aspects related to the amount of toothpaste and toothbrushing supervision. Methods: among the 226 adults who were approached in the Pediatric clinic, 190 were interviewed by three dental students using a pre-tested questionnaire. Results: the mean age of the interviewees was 30.2 years (SD 8.5); the majority of them was the child’s mother (87.9%) and belonged to the medium economic level – “classe C” (83.7%). The children’s mean age was 3.9 years (SD 1.5). Tooth cleaning was performed by 178 (93.7%) children; 18 (9.5%) did not use toothpaste, 123 (64.7%) used a pea-size amount of toothpaste or less and 49 (25.8%) used an amount of toothpaste equivalent to the full head of the toothbrush. Most children (57.9%) brushed their teeth under parental supervision. The prevalence of the use of non F toothpaste and low F toothpaste was 11.6% and 2.6%, respectively. Conclusions: although the majority of the children clean their teeth using toothbrush and a small amount of standard F toothpaste under parental supervision, some tooth brushing practices that can negatively affect caries control and increase fluorosis risk have been identified. © 2013 Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics 112 Dental Press J Orthod. 2013 Nov-Dec;18(6):Supplement
