Santo Antônio Energia will be a speaker at the event for the second time, and its representatives will participate in three different meetings: April 14 • Regional Session of the Americas, with the Water and Energy theme, addressing hydropower models with and without reservoirs and the effects of each with regard to energy production. Representatives of the United States and Mexico will also be participating in this panel. April 15 (two participations) • Presentation at the Brazilian Pavilion with the theme of Sustainable Power Generation in the Amazon, made by representatives from Brazil and other nations during a visit to the Brazilian stand. • Participation in discussions of the High-level Integrated Water Resources Management Panel, which will have representatives from Brazil, Myanmar and South Africa, as well as World Water Council representatives from other nations. Focused on the commitment to generation from a clean, renewable power source with the best concept of sustainability, the company’s manager for sustainability Guilherme Abbad will highlight the initiatives that led the project to reach the highest number of top marks in the Implementation category in an assessment made by IHA – the International Hydropower Association - a non-profit organization founded almost twenty years ago with UNESCO's support, which measures the sustainability of hydropower projects. The IHA already rated 12 hydropower projects in the world, and Santo Antônio Energia was the only one to receive the largest number of top marks. Top marks in 70% of the assessment In the assessment, the association evaluated 20 topics: Communication, Governance, Social and Environmental Issues, Integrated Project Management, Infrastructure Safety, Financial Viability, Project Benefits, Procurement and Contracting, Communities Affected by the Project and Way of Life, Resettlement, Indigenous Population, Manpower and Working Conditions, Cultural Heritage, Public Health, Biodiversity and Invasive Species, Erosion and Sedimentation, Water Quality, Residues, Noise and Air Quality, Reservoir Filling, Flow Regime and Downstream. These topics are based on different items: evaluation, management, communication with stakeholders, stakeholder support, accordance, compliance, and results. For this assessment, 375 documents were submitted, 283 interviews were conducted with Santo Antônio Energia professionals, the community - including resettled persons, prospectors and the indigenous population - government agencies, professionals from other companies etc. Hydroelectric opportunities in the Amazon The Santo Antônio Energia manager for sustainability will also present an overview of hydropower opportunities in Brazilian Amazon region, which is rich in every sense, especially in hydrological terms and which hydric potential, regardless of the type of use, is indisputable. The Amazon is the last frontier for the sustainable generation of hydropower, and currently only 25% of its potential are utilized for this purpose. Standing out in the region are Rondônia and the Madeira River, with an approximate total length of 3315 km and the 17th largest in the world in size, which represents one of the country’s greatest hydric potentials. This is where the Santo Antônio Hydropower, with a total investment of R$ 20 billion, is located. As of November 2016, the project will be operating at full load with 50 turbines, and its generating capacity will reach 3.568 thousand megawatts - enough power to meet the consumption of a population of 45 million. The Santo Antônio Hydropower, a member of the World Water Council - a global body responsible for the event and for the discussion related to water use in several industries -, is expected to also participate in the 8th World Water Forum, which will be held for the first time in Brazil, in Brasília in 2018.
