C
onsiderada uma das mais belas paisagens do Sul do Brasil, Faxinal do Céu município de Pinhão, 340 km de Curitiba
(PR) - é sede do 39° Campeonato Mundial Militar de Orientação do Conselho
Internacional do Esporte Militar (CISM). O
campeonato, organizado pelo Ministério da
Defesa, por meio do Conselho Desportivo
Militar do Brasil, carrega o lema “Amizade
através do esporte”. Equipes femininas e
masculinas vão representar cerca de 30
países num grande encontro esportivo.

Primavera é a estação e o local
escolhido para as disputas está a
uma altitude de 1.100m acima do
nível do mar. Possui uma grande diversidade de fauna e flora natural da
região. A vegetação está inserida na
paisagem da mata de araucária com
clima subtropical úmido, clima predominante no estado do Rio Grande
do Sul. Faxinal do Céu oferece um
clima ameno no verão, máxima de
25°C e temperaturas abaixo de zero

que cresceu consideravelmente
no cenário esportivo militar. Mais
de 300 desportistas estarão buscando uma só meta: superar seus
recordes. Munidos com bússolas
e mapas nas mãos, os participantes enfrentarão os desafios
que cada novo percurso trará. O
Brasil irá sediar pela terceira vez
um Campeonato Mundial Militar de
Orientação, o primeiro foi em 1983
na cidade de Curitiba (PR) teve
a participação de nove países, e
o segundo na capital do Brasil,
Brasília (DF) em 1992, que contou
com a participação de 12 países.

no inverno. A previsão do tempo para
o período do campeonato é de tempo
claro, com a temperatura girando em
torno de 18° a 20°C. A umidade relativa do ar, nessa época, varia entre
40% a 80%. Todas essas mudanças
de clima provocam diferenças interessantes no comportamento da flora
e acaba oferecendo um espetáculo
de cores e formas na natureza.
BRAZIL WARMLY WELCOMES THE TEAMS
T
hought over as one of the most beautiful landscapes of southern Brazil,
Faxinal do Céu – under Pinhão jurisdiction and 350 kilometres away from
Curitiba – is the headquarters of the 39th World Military Orienteering Championship of the International Military Sports Council (CISM). The championship,
which has been organized by the Ministry of Defence, by means of the Brazilian
Military Sports Commission (CDMB) supported by the South Military Command,
carries the motto “Friendship Through Sport”. During this great sports meeting,
thirty countries are contesting the first place, and as long as just one of them
will get it, may the best win.
Consisting of athletes, coaches and organizers, some 700 people are going
to be together for the Military Orienteering, which has, over the years, considerably grown in the military sports scenario. Over 300 competitors have the
same aim: to overcome the limitations they may be imposed to. Equipped with
compasses and maps, the participants will face the challenges brought about
by every new course. This is the third time that Brazil hosts a World Military
Orienteering Championship, being the first one in 1983 in Curitiba, which
counted on 9 countries. The second time was in 1992 in Brasília, the Capital
City of the country, with the participation of 12 countries.

Spring is the season and the
place chosen for the contest lies at
1,100 metres above the sea level.
The region encompasses a great
variety of natural flora and fauna. Its
landscape displays a rich vegetation
among the araucaria woods, amid a
humid subtropical climate, which is
the predominant in the Paraná state. Faxinal do Céu presents a light
weather with temperatures not higher than 25ºC in the summer, and
ones even below zero in the winter.

The weather forecast for the period
of time in which the championship
takes place points to clear weather
with temperatures ranging from
18ºC to 20ºC. The relative humidity
appears between 40% and 80%.
Normally, the changes of the weather mentioned above give rise to
interesting differences in the flora
behaviour, bringing about a beautiful
spectacle of colours and shapes in
the surrounding nature.

Centro de Capacitação Faxinal do Céu
tem toda estrutura
para receber os atletas de orientação.
Além de acomodações e espaços para
reuniões oficiais, a
sede do 39° Campeonato conta com um refeitório, duas
cantinas, um posto dos Correios, lavanderia, Bancos, Centro Médico 24
horas e o CISM Clube.
Para o lazer dos integrantes das
delegações, com TV e DVD, bar e área
de jogos, o CISM Clube irá funcionar
de 07 às 23h, nas instalações do Clube
do Bosque. No dia seis de novembro,
os atletas irão participar do Coquetel
“Quebra Gelo”. O primeiro evento
informal com todos os participantes!
No cardápio: comida brasileira.
Quem precisar de qualquer informação, e quiser se “orientar” no
Brasil basta ir até o Setor de Apoio,
localizado no Auditório Jean Jacques
Rousseau. Lá os atletas também contarão com computadores conectados
à internet na sala Help-Desk.

banking, an around-the-clock medical care, and the CISM club.
Aimed at assuring leisure activity
for the members of the delegations,
the CISM club, occupying the facilities
of the Clube do Bosque and equipped
with TV and DVD player, a bar and an
area for games, will be open from 7am
to 11pm. On November the 6th the
athletes will take part in a get-together
called “Ice-breaking Cocktail”, which
is first informal event gathering all
the people participating in the championship. The menu: Brazilian food.
Furthermore, whoever in need of
any kind of information and willing
to “orient” himself or herself within
Brazil, has just to head to the Support
Division available at the Jean Jacques
Rousseau auditorium, where the
competitors can also count on a helpdesk provided with internet conected
computers.

A ORIENTAÇÃO NO BRASIL
A Corrida de Orientação começou na Suécia por volta o ano de 1900.
Depois de 70 anos, o Brasil conheceu o esporte, a partir de uma visita à Europa. Alguns militares brasileiros se interessaram e foram
observar pessoalmente as competições de Orientação do Conselho
Internacional de Esportes Militares (CISM).
No ano seguinte (1971), a corrida de Orientação foi incluída como
modalidade esportiva nas Forças Armadas. O pioneiro do esporte,
Coronel Tolentino Paz, organizou as primeiras competições militares
no Brasil. Em 1974, o desporto Orientação foi incluído no currículo
da Escola de Educação Física do Exército (EsEFEx) como uma disciplina obrigatória. No mesmo ano, também foi editada a primeira
publicação técnica brasileira sobre o esporte orientação. Em 1986
e 1987 o Professor de Educação Física Leduc Fauth, acompanhado
dos suecos Ulf Levin e Göran Öhlund, realizou uma campanha de
divulgação do esporte em todo o Brasil, promovendo atividades em
várias cidades.
Em 15 de dezembro de 1996 foi realizado em São José dos Campos, Estado de São Paulo, o primeiro Troféu Brasil de Orientação,
que se tornou o precursor dos Cinco Dias de Orientação do Brasil.
Esta competição culminou com uma reunião, na presença de várias
personalidades do esporte, onde foram definidos os primeiros passos
para a criação da Confederação Brasileira de Orientação, criada em
1999, na cidade de Guarapuava, Paraná. Hoje, a Confederação tem
sede em Santa Maria, no Rio Grande do Sul.
the Orienteering history applied to Brazil
Orienteering began in Sweden around 1900. Brazil got to know the
sport some 70 years later as a result of a visit to Europe by Brazilian
military officers, when they became interested in the activity and
decided to observe the competitions brought into being by CISM at
the time.
In the following year (1971), Orienteering was taken to the Brazilian
Armed Forces as a sports activity. Colonel Tolentino Paz, considered
the pioneer of such a sport in the country, is the one who organized
the first military competitions in Brazil. In 1974 Orienteering began
to be part of the Army Physical Education School (EsEFEX) curriculum
as a compulsory discipline and, in the same year, the first Brazilian
technical publication on orienteering came out. Then, in 1986 and
1987, a Physical Education Professor named Leduc Fanth along with
Ulf Lenin and Göran Öhlmd, both from Sweden, successfully carried
out a campaign aiming at making Orienteering known in several major
cities throughout the country.
On November the 15th 1996 the Orienteering Brazil Trophy, first
championship in the country, took place in São José dos Campos city,
São Paulo state. This competition resulted in a meeting attended by
several sports celebrities, when the first steps for the creation of the
Brazilian Orienteering League were defined. Finally created in 1999,
the League was firstly based in Guarapuava town, Paraná state. Currently, the League Headquarters lies in Santa Maria city, Rio Grande
do Sul state.

2004, o General-de-Brigada Archias
Alves de Almeida Neto passou por
dezenas de campeonatos militares.
Vice-Presidente do CISM para as
Américas e chefe de Delegação representante do Brasil no esporte militar
mundial, o General Archias se mostra entusiasmado com o Mundial de
Orientação. Confira a entrevista:
Qual a sua expectativa para o
mundial?
GA-”Que tudo corra muito bem. Nós
tínhamos três desafios grandes neste ano,
três campeonatos mundiais militares. Já
passamos por dois com sucesso. Agora,
espero que a organização seja do mesmo
padrão. O pessoal envolvido conhece o
assunto, participou de outros mundiais,
tem experiência. A organização de um
campeonato mundial militar para um país
é sempre importante. Ele não só projeta o
nosso trabalho dentro do esporte militar e

belonging to the Ministry of Defence,
Brigadier General Archias Alves de
Almeida Neto has experienced tens
of military sports championships.
CISM Vice-President to the Americas and Head of Brazil’s delegation
to the world military sport, General
Archias is a real enthusiast on world
orienteering. Ascertain that by reading the interview below.
What is your expectation for this
world orienteering championship?
GA: I do expect everything to go all
right. We have had three great challenges so far this year, which are the
World Military Championships. We have
succeeded in two of them, and I hope

GA -”Sem dúvida. A participação do
Brasil nos três mundiais é importante por
conta da experiência que ganharemos
ao longo destes campeonatos. Demonstraremos também, ao CISM, a capacidade
de organizar campeonatos no Brasil. Sabemos que organizar os Jogos Mundiais
Militares é muito mais complexo, mas
temos recebido muito apoio do Ministério da Defesa e do Ministério do Esporte.
Acredito que se o escolhido for o Brasil,
vamos cumprir muito bem a missão”.
O senhor já participou de alguma
competição de Orientação?
GA- “Eu fui atleta de orientação,
mas não do nível de um mundial. Na
época, competi pela equipe do então
Comando do IV Exército... Isso foi em
1980, na cidade de Recife, em Pernambuco. Cheguei a conquistar o 2º lugar
individual e por equipe”.
Qual o recado o senhor tem para
os atletas?

kind of preparation for it?
GA: By all means. Brazil’s participation
in three world championships has been
important considering all the experience
we have been gaining through these
competitions. We also intend to show
CISM how capable we are in terms of
organizing the championships to be hosted in the country. We are aware that
organizing the World Military Games is
far more complex, but we have had the

Have you ever taken part in any
orienteering competition?
GA: Although not at the level of a
world championship, I used to be an
orienteering athlete. I used to compete
for the 4th Army Command Team...This
was in 1980 in Recife city, Pernambuco
state. I could achieve the second place,
both individual and collective.
What is your message for the
athletes?
GA: We would like all the athletes
to know that we are delighted to have
them in our country. May this championship be more the means for strengthening the “friendship through sport”
than just a dispute for medals.
