Masters Degree in Science of Planning, School of Planning, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), USA.
Concentration areas: Regional development planning, Sustainable development and Environmental issues.
Thesis title: Regional Development and Interregional Cooperation: a case study of the European Atlantic

3. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
3.1. Interpreting and Translation
From 1984 to date, developed extensive Interpreting and Translation work (cf. list of published works below;
list of publications and of main conferences/events interpreted provided on request).
Interpreter for various national and international agencies in the following foreign countries: Angola, Bolivia,
Brazil, Ecuador, France, Guinea-Bissau, Italy, Ivory Coast, Spain, Sao Tome, Senegal, UK and USA.
Clients include: national organizations, official agencies, private companies, as well as international
organizations such as U.S. Agency for International Development; British Council, CPMR, EC, IMF, and
UNO.
Working languages: A-Portuguese; B-English; C-French, Italian, Spanish.
Number of days of interpreting: 2000+
Member of APIC (Associação Portuguesa de Intérpretes de Conferência) since 2005.
3.2. Public Administration
Public Official at the Comissão de Coordenação da Região Centro (CCRC) [Coordination Commission of the
Central Region of Portugal], Ministry of Planning and Land Management, Coimbra (1982-1997). Functions
performed since taking up post:
Translator and Officer for regional development issues at the Regional Technical Development Center
and Human Resources Management and Training Department.
Interpreter-Translator and Officer in the USAID MEREC (Managing Energy and Resource Efficient
Cities) Project, coordinated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and managed in Portugal by the
CCRC. Subsequently appointed MEREC Project Assistant Manager and International Assistant
Manager. General Coordinator of activities and Consultant on trips to various African and Latin
American countries sponsored by USAID (1983–1990).
In 1989 had leave of absence to pursue a Masters Degree course in Planning at the School of
Architecture and Planning, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (USA) Lived and worked in the USA
between 1989/91 and 1997–98.

In 1991 resumed service with the CCRC as Attaché to the President. Responsibilities included
protocol, external and media relations, and coordination of various inter-regional cooperation projects.
In charge of cooperation programs with Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany), Poitou-Charentes (France),
University of Tennessee (USA), Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR). Coordinated the
Environment Group of CPMR’s Atlantic Arc Commission.
On unpaid leave of absence since 1997 and working as a free-lance conference interpreter, translator
and consultant.
3.3. Teaching
April–July 2008 – Assistant Professor of the Post-Graduation Course in Translation, Faculty of Letters,
University of Coimbra.
February 2001–March 2008 – Assistant Professor at Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão (ESTG) of
Instituto Politécnico de Leiria. In charge of the following courses of the Licentiate Degree in Translation:
Introduction to Interpreting Techniques, Consecutive Interpreting I and II, and Simultaneous Interpreting.
Also taught English (4th year level) and Communication and Semiotics. Between February 2002 and
October 2003 was Head of the Language Sciences Department and member of the ESTG’s Scientific
Board until March 2004.
Since 1982 have taught Portuguese, English and Translation Courses (Cantanhede Secondary School; Colégio
S. Teotónio (Coimbra), private classes and tutoring). Organized and taught further education English
Course for the Journalists Club (Clube da Comunicação Social de Coimbra) (1987). Guest lecturer in the
Department of Romance Languages and the Graduate School of Planning, UTK (1989–91 and 1997–98).
Guest speaker on the European Course for Community Developers (Developpeurs Communautaires) and
for the UTK Summer Program Students on the Masters Degree in Planning, (1994–1999). Assisted the
Institute for Regional and Urban Studies (IERU) of the University of Coimbra to coordinate the
student/faculty exchange program with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
3.4. International experience
International work experience includes:
Participation in international and Inter-regional cooperation meetings as representative of the Central
Region of Portugal and chief-coordinator of cooperation programs.
Extensive travel in Africa, Europe, Latin America and the USA. Resident in the USA between 1989–91 and
1997–98.
Coordinator of "Portugal’s Central Region Week” at Expo 92, Seville, Spain.
Assistant at the Center for International Education. University of Tennessee: 1990–91.
Consultant for TVA’s International MEREC cooperation Project; liaison-person between TVA and UNO
and EEC (1988–1990).
Interpreter and Assistant Project Manager on USAID and TVA visits to Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Ivory
Coast and USA (1987–1989).
