Course objectives
Português 207: Portuguese for Business course is designed to provide students with
grammar, vocabulary and cultural information regarding business practices in
Portuguese-speaking countries, with emphasis on – but not restricted to – Portugal.

students to post questions, topics for discussion or other issues that concern the
course. You may also post links or other ideas that you consider useful and
pertinent to the course.

Other relevant materials will be made available to students in 1014 Van Hise.

A selection of online articles will be assigned to you, depending on your choice of
final assignment and composition. The list of assigned readings and the dates that
they are assigned will be distributed on a separate sheet during the second week of
the semester.

Week by week
The course main topics are broken down as follows. The highlighted days in each week
refer to specific activities that will happen in that particular day. Besides being
responsible for the readings that accompany each topic, students will be responsible for
oral presentations on a regular basis; these presentations will be done both individually
and in groups.

Participation and attendance
Attendance is mandatory and will be kept daily. More than five (5) absences may result
in a lower grade. If anything prevents you from coming to class, please write an e-mail to
the instructor before class time. In a situation that requires extended absence you will
need to provide proper documentation.
Final Assignment
The final assignment will replace the final exam, scheduled for May 13. It is due that
same day at noon (12:00 pm), in Jared’s mail box, in 1011 Van Hise.
You will be required to write a final paper in Portuguese on a topic of your choosing, it
can consist of a paper, podcast, video, etc; though the topic must in some way involve
Portugal and its involvement in the European Union. Final projects should be 5-6 pages
in length, (double spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font).
The theme for your project must be chosen and approved by April 9th. A presentation
lasting 10 minutes, detailing the basic trajectory of your paper will be given during the
final week of classes.
