Graduated in Medicine, he decided for the academic career and obtained his MsC and PhD Degrees in Biochemistry at UFRGS, also spending two years of Post Doctoral training at the Institute of Psychiatry of the University of London. His academic career includes more than 110 scientific papers, supervision of 14 Masters and 10 PhDs on neuroscience - mainly on memory neurobiology, brain ischemia and neuro-protection. Prof. Ricardo Augusto Cassel – Engineering School, UFRGS Short Biography/Research Interest - Professor at the Production Engineering Department at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He has experience in Production Engineering with emphasis on Design, Planning and Control of Production Systems, Business Process Management, Operational Research and Supply Chain Management. Prof. Luiz Carlos Pinto Silva Filho-Director of the School of Engineering, UFRGS Short Biography/Research Interest – Professor of civil engineering with experience in the areas of materials and civil engineering structures , with emphasis on topics: durability and service life of structures , condition of buildings, special concrete , composite materials, structural strengthening , analysis and modeling of structural systems , nondestructive testing , effects high temperature structures, fire safety and panic, skills and assessment of building systems . Prof. Walter Collischonn- Hydraulic Research Institute, UFRGS Short Biography/Research Interest - Professor of Hydraulic Research. His research is focused on the mathematical representation of hydrological processes with emphasis on large-scale hydrology, including flood forecasting, hydrological model development, water resources management and analysis of the interactions between climate and hydrology. He leads the Large Scale Hydrology research group at where he is actively involved in the development of the MGB-IPH hydrological model and several other tools for hydrology and water management as SAD-IPH and SIAQUA. She is a specialist in synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles for passive or active drug vectorization. By establishing partnerships, her research group develops processes and products of interest to pharmochemical business and pharmaceutical sectors, holding 50 patents. Technology transfers resulted in 7 nanotechnology products on the market for Brazilian companies. The research is focused on molecular prototypes to develop new antidepressant and analgesic drugs from species of Hypericum and Valeriana genera. The research involves chemical composition studies of these genera, mainly dimeric phloroglucinols (Hypericum) and iridoids (Valeriana). The dimeric phloroglucinols have been proposed as chemotaxonomic marker of Hypericum species from South Brazil. Moreover, coumarins from species of the genus Pterocaulon (Asteaceae) are studied. Email: [email protected] Lund University Prof. Olov Sterner – Dean of Science, Chemistry Department Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest - The research area of Prof. Sterner is broadly biologically active secondary metabolites, isolated primarily from fungi and plants. The studies focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms for certain biological activities and the development of potentially useful drug candidates. Examples of on-going projects are: Development of novel ligands for the benzodiazepine binding site of the GABAA receptor that possess selective anxiolytic activity, Selective inhibitors of the transcription complex NF-kB based on semisynthetic damsin analogues that have improved selectivity for cancer cells, Covalent inhibition of the transcription factor STAT3 in order to stop cell growth and reactivate apoptosis in cancer cells based on analogues of galiellalactone. Email: [email protected] Prof. Stacey Ristinmaa Sörensen -Pro Vice-Chancellor, Director of the Department for Synchotron physics, Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest – She graduated with a PhD in physics from the Chemical Physics Institute at the University of Oregon, USA. She has worked on experiments using synchrotron radiation and XUV lasers mainly on molecules and molecular materials at a variety of facilities world wide. Dr Sorensen was previously employed at the Royal Institute of Technology, and has been professor at Lund University since 2003 where she is head of the division of synchrotron radiation research. She was vice Dean of the Science Faculty (research) from 2006-2011, and is presently pro vice chancellor responsible for research and research infrastructures at Lund University. She has been a member of the board of the Swedish Research Council and of the MAX IV National Synchroton Facility, and has led several national projects in materials science. She has about 140 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Email: [email protected] Prof. Sven Lidin - Head of the Department of Chemistry, Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest: Intermetallic compounds are prone to various disorders. While this has mostly been considered a nuisance in the past it has lately been recognized that extensive disorder is conductive to several different kinds of interesting physical properties including enhanced thermoelectric performance. This talk will cover some basics about thermoelectricity and present some intermetallic systems where structural disorder is an important feature. The talk will also describe how to deal with such compounds from a structural perspective. Email: [email protected] Prof. Cintia Bertacchi Uvo - Department of Water Resources, Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest:Cintia Bertacchi Uvo is a full professor at the Department of Water Resources Engineering. She has a Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering from LTH (1998), a M.Sc. in Climatology from the National Space Research Institute, Brazil (1989) and a B.Sc. in meteorology from the University of São Paulo, Brazil (1983). Considering her broad background in meteorology, climatology and water resources engineering, her research focuses on the interactions of climate and surface hydrology in diverse time and space scales. Her expertise includes the development of data driven models for analysis and forecast of hydrological variables, based on climate conditions. Prof. Uvo has almost 30 years teaching experience in many countries. She has a large international experience that comprises long term stay and collaboration with scientific institutions in 13 countries worldwide. E-mail: [email protected] Prof. Erik Swietlicki - Assistant Dean for Research, Engineering Faculty, Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest: Swietlicki is Professor of Aerosol Physics at the Engineering Faculty (LTH) of Lund University. He also serves as Assistant Dean for Research at LTH. In this capacity, he is responsible for initiating and supporting research at the Faculty and at the wider University. Our university and Faculty includes several strong research environments and we are committed to pursuing both curiosity-driven and interdisciplinary research that will help us meet the global challenges and promote a sustainable development. His own research is motivated by the effects of atmospheric aerosols on climate, environment and human health. He has 30 years of experience in atmospheric aerosol science and has participated in numerous field experiments, including in Brazil and the Arctic. He is Deputy Coordinator of a Swedish strategic research area on climate modeling coordinated by Lund University which aims to develop the next generation of Earth system models. His research group has a strong track record in creating new cloud models and applying them to tackle problems related to severe weather, cloud glaciation, lightning and mechanisms for aerosol effects on cold clouds. Email: [email protected] Prof. Tommy Nylander - Physical Chemistry Department, Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest: Tommy Nylander is professor in Physical Chemistry in Lund University since 2007 and his research mainly concerns physical chemistry of biointerfaces, but has also worked on polymer-surfactant interactions at interfaces. He completed his PhD with Prof. Kåre Larsson at Lund University on proteins at interface 1987 and a post doc with Prof. Barry Ninham at Australian National University. The focus of his research is on molecules of biological origin, e.g. proteins and lipids, and the self-assembled structures they form in bulk and at interfaces. He has a large expertise on interfacial techniques such as ellipsometry, surface film balance, QCM-D and neutron reflectometry. Our techniques range from optics, electrophysiology and theoretical modeling, to microscopy, molecular biology and behavioral experiments. Email: [email protected] Prof. Gunnar Öhrwall - Research Max IV, Lund University Short Biography/Research Interest: Professor Gunnar received his Ph.D. in physics from Uppsala University in 1999, studying photoionization in small molecules. He did postdoctoral work on X-ray excited molecular fragmentation at the Advanced Light Source, in Berkeley, CA, between 1999 and 2001. He is since 2007 employed as a beamline scientist at the Swedish national synchrotron facility, MAX IV Laboratory, in Lund, specializing in X-ray spectroscopy studies of aqueous surfaces and interfaces, with relevance for environmental and energy applications. Email: [email protected] Lund University / Unesp Prof. José Alcides Gobbo Junior- Professor at the School of Engineering, Unesp and Guest Professor at the University of Lund Short Biography/Research Interest: professor Gobbo as received the title of Doctor in Business Administration (with emphasis on Operations Management) from Fundacao Getulio Vargas – FGV in 2004, and Postdoctoral fellow from Packaging Logistics, Department of Lund University, Sweden. He is currently Associate Professor at School of Engineering of Sao Paulo State University (UNESP), where he coordinated the Graduate Program in Industrial Engineering, and the MBA in Logistics. Gobbo was, also, Visiting Professor of Food Innovation and Product Design (FIPDes) - Erasmus Mundus Master, at the Packaging Logistics, Lund University in 2013. He acts as ad-hoc advisor to FAPESP, and journals in the area. His main research interests are in the fields of Packaging Logistics and Organizational Networks, and to integrate these themes into innovation and sustainability perspectives.
