Since 2008, Architecture Ricardo Guedes acts on Architecture,
Urban Planning, Design, along with other related disciplines,
through a constant support of Social, Cultural, and Economical
analysis.
Desde 2008, Arquitectura Ricardo Guedes intervém em
Arquitectura, Urbanismo, Design, entre outras disciplinas
relacionadas, com um constante suporte de análise Social, Cultural,
e Económica.
The creative process is anchored on incisive contextual research,
thorough conceptual experimentation, and ambitious pragmatic
design, building creative narratives for every challenge.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER
Born 1978 in Porto, is a Portuguese architect and principal of
Architecture Ricardo Guedes.
Nascido no Porto em 1978, arquitecto Português e fundador de
Arquitectura Ricardo Guedes.
In 2005 concludes his Architectural degree in Universidade Lusíada
do Porto. During its educational development, has also attended
the Brandenburgische Technische Universität in Cottbus, Germany,
and has been a national contact of EASA - European Architecture
Students Assembly.
Em 2005 conclui a sua licenciatura em Arquitectura na
Universidade Lusíada do Porto. Durante o seu percurso académico,
estuda na Brandenburgische Technische Universität em Cottbus,
Alemanha, e torna-se no contacto nacional da EASA - European
Architecture Students Assembly.
Throughout his professional background, he collaborated with
international offices in Portugal, Norway, and the Netherlands,
which includes the Pritzker Prize laureate Rem Koolhaas, Office for
Metropolitan Architecture - OMA in Rotterdam. He has also been a
Partner/Director of former architecture Oslo and Porto practice,
ONOFFICE.
Ao longo da sua experiência profissional, colaborou com diversos
escritórios internacionais em Portugal, Noruega, e na Holanda,
incluindo o escritório do vencedor do prémio Pritzker Rem Koolhaas,
Office for Metropolitan Architecture - OMA em Roterdão. Foi também
Sócio/Gerente do escritório ONOFFICE, com sede em Oslo e Porto.
His professional experience includes being involved and/or been
responsible for a wide set or architectural projects and phases,
based in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Angola, Norway, USA, Italy, and
Russia.
A experiência adquirida inclui o envolvimento e/ou responsabilidade
de liderar múltiplos projectos em diversas fases de Arquitectura, em

The first competition “Self-Sufficient Housing”, was meant to
challenge young architects, for the research on new ways of living,
addressing environmental concerns on the way we build our cities.
O primeiro concurso “Self-Sufficient Housing” surgiu desafiar jovens
arquitectos na procura de alternativas à maneira como encaramos
o modo de viver contemporâneio, e os modelos de construção
convencionais.
Sidegrade consists in a structure that occupies the unused facades.
The lodgers of the base pre-existing building should have a counter
back for allowing a new infrastructure attached to their building.
So the structure functions also as a system that improves the
economical and ecological resources of the building, by collecting
water, solar energy, and advertisement. sustainability of their
building. A direct metaphor is the different species of animals that
gain with their mutual relation.
Ocupando as empenas não utilizadas, Sidegrade através das
suas infra-estruturas de criação e armazenamento de energia,
irá proporcionar novas valências para o edifício que o albergar.
A proposta Sidegrade teve como objectivo questionar os
edifícios existentes nas cidades, ao contrário de tentar criar algo
completamente novo. Para isso, o Sidegrade utiliza/adapta-se às
empenas cegas, seguindo 3 premissas:

The commission was to redefine a countryside family house, already
under construction. With the main structure and mass already there,
the challenge was to first of all rethink the conceptual approach,
and how can this be put in to practice, without damaging what has
already been built.
Since the beginning, the ambition of the clients was to have a
countryside house that would eventually become their home, but
would only be visited from time to time, from the rest of the family
and friends.
The previous project didn’t follow this premise. Our proposal
reinforces this idea. The house is split into 2.
O proposto era redefinir uma casa de campo familiar, já com
projecto e em construção. Com a estrutura e grande parte da
construção em pé, o desafio primordial era repensar o conceito
base da casa, e pô-lo em prática sem danificar o que já estava
construído.
Desde o inicio que o objectivo dos clientes, era ter uma casa de
campo que futuramente seria o seu lar, e que esporadicamente
receberia visitas do resto da família e dos amigos. O projecto inicial
não seguia esta premissa. A nossa proposta veio reforçar esse
desejo. A casa é dividida em 2.
Uma casa permanente e uma casa temporária.
Full time house vs Temporary house.
The general volumetric aspects of the existing project are kept,
avoiding time delays and keeping the budget. Nevertheless, we
propose a new wooden cladding, so although the house has 2
different programmatic setups, it still appears as a single volume.
With the addition of the main bedroom on the west, we keep the
main house active, while the other bedrooms are kept closed.
Os aspectos gerais da volumetria inicial são mantidos, para evitar
atrasos de construção e aumento de orçamento. Contudo, a nova
proposta considera um novo revestimento em madeira, para que
embora a casa tenha 2 identidades, possa ser entendida como uma
casa familiar unitária.
Com a adição do quarto principal a oeste, mantem-se a casa
principal activa, enquanto o volume restante fica adormecido.

The aim of the competition was to create an “object” of neutral
and uncertain character; witch should provide a value to several
unprivileged populations. The response is a social dynamo that must
mutable, flexible and plural, as a quick and accurate response to the
needs. The solution is a sectional block that divides in three, sliding
it to the sides. As for the social context, the façade can be design
or modified in order to blend itself in some communities, where
the acceptance is a vital key for a long and real social support,
whether is a ghetto, a deserted village, or emigrant communities.
The proposal was elected has winner of this competition, due to its
straight forward approach.
O objectivo primordial do concurso seria criar um objecto adaptável
a variadas actividades, consoante o público alvo, populações
desertificadas ou áreas de carência social. A proposta consiste
num bloco de 35 m2, que ao poder expandir-se até ao máx de
100 m2 (limite imposto), irá permitir o seu uso para formações,
eventos sociais, acompanhamento médico/psicológico, etc. Para
isso cada terço da proposta terá equipamento multimédia, apoio a
restauração, instalação sanitária.
De forma a poder ser rapidamente assimilado pelos seus
utilizadores, a imagem exterior e materiais serão mutáveis, mas
com o conceito de polivalência sempre presente.
After winning the 2007 edition, we were invited to build a prototype
of the winning proposal, to host the 2008 edition of the Tektonica
Prize, as well the Portuguese Architecture Association pavilion on
the fair.
The pavilion consisted in two divided elements. One would host an
event/multimedia space where images of the new projects would be
presented, and the second would be an information desk and book
selling.
Após vencer o concurso em 2007, no ano seguinte surgiu o convite
para conceber o espaço Ordem dos Arquitectos/Prémio Tektónica
2008, com vista a promover o concurso anual.
Foi construído uma réplica temporária, adaptada às necessidades
da exposição.
Um espaço multimédia onde os novos vencedores seriam
anunciados, e o balcão de informações e venda de livros da Ordem
dos Arquitectos Portugal.

Ave. Liberdade, in Lisbon, is one of the main arteries of the city.
Designed as part of the city’s post the 1755 earthquake expansion
planning is still nowadays the main entrance to Lisbon’s downtown.
The aim of this competition was to select young architects, and
make them comply and respond to a plot/brief written by selected
readers and local citizens, expressing their wishes and desires for
the area.
Throughout the last half of 20th century till these days, the city
became car dependent, and the Avenue is the perfect example.
Along with other ambitions, the need to decrease the traffic, and
bring back the pedestrian, was a priority for us architects, and
habitants.
It cannot be only a design solution, but with a strong programmatic
input. Our proposal will create events, commercial and leisure
program, which promote social engagements in a qualified daily
urban space.
The proposal dissociates pedestrian crossings and roads, allowing
permanent continuity of both flows.
New structures will occupy the tree boulevard. Surrounding the
trees, this new equipment will reinforce the day-by-day usage,
upgrading the commercial streets that limit the avenue.
A Av. da Liberdade, em Lisboa, é uma das principais artérias da
cidade. Desenhada como parte do plano de expansão da cidade,
após terramoto de 1755, é a entrada principal na baixa Pombalina.
O objectivo do concurso era selecionar jovens arquitectos, que
pudessem comprometer-se a responder a um plano/guião escrito
por cidadãos selecionados, que expressaram os seus desejos e
ambições para a área.
Desde a segunda metade do século XX até aos nossos dias, a
cidade tornou-se dependente do automóvel, e a Av. da Liberdade
é um perfeito exemplo desta condição. Entre outras ambições, a
necessidade de diminuir o tráfego automóvel, e facilitar a circulação
pedonal, foi uma prioridade para os arquitectos e habitantes.
A acção urbana nunca poderá ser apenas uma solução de desenho,
mas terá que ter uma vertente forte de injecção programática. A
nossa proposta irá gerar eventos, comércio e actividades de lazer,
para promover as interacções sociais e qualificar o dia-a-dia urbano.
A proposta dissocia os atravessamentos pedonais e automóveis,
permitindo uma fruicção pedestre contínua.
Novas estruturas irão ocupar os separadores . Envolvendo a árvores,
estes novos equipamentos irão promover o uso diário social,
reforçando as áreas comerciais do edifícios que limitam a avenida.

Where before was an exclusive touristic destination, Vilamoura
becomes more and more an annual residence city. The avenue Eng,
João Meireles is the front door of the city, where its green/nature
set, becomes the identity for the rest of the urban developments
that sprawl from it.
The avenue divides the city. The residential area in the North and the
Retail/Hotel/Leisure sea front area in the South. As it was designed
only as an entrance to the city, neglected it´s expansion. Nowadays
it must be a transversal connection hub, and a longitudinal leisure
and wellbeing series of infrastructures. The system consists on
several fitness platforms, which are intersected here and there by
other leisure infrastructures, that tries to attract all the demographic
identities that uses the “park”.
Ano após ano,Vilamoura torna-se numa cidade cada vez mais
residencial permanente. A Av. Engº João Meireles continua a ser a
porta de entrada e a imagem urbana inicial da cidade. O resultado
é uma manutenção identitária do “verde”, a requalificação do
percurso longitudinal, a criação de ligações transversais, e a oferta
de equipamentos que irão reforçar a componente hedonística deste
destino turístico de qualidade.
Com uma imagem única, foi criado áreas de repouso, percurso de
manutenção, iluminação consistente e mais segura, e acima de
tudo uma imagem clara e fluida.
A intervenção consiste primordialmente na redifinição formal e
material do percurso central existente, dotá-lo de características
adequadas à bicicleta, passeio, jogging.
Although surrounded by 4 lanes of traffic, which are the main fluxes
of the city’s arrivals, one can isolate itself, at any time of the day
Since it’s conclusion in 2008, the cities annual reports have been
constantly highlighting the impact that this renovation had on the
citizen’s day-by-day life.
Embora rodeada por 4 vias de tráfego, que se caracterizam por ser
os principais fluxos de entrada na cidade, podemo-nos isolar na
Avenida, a cada hora do dia.
Desde a sua conclusão, as avaliações anuais de qualidade de vida,
salientam o impacto positivo que esta renovação tem tido no dia-adia dos cidadãos e dos seus visitantes.

It was first designed as part of the Vilamoura Avenue project. The
main ambition towards its design was adaptation. Verso can easily
integrate itself in every context.
We wanted to create an ambiguous shape, that would be perceived
in different ways, from different angles.
Verso foi desenhado inicialmente, parte do projecto da Avenida de
Vilamoura.O objectivo principal é criar um objecto adaptável, que se
integra perfeitamente em variados contextos.
O desejo era criar uma forma ambígua, que possa ser
percepcionada de diferentes maneiras, de diversos anglos.
The result is a 3-piece object of stainless steel, which are welded
to each other. All the optical systems were carefully taken care by
Soneres, experts on street lighting.
O resultado é um candeeiro de aço inox de 3 peças, soldadas entre
si. Os sistemas ópticos foram desenvolvidos pela Soneres, empresa
especializada em luminárias.
Some signal columns/bollards were designed to be place i.e. next
to crosswalks. Its “motion” optic light aims to prevent direct light to
drivers.
Uma variante de balizadores, foram criados para funcionar junto a
passadeiras para peões. A sua óptica tem um efeito de movimento,
para prevenir que os automobilistas sejam encadeados pela luz.
In 2011 it have received the award for best Iberian urban equipment
design.
Em 2011, o Verso recebeu o prémio Ibérico, como melhor design de
equipamento urbano.

Vilamoura commissioned a toponymy design that needed to
maintain the city’s requirements. The existing street signs are standalone ground objects. Our proposal aimed to be an easy to produce
piece, which would not only provide the required information, but
also blend with the nature setting of the context.
Vilamoura encomendou o novo design das placas toponímicas da
cidade, procurando manter a tipologia actual. As placas existentes
são objectos murais de altura reduzida. A nossa ambição foi criar
peças que possam facilmente ser executadas, que transmitam a
informação de forma clara e directa, mas adaptando-se ao contexto.
The solution consist on very few and simple procedures. Begins
with a single metal sheet, which the profile is cutout, along with the
street and city information. Then, the sheet is folded through several
edges, and finally welding the both tops, filling the back face of the
information.
A solução consiste num processo de passos reduzidos e simples.
Inicia com uma folha metálica única, onde é recortado o perfil da
placa, juntamente com a gravação da informação necessária. De
seguida, a placa é dobrada através de diversas arestas, e finalmente
soldado os topos, e placas de suporte.
The new street signs have started to been implemented in 2009.

The former capital of the Castilla Kingdom, Burgos holds on to it’s
heritage while trying to embrace contemporary methods of keeping
the city economical and cultural importance.
The new Youth House, despite of it’s small scale, will definitely have
a leading role, as it stands in hot spot of the historical centre, facing
the Cathedral, standing on the verge of the night scene, and on the
way of the Santiago’s religious path.
The urban context and program area demands require the maximum
volume possible.
By liberating as much as possible the ground floor, although keeping
the overall volume, the citizens are invited to pass through and get a
glimpse of the events held by the Youth House.
An important part of the program is event/performance oriented, so
by creating an exhibition space that can be opened to the exterior,
the city square becomes part of the intervention.
All the accesses, WC, and storage are placed in the back area, along
the neighbouring building.
The plans have different setbacks from the outdoor “skin”, providing
a more dynamic spatial and visual relations.
Due to its semi-transparency, the way that the citizens will perceive
the Youth House will differ along the day, the working hours, and the
type of usage.
Antiga capital do Reino de Castela, Burgos mantem a sua herança
histórica ao mesmo tempo que tenta alcançar um estatuto regional,
de económica e cultural relevância.
A nova Casa da Juventude, apesar da pequena escala, terá um
carácter importante, face à proximidade da Catedral, da zona
nocturna, e do caminho de Santiago.
A máxima volumetria é uma resposta às exigências programáticas e
do contexto urbano.
Embora mantendo a volumetria geral, libertando ao máximo
possível o piso térreo, os cidadãos são convidados a conhecer mais
de perto a Casa da Juventude e as suas actividades.
Elemento fulcral do programa, o espaço de eventos/performance
abre-se ao exterior, tornando a praça parte integrante da
intervenção.
Os acessos, WC, e áreas técnicas estão situadas no interior, ao
longo do edifício contíguo.
Todos os pisos têm diferentes inclinações face à fachada, criando
relações visuais e espaciais mais dinâmicas.
A semi-transparência da fachada, faz com que o edifício possa ser
percepcionado de forma diversa, ao longo do dia, do horário de
funcionamento, e do tipo de eventos que occorem.

The Dallas Bowl must act as a destination. The site is not yet
cohered with the urban fabric of downtown Dallas, mainly severed
by a series of parking lots.
We propose a 3 fold future urban development: porous densification,
green pockets and corridors, and street “pedestrianization.” By
reducing emphasis on cars and promoting pedestrian and bicycle
movement, we ensure a sustainable expansion of the downtown
area, eventually engulfing Dallas Bowl as part of the urban fabric.
The overall strategy of Dallas Bowl is to incorporate the urban,
environmental, programmatic, and social aspects of this residential
block into a holistic, fully functioning organism, where all elements
of the built and natural environment synergize in a symbiotic
relationship.
With an extensive research by our sustainability consultants, Dallas
Bowl becomes an integrated system dealing with every aspect like
Passive Solar ; BioFuel ; Wind Power ; Rain Collection ; Grey Water
Strategies ; Waste management ; Biomass; etc.
To withstand the financial volatility of the times, the building is
designed in “slices”, such that it can be constructed in phases. This
also allows flexibility of program to meet the housing demands of
the time of construction.
Dallas Bowl terá que ser um destino. O quarteirão não se adapta
ao tecido urbano da baixa de Dallas, fortemente caracterizada
por vários parques de estacionamento. A nossa proposta assenta
em 3 premissas essenciais: densificação porosa, manchas e
corredores verdes, e reforçar os fluxos pedonais. Reduzindo o foco
no automóvel e promovendo os peões e as ciclovias, acreditamos
que a expansão social e humana da baixa possa ser uma realidade,
tornando o Dallas Bowl parte integrante do sistema.
A ambição para o Dallas Bowl passa por incorporar os aspectos
urbanos, ambientais, programáticos, e sociais deste bloco
residencial, num sistema uno e auto suficiente, onde todos os
elementos naturais e artificiais se complementam.
Com a extensiva pesquisa dos nossos consultores de
sustentabilidade, Dallas Bowl torna-se num sistema integrado
auto-suficiente, lidando com aspectos economico-ambientais
como Energia solar passiva e activa; BioFuel ; Energia Eólica ;
armazenamento de água Pluvial; Estratégias de águas Sanitárias;
Gestão de Lixo; Biomassa; etc.
De forma a se defender do contexto económico volátil que
atravessamos, o edifício é desenhado por secções independentes
que juntas fazem o todo. Desta forma podemos fasear não só a
construção, mas criando um edifício evolutivo.

The site is a beautiful, untouched green slope, without any
construction visible in any direction.
The focus of the proposal is a development fully integrated into the
existing topography, with an intimate relationship to the nature.
O local, uma paisagem quase virgem, uma encosta de verde onde
mal se avista construção. A intenção, uma pretensão imobiliária
sustentada pela aceitação dos organismos locais, onde a área de
construção pode corromper irremediavelmente este cenário idílico.
By having vertical glazing facade as the only visible element, the
impact of the building is minimized. The green roofs merge with
the existing greenery to continue a carpet of vegetation across the
site.
O resultado, uma encosta construída que se esconde na vegetação,
onde o espaço interior se confunde com o exterior. O máximo
respeito pelo local. A arquitectura actua quase como elemento
figurante, apesar de corresponder aos desejos dos seus habitantes.
A construction grid of 10m x 10m, with an average of 100m2 per
unit, gives the future tenants a possibility to customize their own
apartments, free of interior structural elements. The typologies can
be combined, and therefore become more or less generous in terms
of space.
In the lower zone of the condo, a series of social/sports/leisure
areas are designed as well part of the landscape, in order to
emphasize the notion of total escape from the city.
A grelha do projecto cria módulos habitacionais de 100 m2 com
estrutura periférica, que consoante as necessidades se dividem ou
se agrupam, permitindo uma grande flexibilidade tipológica.
Os espaços sociais encontram-se no ponto inferior do condomínio,
aproveitando a zona plana do terreno. Vários equipamentos como
quadra de futebol, piscina, áreas para crianças, academia, e zona
de restaurante/bar, funcionam quase como uma espécie de palco
de teatro grego, onde os terraços das habitações se tornam as
bancadas onde o espectador contempla a peça e a paisagem.

The Crown is an architectural proposal for an Intercontinental Hotel,
International Business Center (IBC), and Luxury Apartments in
Armenia’s capital, Yerevan.
Composed of three buildings at the pinnacle point of Yerevan’s
northern skyline, the building forms a crown on the skyline to
reminisce the golden ages of Armenian history, when its kingdom
spanned between the Caspian and Mediterranean seas. The Crown
of Armenia provides contemporary facilities and accommodation
for travel and commerce, to facilitate the economic growth of the
nation.
An extensive podium of social/cultural/sports/parking areas
spreads and connects the three buildings, resulting on an integrated
system, generating the social dynamics needed.
To establish an hierarchical relation, the Intercontinental Hotel sits
closer to the city, opening diagonally to the city grid.
The Crown é uma proposta que engloba o novo Intercontinental
Hotel, um Centro Internacional de Negócios, e apartamentos de
luxo, em Yerevan na Arménia.
Composto por três edifícios na extremidade norte da cidade, a
composição surge como uma coroa na silhueta urbana, como uma
reminiscência das eras de ouro da história da Armenia, quando o
seu reino se estendia desde o Mar Cáspio e até ao Mediterrâneo.
Os novos edifícios estão dotados de uma arquitectura e serviços
contemporâneos, destinado ao negócio, apoiando o crescimento
económico da nação.
As variadas áreas sociais comuns, espalham-se horizontalmente
através de um plateau que invade pontualmente o piso térreo
dos três edifícios, criando uma network programática. O Hotel
Intercontinental sofre um desvio de orientação, para que assuma o
seu papel de referência de toda a intervenção.

The approach of the design, was how to look at Dubai beyond the
hype and ostentation , and perhaps identify a certain kind of beauty
that is constant and permanent, throughout history. The highly
religious component, is the backbone of the society.
That way, the ambition was to keep the building as invisible as
possible, counter posing the contemprary trend of exposure. We
hope this way, the traditons and heritage can come forward, and
mark the place.
The Mosque of the Domes reforms the typical shape of the mosque,
to bring the experience of the domes much closer to the visitors.
Intelligence is not invested on superficial effects, but in structural
and conceptual logic that offers a new kind of performance and
functionality - a universal architecture. The entire structure of the
mosque is standing on 5 massive pillars to symbolize the 5 pillars
of the Islamic faith. On top of the mosque is a library that holds the
holy texts.

Se olharmos para o Dubai, além do hiato de construção e o excesso
ostensivo do crescimento económico, captamos a identidade do
local, através da sua tradição. Apesar das grandes transformações,
a forte componente religiosa na sociedade mantêm-se.

A proposta parte do pressuposto contrariar a envolvente. A cidade
muda, mas a tradição é constante. Deste modo a nova mesquita
será simples, não ostentando a sua imagem exterior, porque o seu
significado é de busca de riqueza interior.
As grandes referências deste locais de oração, nomeadamente as
cúpulas, tornam-se mais tangíveis e próximas, ao definirem apenas
o espaço interior, exluindo-se de se tornarem o elemento icónico.
As cúpulas são sustentadas por 5 pilares, que representam
os 5 pilares da fé islâmica. Embora se queira um objecto com
um elevado grau de austeridade, não se elimina de todo a
ornamentação. Esta surge nas abobadas, dando significado a cada
espaço.

Following the challenge of WALLPAPER* Magazine, to develop
an infill-house, the approach was to find a typical Porto 19th
century house, just around the corner, and satisfy both worlds the Wallpaper challenge / the Porto center rehab challenge. The
typical typology in of the 19th century buildings gets in conflict
with contemporary living. Like the Mondrian grid, each room must
adjust to its needs. For that, the inner typical staircase and services
move to the side, allowing more flexibility on the definition of the
program.
The house shuffles according to desire, needs, and challenges. The
facade also reflects an approach meant to merge the old and the
new. The windows follow a more flexible and truthful relation to the
interior space.
The traditional tiles gains another dimension and scale, in order to
show itself more at a longer distance. This project works as a study
case in the city, since the amount of similar conditons are very
common. Still it performs with a level of flexibility, so it can adapt to
the different realities.
O desafio foi lançado pela revista Wallpaper*. A edição anual de
arquitectura/design considerou os ONOFFICE como um dos 25
novos gabinetes de Arquitectura a ter em conta, e para isso lançou o
desafio de apresentar um projecto. O objectivo seria criar uma casa
urbana, inserida num quarteirão.
Sendo a representação de uma arquitectura do Porto e de Portugal,
a ideia imediata foi encontrar um local típico, onde a proposta
pudesse sustentar-se, e eventualmente criar oportunidade de
negócio.
A proposta define-se em 4 pressupostos: Uma fatia lateral do
volume, albergando as escadas, WCs, e cozinha, e serviços, liberta o
restante espaço; Cada compartimento terá a dimensão e proporção
que seja necessário; A fachada corresponde ao que se desenvolve
no interior; O revestimento em azulejo adquire uma escala de maior
visibilidade.
Este projecto deu a possibilidade de desenvolver um Study Case, de
reinterpretação da casa tipo Portuense, onde agora as necessidades
actuais definem a arquitectura.

What a small city like Águeda gain with an Art Center? The conditions
of the region, and the actual economic context, require a different
approach on the typical cultural policy. Creating a Center that will
merely host external exhibitions, might result in a failure, as the economical and geographical position of the city, can be an obstacle.
Therefore, the new Art Center has to a very actvie educational identity.
Should produce new artists, a new movement, not only exhibit!
Supporting this concept, is the fact that the new Art Center stands
in the way of the main paths to the local schools. For that, the
center needs to make itself inviting, permeable.
Also for the urban conditions, being on the frontier between the city
center and the residential area, must deal with this binomial condition. It blends with the hill residence on the north, hiding itself, and
opens to the south, to the city, by a permeable facade.
Educational introspection, and showbiz exposure can be achieved
this way.
In order to avoid any kind of distinction between the different
identities of the program, the building spreads out through the
site, setting an horizontal hierarchy.
Visitors will roam through the building without a defined path, so
it can be triggered freely.
Qual o grande benefício para uma cidade pequena como Águeda,
ter um centro de artes? A cidade e região, não possuem os
argumentos demográficos e económicos necessários, para que
sustentem um Centro de Artes que tenha como objectivo principal,
a exposição de Arte. A grande oportunidade no caso, é criar uma
estrutura que potencie a criação e educação da Arte, produzindo, e
possivelmente exportando novos artistas locais.
Águeda terá que ser um produtor de arte, e não apenas um
consumidor.
O CAA tem como objectivo ser um local de educação e produção
artística.
Suportando este conceito, está o facto de o local de intervenção ser
tão próximo das escolas da cidade, encontrando-se no caminho do
percurso diário dos estudantes.
Deste modo é um edifício fachada, um edifício montra. Algo que
convide e aguçe o apetite dos “novos” criadores.
Urbanisticamente, o edifício apodera-se do local, abrindo-se à
cidade a sul, e respeitando a área residencial onde se insere, a
norte. O programa quer-se horizontal, sem hierarquias. Dessa
forma, o programa extende-se pelo terreno, abrindo-se em leque,
criando espaços intersticiais.

The program brief had such a big spectrum of uses, conditions,
needs, demographics, which had to be addressed as the driving force
of the project. Should farmers be alongside with designers? Should
they interact? Should they be as spread apart as possible? If the idea
is to create a multi-programmatic building, than the proposal is for
a full way interaction between all the entities. Part of the brief, the
extension of the existing city market became the footprint for our
architectural approach. The site plot would become the covered fair.
For that we extended the existing grid, extruded diagonally the mass,
creating inner streets, galleries, loggias, and urban spaces. Everything
is on display - design, agriculture, local products, art, and commerce.
On the upper levels, the extruded masses will join, reinforcing the
confrontation of all the characters, or providing bigger areas for the
more demanding programs. Unexpected relations, shapes, views,
and spaces would occur here and there, reinforcing the idea that this
project is all about confrontation/communication.
Com um ambicioso programa de usos, de diferentes utilizadores,
certas questões tiveram que ser respondidas, definindo a proposta.
Os agricultores deverão interagir com os designers? Deverá ser
mantido uma distância institucional?
Se o programa pede um edifício multi-programático, então o
edifício deverá ser uma única força de interacção. A grande relação
física com a feira semanal da cidade, e com algum do programa
relacionado com a mesma, fez com que o layout do piso térreo
fosse uma extensão da grelha da feira. No entanto para albergar
certas actividades, propôs-se que a continuação da feira de torna-se
num mercado coberto. Para isso o layout extrude-se diagonalmente,
criando galerias/ruas internas.
O novo mercado é diverso e multifuncional, onde todos os produtos
estão dispostos para o consumidor: design, agricultura, produtos
locais, comércio, restauração, etc. A confrontação saudável de
identidades díspares, sempre foi a força motriz da evolução.

Embedded in a small lot, the building reinterprets the traditional
organization of Porto’s houses, and it’s contemporary limitations.
The minimum width of the plot, along with the poor natural light
conditions, become the main problems to tackle.
The clients, a young couple, require flexible spaces, which will deal
with different conditions through time.
The open plan layout, is intersected by a service/stairs volume,
responsible for organizing the spaces. The program is at any time,
open and undefined, resulting in a strategy that allows multiple
possibilities for spatial mutation.
The service block is mirror cladded, extending the depth of the
spaces they organize.
These floor plans are an example of the several layouts that the
system provides.
The building becomes a translucent box (polycarbonate) seeking to
capture as much light as possible, while keeping it’s privacy.
Inserido num pequeno lote, a construção actual segue a organização
tradicional das casas do Porto, com as suas características e
limitações. A largura mínima do lote e a pobre exposição à luz
natural são as grandes condicionantes.
Os clientes, um casal jovem, requerem espaços flexíveis, para que
se possam adaptar às necessidades ao longo do tempo.
A planta livre, é interceptada por um volume de serviços ,
responsável pela organização dos espaços. O programa é a cada
momento aberto e indefinido, resultando numa estratégia que
permite múltiplas configurações.
O bloco de serviços é espelhado, dando profundidade aos espaços
limitados pela largura do lote.
Estas plantas são apenas uma das possíveis configurações, que o
sistema permite.
A casa torna-se uma caixa translúcida (policarbonato) tentando
captar o máximo de luz natural, mantendo a noção de privacidade.

The commission is for the renovation of a family villa, on the
countryside. Still, it is supposed to become the yearly fixed
residence, therefore the house needs to adapt for the daily needs.
The existing condition is of a stone house, lacking natural light due
to the few openings, and with an interior layout very confined and
with small compartments. Also, with the interior spaces needing
a severe refurbishment, there is the necessity for a more radical
attitude.
We figured that the interior should be done by scratch, and only
the stone facade is to be kept. As it became obvious that the
social areas should relate directly to the exterior, new openings
were created. Still, to improve the gain of natural light, the Private
volume on the 1st floor is offset from the facade.
The swimming pool is a common commodity in this area, but with
an average use of maximum 4 months/year, the client demanded
a solution for a more permanent exercise. Instead of implementing
temporary retractable structures, we slid the pool inside of the
house. A 10x2 meter lane can always be used throughout the year.
The social areas are combined in the ground floor, and all the rooms
are placed above. The spaces follow the conceptual approach. The
upper volume is denser, liberating the social plan.
A renovação de uma habitação familiar fora da cidade, com o
objectivo de ser a residência permanente, necessita de alterações
consideráveis.
Uma casa em alvenaria de pedra, que carece de luz natural
pelas poucas aberturas existentes, e com espaços interiores
excessivamente compartimentados. Necessitando de uma forte
renovação no interior, faz com que uma atitude radical mais
eficiente, seja adoptada.
A conclusão é que o interior deverá ser totalmente novo, mantendo
apenas a fachada. Sendo óbvio que as áreas sociais têm ligação
com o exterior, abrem-se novos vãos. Para ganhar mais luz natural,
o volume dos quartos retrai-se, criando uma área exterior entre si e
a fachada.
As piscinas exteriores são um requisito habitual na área, mas com
uma média de utilização de apenas 4 meses por ano, exigiu-se
uma solução permanente. Não querendo implementar estruturas
temporárias, inserimos parte da piscina exterior, no interior da
casa. Uma pista de 10x2 metros pode ser usada ao longo do ano.
As áreas sociais são agrupadas no piso térreo, enquanto todos os
quartos se encontram no 1º piso. Os espaços seguem a estratégia
conceptual. O volume superior, mais denso, liberta a planta social.
