Dear Colleagues: The Organising Committee of Jornadas de Actualização em Ventilação Artificial (JAVA) will hold its 11th edition, on October 28th and 29th 2013, in Ipanema Park Hotel – Oporto. Since our first edition of JAVA, we have been focussing discussions over the past decade on new and updated knowledge regarding ICU patients under mechanical ventilation for what concern Respiratory Care, Hemodynamic Monitoring, Infection, Sedation and Analgesia, and Palliative Care. We have also kept up to date about the latest news in Non‐Invasive Ventilation and tried to share this knowledge with a broad range of users, in the fields of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pulmonology. Since the beginning, we have tried to turn JAVA into a privileged place for discussion, with the presence of renowned portuguese and international experts, as well as with a nationwide audience interested in Intensive Care Medicine. This year we will discuss, in a special way, new aspects related to mechanical ventilation. We will also provide a place for discussion and debate, with interactive sessions, an ARDS clinical case, and lunchtime workshops with the help of industry on innovative aspects related to critical care patients.
