4. CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
The main research area and interest are the study of reactions in Organic Chemistry
applied to the coordinated-metal complexes Chemistry, using “green” technologies as
microwave irradiation for the synthesis of novel compounds as tetrazoles, triazoles,
azides, lactams….and the study of their biological properties. Others interests are the
use of the microwave irradiation technology in the extraction of essential oils and
extracts from plants, fruits, olive wastes, beer, wine with characterization of the
obtained natural products, their chemical functionalisation as well as the study of their
biological properties (antioxidant, antibacterial, antitumoral, antidepressive) and the
development of innovative final products applied against hospitalar infections, diseases
treatment and with interests in food, cosmetics industries as well as environmental
applications.
Scientific Areas of Interest: Organic Ligands reactivity, metal-mediated organic
synthesis, Coordination chemistry in cycloaddition reactions, catalysis, heterocycles,
Microwave assisted-promoted synthesis, extraction of plants, antimicrobial and
antioxidant activity.

(Ciência Viva nas férias) –Chemistry applied to Health “A
Química na Saúde”, developed at ULHT and sponsored by the
Ministry for Science and Technology. This annual program allows
secondary level students to spend one week in July at the
University performing experiments supervised by researchers.
2000-Present :
One of the creators of the Program “Create Knowledge”-“Criar
Saberes”. Responsible of the area of Chemistry. Each week,
during all the academic year, the University ULHT receive
secondary schools. The students visit the university and are
introduced to laboratory activities.
