SYNTHESIS OF BIOLOGICALY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS BASED ON NATURAL PRODUCT CORES Ângelo de Fátima Department of Chemistry, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG, 31270-901, Brazil Plant-derived natural products (PDNPs) are excellent prototypes for the design of new compounds capable of improving quality of life. Indeed, the diversity of chemical structures make these PDNPs attractive for food and agricultural industries, as well as for pharmaceutical purposes [1]. However, in some cases, natural products supply for industrial and therapeutic uses is a challenge because of the low yields found in nature and seasonal accumulation variability. In this lecture, I will present the approaches we have been using to synthesize PDNPs of agricultural and pharmaceutical interests. In this context, it will be presented examples of modified natural products [2,3] and synthetic compounds bearing a natural product pharmacophore [4,5].
