Academic degrees: Graduate in Veterinary Medicine in 1976, Escola Superior de
Medicina Veterinária (presently Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária), Universidade
Técnica, Lisbon. Master of Sciences in Aquatic Veterinary Studies in 1981, University
of Stirling, United Kingdom. Doctor of Philosophy, in 1987, University of Stirling,
United Kingdom.
Licence to Practice: Portugal, licence nº 15.
Professional activities: the professional activity has been centred in teaching
"Anatomia Patológica"(Anatomic Pathology), since 1976, in the Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine, in Lisbon, as Assistant (1976-1987), Auxiliary Professor (1987-1990),
Associate Professor (1990-1996) and Full Professor (1996-present days).
Vice-Rector of the Technical University of Lisbon, from 1996 to 1999 and in 2011 to
the rpesent. Vice-President of the Foundation for Science and Technology, main public
Portuguese agency for research and technology funding, from February 2003 to
December 2004.
Responsible for the pathology diagnosis service of the Faculdade de Medicina
Veterinária, including necropsies, histopathological and citological diagnosis. These
responsabilities account for a total of appx. 2000 histopathological and 1000 cytological
analysis per year.
Main interests: Main interests are veterinary oncology, particularly skin and urinary
bladder tumours. Avian and fish pathology.
Languages: Apart from the mother tongue (Portuguese) excellent knowledge of English
and French, both reading, speaking and writting ability. Excellent knowledge of Spanish
reading and speaking ability. Good understanding of Italian. Reasonable knowledge of
“crioulo” (local language in Cape-Vert).
Scientific organizations: Member of the European College of Veterinary Pathology,
since 1996. Member of the following: "Sociedade Portuguesa de Patologia Animal”,
“European Society of Veterinary Dermatology”, since 1995, “European Society of
Veterinary Pathology”, since 2000. President of the Veterinários sem Fronteiras,
Portugal (NGO) from 2006-2010.
Honours: Pfizer Award of Veterinary Medicine in 1980, 1984, 1993.
Scientific projects of which is coordinator: POCTI (financed by the portuguese
Ministry of Science and Technology through the Foundation for Science and
Technology) - Ethiological and Pathological Studies of Enzootic Hematuria in the S.
Miguel Island, Azores, terminated in December, 2004.
Centre of Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
(financed by the plurianual programme of the Foundation for Science and Technology)
– Bovine Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma – morphological characterization, study of
keratin differentiation. Proliferation cell markers and DNA mutation markers,
terminated in 2003.
Areas of interest: Veterinary oncology in general, skin tumours in particular;
