Light in Darkness continues the story of Red Light, a
legendary bandit from São Paulo, Brazil. The figure of
his son - the outlaw All or Nothing - is the thread that
runs through this political and existential narrative.
Worshipped by women, the cut-rate Don Juan commits
robbery in order to enjoy a wide variety of material
pleasures, following in his father's footsteps - “I had
the most beautiful women in the third world but I
never resorted to violence in order to steal jewels or
kisses”. Meanwhile, in his prison cell (while doing time
for robbery and forgotten by the system), the old Red
Light Bandit reflects on his own life while the nattilydressed, well-mannered All-or-Nothing sells his loot
in the port city of Santos, where he is a regular at the
“Enigma” nightclub. In investigative circles, everyone
is asking the same question: “Who is that man? Might
he be a mere copy of Red Light?” Rumors run wild, and
panic grips the third world megalopolis.

Helena Ignez is a legendary figure on the Brazilian cultural
scene. A major player in several avant-garde movements, she
has been called the MUSE OF CINEMA NOVO. Her creative
partnership with Rogerio Sganzerla began in 1968, and she

Rogério Sganzerla is one of Brazilian independent cinema’s foremost film
makers. His first feature [The Red Light Bandit (1968)] is celebrated as
one of the most revolutionary and innovative films of all time and has
been accorded world heritage status by UNESCO. In 1970, with director
Julio Bressane and Helena Ignez, Sganzerla co-founded the legendary
film production company Belair, which produced seven ground-breaking
motion pictures over a three-month period. Other Sganzerla films include
Abismu (1977) and his tetralogy on Orson Welles’ 1942 visit to Brazil,
which includes his last film [The Sign of Chaos]. Rogério Sganzerla died
in 2004. In 2003, he was awarded the Cultural Merit Medal by Brazilian
president Lula da Silva. In 2004 and 2005, the Torino Film Festival paid
tribute to Sganzerla with a complete retrospective of his work. His films
are currently being revived and accorded highly successful reception the
world over.
