6) CLINICAL, RESEARCH AND TEACHING INTERESTS:
Clinical Interests:
My main clinical interests rely on the imaging diagnosis and follow-up of Head
and Neck and Central Nervous System neoplasms through the use of
Ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET-CT and PET-MRI, integrated in a multidisciplinary
team (Tumor Boards). I am particularly interested in the use of MR volumetry,
spectroscopy, diffusion/ diffusion tensor imaging and perfusion as biomarkers of
disease activity, progression and prognosis and in the early detection of
complications of chemo and radiation therapies and their differential diagnosis
from recurrent tumor.
22
Research Interests:
My main research interests rely on the creation of diagnostic algorithms and
flowcharts based on Bayesian statistical models to set the foundation for
evidence based diagnosis and management of Head and Neck and CNS tumor
patients; finding imaging biomarkers which predict response to treatment and
prognosis non-invasively; validate the role of PWI (perfusion-weighted MRI)
and BOLD imaging (blood oxygen dependent level) as biomarkers of
angiogenesis in high grade gliomas and their role in predicting response to
radiation and anti-angiogenic treatments (Bevacizumab); understanding the
role of oral cavity microbiome in the development of post-RT complications,
particularly in the development of mandibular and maxillary radiation necrosis;
finding early biomarkers of perineural tumor spread in patients with squamous
cell cancer of the head and neck; unravelling the mechanisms of late recurrence
in patients with salivary gland malignancies; develop new MR contrast agents
for molecular targeting in oncobiology.
Teaching Interests:
I am interested in graduate and post-graduate teaching of head and neck
radiology and neuroradiology, specifically, in the field of head and neck
oncology and on continuing to collaborate with the ESHNR and ESNR in
providing accredited European fellowships. I am also interested in a continuing
collaboration with the ESR, Erasmus and ESMRI in providing post-graduate
courses to all professionals involved in the treatment, management and followup of patients with Head and Neck tumors.
