onheci o Jano, se não me engano – é uma rima e uma solução – numa feira de
quadrinhos de Angoulême, quando o Ziraldo era presidente da Funarte. 1986, talvez? Me impressionou, ao
lado da pujança dos quadrinhos na França, esse Angeli francês que é o Jano. O pai da Rê Bordosa e dos
Skrotinhos, que também o conheceu naquela viagem, goza da mesma popularidade desse desenhador de
jovens ratões imersos na urbanidade contemporânea que é o Jano. Filho de operário de estrada de ferro,
ele também é um trabalhador: assenta dormentes de realidade em excelentes aquarelas onde procura
capturar a magia do que vê e sente ao redor do mundo: África, Índia, Paris e agora o Rio de Janeiro, onde
outro dia mesmo apareceu e já perpetuou estas maravilhosas pranchas que agora chegam às suas mãos,
graças à Casa 21 / Sinapse Projeto Cultural.

1 • CATETE – Típico bairro antigo do Rio – bem agradável.
2 • CENTRO – Os engarrafamentos ajudam na sobrevivência de toda uma população de pequenos vendedores de rua
– “tudo certo”, “brigado”...
3 • ARCOS DA LAPA – O antigo aqueduto colonial e o bondinho ainda ligam a colina decadente de Santa Tereza e
o centro todo de concreto.
4 • MADUREIRA – Neste bairro de lojas populares, a função dos manequins é evidente: celebrar o culto nacional...
5 • PÃO DE AÇÚCAR – O famoso Pão de Açúcar, emblema do Rio, visto do Flamengo num entardecer de domingo,
quando a galera vai indo embora...
6 • PÉ SUJO – É o barzinho do bairro, meio sujinho, mas a cerveja é geladinha e fica aberto até tarde, tanto para os habitués
do pedaço quanto para os que tão só de passagem...
7 • SANTA TERESA – “O bondinho” – este grande brinquedo – serpenteia com freqüência as ruas tortuosas de Santa Tereza...
por um preço módico pode se colocar o bumbum nos bancos de madeira, ou até mesmo viajar de graça nos estribos.
8 • COPACABANA – No famoso calçadão, o pessoal faz o seu jogging ou leva o cachorrinho para passear a qualquer
hora do dia... mas, de noite, é uma fauna bem mais estranha que fica rondando por aí... cuidado, gringo!
9 • IPANEMA – Pois é, né, num é que é verdade que tem garotas na praia de Ipanema!?
E ó, tem toda uma galera em volta da vendedora de biquínis…
10 • MARACANÃ – O maior estádio do mundo! E o seu público! Tambores de guerra, rumores profundos, alegria gritante
pulsam forte no concreto quente.
11 • CINELÂNDIA – Procurar inspiração em frente ao Teatro Municipal, cópia da Ópera de Paris... hum...
por que não uma outra cervejinha?!
12 • ILHA DE PAQUETÁ – No meio da Bahia de Guanabara, uma ilha com um astral diferente pois é proibido carros.
Um ar de Brasil antigo... o pessoal vem do continente para tomar um arzinho ou à procura de aventura...
13 • O MORADOR DE RUA E O BURRO SEM RABO – Já não é moleza ser catador de papel, se, além do mais,
tem que ficar dando pros pobres!!
14 • REALENGO – É o subúrbio profundo... Para o aniversário do Zé José, churrasco, cerveja à vontade
e um sambinha legal lá no fundo do quintal.
15 • FAVELA DE VIDIGAL – Pois é, né, aí tem problemas de abastecimento de água como em muitas favelas do Rio...
Quando o motorista tiver tomado a cervejinha…
16 • LAGOA – Pelas bandas da Lagoa, é mais pra chique… No entanto, num cantinho tem alguns quiosques, alguns barquinhos
e alguns irredutíveis pescadores! Bom, o problema é que é meio poluído...
17 • FAVELA DE SÃO CARLOS – Uma velha especialidade das favelas: churrasquinho de gato – os tempos tão brabos.
Cada vez mais armas e menos gatos!
18 • FEIRA DE SÃO CRISTOVÃO – No fim de semana, é a feira do pessoal do Nordeste, grande mercado do sertão no meio
da cidade, com aqueles cheiros brabos – carne de sol, churrasquinho de tripas, pimenta, cachaça – conjuntos tocando forró,
seus bailes safadinhos, seus pés-sujos e o povão festejando a noite inteira…
19 • PRAÇA XV – A chegada das barcas – como se fosse a descoberta das Américas pela enésima vez…
20 • BARRACÃO DA MANGUEIRA – A verde e rosa prepara o carnaval: construções de carros alegóricos imensos, decorações
gigantescas, fantasias alucinantes. Isto tudo leva meses, custa fortunas e o tema da escola deve ficar secreto até o desfile
– o que explica a “segurança” em volta do barracão.
21 • URCA – Este bairro, que fica no pé do Pão de Açúcar, é um pouco esnobe, ainda bem que nos finais de semana
os pescadores farofeiros invadem suas praias...
22 • SANTA TERESA – Agarrado no morro de Santa Teresa, o bairro era chique há um século – hoje é bastante decaído para ser
qualificado de bairro boêmio. Claro que tem artistas, mas tem principalmente barzinhos simpáticos e festeiros.
23 • PEDRA DE GUARATIBA – Bem no finalzinho do Rio, um bairrinho perdido... pescadores, mercado de peixes, bares...
tudo tranqüilo…
24 • VILA MIMOSA – Entre um bunker e uma galeria de lojas inacabada, Vila Mimosa é a cidadezinha das piranhas. O clima
favorece vestimentas bem permissivas, somente alteradas durante o Natal, quando de repente surgem os gorros do Papai Noel!
25 • MANGUEIRA – “Saúde, Paz e Amor” é o lema das crianças das associações da favela...
o que não é fácil com todas estas gangues do tráfico e o modo com que lidam com as confusões.
26 • FLORESTA DA TIJUCA – Nas ladeiras dos morros que dominam o Rio, a floresta tropical está cheia de cachoeiras fresquinhas
– deliciosas para se refrescar do calorão da cidade…
27 • ARCO DO TELES – Bem no centro da cidade, secretárias e executivos se encontram nos barzinhos
– escolha é que não falta – para um happy hour…
28 • FAVELA DO VIDIGAL – Uma das mais belas vistas do Rio e muitas oficinas mecânicas... ninguém nem desconfia o porquê?!
29 • SÃO CARLOS – Na favela, o bar-armazém-farmácia-jornaleiro-bazar – é o ponto de encontro das estrelas do samba
ou do chorinho que tocam para os amigos, tudo regado por uma estupidamente gelada…
30 • CORCOVADO – Do alto dos seus 700 e tantos metros, o Cristo Redentor abençoa a cidade e seus numerosos pecados...
que Ele nos perdoe a rede brasileira!

2 • CENTRO – The traffic jams helps in the survival of an entire population of street sellers. They raise their thumb up as a
courtesy sign for: “OK”, “thank-you”... It is really very used.
3 • ARCOS DA LAPA - The old colonial aqueduct and the “bondinho” (the last streetcar remaining in Rio) still connect the hill
with the ancient neighbourhood of Santa Teresa and the modern downtown all built in concrete.
4 • MADUREIRA – In this neighbourhood of popular boutiques the purpose of the models is clear: to celebrate the
national obsession...
5 • PÃO DE AÇÚCAR – The famous “Sugarloaf”, emblem of Rio, seen from Flamengo beach on Sunday late afternoon,
when the crowd retires...
6 • PÉ SUJO – Literally meaning “dirty foot”, it is the small bar of the neighbourhood, a bit untidy, but the beer is cool and it
remains open until late, not only for the habitués but also for the ones occasionally passing through...
7 • SANTA TERESA – The “bondinho” - this big toy clatters regularly in the winding streets of Santa Teresa... For a
moderate price one can taste its wooden benches, or travel for free on the stirrups.
8 • COPACABANA – On the famous promenade you can go jogging or walk your pet at any time of the day... but at night
a much more suspicious fauna which prowls thereabout... tourist beware!!
9 • IPANEMA – Yo ‘ bro, lots of chicks, doin’fine on Ipanema beach, mainly around the bikinis saleswoman...
10 • MARACANÃ – The biggest stage of the world! And its public! War drums, deep rumour, loud joy, pulsing strongly
under the overheated concrete.
11 • CINELÂNDIA – Looking for inspiration in front of the Municipal Theatre, a copy of the Paris Opera House... humph...
why not another beer?!
12 • ISLE OF PAQUETÁ – In the middle of the Guanabara Bay, an island with a different atmosphere because cars are
forbidden. With airs of the old Brazil... people come here from the continent fot the fresh air or to look for adventure...
13 • SEM TETO E BURRO SEM RABO – Homeless and donkeyless! As if being rounding up cardboard from the streets isn’t
a hard enough way to make a living... you even have to give some to the more needier!
14 • REALENGO – Deep in the suburbs... For Zé José’s birthday, a barbecue, beer for everyone, and the “fundo de
quintal”: samba in your own backyard!
15 • VIDIGAL SLUM – Well, yes, water is short here as in a lot of favelas (slums)... But the driver is in no hurry to
finish his beer...
16 • LAGOA – Around the lagoon, live the elite... Yet in a corner, some kiosks, some dugout canoes, the fishermen insist on
casting their nets. OK, but the problem is the pollution...
17 • SÃO CARLOS SLUM – An old speciality of the slums: cat’s skewers - times are hard. More and more weapons,
less and less cats!
18 • SÃO CRISTOVÃO FAIR – On weekends, this is where the people from the Northeast of Brazil gather, a big country
market in the middle of a modern city, with those strong smells - meat dried in the sun, tripe on a stick, spices, cachaça
(sugar cane brandy) - the forró bands (with their typical music and dance from “Nordeste”), the sensual dancing, the
‘pé-sujos’ bars and the crowd partying all night long...
19 • PRAÇA XV – The arrival of the ferry - like America being discovered for the umpteenth time...
20 • MANGUEIRA WAREHOUSE – The green and pink Mangueira samba club prepares for Carnaval. In big abandoned
warehouses, they build huge carriages, gigantic decorations, hallucinating costumes. All of this takes months, costs a fortune,
and the theme of the club must remain a secret until the parade - which explains the “security” around the warehouse.
21 • URCA – Standing at the foot of the Sugarloaf, this quiet district is a bit snobbish. Fortunately during the weekends it is
overtaken by the rowdy fishermen and kids with their picnic boxes...
22 • SANTA TERESA – Perched on a hill, this district was quite chic one century ago - today it is decadent and known
as a bohemian quarters. There are certainly plenty of artists there, but specially nice friendly bars and people who love
parting...
23 • PEDRA DE GUARATIBA – A small district lost at the end of Rio... fishermen, fish markets, bars... all nice and quiet...
24 • MIMOSA VILLAGE – Between a bunker and an abandoned shopping mall, this is Hooker’s Town. The weather allows
for permissive clothing, except for Christmas, when all don Santa hats.
25 • MANGUEIRA – “Health, peace and love” claims the slogan of the children’s slum’s association... not easy with all these
drug traffickers and their way to settle problems.
26 • TIJUCA FOREST – On the slopes of the mountains that overhang Rio, the tropical forest overflows with small cascades
of pleasant freshness - ideal to refresh from the boiling heat in the city...
27 • ARCO DO TELES – Right downtown, surrounded by office buildings, secretaries and businessmen have a plentiful
choice of “barzinhos” either for flirting, or for “hunting” or just for a happy hour before going home...
28 • VIDIGAL SLUM – One of the most beautiful views of Rio and lots of car repair shops... can anyone guess why?
29 • SÃO CARLOS – In the favela slums, the “bar-grocery-store-pharmacy-tobacconist-newstand”, meeting point for the
samba stars or the choro musicians who play for their friends, washing down stupifyingly cold drinks...
30 • CORCOVADO – From the top of its more than 700 meters, Christ the Redeemer watches over the city and its countless
sins... may He forgives us for the Brazilian hammocks!
