Welcome Message
On behalf of the SDEMPED 2015 Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you all to
Guarda (Portugal) for the 10th edition of the IEEE International Symposium on Diagnostics for
Electric Machines, Power Electronics and Drives (SDEMPED 2015).
It is really a great honor and a pleasure as well, to have the privilege to host SDEMPED for the
first time in Portugal. SDEMPED has been established as the only international symposium
entirely devoted to the diagnostics of electrical machines, power electronics and drives. Started
in 1997 in Carry-le-Rouet (France), under the leadership of Professor Gérard-André Capolino and
Professor Giuseppe Buja, SDEMPED is now a regular biennial event mainly organized in Europe.
Very successful recent editions have been held in Vienna (Austria) in 2005, Cracow (Poland) in
2007, Cargèse (France) in 2009, Bologna (Italy) in 2011, and Valencia (Spain) in 2013.
For the 2015 edition, SDEMPED has received the financial co-sponsorship of the IEEE Power
Electronics Society, the IEEE Industry Applications Society and the IEEE Industrial Electronics
Society.
Portugal has been chosen for the 2015 edition of the symposium, and CISE - The
Electromechatronic Systems Research Centre (http://www.cise.ubi.pt/en/index.html) is in
charge for its organization. The SDEMPED 2015 Organizing Committee wishes you a very
successful symposium.
Enjoy Portugal, enjoy SDEMPED 2015 and join us to make SDEMPED 2015 a memorable event!

General Information
The City of Guarda
The origins of the city of Guarda date back to a long
time in history. The original traces that are still visible
take us back to the Neolithic Period, the best examples
being the dolmen of Pêra do Moço and the stone axes
which can be seen in the city museum. The Tintinolho
and Jarmelo forts and a stretch of a Roman Road are
other important historical remnants of the Bronze Age
and the Roman Period, respectively.
In 1199 D. Sancho I, the second king of Portugal, founded the city of Guarda by royal decree in
order to encourage a local population to settle and at the same time to provide a defense from
possible Spanish invasion through the eastern frontier of Portugal.
The city of Guarda was the stage of important military
events that took place in Portuguese history, namely
in times when Portugal had to fight for its
independence. It was also the place chosen by several
kings of the first and second dynasties to ratify
treaties, establish diplomatic agreements and summon
the Court.
Guarda is associated with military defense and
religious traditions. This legacy is evident in its patrimony: the Torre de Menagem, dating back to
the twelfth century; the ruins of medieval walls; the Cathedral, built between the fourteenth and
sixteenth centuries; the Monastery of Saint Francis; the baroque churches of Misericórdia and
Saint Vicent and the old Bishop’s Palace. The Chapel of Mileu, a place dedicated to the cult of
the Virgin Mary, dates back to the romantic period.
Guarda is located in the interior of Portugal, in the Serra da Estrela region, and is known as the
highest city in the country (1,056 metres).
Its natural resources make Guarda a mountain city
with wild landscapes that offer a magnificent scenery.
Guarda is known as the city of the 5 F’s: Fria (cold) –
due to the typical mountain weather; Forte (strong),
because it defended the country from possible
invasions; Farta (plentiful), because the fertile
Mondego valley always responded to the needs of the
population; Fiel (loyal), due to the courage and
determination in not surrendering to the King of Castille; and Formosa (beautiful), for its natural
beauty.

Methods to Evaluate the Quality of Stator and Rotor of Electric Motors
Sebastião Lauro Nau
WEG - Manager of Research and Technological Innovation
Abstract
This paper describes some innovative methods for evaluating the design quality and the actual
condition of an electric motor. Some techniques discussed below were developed inside the
company with the aim of increasing the reliability in the assessment of the stator and/or the
rotor of a squirrel cage motor. The methods discussed for stator evaluation involve the
measurement of iron losses and the realization of accelerated ageing tests, concerning the
quality in the design stage of an electric motor. The methods discussed for rotor evaluation
involve procedures to check the continuity of the bars and short circuit rings, concerning the
quality in the manufacturing stage and allowing assessments of the actual condition of the
machine in the field.
Short Biography
Sebastião Lauro Nau received his Engineer, M. Sc. and Doctor degrees from the
Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Brazil, in 1985, 2000 and
2007, respectively. He is currently Manager of Research and Technological
Innovation at WEG Equipamentos Elétricos S.A., Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil, and a
Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Centro Universitário Católica de Santa Catarina, Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil. His work and research topics are induction
machines, magnetic noise, synchronous motor with permanent magnets and application of
motors with frequency inverters.

Large Rotating Machines Monitoring and Condition Assessment
Miguel Simas
EDP - Power Generation Company, Maintenance Manager
Abstract
Nowadays, a greater and greater operation flexibility and reliability of the electrical rotating
machines is required, especially in the electrical generation process with thermal origin, due to
the surplus energy capacity and the market change for renewable energy. On the other hand,
the design and manufacturing of new electrical rotating machines has to face an increasingly
competitive market where the cost reduction is a must, with an impact on reliability. In order to
meet the challenges of flexibility imposed by the market, while ensuring the best reliability of
these machines, this paper covers the monitoring strategy, condition assessment and corrective
measures adopted for the critical electrical rotating machines fleet of EDP Produção – a EDP
Group Company. In this context, “on-line” and “off-line monitoring” and “condition assessment”
techniques of turbine generators and electrical motors will be described, as well as the result
interpretation and some case studies.
Short Biography
Miguel Simas is a Maintenance Manager in the Power Generation Company, part
of EDP Group, with a large experience in the field of Fossil Power Plants. EDP
Produção covers the activities of conception, project, management, installation of
site supervision, commissioning and operation & maintenance. Miguel’s recent
works include Overalls Management and Commissioning (with dynamic balancing)
of Turbines, Generators, and their auxiliary Equipment in Fossil Power Plants. His work
experience also includes Operation and Maintenance of Rotating Machines for over 25 years.
