Solubility pump 2. Physical pump 2 3. Biological pump 3 3 Nellemann et al. (2009) Motivation/Rational UFPE • • The temperate oceans (15o-50o) in the both hemispheres are the major sink zones for atmospheric CO2 . The equatorial Pacific and Atlantic (15oN-15oS) are important oceanic sources for atmospheric CO2 (i.e., Takahashi et al., 2009; 2014); Previous estimates of net production in the seasonal Amazon plume indicate that up to 1.7 Tmol C yr-1 is sequestered from the atmosphere, reversing the WTNA’s expected role as a net carbon source of CO2 (i.e., Yeung et al., 2012). 4 Nellemann et al.
