Historical
The department for Futsal of Sport Lisboa e Benfica was
established during the sport season of 2001/2002, having had disputed
immediately the 1st Division Championship due to the acquisition of the ExOlimpico sports rights. That year, Freixieiro won the National
Championships and Benfica´s Futsal team reached a prestigious second
place, creating the foundation for one of the strongest teams in the country
and in Europe.
The following season, 2002/2003, Benfica´s Futsal team won the
National Championships and well as Portugal’s Cup, brilliant feats that give
it even more exposure if you bear in mind that they didn’t loose one single
game throughout the whole season.
The following year, 2003/2004, Benfica´s team started off in a
most amazing way, winning immediately the National Super Cup and
guaranteeing there entry into UEFA´S Futsal Cup finals. During the
tournament, due to injuries and constant changes in the team led it to
loose the title, but nevertheless the 2nd place conquered showed the might
of a team that during the whole year was involved in two competitive
fronts.
In the finals of UEFA´S Cup, Benfica´s team won without
difficulties in a tough group that included the Italians Champions of Furpile
Prato, the Croats Champions of Hajduk Split and the Belgium European
Vice-Champions of Action 21 Charleroi. In the great final of the
competition, Benfica´s team gave an excellent performance to Boomerang
Interviú, loosing the game in Madrid and winning the one in Lisbon, only to
come out in the end loosing too two gaols difference in both hands.
In 2004/2005, Benfica´s Benfica´s Futsal team won the
National Championships and well as Portugal’s Cup.
