Xerardo Pereiro, an anthropologist, is coordinator of the Thematic Research Line “Tourism & Development”. • Researchers, postdoctoral fellows, PhD students and collaborating researchers from other institutions work together on (inter)national projects promoted by the group. • All research projects are designed and developed in close collaboration with CETRAD’s Board of Directors and, where appropriate, with CETRAD’s other RGs and TRLs. 5 A new Research Group in CETRAD • For the period 2015-20, as a result of adjustments to CETRAD’s organizational matrix, a new research group (RG) has been created that will focus on issues relating to “Tourism, Identities & Cultural Heritage”. • It is constituted by 17 integrated members with PhDs (10 of whom from ISMAI, CETRAD’s only other formally participating institution, 5 from UTAD, and 2 from the Viana do Castelo Polytechnic), plus 5 collaborating postdoctoral researchers from overseas and national universities. The core of the RG is provided by researchers dedicated exclusively to the study Tourism & Cultural Heritage, many of whom have long experience of working collaboratively in one of ISMAI’s dedicated research groups. The RG has its own premises (provided by ISMAI) and excellent technological infrastructure. It also co-manages an indexed, peer review, international journal (PASOS – www.pasosonline.org), the quality and impact (2.8/5) of which has been internationally recognised. 6 Courses, multidisciplinarity & networks • • • • • The RG supports three undergraduate degree courses in Tourism – at ISMAI, at the IPVC (Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo) and at UTAD, one of which (the IPVC) has WTO (World Tourism Organization) certification 2005 -15. It also supports a Masters in Tourism, Heritage & Development (currently taught at ISMAI, and to be jointly offered in future), a Masters in Innovative Tourism Development (at the IPVC) and is currently drafting a proposal for a joint ISMAI-UTAD-IPVC doctoral programme in Tourism & Cultural Heritage. The RG’s commitment to the interdisciplinary study of Tourism & Cultural Heritage is total, and its research strategy is closely allied with CETRAD’s overall aims and priorities. It actively deploys skills from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, from sociology, anthropology, history and archeology to economics and management. The RG participates in networks related to the study of socially sustainable and responsible tourism, cultural tourism (RITA, ACMS, CINVESTAV, EUCALAND, ATLAS and its researchers are members of Special Interest Groups including Gastronomy and Tourism, Cultural Tourism, Events and Religious Tourism & Pilgrimage, Cittaslow, TRINET, IBERTUR, the Anthropology of Tourism Network, the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism, etc.). The Group also continues to develop active linkages between the academic and business worlds, so as to better appreciate and respond to the complexities of the multiple processes that drive tourism. 7 8 Central research issues • The RG places special emphasis on the roles of culture, nature, heritage and territory, as well as on how culture (through key social anthropological and socio-economic issues) interacts with commercial aspects of tourist travel and the heritage process and, in doing so, constructs and reconstructs identities and mercantilises hitherto unmarketed cultural commodities, assets and amenities. 9 10 Aims of the group a) From the standpoint of culture as a product, and taking cultural tourism and heritage tourism as being largely synonymous, a priority focus will be on how heritage tourism (in general, including both tangible and intangible aspects) and the planning and management of tourism based on heritage attractions (in particular) can be oriented more towards a creative tourism. b) Using a largely social anthropological perspective, the RG will also direct its attention to issues of cultural heritage and social memory, seen as a social construction and as a meta-cultural symbolic representation of identities. c) The RG will also analyse the mutual interpenetration of the tourism system, cultural policy and heritage management, i.e., the impact of cultural tourism consumption on the form and location of cultural attractions, cultural dynamics and stakeholder relations within the 11 tourism system as a whole. The “Tourism & Development” TRL • • • The Thematic Research Line (TRL) on Tourism & Development has an inter- and multi-disciplinary perspective aimed at stimulating interaction between the various disciplines that perceive tourism as an important field of study. The TRL’s proposed research emphasises: a) the effects of tourism on local societies and tourist destinations; and b) tourist uses of culture and cultural heritage, understood from a dynamic and processual perspective and taking into account UNWTO’s global code of ethics for tourism. The TRL’s overall challenge will be to generate and transfer results that help to build an alternative, sustainable and ethical tourism based on solidarity. Naturally, the TRL will integrate other analytical concerns into its work, such as the effects of tourism, new culture-nature tourism trends, tourism and new ruralities, border tourism, museums and tourism, tourism and identities, culture, food, crafts and souvenirs, the tourist experience, conflicts over ownership of cultural heritage tourism, tourism and the reinvention of cultural traditions, deruralization, tourism policies for competitiveness and sustainability, and responsible tourism. Furthermore, the TRL intends to develop and strengthen its work on new research methodologies in tourism, tourism education and management, tourism and the imaginary, and on tourism and visual culture. 12 Recent research projects Examples: 1.
