Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Configurations: Rotating pin-on-disc contact; Reciprocating pin-on-plate contact. Applications: Fundamental wear studies; Friction and wear testing (metals, ceramics, soft and hard coatings, plastic, polymers and composites); Abrasion tests on materials, thrust washer wear test, wear and corrosion studies,; Wear screening tests for engine components (piston ring, cylinder liner and piston skirt). Jorge H O Seabra, Professor Catedrático da FEUP, Director do CETRIB 16 of 54 Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Test Rigs CETRIB Micro-Scale Abrasion Tester; Ball Cratering Rotation of a ball against a plate in the presence of an abrasive slurry results in the production of a circular depression. In the case of coated plates, if the coating is worn through, a “bulls-eye” depression is observed. Measurements of the inner and outer diameters of this “bullseye” are easily made and provide an accurate and low cost method of determining coating thickness. It is possible to determine the wear coefficient of hard and soft coatings and monolithic materials by abrasive wear in a ball on plate contact configuration. Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Total Acid Number measures the total acid concentration in the oil. As the oil ages and oxidizes, small amounts of acid byproducts are formed in the oil causing the AN to increase. The degree to which AN has increased over the new oil’s baseline is an indication of the extent to which the oil has degraded. A high TAN typically indicates that the useful life of the oil has expired and it needs to be changed. Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial The flash point is the lowest liquid temperature at which application of the test flame causes the vapors of the test specimen of the sample to ignite. Flash point can indicate the possible presence of highly volatile and flammable materials. For example, an abnormally low flash point on an engine oil can indicate gasoline contamination. Open Cup – Cleveland Method Jorge H O Seabra, Professor Catedrático da FEUP, Director do CETRIB 27 of 54 Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Lubricant analysis CETRIB Particle Counting (ISO 4406:99, NAS 1638, SAE AS 4059) Oil cleanliness, using particle counting, is an important tool to extend either, the lubricant and equipment service life. Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Determines the number and size-distribution of the particles in an oil sample: Particle Counter (PAMAS SBSS) Jorge H O Seabra, Professor Catedrático da FEUP, Director do CETRIB 28 of 54 Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Lubricant analysis CETRIB Ferrography Ferrography is a rapidly expanding technology of wear particle analysis: Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial It is a diagnostic and predictive technique; Offers a convenient means of accurately evaluating the condition of interacting lubricated components without shutdown. Types of Ferrography tests: Direct Reading Ferrograph (DRIII) and Analytical Ferrograph (FM III) When DR Ferrography reveals a pronounced increase in the particle density and severity of wear index, an Analytical Ferrogram should be made to determine specifically what type of wear is occurring and to provide the basis from which a decision can be made whether to overhaul or continue operation. Jorge H O Seabra, Professor Catedrático da FEUP, Director do CETRIB 29 of 54 Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Lubricant analysis CETRIB Direct Reading Ferrograph (DRIII) The Direct Reading Ferrograph measures quantitatively the concentration of ferrous particles contained in a lubricant sample. Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial The DR Ferrograph magnetically precipitates the wear particles from a sample; Provides digital readings of the quantity of both large (> 5 µm) and small (< 5µm) particles; These numerical readings and their relative values provide a reliable basis for assessing the degree of wear occurring in a machine. Jorge H O Seabra, Professor Catedrático da FEUP, Director do CETRIB 30 of 54 Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Lubricant analysis CETRIB Analytical Ferrography (FM III) The Analytical Ferrograph is used to prepare a Ferrogram – a fixed slide of wear particles for microscopic examination and photographic documentation. Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações e Manutenção Industrial Wear particles suspended in an oil sample are magnetically precipitated into a thin glass slide, or Ferrogram. The microscopic analysis of the Ferrogram provides a qualitative basis for evaluating and visually recording the machine wear history. It also provides specific identification of wear mechanisms and individual parts producing patterns of incipient or catastrophic failure.
