Vera Dubeux Torres, RIDESA, CECA, UFAL, Brazil RenovEnergia’14 , Renewable Energies and Energy Transition, Maceió, Alagoas, Brasil, 19 – 21 March 2014 RenovEnergia’14 , Renewable Energies and Energy Transition Objectives The foreseeable depletion of fossil fuels reserves and the necessary reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will lead to an increased share of renewable energies in the future global energy mix. Since 2000, renewable energies contribute most of the growth in the global clean energy effort. In recent years a significant increase in wind turbines and solar photovoltaic technologies implementation could be seen. Other renewable technologies, including: hydro, geothermal and biomass, were also growing, increasing the production capacity worldwide by hundreds of gigawatts. Biofuels for transport and renewable heat will also play an important role in the future. Brazil, for its part, aims at improving the energy efficiency of systems and at strengthening, in order to insure a greater energy security, a diversified renewable energy portfolio for transport and electricity. The plans include an increase of the share of electricity produced from wind power (overall potential of Brazil: 140 GW of which 30 usable) and sugar cane bagasse. They also include the connection of new hydroelectric facilities to the electric grid (hydropower currently accounts for nearly 90% of the electricity produced in Brazil) and to develop solar PV for rural electrification (Brazil has one of the world's highest solar irradiation : 6.5 kWh / day in the semi-arid Nordeste). The electricity produced by cogeneration, mainly from sugar cane bagasse, will be also widely developed for rural electricity supply. In the residential sector, Brazil promotes the use of solar water heaters and encourages the studies of energy production from wastes. The Brazilian plan on climate change will contribute an increased use of biofuels.. Brazil is among the countries in the industrialized world with the highest use of renewable energy sources. Over 45% of the energy are generated by water, wind, solar, biomass (ethanol) to be compared with less than 15% globally. The State of Alagoas, where this seminar is organized, has an energy mix with almost 80% of renewable energy. The objective of the seminar RenovEnergia'14 will be an assessment of the prospects of renewable energies towards a future energy mix. The seminar will present state of the art technologies together with innovations and the ongoing R&D. RenovEnergia'14 will provide an ideal opportunity for exchanges between local, national and international researchers, engineers and managers. The following topics will be covered: 1 – Future Needs / Resources: Energy transition 2 – Renewable energy resources: atlas of resources, the sun, wind, water, biomass… 3 – The techniques and the production plants: - Criteria for comparing power plants using renewable energies, - Photovoltaic solar energy, concentrated solar power (CSP), solar thermal... - Wind energy - Hydropower, - Energies from biomass - Other energy: marine energy, geothermal... - The tropicalization of equipment RenovEnergia’14 , Renewable Energies and Energy Transition, Maceió, Alagoas, Brasil, 19 – 21 March 2014 RenovEnergia’14 , Renewable Energies and Energy Transition 4 – Management of renewable energy: Complementarity of renewable resources, power plants, energy storage, associated smart grids... 5 – Future perspectives: which renewables in 2050 and beyond?
