INTERPRETATION (1985 – 1988, 1994-2000)
COORDINATOR of the "PARANÁ BASIN STUDY GROUP" (GT BACIA DO
PARANÁ), 1985-1986, leading a group of 9 geoscientists that reevaluated all
aspects of the petroleum geology of the Paleozoic Paraná Basin, and defined
several plays and the areas with the highest potential for petroleum
exploration within the basin.
The results were later tested by
PETROBRAS/NEXPAR (created as a result of this study group’s
recommendations), via extensive seismic acquisition and drilling of 5
exploratory wells, the last of which discovered the Barra Bonita gas field. This
discovery led to the discovery of the Mato Rico gas field. Nine scientific
publications (articles, abstracts) were published as a result of these studies
(see list in next chapter).
CHIEF GEOLOGIST of the BRAZILIAN INTERIOR BASINS SECTOR of the
Exploration Department (DEPEX/SEBINT), 1987-1988, in charge of
supervising all exploratory activities in the interior basins of Brazil (Paraná,
Parnaíba, Amazonas, Solimões, all Paleozoic in age, and São Francisco and
Parecis, of Proterozoic age). During this time I acquired great experience in
all aspects of the petroleum geology of the Brazilian Paleozoic basins, where
oil is already being produced in the Solimões Basin and discoveries of gas are
being developed in the Amazonas and Paraná Basins. I was also responsible
for conducting an exploratory program in the Proterozoic São Francisco Basin,
where three wells had been drilled; two of which discovered small amounts of
Precambrian indigenous gas.
CHIEF GEOLOGIST of the BRAZILIAN INTERIOR BASINS SECTOR of the
Exploration Department (DEPEX/DITEC/SEBINT), 1994-1996, in charge of
conducting all exploratory activities in the new frontier interior basins of Brazil,
such as Acre (Paleozoic/Mesozoic), Parecis (Proterozoic/Paleozoic) Tacutu
(Mesozoic), and São Francisco (Proterozoic). Also responsible for the
Remote Sensing section of the Exploration Department.
COORDINATOR of Exploratory Projects of Northern and Northeastern Brazil
(onshore and offshore), Exploration Department (E&P/GEINOF/COPEXNOR), 01/08/96-31/08/98, in charge of supervising technically and
economically all exploratory activities in the onshore sedimentary basins of
Solimões, Amazonas, Parnaíba, Parecis, and in the offshore basins of
northern and northeastern Brazil
COORDINATOR of Exploratory Evaluation of Deep Water Petroliferous
Systems of Brasil, E&P Department (E&P/GEREX/ASPAP), 01/09/9817/05/00, in charge of (i) coordinating regional geological projects aimed to
improve the efficiency of deep water exploration, (ii) helping to orient the
company’s investments in this area, and (iii) disseminating technological
knowledge in the company in order to reduce overall exploratory risks.
TECHNICAL CONSULTANT for exploration, E&P Department, 18/05/0029/02/04.
SENIOR CONSULTANT for exploration projects, E&P Department, 01/03/0431/05/12 – Founding and permanent (since 2001) member of the technical
peer review committees (COMEXP, GRLOC and GRBLOC) for all exploratory
drilling locations and concessions of Petrobras (domestic and worldwide). Coauthor of SIPLEX (Exploration Planning System), in-house software
responsible for the evaluation of geologic risks, estimation of the chance of
success for exploratory drilling locations and for the planning of the exploration
portfolio and exploratory campaign of the company. Technical leader of the
team that mapped the ultradeep seismic sections shot by ION-GXT in the
offshore basins of Espírito Santo, Campos, Santos and Pelotas in Brazil; and
in the continental margin of Angola, Congo and Gabão. The methodology and
mapping concepts developed in this project were unique and led to a
revolutionary way of looking at deep crustal framework of passive margins.
B) INTERNATIONAL EXPLORATION (BRASPETRO)

worked from 1989 to 1993, 5 years)

INTERPRETATION (1989 – 1993)
CHIEF GEOLOGIST FOR THE MIDDLE EAST AREA (AORME) (01/01/89??/??/91).
(a) I was responsible for the project of re-evaluation of the Cretaceous North
Field, Block 5, offshore Qatar, conducted by Braspetro in order to develop
this non-conventional Cretaceous-reservoired oil accumulations. Submitted
to and approved by QGPC. Participated fully on all aspects of the discussion
of the contract in Doha. No contract was signed, however, because of last
minute changes in Petrobras foreign policies.
(b) Participated in a geological integration project concerning the People's
Democratic Republic of Yemen, followed by technical and economical
analyses in Aden and Sana of a farm-in in Strake’s Block 6.
(c) Coordinated minor geological reviews on Syria, Jordan and Israel, and
evaluated numerous farm-out proposals and various offers of partnership in
different ventures submitted to Braspetro.
(d) For circa one year, I was also responsible for supervising Braspetro's
activities in the Gulf of Mexico, where the company held interests in 30
blocks.
(e) Evaluated several farm-out proposals in the Gulf, as well as conducted
minor interpretation jobs regarding the location of appraisal wells in some
discoveries.
CHIEF GEOLOGIST FOR THE AFRICA-EUROPE-FAR EAST AREA (AFEO)
(??/??/91-01/10/92)
(a) I was responsible for supervising Braspetro's activities in the North Sea,
where the company held interests in several blocks.
(b) Participated in the task force that analyzed blocks offered in the 14th
Bidding Round of the UKCS in a bidding group with several companies
(Total, Conoco, Montedson) (October 1992), in London.
(c) Participated in internal task force that analyzed blocks offered in bidding
in shallow waters of Angola (Blocks 7 and 9), Rio and Luanda. Evaluated
deepwater acreage in offshore Angola.
(d) Analyzed numerous farm-out proposals in offshore West Africa, Far East
and Australia; as well as in onshore northern Africa (Argelia, Tunisia and
Lybia).
EXPLORATION MANAGER OF THE LYBIAN BRANCH OF BRASPETRO
(July/September 1993)
(a) Supervised the drilling of well NC 166-B1 in the Sirte Basin, analyzed its
results and integrated them in the regional geological context.

(a) Participated in a complete integrated study project dealing with the virgin
San Julian Basin, offshore Argentina, that resulted in the drilling of one well.
Discussion and presentation of the results to several companies (BHP,
PECTEN, NORCEN, YPF, PLUSPETROL).
(b) Evaluated several areas for bidding rounds in Venezuela, Bolívia and
Peru.
C) TEACHING ACTIVITIES
•
INSTRUCTOR OF INTERNAL SHORT-COURSES
INSTRUCTOR of structural geology and tectonics for the Exploration area of
Petrobras for 25 uninterrupted years (since 1987), teaching the course “Estilos
Tectonicos” (40 to 72 hours), as part of the company's training program for
explorationists. Circa 600 geologists and geophysicists have attended the
class through one to two courses per year. Courses were taught at different
levels (introductory to advanced), but mostly advanced, throughout different
units of Petrobras in Brazil and in the foreign offices (Colombia, Argentina,
Lybia, Turkey).
INSTRUCTOR of specific exploration techniques in deepwater and ultradeepwater realms for the Exploration area of Petrobras since 2001, teaching
the course “Exploração em Águas Profundas/Ultra-Profundas” (24 hours), as
part of the company's training program for explorationists. Circa 200
geologists and geophysicists have attended the class through two to three
courses per year. Courses were taught at advanced level throughout different
units of Petrobras in Brazil and in the foreign offices (Argentina, USA, Turkey).
INSTRUCTOR of occasional short-courses of different subjects related to
petroleum geology, to geologists, geophysicists, engineers and technicians of
the company.
