Noise in the Operating Room
In 1972, Shapiro and Baland described
noise in the operating room as the “third
pollution” and found it equalled the noise
of traffic noise from a freeway.
Current research demonstrates the OR
decibel levels of constant or intermittent
noise exceed the National institute of
occupational Safety and Health limits for
damaging noise at baseline with the
addition of music.
