Grupo Globo wins over 160 awards in 2014
Winning over 160 awards throughout the year, Grupo Globo gets to the end of 2014 being
seen by the market and audience in a positive light.
Professionals, pieces and companies were acknowledged by some of the most representative
awards - in Brazil and abroad - in the sectors Grupo Globo operates in.
Among the most recent awards, the telenovela “Joia Rara” picked up the International Emmy®
as the best in its genre. In the same edition of the awards, Grupo Globo president Roberto
Irineu Marinho won the Emmy® for World Television Personality.
In November, some of the group’s companies stood out in the 36 th edition of the Vladimir
Herzog Award for Amnesty and Human Rights with seven pieces in the running.
The Esso Awards, one of the most important for the Brazilian press, acknowledged pieces by
the O Globo and Extra newspapers. CBN and Globo, as well as TV Globo picked up the
traditional award given out by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA).
G1 and Globoesporte.com won the "The Best of Digital Design" prize by the Society for News
Design Foundation, in the category Excellence Award. G1’s infographics picked up awards for
the Special: “G1 refaz a rota de ‘Bye Bye Brasil’ – Capítulo Piranhas (AL)” (G1 retakes the route
of ‘Bye Bye Brasil’: Chapter Piranhas (state of Alagoas); for the Special: “Guerra na Selva” (War
in the Jungle); and the Special “Maracanã: um mergulho na história do maior estádio do Brasil”
(a look into the history of Brazil's biggest stadium). Globoesporte.com picked up an award for
the infographic "Messi + Neymar”, which tells the story of heroes Messi and Neymar, up to the
moment when they came together as Barcelona teammates and as players of their respective
national squads.
The ZAP Imóvies portal also stood out, picking up the Época Reclame Aqui Award, in the
Internet Classified category (best customer service).
“The over 160 awards given out by such important institutions in Brazil and abroad, in such
diverse areas like journalism, design, drama, sports, advertising, cinema, real estate market,
defence of press freedom, children's protection, health and several others make us proud, in

Society for News Design Foundation, in the category Excellence Award. Awarded infographics.
1) Special: ”G1 refaz a rota de ‘Bye Bye Brasil’ – Capítulo Piranhas (AL)” (G1 retakes the
route of "Bye Bye Brasil” – Chapter Piranhas (state of Alagoas).
The infographic shows what changed in the town of Piranhas, by the São Francisco
River, following the film 'Bye Bye Brasil’ by Cacá Diegues shot in the 70s. After the film
was shot, electricity and new technologies were brought to the town, bringing an end
to the region's cultural isolation.
2) Special: ”Guerra na Selva” (War in the Jungle)
Drills at the Jungle Warfare Training Centre (CIGS) take place in an area of dense forest
in the Amazon. Death among students have been attributed to the course, which has
been investigated by the Federal Prosecution Services for abuse and keeping people
against their will.
3) Special “Maracanã: um mergulho na história do maior estádio do Brasil” (a look into
the history of Brazil’s biggest stadium)
The history being Brazil’s biggest football stadium the Maracanã is told from its
construction to the renovation in 2013.
4) Messi + Neymar
Infographic telling the story of heroes Messi and Neymar up until the moment they
became teammates at Barcelona.
5) ”Toca a bola” (Playing ball)
The story of Francisco Antônio Neto (59) from the state of Piauí, who has spent his life
collecting rare items. His vinyl collection brings some discoveries that link music to
football celebrities.
6) ”VC Convoca" (You call up)
Infographic that provided readers with the opportunity of putting a Brazilian squad
together for the Confederations Cup and the World Cup.
Entertainment:

EMMY®
“Joia Rara” picks up the best telenovela award at the 42nd edition of the International
Emmy®.

Annual Award “Highlight in Promoting the Donating of Organs and Tissues in Brazil"
Author Manoel Carlos for telenovelas “Laços de Família” and “Em família”. In addition
to other health related issues, the telenovelas paid special focus to the subject of
transplants. According to information from some state agencies, the number of
transplants increased after the telenovelas addressed the subject.


PromaxBDA Award
Created to distinguish among the best work in promotion, marketing and design for
television and considered the biggest achievement in the industry, the PromaxBDA Award is a

international association of marketing, promotion and design professionals, which represent
the world’s main television networks.
In the Latin America PromaxBDA Award, TV Globo scooped up three of the six final
categories:
1) Telenovelas Promotion: Silver with the campaign for "O Rebu".
2) Drama Fiction Promotion: Silver for the campaign for miniseries “Serra Pelada”.
3) Promotion of Local Programming Sports Show: Bronze with the spot used for the 2014
Formula 1 season.

Communication Outlets Awards – Referência Publisher
Globo won the 28th Communication Outlets Award in the free to air TV category.
Staged by Referência Publishers, through Propraganda Magazine, the award acknowledges
communication outlets and professionals who effectively and successfully stand out every year
in several sectors. The jury, made up of members of the Brazilian Marketing Academy
(Abramark) decided who the winners were on 6 November. The award ceremony will be held
in March 2015 in São Paulo.


Professional Contribution Award - Garra do Galo Trophy: Aimed at advertisers that
promote actions that value the professionalisation of the sector and present innovative

1) Esso 2014 Newspaper Report Award: Awarded to reporters José Casado, Danielle
Nogueira, Vinicius Sassine and Eduardo Bresciani from the O Globo newspaper for
their series of pieces entitled “Farra de aditivos na Refinaria Abreu e Lima” (Addendum
Party at the Abreu and Lima Refinery), which showed how several addendums were
added to contracts signed with developers in charge of the project, adding an extra
US$ 3 billion to the refinery's total building costs since March 2008.
2) The Esso 2014 Photography Award: awarded to photographer Domingos Peixoto from
the O Globo newspaper. During the coverage of the protests that took place in Rio de
Janeiro’s City Centre last year, he photographed the exact moment when cameraman
Santiago Andrade, from TV Bandeirantes, was hit on the head by a firework. The
cameraman died as a result of the injuries and the photo sequence “Crime à liberdade
de imprensa" (Crime against the freedom of the press) was critical to investigations, as
well as for the arrest of the suspects Caio Silva de Souza and Fábio Raposo. On that
day, Domingos had already sent several photos from the protests back to the office,
but decided to remain behind until the end of the demonstration. He was the only
one to capture the tragedy and always knew the importance of the photo as a
document.

WAN-Ifra Award
O Globo newspaper was awarded the International Newspaper Color Quality Club
certificate, from the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WANIfra). The certificate means that it is considered a product with the best graphic quality
in the world. The award was given out in Amsterdam, during the World Printers
Forum, meeting held on 15 and 16 October as part of the organisation's annual trade
show - the World Publishing Expo -.

GDA Award
Category Investigative Report: The series “No alvo dos EUA” (A USA target), published
by the O Globo newspaper won the Journalism Award by the American Group of Daily
Newspapers (GDA). The pieces, published between 7 and 9 July 2013 were written by
Roberto Kaz, José Casado and Glenn Greenwald. The pieces were based in never seen
before documents, leaked by former NSA (National Security Agency) employee Edward
Snowden, who in the previous month had started to divulge thousands of USA
intelligence files to the British and American press.

Secovi Rio Award
Category - Media: Awarded to Raphaela Ribas for her piece “Vagas que valem um apê”
(Parking spaces that are worth an apartment), published in Morar Bem in November
2013. The piece, which shows how much a parking space costs in relation to the price
of real estate in Rio says that the difference between an apartment with a parking
space and one without (in the same area) could be enough to buy a property. As in the
case of the three bedroom apartment with two parking spaces in the Leblon
neighbourhood, which as shown on the piece, means a difference equivalent to a one
bedroom in Ipanema, a four bedroom flat in Tijuca and three, three bedroom
apartments in Méier.

ABP Award (Brazilian Association of Psychiatry)
Category - Printed: Series of pieces “Retratos da vida insana no cárcere" (Portraits of
an insane life in jail), produced by reporter Vinícius Sassine. The pieces were published
in February 2013. The multimedia material published in the O Globo newspaper and its
website, showed that in Brazil, people with mental disabilities are kept in prison
together with common inmates. In fact, they experience worse conditions than the
rest of the inmate population.
 Vladimir Herzog Award
1) A Photo by Marcelo Carnaval, O Globo newspaper photographer won the Vladimir
Herzog Award for Amnesty and Human Rights. In its 36th edition, the award assessed
images from outlets throughout the country, in addition to pieces for printed
newspapers, internet, magazines, radio and TV.
It is night time and a man raises his arms up in celebration. His silhouette is highlighted
by a burning bus right behind him. Wet with rain, the road reflects the fire, making the
pavement the young man is stepping on golden.
It is 7 October 2013 - date when a demonstration in favour of teachers on strike was
held -. Like most of the demonstrations last year, the protest ended with a
confrontation between the police and black blocks, who set the bus on fire.
The impressive image carries a lot of meaning.


Comunique-se Award
The O Globo newspaper won five of the award's categories, which acknowledges
journalist performance based on the whole set of his/her work and not assessing only
one specific piece.
Columnist Ancelmo Gois won the prize for best news blog.
Columnist Patrícia Kogut was chosen as the best culture printed media journalist.
Columnist Míriam Leitão picked up two awards: the first as the best economics
journalist on electronic media and the second, as the best economics journalist on
printed media.
Writer Luis Fernando Verissimo was chosen as the best opinion columnist.

Malofiej Award
O Globo newspaper scooped up two bronze medals in the 22 nd edition of the world’s
biggest infographic award, the Malofiej from the Society for News Design/Spain
(SND/E), together with the School of Communication of the Navarra University:
1) "Conheça o palco" (Meet the stage), by Alessandro Alvim, with collaboration from
Vinícius Mitchell and Walter Moreira about the new Maracanã.
2) "Cultura da inflação, sobre o preço dos ingressos de cinema" (Culture of inflation, on
the price of cinema tickets), also by Alessandro Alvim.

Society for News Design (SND) Award
O Globo newspaper picked up four prizes at the 35th edition of the Society for News
Design (SND) Awards, international organisation that focuses on the excellence of
graphic design employed by journalistic outlets throughout the world:
1) Category - Local News and Sports: Artwork on the new Maracanã stadium, published in
April 2013. The newspaper was the only one from Brazil to win an award for
infographics. By Alessandro Alvim, with collaboration from Vinicius Mitchess and
Walter Moreira, the infographic showed details of the changes undergone by the
stadium during the refurbishment for the World Cup, which took two years and eight
months.
2) Category – Photography/Single Photo: Picture of the Awa Indians that the O Globo
newspaper printed on its cover on 4 August. The snapshot was taken by the famous
photographer Sebastião Salgado, who travelled with journalist Miriam Leitão to a part
of the Amazon Forest in the state of Maranhão, in order to portray the struggle for
survival by that tribe. Considered to be “the most threatened on the planet”, there are
just over 400 people in the Awa tribe, which is surrounded by municipalities that have
timber extraction as their livelihoods.
3) Category - black and white cartoon: Cartoon portrait of writer and philosopher Albert
Camus, French Algerian national, published in the supplement "Prosa", on his
centenary. The cartoon was drawn by Loredano.

Barbosa Lima Sobrinho Journalism Award
Picture “Crime à Liberdade de imprensa” (Crime against the freedom of the press)
taken by O Globo photographer Domingos Peixoto in February 2014 during a protest in
Rio’s City Centre. It catches the moment when cameraman Santiago Andrade from TV
Bandeirantes, is hit in the head by a firework.

Society for News Design (SND)
The cover of the special to celebrate Zico’s 60th birthday, published on 3 March 2013,
secured the excellence award for EXTRA from the Society for News Design (SND),
considered the most important graphic design prize for international printed
journalism. This is the sixth time that the newspaper wins an award from the
American institution.

Malofiej Award
The winner was a super-poster about Anderson Silva's revenge on Chris Weidman in
UFC. The poster was produced by Ivan Luiz and Felipe Nadaes, and won the bronze
medal at the 22nd Malofiej Award, considered the Oscar for global infographics.

International Press Design Contest (SIDI)
The charge “O país da Copa” (The country of the World Cup) by Renato Machado won
the 22nd International Press Design Contest (SIDI).

Inter-American Press Association (IAPA)
The first page published by the EXTRA newspaper the day after Brazil’s 7-1 defeat to
Germany at the 2014 World Cup was given an award in Buenos Aires Argentina by the
Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), one of the most respected organisations in
the defence of journalism in the world. The cover of the “Expresso” newspaper was
also one of the winners, ranking third in the number of votes from the jury.

Brazilian Marketing Academy (Abramark) – Communication Outlets Award
Category - Popular Newspaper: EXTRA was given an award for its commercial and
marketing actions, as well as circulation that lead to and ensure results and success.

ESSO Award – Southeast Regional Category
EXTRA won the award with a series of pieces called “Os embaixadores do Narcosul”
(Narcosul Ambassadors) by reporter Guilherme Amado. For six months, Guilherme and
photographer Cléber Júnior visited 16 cities in four countries: Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru
and Brazil. After interviewing 79 people and analysing 4,300 pages of public and
confidential information in the four countries and the United States, Amado wrote
about how eight big criminal organisations operate in these countries, showing who
the bosses are, their assets and suppliers.
This is the seventh time in 16 years that EXTRA wins what is considered to be the
country's most traditional journalism prize.
SISTEMA GLOBO DE RÁDIO

“Parceiro de Mídia 2014” (2014 Media Partner) - Childhood Brasil
Pedro Trucão, Globo Estrada presenter and Radio Globo were chosen by
ChildhoodBrasil as the 2014 Media Partner for the piece “Globo Estrada na Mão Certa”
(Globo Estrada in the Right Way), which fights against the sexual exploitation of minors
on Brazilian motorways.

São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA)
The São Paulo Association of Art Critics
(APCA) announced the winners of the 59th edition of its award. Over 50 critics were involved in
the choice and they met at the São Paulo State Journalist Union to choose this year's best
productions.
1) Category - Radio: The Jury’s Special Award went to Mílton Jung, CBN News anchor.
2) Category - Humour: Radio Globo with the programme “Plantão de Notícias” (News on
call), which airs every Saturday from 10:00pm to 12:00am.

Neide Castanha Award
The award pays homage to institutions and personalities that have stood out in the
defence of Children’s and Adolescents’ Human Rights.
The adjudicating commission chose the show "Globo Estrada", because of their piece
"Globo Estrada na mão certa" (Globo Estrada in the Right Way), presented by Pedro
Trucão.

Journalism Award of the Association of Public Prosecutors of the state of Rio Grande
do Sul
In its third edition, the award pays homage to journalistic pieces that show the work of
public prosecutors in the country. Over a hundred pieces were sent in from Brasilia, the state
of Espírito Santo, Pernambuco and Goiás. Rádio Santamariense, a network from Rio Grande do
Sul, scooped up first place.
Category - Radio: The piece "A dor que o racismo causa na alma" (The pain racism
causes in the soul) by reporter Basília Rodrigues, with sound by José Farias, picked up
second place in the Journalism Award of the Association of Public Prosecutors of the
State of Rio Grande do Sul in its category.

Roche Health Journalism Award
The Roche Health Journalism Award, organised by Roche Latin America, in partnership
with the Technical Secretariat of the Gabriel Garcia Márquez Foundation for New IberoAmerican Journalism, announced the three finalists for the radio category of its second
edition. There were over 51 applicants for this category in Spanish and Portuguese.
1) In addition to an Uruguayan and Argentinian professional, reporter Hebert Araújo from
CBN in João Pessoa is among the finalists with the piece "A volta da voz" (The return of
the voice).
2) The piece “Into sem controle” (Into no control) by Julio Lubianco got a special honorary
mention from the jury.

Homage by the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry
The Brazilian Association of Psychiatry paid homage to journalists who throughout the last
three years, worked on issues relevant to psychiatry and mental health. The ceremony was
held during the opening of the Brazilian Psychiatry Conference, the third biggest meeting of
the area in the world, on 15 October in Brasilia.
Category - Radio: Luis Fernando Correia, Health commentator from em Foco was given
an award for addressing mental health reform in the country and pointing out the fact
that it has not been completed.


The party’s 12th edition had as its theme “Jornalismo, uma missão quase impossível”
(Journalism, an almost impossible mission). The following received awards:

1) Category - National Radio: Reporters Elaine Freires from São Paulo and Bianca Lemos
from Santos (state of Rio de Janeiro) with the piece "Geração nem nem" (Generation
no no), about young people who do not work or study.
2) Category - Regional Radio: CBN Belém with the pice “Faculdares irregulars acabam
com os sonhos universitários” (Irregular universities end university dreams) by Celso
Freire and Cira Pinheiro.

Vladimir Herzog Award
Radio - Category: Reporter Hebert Araújo, from CBN in João Pessoa with the piece
"História de flor" (The Story of Flor). The piece addresses the story of rural leader
Margarida Maria Alves, who fought for the right of rural workers in the municipality of
Alagoa Grande, in the hinterlands of the state of Paraíba and was murdered in her
doorstep in August 1983. The case reached international repercussion and the
supposed hitmen, as well as those who hired them were tried and found innocent in a
controversial trial.

ABP Award (Brazilian Association of Psychiatry)
Radio - Category: Liriane Rodrigues, head of journalism at CBN Rio, won with the piece
"Transtornos mentais e o tratamento aos pacientes no Brasil" (Mental disorders and
how patients are treated in Brazil). The piece shows that less than half of mental
health patients manage to get any care in the public health system.

Bradesco Seguros Longevity Journalism Award
Category - Electronic Media: Reporter Alessandra Dias, from CBN São Paulo, won the
award with the series "Desafios da longevidade" (Longevity related challenges), which
addressed the aging population and their impact on health and economic issues.

Veículos Mais Admirados: Índice de Prestígio das Marcas (Most Admired Outlets:
Index of Brands’ Prestige) – Meio & Mensagem newspaper
The Troiano Branding Group announced the result of the 15th edition of the project
“Veículos Mais Admirados: Índice de Prestígo das Marcas” (Most Admired Outlets:
Index of Brands’ Prestige), promoted annually by the Meio & Mensagem newspaper.
This is one of the advertising market’s longest lasting survey, which points out the
outlets that have the most prestige in relation to the sector in six categories:
newspaper, magazine, television, radio, subscription TV and internet. The result is
measured through a Brand Prestige Index (BPI), methodology that takes the following
criteria under consideration: quality programming; credible content; efficient
commercial structure; media that generates results for advertisers; innovative; ethical;
audience engagement. The results from 2014 reflect the opinion of 1,055 advertising
professionals. They are top executives in agencies and advertisers, all involved in
investment related issues, who answered an online questionnaire.
For the 15th year in a row, CBN was chosen as the most admired radio station.

19th Edition Abrelpe News Piece Award
Category - Radio: Reporter Gabriela Viana, from CBN Rio won with the series "Lixões
irregulares no Rio de Janeiro" (Irregular Landfills in Rio de Janeiro). The pieces showed
the challenges the state faces in order to comply with the National Solid Waste Policy,
which established the end of landfills until August 2014.

1) GNT: winner in recall when the question is “When you think about subscription TV,
