STAND 10H03 OPENING ARCO 2013 MADRID 13 – 17 FEB ARTISTS CLAIRE DE SANTA COLOMA JOÃO FERRO MARTINS RUI HORTA PEREIRA ROSANA RICALDE SARA & ANDRÉ SAM SMITH 3 +1 CONTEMPORARY ART Gallery opened in February 2007 with the aim of promoting the work of emerging and established Portuguese and International artists, whose works illustrate the diversity of contemporary artistic practice. The gallery has gained notoriety for its exhibited artists and its commitment to exhibiting unconventional exhibitions in a commercial context, the various initiatives in promoting its artists both in the gallery and offsite projects. 3 +1 is committed to its evolution and development as a gallery, encouraging and supporting projects by its artists both in and outside of Portugal and by focusing on the internationalization in our programation and by participating in art fairs. CLAIRE DE SANTA COLOMA 1983 AR lives and works in Lisbon Claire de Santa Coloma’s practice is predominately based in sculpture and drawings, often incorporating both elements within the works. There appears to be a tension of structure versus the organic in her works while a subtle harmony is played out between the two. Claire is interested in working with base materials such as wood and paper, the subject of her works often surrounds the idea of space and the relation between the static and nonstatic worlds. Studied Visual Arts at Maumaus, Lisbon 2009/2010, studied sculpture at Ateliers Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris 2003/2007, receiving her MA in fine arts from La Sorbonne, Paris 2007. Coloma has participated in residencies in FAAP, São Paulo; Casa de Velázquez, Madrid and through Maumas, Lisbon. With a forthcoming exhibition at MUMU in Cordoba, Argentina other highlighted exhibitions include: Coimbra University, Portugal 2012; The16 ª Bienal de Cerveira and Konsthall Lund, Sweden 2011; the Goethe Institute, Lisbon and Carpe Diem Art & Research, Lisbon 2010. Collections include The Hubert Guerrand-Hermès Collection, The Mickey Boël Collection and The José Luis Lorenzo Collection among various other private collections. Untitled, 2013 (detail), Paper cut-out, 89 x 132 cm JOÃO FERRO MARTINS 1979 PT, lives and works in Lisbon Sound and three dimensional works form the basis of the artistic career of João Ferro Martins. He has also developed countless actions involving music, performance and video. Running parallel to this dialogue of sound and music is the Compendium series, an extension of trying to make sense of world through image which is already faulted. Attended the E.S.A.D. Caldas da Rainha the course of Fine Arts where he begins his work in painting, drawing and photography 2007. Residencies include Fundação EDP and MNAA Olhares Contemporâneos Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. The technical and physical relationships are important factors explored in his conceptual framework, through and seemingly underlying logic. Pereira studied Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon in 2000 and awarded a development grants in 2006 & 2011 from the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and DGArtes 2009. ROSANA RICALDE 1971 BR lives and works in Rio de Janeiro Rosana Ricalde´s works investigate the complexity of language in its application and various levels of interpretation. Throughout Ricalde´s practice she has incorporated elements of text either directly or indirectly, the former of which she is known well for by using cut-out sentences from books and constructing almost infinite lengths of them to map out the streets of cities, or by creating complex sculptures and installations. In other works the artist employs calligraphy to build forms which question where the visual poetry and the drawing begin. Ricalde recieved her Bachelors from Escola de Belas Artes - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 1994. SARA & ANDRÉ 1980 & 1979 PT live and work in Lisbon Through the use of photography, performance, sculpture and video, Sara & André focus their work on issues related to appropriation, authorship and legitimacy. Their works, normally novel and site-specific are based upon a survey of the sources of production of art theory, which directs their artistic practice. Identity and self-representation are key themes employed in their multidisciplinary collaboration, with a derisive and provocative tone that characterizes their work. Sara graduated from Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, Lisbon, Portugal 2005 and André from the Escola Superior de Arte e Design das Caldas da Rainha, Portugal 2005. Sombra Projectada de Sara & André, 2012, Acrílico e madeira 48 x 48 cm, Ed.3 + 2 APs SAM SMITH 1980 AU lives and works between Berlin & Sydney Sam Smith is a video and installation artist whose practice integrates sculptural construction and moving image in an exploration of cinematic language. Interrogating the formal structure of screen-space his work examines montage, filmic narrative and the camera apparatus. The works explore the (de)construction of time and space within this framework, creating a dialogue with the idea of cinema as three-dimensional. After receiving a BA in Fine Arts at COFA, Sydney, Australia 2000-2003 Smith has been the recipient of numerous awards and has participated in residency programs at Helsinki International Artist Programme 2012 & 2013; ARTSPACE, Sydney, Australia 2010; Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo, Japan 2005 and with a residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin upcoming in 2013.
