RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT 2010-present Collaborator on the project PTDC/AAC-CLI/103110/2008, Portuguese Atlantic- and Mediterranean-type Rivers under the effects of climate changes: current and historical demography and comparative phylogeography of fishes as a tool for the conservation of critically endangered species, supported by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). The main goal of this 4 Curriculum vitae of José Maria Horta e Costa Silva Santos project is to characterize in detail the genetic structure of cyprinid populations of Atlantic and Mediterranean rivers with different hydrological conditions and climate (past and present) and possible effects of future climate change. 2009-present Collaborator on the project RICOVER - Rehabilitation of rivers in the Southwest European Space, supported by the ERDF. This project aims to define and implement (through pilot interventions) strategies and methods of joint protection and conservation of rivers of the Southwest European space, taking into account, among other things, natural resources and biodiversity, the conservation of priority habitats and heritage Natura 2000, the importance of rivers as ecological corridors, its contribution to the natural water cycle, the need for river richness and its economic value. 2004-present Collaborator in the project Evaluation of ecological status of Portuguese rivers (AQUARIPORT), supported by the National Forest and Wildlife Services (DGRF). The main goal of this study is to create and index of biotic integrity (IBI) at a national-scale level according to macroinvertebrate fauna, fish communities and also hydro morphology. 2007-2009 Collaborator in the project Improvement and spatial extension of the European Fish Index, supported by the European Commission. The main goal of this study is to extend the applicability of the existing EFI to all European ecoregions and river types in order to produce a harmonised assessment tool to support widespread implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Therefore, the overall goal of this project is to develop a new more accurate pan-European fish index in both geographical terms for Central-Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean ecoregions, as well as in scope, to include very large rivers, and to improve its ability to detect hydromorphological pressures. 5 Curriculum vitae of José Maria Horta e Costa Silva Santos 2006-2009 Collaborator in the scientific project POCTI/AGR/57175/2004, Migration ecology of Iberian freshwater fish and optimization of the efficacy of fish passes, supported by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). This project is a sequence of the previous study “Development and application of a fish passage for use on the weirs and dams of irrigation systems” and intends to continue the hydraulic experiments in an artificial pool-type fishway in order to better understand environmental and biological requirements of Iberian species. It will also support the building and monitoring of a nature-like bypass channel in a medium-sized river and its relations with species movements and behaviour. 2005-2008 Collaborator in the scientific project Impact of forest fires on ecological quality of Monchique stream, supported by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). The main goal of this study is to develop methodologies to assess impact of forest fires on ecological quality of streams in order to understand the dynamic of Mediterranean lotic ecosystems. Sampling program includes monitoring of different biological elements -diatoms, macroinvertebrate fauna, fish communities and macrophytes - on a seasonal basis in sites not affected and sites affected by different intensities of forest fires. 2004-2008 Collaborator in the project Valorisation and restoration of riverside forest in the vicinity of the Odelouca scheme, southwest Portugal, supported by the Portuguese Water Institute (INAG). This project performs studies in different research areas of river rehabilitation and restoration, including dissemination and survival of woody riparian species and their influence in instream habitat structure available for different aquatic communities (macroinvertebrates, fish and birds), assessment of the composition and spatial organisation of macroinvertebrate fauna, fish assemblages and birds in the Odelouca basin in 6 Curriculum vitae of José Maria Horta e Costa Silva Santos relation to environmental variables and disturbance, definition of habitat preferences for native endangered fish species, definition of adequate ecological flows and compensatory measures for stream reaches. 2004-2006 Collaborator in the project Water Framework Directive – Ecological status of surface waters in the Tejo e Oeste River basins, supported by the Portuguese Water Institute (INAG). The main goal of this study is to define reference conditions and a river typology for the fluvial systems of the Tejo and Oeste River basins and develop a methodology to evaluate and quantify ecological deviations, according to the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). The collection and data treatment of the biological element macrophytes at a national-scale level and with the same purposes is also a relevant task of this project. 2002-2005 Collaborator in the project Development and application of a fish passage for use on weirs and dams of irrigation systems, supported by the National Institute of Agriculture and Fisheries Research (INIAP). This project supported the building of an artificial real-scale pool-type fishway installed on the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC). The artificial fishway was subjected to a series of ecohydraulic trials in order to define the most suitable hydraulic conditions for successful upstream passage of non-salmonid Iberian species, namely potamodromous cyprinid fishes. 2001-2003 Collaborator on the project Ecohydraulic of fish passes at small hydropower plants, supported by the National Forest and Wildlife Services (DGRF). This study aimed to evaluate the performance of fish species on negotiating with fish passes installed at small hydropower plants and to estimate their efficacy. It included the use of three different monitoring techniques in distinct fluvial systems: automatic video recording on the Lima River (northern Portugal), 7 Curriculum vitae of José Maria Horta e Costa Silva Santos infrared beaming on the Zêzere River (Central Portugal) and radio-telemetry on the Mondego River (Central Portugal). 1998-2001 Collaborator on the project Efficacy of fish passes built at small hydropower plants and effects on fish assemblages, supported by the National Forest and Wildlife Services (DGRF). The main goal of this study was to catalogue and evaluate fish-pass effectiveness installed at different small hydropower plants and to analyse the impact of these facilities on fish assemblage composition and structure. 1998-2000 Collaborator on the project Establishment of an ecological flow regime on the Lima River, Northern Portugal, supported by the Nature Conservation Institute (ICN). The main goals of this study were to analyse fish assemblages under different types of flow regulation, to assess whether a minimum stable flow, which represented an attempt to achieve an adequate ecological flow has managed to maintain the existing assemblage structure effectively and to define an alternative flow regime and mitigation measures for a regulated river segment located between two hydroelectric dams. Parallelly, two different types of fish passes on the Lima River were continuously monitored to evaluate their efficacy: a fish lift and a nature-like bypass channel. 1997-2000 Collaborator in the project Development of an index of biotic integrity for river classification and management, supported by the National Institute of Agriculture and Fisheries Research (INIAP). This study aimed to develop an index of biotic integrity to evaluate ecological status of Portuguese rivers and define sustained management politics. Particular attention was given to the Tagus River basin. 8 Curriculum vitae of José Maria Horta e Costa Silva Santos 1995-1999 Collaborator in the project River classification and assessment of biotic integrity, supported by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). The main goal of this project was to develop tools to evaluate ecological quality of Portuguese rivers, particularly for macrophytes, macroinvertebrate fauna, fish assemblages and riparian vegetation. The study took place in the three most important river basins: Tagus, Douro and Guadiana. 3.2.
