Worksheet – Learning about Reading
Very often to answer a specific kind of reading exercise you do not need to read the full length of the
text with maximum attention. With a first quick reading you can obtain the answer to some exercises and
then proceed with an attentive reading of the text.
Here are some tips to improve your reading skills:
9 Pay attention to the title of the text and to the pictures because they will give you some idea of the
main subject.
9 Read the questions/exercises before reading the text. That way you already have an idea about the
text and your brain will let you know if you find a similar idea in the text.
9 Do not worry about finding out immediately the meaning of all the words you do not understand.
To get the main idea it is not necessary to know all the words.
9 If one word or phrase is causing you some trouble, try reading the whole sentence in which it
appears. Do not get stuck on that word. MOVE ON!!! Read the whole text, as quite often the
meaning becomes clear while you read.
9 Underline some aspects that you think are important, such as:
- main subjects;
- examples of these main ideas (that help you understand them)
- unfamiliar vocabulary and/or definitions

Neste momento, convém referir que acabaste de realizar um tipo de estratégia de leitura
denominada de Skimming. É um tipo de leitura em que se passa “os olhos” rapidamente pelo
texto para se conseguir retirar uma ideia geral do seu conteúdo. É importante que compreendas
que neste tipo de estratégia de leitura não são importantes os pormenores, mas sim a retenção da
ideia principal.
2. This time do the exercises proposed.
¬ Para reflectir:
É bom que entendas que não deves recorrer constantemente ao dicionário. Existem palavras com
as quais não precisas de te preocupar, porque o seu significado não é relevante para o
entendimento do texto. Outras há, cujo significado pode ser obtido pelo contexto.
¬ Para reflectir:
Como deves ter constatado, neste tipo de actividades já tens que estar mais centrado nos
pormenores; já tens que retirar informação específica desse texto. Este tipo de leitura denomina-se
Scanning. É um outro tipo de estratégia com outras finalidades , sendo a principal a localização
de informação.
