Welcome
Dear Colleagues,
We have a great pleasure to give you the welcome greetings from Curitiba, city that will
host you at the VII BRAZILIAN CONFERENCE ON RHEOLOGY from July 05 to 08, 2015.
The conference is supported by The Brazilian Society of Rheology (a member of The
International Committee of Rheology) and organized by the Federal University of
Technology – Paraná (UTFPR), the Rio de Janeiro Catholic University (PUC-Rio), the Rio
Grande do Sul Federal University (UFRGS), the Fluminense Federal University (UFF-Rio) and
the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)
The main goal of the conference is to bring together researchers and professionals with
common interest on Rheology and Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, in order to establish
a forum for fruitful exchange of information and ideas. The meeting will have technical
sessions and invited lectures. There will also be an exposition of rheometers and other
rheology related instruments.
Curitiba is referred to as the coldest capital of Brazil and a city to visit especially in winter,
when it becomes even more stunning, with several itineraries for those who want to enjoy
the cold season. July is usually the coldest month, with the average temperature ranging
between 9 and 20°C. So pick up your coats and come to enjoy the VII BCR with the cold
weather that only Curitiba can provide.
We are immensely satisfied with the indexes achieved and certain that will be a stunning
event and validate the effort of participation of all!
Best regards!
Prof. Cezar O. R. Negrão

Conference History
Aiming at gathering researchers, students and professionals working with non-Newtonian
fluids in Brazil, the I Brazilian Conference on Rheology took place in 2001 in Petrópolis, Rio
de Janeiro State, at the LNCC facilities. This workshop had an attendance of about 30
participants from different institutions, and two invited lecturers, namely R. Navarro
(UFPB) and Ken Walters (University of Wales, UK). During this workshop the Brazilian
Committee on Rheology and Non-Newtonian Fluids of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical
Sciences and Engineering was founded.
The II BCR occurred in July 2004, in Rio de Janeiro, and was co-organized by PUC-Rio, LNCC
and USP-São Carlos. It had an attendance of 150 participants, with 40 oral presentations.
There were 10 invited lecturers in this conference, namely: P.R. de Souza Mendes (PUCRio, Brazil), R.E.S. Bretas (UFSC-São Carlos, Brazil), M. Thomé (USP-São Carlos, Brazil), G. S.
Ribeiro (Cenpes/Petrobras, Brazil), G.G. Fuller (Stanford Univ., USA), J. Schieber (Illinois I.T.,
USA), M.C. Heuzey (E.P. Montréal, Ca), D. James (U. Toronto, Ca), T. Phillips (U. Wales, UK),
and C. Nouar (LEMTA, Nancy, Fr). It was sponsored by the Brazilian government fostering
agencies CNPq, Capes and FAPERJ, and also by a number of rheometer companies, who
exposed their products during the conference.
The III BCR happened 1n July 2006, in Rio de Janeiro, and was co-organized by PUC-Rio,
LNCC, USP-São Carlos and UFRJ. A short report about this conference can be found in
Applied Rheology, vol. 16, No. 6, pp. 342 (2007). The invited speakers this time were I.
Frigaard (U. British Columbia, Ca), P. Carreau (E.P. Montréal, Ca), A. Rao (U. Cornell, USA)
and M. Carvalho (PUC-Rio, Brazil). It was sponsored by the Brazilian government fostering
agencies CNPq, Capes and FAPERJ, and also by a number of rheometer companies, who
exposed their products during the conference.
In July 2008, the IV BCR happened in Rio de Janeiro, this time co-organized by UFF, LNCC
and UFRGS. D. Bonn (Université Paris VI, France), M. Denn (City University of New York,
USA) and G. Mompean (U.Lille, France) were the invited speakers. It was sponsored by the
Brazilian government fostering agencies CNPq, Capes and FAPERJ.
The V BCR was held in Rio de Janeiro, in July, 2010, again co-organized by PUC-Rio, UFF,
LNCC, and UFRGS. The invited speakers this time were G.G. Fuller (Stanford University),
João Maia (Case Western University), Fernando Pinho (Universidade do Porto), Matteo
Pasquali (Rice University), and H.H. Huilgol (Flinders Univ., Australia). At the end of the
event the Brazilian Society of Rheology (SBR) was officially launched, with the support of
the International Committee on Rheology (ICR). It was sponsored by the Brazilian
government fostering agencies CNPq, Capes and FAPERJ, and also by a number of
rheometer companies, who exposed their products during the conference.
The last edition of the event, the VI Brazilian Conference on Rheology, took place in July
2013, once again in Rio de Janeiro and was organized by PUC-RJ with collaboration of UFF,
3
Conference History
UFRGS and UFRJ. The meeting was marked by the presence of six invited speakers, one
from Brazil, Prof. Sebastian Canevarolo (Federal University of São Carlos, UFSCar), and the
others from abroad: Prof. Randy H. Ewoldt (University of Illinoys at Urbana-Champain,
USA), Prof. Norman J. Wagner (University of Delaware, USA), Prof. Gerry Fuller (Stanford
University, USA), Prof. Jan Vermant (Louven University, Belgium) and Prof. Jeffrey
Giacomin (University of Wisconsin, USA). This event was characterized by the presence of
about 70 participants from both the scientific community and the industry which
presented over 40 papers in the technical sessions. The event also featured a round table
with participation of representatives of Petrobras, Oxiteno, Brasken, Granolab and 3M,
that discussed the interaction between the industry and universities.
In this seventh Conference, there will be five invited speakers. This Conference covers
contributions to several topics, such as: rheology and industry (e.g., petroleum, food,
plastics, cosmetics, paints, mining), polymer solutions and melts, blends and composites,
emulsions, foams and interfacial rheology, suspensions and colloids, biomaterials and
biological fluids, viscoplasticity and thixotropy, advances in rheometry and in constitutive
equations and non-newtonian fluid mechanics.
The technical sessions will be performed in the auditorium for the oral presentations and
in an external area for the poster sessions. There will also be a showroom with an
exposition of rheology equipment from the most important companies of the area.
The organizing committee sincerely thanks the sponsors, the Brazilian funding agencies:
CAPES, CNPq, and the companies: Anton Paar, TA Instruments, Reoterm and Malvern, for
their support to the meeting and also express its gratitude to the technical assistance
people for their valuable help to the achievement of the event.
As in the last conference the election process of the Brazilian Society of Rheology will be
held during the event. Besides being an entity to aggregate the scientific community of
Rheology and Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, the Brazilian Society of Rheology intends
to increase the participation of the Brazilian community with the international one.
The organizers greatly acknowledge all the participants with a warm welcome, wishing a
very pleasant stay in Curitiba for this VII-Brazilian Conference on Rheology.
