A relatively successful writer, she teaches literature and creative writing at the university. Happy,
open-minded, a divorced mother of a young couple, both professionally well established. When her

Clarice left of her secret, they find out more than they wanted to know about their mother’s role in
the recent history of their country and why she always insisted on the relativity of truth.

THE AUTHOR
A political scientist with a PhD from Cornell University, Sergio Abranches has
a daily op-ed commentary on the Brazilian all-news radio network CBN on
Ecopolitics. He cofounded O Eco, an environmental news agency dedicated to
training young journalists to report on environmental themes and to facilitate
the dialogue between scientists and journalists, with support from Avina and
Hewlett Foundation. In 2010, he published Copenhagen: before and after, a
journalistic account of the Copenhagen summit on climate change and global
climate change politics. His story on the Muriquis (Brazilian spider monkeys),
primates of the Atlantic rainforest, co-authored with Miriam Leitão, was awarded the SOS Mata
Atlântica prize for environmental journalism. Besides his two novels, he has published a short story
book as well.

THE AUTHOR
João Almino, whose novels have been highly praised by Brazilian critics, has

Maria Pia Andreoni is a body therapist, actor’s coach and writer. As a professional she has integrated her dance and dramatic arts experience to her
studies in metaphysics, anatomy and movement, combined with a meditation practice in the development of a method that treats muscular expression
through a holistic approach. The Muscular Organization of Expression technique is based on the interrelation between muscles and emotions to create
a harmonious image. During the work process, emotions, movements, gestures and voice are elaborated into one single expression, which constantly
integrates body and psyche. Maria Pia lives in Rio de Janeiro, where she is the director of The Expression Factory and teaches her method to artists, businessmen, therapists and the general public.

builds their house and love nest precisely in the worst swamp from all pieces of his inheritance, a
condominium erected over the ashes of a notorious slum in the opulent South Zone of Rio, which
had to disappear to give room to the speculation of the real estate market. Amongst the remains of

THE AUTHOR
Born in 1973 in Campina das Missões, southern Brazil, Marcelo Backes
completed a doctorate in German and Romance Studies at Freiburg
University, after studying Journalism and Brazilian Literature. He is
an author, translator and lecturer, having edited over twenty classic
and contemporary international writers, and translated more than
thirty German and Austrian authors, often in the context of annotated
editions, including Goethe, Schiller, Heine, Nietzsche, Kafka and Arthur
Schnitzler. In 2010, he won a scholarship as a writer in the Academy of
Arts, in Berlin, where he wrote The Last Minute. His published works include two novels; a collection
of aphorism, epigrams and narrative fragments; and book on the history of German literature and
his doctoral thesis on Heine.

Marina – A Life for a Cause is the biography of Marina Silva, Brazilian environmentalist, former
Senator and former Environment Minister who was depicted by The Guardian newspaper as one of

Marília de Camargo César is a journalist and a writer, author of the successful
title Hurt in the Name of God (Feridos em nome de Deus), which stayed for
several weeks on the best seller lists, in 2009. She worked for TV Globo, Gazeta
Mercantil, and Il Sole-24 Ore, main business daily in Italy. She was a member of
the founding team of Valor Econômico, major financial and economic paper in
Latin America, where she works as an editor. Born in São Paulo, where she still
lives, Marília is married to André and has two daughters, Marina and Luiza.

THE AUTHOR
Lúcio Cardoso (1912-1968) is one of the leading Brazilian writers of the
period between 1930 and 1960. As well as authoring dozens of novels and
short stories, he was also active as a playwright, poet, journalist, filmmaker
and painter. Within the history of Brazilian literature, his oeuvre pioneered
subjective scrutiny of the modern self, bringing to the fore the personal dramas
and dilemmas that underlie perceptions of collective existence. Lúcio Cardoso
came from a strongly Catholic background, and his diaries (re-published 2012,
in Portuguese) furnish a powerful account of the doubts and guilt deriving
from his homosexuality. As a writer, he turned away from the social realism
fashionable in 1930s Brazil and opened the doors of Brazilian Literature to
introspective works such as those of Clarice Lispector – his greatest follower and admirer. Cardoso
was also a major force in the renewal of the Brazilian theater in the 1940s, authoring the first play
staged by the Teatro Experimental do Negro group, pioneered by Abdias do Nascimento. He was also
an ardent lover of cinema, which engaged his interest as a filmmaker in the 1940s and led eventually
to his screenplay for Paulo Cesar Saraceni’s Porto das Caixas, the first production of Brazil’s Cinema
Novo movement in the 1960s. Partially paralyzed by a stroke in 1962, Cardoso was forced to give up
writing and turned to painting instead. In the words of Fausto Wolff, “he began to express in images
that which he could no longer say with words”. In 1966, Cardoso was awarded the Machado de Assis
Prize, for lifetime achievement, by the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He died two years later, at the
age of 56, following a second stroke.

socialist politician and a leading light of Weimar Germany, declared enemy of the State in 1933, after

the fall of France in 1941. The untold story of his exile in Brazil, where his path crossed with other
famous exiles such as Stefan Zweig and Georges Bernanos, provides a unique and fresh perspective
on the events of the Second World War. The narrative unfolds to flesh out the experiences of Simon
and his family, living out of the aftershocks of exile against the backdrop of a rapidly changing
Brazilian society. From the authoritarian regime of Vargas in the 1940s to the military dictatorship
of the 1960s, the specter of fascism looms in the distance as Simon, his wife Gertrud, their two
daughters, their artist and adventurer son-in-law, and their grandson, all face the challenge of carving
out a new life from the ruins of the one left behind. The story will get to contemporary times when
some precious art collected by Simon, which financed his escape, starts being recovered by his great
grandchildren, but not the renowned The Scream by Edvard Munch, recently bought by a millionaire
for the Moma for record price. Authored by Simon’s greatgrandson, this is a veritable family saga
over three generations, shedding light on the great 20th-century theme of individuals struggling to
maintain their identities in the face of adversity.

Rafael Cardoso is a writer and art historian, holding a PhD from the Courtauld
Institute of Art. His works of fiction include Entre as mulheres (2007), Controle
remoto (2002) and A maneira negra (2000), all published by Editora Record in
Brazil, and have been translated into German, Spanish and Italian. He is also the
author of numerous books on the history of Brazilian art and design and is active
as an independent curator. He currently resides in Berlin, where he is finalizing
The Remnant in both English and Portuguese.

A story of love and lovelessness between a white priest and a married black woman, flirting with
superstition and candomblé (a religion of African origins), which takes place during the demolition
of Morro do Castelo (the Castle Hill), a symbol of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in 1921. In A Lane up to
Nowhere, the many nuances of this doomed relationship are exposed to the reader with pathos and
the necessary lightness – from beginning until the unusual, but poetic and freeing end. In parallel,
the reader follows the urban reforms which were arrogantly imposed on the population of Rio at
the beginning of the last century. The settings of Morro do Castelo, with its mysterious underground
tunnels, in the central part of the city, underline the misfortune of a couple that had to face strict limits
to their love.

Marco Carvalho was born in Rio, in 1952, and is a cartoonist and a writer.
He began his career as an advertisement designer and worked in several
agencies in Rio. His drawings and charges were published in newspapers,

press. Currently, he develops projects as an editor and designer, besides
being dedicated to writing his next novel.

Luis Erlanger was born in 1955, in Rio de Janeiro, and has six children. He

many different desks. In Brasília, he was in charge of the coverage of Brazil’s
democratization process: the first direct elections, president Tancredo Neves’
death, Palácio do Planalto (the government seat), the new Constitution of
1988, the impeachment of president Collor and several economical plans that
changed the country. After four years as O Globo’s editor in chief, he changed
to TV Globo in 1995, as Journalism director. From 2000 to 2013, he was TV
Globo’s director of Communication. This year, he was promoted to director
of Quality Control Analysis. Before I Die is his first novel, and he is already
writing his second one.

Marisa Ferrari was born in 1957, in Rio de Janeiro. Having a college degree
in Journalism and a Post-Graduate degree in Ancient Philosophy, she has
written all her life: poems, plays and screenplays which have been composed
and put away, except for the musical A Charmless Prince, staged with great
success in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. It was not until now, at a mature age, that
Marisa has taken her first determined steps into the literary scene, presenting
the readers her first two novels. At present, Marisa works also as a journalist.

Antonio Geraldo Figueiredo Ferreira was born in Mococa, SP. He studied at the
University of São Paulo (USP) where he graduated in Languages/Literature and
joined the postgraduate program. In the 90s, he left the university and moved
to Arceburgo, a small town in the interior of Brazil. He published the book Fish
And Wane, Poems, by Nankin Editorial, and other texts in various newspapers
and magazines. In 2012 he published his first novel, The Visits We Are Today by

Testimony, memory, masturbation, fiction, history, Cabala, Bible, and literature enclose and permeate
the biography of a young Jewish man in his search for a place in a contemporary Brazilian ghettos
post the WW II Diaspora. From early childhood to the age of thirty-three, he is pursued by the dibouk
as he searches for the woman. The character narrates his life, connections and missed connections
with irony, iconoclasm, quotations, and literary plagiarism. In a tone often poetic and prophetic
and sometimes vulgar and profane, the author describes vivid memories and lessons originating
from family, love, and social relationships in high school. In a voice distinct from the narrator’s, he
constructs a story within the story, one which alludes to the search for Martin Bormann, a Nazi who
escaped prosecution after World War II. After an encounter with the Nazi’s grandson, the narrator
finds himself unable to fully assimilate into the Brazilian culture, especially in the eyes of the other.
From an international perspective, Antitherapies shows what is both exotic and common about a
small Brazilian jewish community in the twenty-first century.

THE AUTHOR
Jacques Fux is a visiting scholar at Harvard University (2012-2014), performed
post-doctoral studies at the University of Campinas, received his Ph.D. in
Comparative Literature from UFMG and doctorate in Langue, Littérature et
Civilisation Françaises from the Université de Lille 3, his Master’s degree in
Computer Science and bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from UFMG. In 2011
he published Literatura e matemática: Jorge Luis Borges, Georges Perec e o
OULIPO, which was awarded the Capes Prize for the Best Thesis in Letters and
Linguistics in Brazil in 2010. The author has produced diverse academic works

Vivianne Geber has worked for almost sixteen years as Legal Advisor for the
Brazilian Navy on a number of Congressional bills, also providing information
to judges and the Attorney General’s Office. She holds a postgraduate degree
in Public Law and has acted as examiner of lawyers who apply to work in the
Navy’s legal departments. All her adult life, she has been a writer of petitions,
appeals and opinions, but recently, in London, where she lived for two years,
she has become eager to stop writing for judges and started writing for readers

Thales Guaracy is a leading contemporary Brazilian author, with more than
200.000 copies of his books sold along the years. Born in 1964, in São Paulo, he
worked as a journalist in the mainstream media, as for the newspaper O Estado de
S. Paulo and weekly Veja. He received the great distinction of the Brazilian press,
the Esso Award, for his coverage of the first presidential election after 30 years, in
1989. Guaracy wrote a best seller biography, Brazilian Dream, the life of Rolim
Adolfo Amaro, founder of Brazilian airline TAM, and is among the country’s

Miriam Leitão is one of Brazil’s most influential economic journalists. Her
precise, clear analyses have been published since 1991 in a daily column on

Marco Lucchesi was born in Rio de Janeiro from a Tuscan family, in December,
1963. Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, member of the Brazilian
Academy of Letters and Cavaliere of the Italian Republic, he worked for many
years as editor of reviews and facsimiles at the National Library. He has published
essays, fiction and poetry, and besides the awards he received for Crime Gift,
Marco Lucchesi won the Ars Latin Award, in Romenia, for his essay Fictions from
a Western Cabinet, in 2009; the Alphonsus Guimarães Award, for Sky Meridian

Raphael Montes, born in 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, is a writer as well as a lawyer
and has published stories in various mystery anthologies. Suicides is his first

of Jonas is intense, probably due to dreams that he is having during coma. A drama then emerges,
where dreams and reality mingle and communicate to each other, in this philosophical novel about
the meaning of life (and the battle for saving it). Jonas and everybody around him have to face
questions about death, aging, career, wealth, love, marital conflicts, and the relationship about parents

Rio de Janeiro, 1567. Rio was only two years old when Francisco da Costa, a locksmith, was found
dead by eight arrows, near the core of the village. Not long before the crime, the last indigenous

But it was not what the Portuguese concluded: in a short period of time, ten Christians, ten citizens

Evando Nascimento is a writer, essayist and university lecturer in literature.
From the State of Bahia, born on August 8, 1960, in Camacã, he currently

THE AUTHOR
Jorge Reis-Sá was born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, a small city in the north
of Portugal, in 1977. He attended courses in Astronomy and Biology and is
an editorial consultant after being the founder and editor of Quasi Edições
(1999-2009) and editorial director of Babel (2010-2013). He has produced
several anthologies, being Portuguese Poems (Poemas portugueses),
the most important one, the largest anthology of Portuguese poetry ever.
His poetry is collected in the book Anthropology Institute (Instituto de
Antropologia). Besides the novels Every Day and The Gift, he published
the volumes of short stories Clay (Terra) and Because It is Needed (Por
ser preciso) and several chronicle books, as he often collaborates with newspapers and magazines
like LER, Público and Sábado.

THE COUNTESS OF PICAÇUROVA (A CONDESSA DE PICAÇUROVA)

To annihilate the “imbeciles” and assert his concept of a “model-person”, genius Cesario Boaventura
develops a theory about monkeys’ supremacy over the human race. His theory arises not only from
his observation of the citizens of Coité, a fictitious city mounted atop self-destructive paradigms,
but mainly from the bizarre and unexpected appearance of a female monkey out of the trunk of
an “orabutan” (an indigenous term for the Brazilwood tree, after which the country was named).
Welcomed by the surrounding community, the monkey wittingly manages to define her own space
and, with that, she grants the citizens’ devotion. While keeping her simian condition, the monkey
becomes the novel’s main character, Benguela. Humanized, Benguela eventually becomes a countess
– the Countess of Picaçurova – therefore achieving the highest level of artificiality: a title of nobility.
Following these events, a joint effort – always paying homage to the whims of Death – causes the
entire social order to collapse. The novel’s plotline is rooted in Brazil’s deepest and lesser-known
realities that are constantly trespassed by opposing forces: the universal and the particular, the
modern and the archaic, the real and the surreal. A mythical timeline and an amorphous space help
illustrate the split panels of contemporary societies.

THE AUTHOR
Antonio Salvador works as a writer and a lawyer. He also follows a career in
academics, teaching in several Brazilian and foreign universities. A number
of his articles appeared in different academic magazines and he took part in
international projects of institutions such as DiverCult in Spain and RAIA
(Ibero-American Audiovisual Net). He was co-researcher for the documentary
Ctrl -V – VideoControl, released in 2011. He is author of the essayistic book
Three Pennies for the Culture, to be published in 2014, and co-author of the
documentary book Videocracy, also to come out in 2014. With his debut novel The Countess of
Picaçurova, he won the Literature Prize Prêmio Nascente in 2009, awarded by University of São
Paulo, was nominated to the Machado de Assis Prize of the National Library in 2012, and was a
finalist in the São Paulo Prize for Literature in 2013. Born in 1980 in Natal, he moved to São Paulo as
a child. Currently he lives in Berlin, where he dedicates his time to writing his second novel.

Here is a novel of alternative History about the horrendous latent possibilities of Nazism taking power
in the south of Brazil during the 1930’s and the II World War. During Vargas dictatorship, a secret deal
with Germany enforces the Nazi Party in Brazil, promoting the militarization of the German colonies
– in the states of Rio do Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana. Following the steps of Adolpho
Ventura, a brilliant black man who suffers from Nazi persecution, mainly after his “Aryan” girlfriend
gives birth to a mixed blood son, the book reveals a strategically erased page of Brazilian history – a
serious affair with the racialist ideology –, building a narrative full of tensions between tropical Brazil
and Europe, in a frightening proposal of social cleansing. Historical turn-arounds provoke a wave
of violence which delights the ruling elite in a nation that does not see itself and does not accept its
character as a product of blood mixture. In that other Brazil, Black people do not have a place. One of
the characters says: “Getulio Vargas is teaching us what it means to be black in Brazil.”
With the intensity of a Tarantino movie, Miguel Sanches’ novel shows us, Brazilians, that our History
could have been a nightmare.

Born in 1965 in southern Brazil, Miguel Sanches Neto is one of the leading
writers of contemporary Brazilian literature. His novels combine human
depth, narrative dexterity and critical vision. Coming from a family of
uneducated laborers, Sanches Neto was formerly a farmhand, an agricultural
technician and a schoolteacher. Today he teaches literature at university
level and contributes to Brazil’s major newspapers and magazines. A finalist
to the most prestigious national book awards, he received the 2002 Cruz e
Sousa Prize and the Binational Brazil-Argentina Arts and Culture Award (2005). His literary output

The time and place of this novel is a mythical e a-historic Brazil. The First People has inherited the
secret of the Time of no Evil, and that is what their enemies wish to discover. In fact, the secret for
“this land of happiness, freedom and love” is just to live the best way you can, and wait. Nevertheless,
the people of El Dorado believe that this secret must be more concrete and material. They plan to
achieve it and, for that, reunite its own and powerful army, and also the mercenaries of the People
without Color, the Dry-Bodies and the Living-Dead. The First People has other mythical forces to
defend their land, among them the Amazons and the gigantic M’Boitatá.
The novel narrates the history of this war, meanwhile other mythical beings present themselves:
Uiara, an Amazonian version of the sirens, Curupira, defender of the forests and their animals, the
Old Trampler Lady, the twins Macu and Naíma and the Men of the Rain. Through the novel abound
fantasy, deaths, amazing love scenes and a lot of humor with commitment to no truth whatsoever.

characters from different worlds pivot around this fulcrum in a dense book that is a pleasure to
read, written with various types of language and in voices that reflect the diversity and vitality of a

THE AUTHOR
Maria José Silveira is a writer and translator. Graduated in Communication
and Anthropology, with a Master’s Degree in Political Science, she worked for
several years as an editor and publisher. Her first novel, The Mother’s Mother,
received an award by APCA in 2002 and the rights were purchased by TV
Globo. Since then, she dedicates herself exclusively to writing and published
a vast work of awarded children and YA books, many of them adopted by
government programs. She has also written three plays, all staged. Born in
Goiania, she lives for years in São Paulo.

THE AUTHOR
Hubert Tézenas was born in Paris, in 1962. After chaotic studies (three years in
École Normale Sup and three months in Sciences Po, in Paris), in 1985 he left
everything and moved alone to Brazil, where he fell in love for the country. He
tried two or three jobs in several regions and became a translator of romance
novels to finance his trips. Gradually, he specialized in noir literature. Back to
France after ten years, he became the translator of Robert Crais, MO Hayder,
Ed McBain, Elizabeth George, Tess Gerritsen, Erik Larson. Nowadays, he works
in the translation of James Sallis’ Driven. Also out of love for Brazil, he recently
translated into French two important Brazilian contemporary authors, Edney
Silvestre and Alberto Mussa. The Gold of Quipapá is his first novel and was
inspired by the years he lived in the Brazilian Northeast.
